The issue with chocolate is the iron in it, same reason way I later found out that raisins are not good for both dogs and ferrets, though they were my guys favourite food and showed no ill effects from eating them. I've found in my experience, and in other owners, that all ferts have their own odd favourite food they go nuts for and it's almost never meat, something which mine were actively repulsed by. In my guys case it was raisin, but Joeys was pretty much any and all kinds of fruit and would wander between demanding apple, green grapes or bananas depending on his mood. Heck, even once Joey flung himself out of a grocery bag when food was being brought inside once once he realized it had some deli meat slices in it, then went and played in the one with the bananas. I'm surprised your guy walked that much. My typical routine was walking 10 or so feet until my guys would start to stray into someones yard, then turn around and dig their feet in when I wouldn't let them take us for a peek in their back yard. They'd get scooped up to repeat the process until we got to a park or back home for some digging. For a more serious video if you do it another time, I'd add the issues with North American ferrets, how inbred they are and the problems that produces. I don't know if you know it, but ferrets bred in Europe can live as long as cats. Someone on Facebook, Marie's Ferrets have lived as long as 16 years, which should be as shocking to you being a fert owner living in NA too used to having them around for like 6 years.
One thing with ferrets that's not often talked about, the joys of owning an elderly ferret. As hilarious and silly as they are when they are younger, when they become elderly, they become super chill and just want to hang out with you and become super affectionate.

I would argue that no animal needs bathing. You don't bathe cats or dogs regularly, therefore other animals are no exception. They self clean themselves.

The way you hold every part of him except his breathing airways underwater is truly beautiful. That technique was demonstrated in a video for Doula training regarding bathing newborns and it blew my mind.

don’t worry!! just use a puppy pad or a bigger litter box, you have to take a little bit of time to train them to use it but you should still get one!!!

Thanks for this video. I have lost 3 of my 5 ferrets due to age and illness this year. The remaining are quite old. It's good to see a ferret that's still youthful and energetic. It was also nice to see you use the same ferret cage we do, but we bought the extension to make it a 3 box/6 level mansion. It's looking quite lonely with only the two in there now.

Yeah I've unsubscribed because of his oblivious ignorance. If you want to learn about ferret care watch pazuandfriends, Emzotic, ferret-world, etc. They can't handle kibble, they eat only meat and are exclusive to eating only meat. Also bathing them strips them of their natural oils. The only thing he did right was the cage, however the cage still needs to be bigger.
So i got my ferret about 6 months ago. Farrah the ferret & my cat JulioKitty love to play & wrestle, so i ditched the cage & now Farrah has full run of the house along with JulioKitty. I put down a puppy pad next to JulioKitty's litter box & Farrah uses it MOST of the time. Ferrets are definitely awesome lil critters and i know i will get another when the time is right. For a second there I thought you had the worlds best ferret that never shits on the cage floor. Then I saw. We have three and I would say they use the litter trays 30% if the time tops. Also we feed ours on raw meat because one of your girls started getting fat and sick on kibbles. You have lithe best behaved ferret in the world. Our three go nuts when we bath them trying to leap out of the bath. We also have to placate ours with some oils on their bellies to get them to chill out so we can cut their nails. Nice video but I think you missed something. Ferrets will make a mess of your floor. Litter everywhere, meat hidden in corners. You will forever be sweeping/hoovering.
Aww! Wheatley is adorable in this! I would love to have a couple of ferrets, but they're not allowed in our township. My sister and I like to call them "weaselkitties" because they seem to be somewhere between the two creatures in temperament and physicality. When I lived in Japan my friends and I found a baby Itachi (a Japanese Weasel). They hand reared it and it became a pet. I took over looking after him when they left Japan. He was a terrible pet as most wild animals are. Still I loved him. From what I have been able to glean over the years he was pretty much the same as owning a ferret. Mustelids are awesome.

It’s also worth mentioning that having 2 can be less hassle than having one. They can play with each other when they’re out. I can be playing games with the ferrets out and they’ll play with each other.
I've been with my ferret since I was in the 5th grade (currently in 10th grade). I got him because my parents said no more rodents in the house. he was my little brother at only 3 months old and I've watched him basically learn to walk. keeping George is the most strenuous yet adorable thing I've ever done. Even at 7 years old he still misses the the litter box just to mess with me! 😤

Ferrets are so much damn work omlllll, I’ve had so many and damn do I need a break sometimes- but I adore them. I work in a small pet shop aswell and I always tell people consider getting a ferret more than you would a puppy. They are basically rowdy puppies that never grow up and will steal everything ;))

Jacob Ruest ferret are really smart and can actually pick up how you react to pain. If you overreact (like with kids), they can learn not to bite as hard. Be sure tell them not to do. Like most pets they know the word "No" if you use it enough. I Also give my pets time outs. For ferrets(and cats) I make them lie down on a chair with their head down. I snap as a reminder for behavior if at a distance(like a clicker). And im always sure to give them love after scolding or time outs are done. These are just some ways I've trained my ferrets without scruffing. If you're having a problem, I hope this can help.
Jacon Ruest we trained our ferret not to bite by making irritated ferret sounds, every time he bit too hard we would make the sound. Basically like ah ah ah. Ferrets use their mouth to play with other ferrets, they don't realise that humans can't be bit like they do a fellow ferret. Now he doesn't bite at all but he will playfully mouth our hands, only time he has bitten is when he got over excited while playing. That only happened once.

I made a video a while back where I calculated how much chocolate it would take to give a ferret what is considered a lethal dose (LD50) of theobromine, the ingredient in chocolate that makes it harmful to animals. It's over five ounces, which there's no way he'd ever eat in one sitting. He never gets more than a few licks. It was my "Discussing Disgust" video - I just double checked it and removed my previous comment.
Same said for dogs, but my grandparents had chocolates every Sunday their whole lives. Tiny lived until she was 20 and Singer lived until she was 18. A jack russell and a whippet. They both became part of our family the month I was born. I'm 43 now and still miss them.
I've also had the attitude that if something is bad for your pet, then why to give it to them in the first place..? I mean... Sugar ain't good for us humans and even less for our pets. Best to feed them only the things that they should, at least that is the easiest thing for me.
Because they don't. You need to change their bedding. Imagine wearing the same clothes all the time. Ferrets rub their oils on their bedding. Do they have their own unique smell? Yes. Quite honestly, if you smell a healthy ferret tail, it smells like grape jelly.
The way I describe it to others is that they don't smell any more than a dog. When i go over to someone's house and they have a cat, I can smell it immediately. When people come over to mine, they can't tell I have a ferret until they see it.
Dee Wee when I got my two male ferrets, they stunk to high Heaven! It was so strong! But after I had them neutered, they smell lovely. I think they smell like a puppy now. I love it!
Descented ferrets still have a musky smell. There are musk glands around their jaws that aren't removed during the descenting. They smell like a new boot when fairly clean & a sweaty gym sock when dirty... A dirty dog that came in from the sun smells worse than a dirty ferret.
Even though it deviates from your usual style, the fact that you did another video on ferrets makes me so happy! As a ferret owner, it's nice to say a solid informational guide. Im sure you've seen that there are a lot of ferret-rearing sticklers on the internet, so be prepared for anyone to criticize the way you raise your babe. I hope you avoid militant Facebook groups about ferret ownership if you don't want to get crucified, haha! Personally, I think you have one of the most chill ferrets I have ever met. Wheatley is gorgeous!
Great vid...I've owned ferrets since 1986. There will be a lot of people who will want ferrets after vids like this...just so long as they know that vet bills are freakishly expensive. Washing their bedding once a week is enough to get rid of most of the smell...and they work best with a buddy...and they bond incredibly strong with you.

I've been with my ferret since I was in the 5th grade (currently in 10th grade). I got him because my parents said no more rodents in the house. he was my little brother at only 3 months old and I've watched him basically learn to walk. keeping George is the most strenuous yet adorable thing I've ever done.
Even at 7 years old he still misses the the litter box just to mess with me! 😤

I believe that restriction was lifted a year ago and California now allows ferrets... if you want one, double check the CURRENT law.

Ferrets are so much damn work omlllll, I’ve had so many and damn do I need a break sometimes- but I adore them. I work in a small pet shop aswell and I always tell people consider getting a ferret more than you would a puppy. They are basically rowdy puppies that never grow up and will steal everything ;))

That was actually never really a problem with him, strangely. He's my second ferret so I fully expected it though.

Jacob Ruest ferret are really smart and can actually pick up how you react to pain. If you overreact (like with kids), they can learn not to bite as hard. Be sure tell them not to do. Like most pets they know the word "No" if you use it enough. I Also give my pets time outs. For ferrets(and cats) I make them lie down on a chair with their head down. I snap as a reminder for behavior if at a distance(like a clicker). And im always sure to give them love after scolding or time outs are done. These are just some ways I've trained my ferrets without scruffing. If you're having a problem, I hope this can help.

Jacon Ruest we trained our ferret not to bite by making irritated ferret sounds, every time he bit too hard we would make the sound. Basically like ah ah ah. Ferrets use their mouth to play with other ferrets, they don't realise that humans can't be bit like they do a fellow ferret. Now he doesn't bite at all but he will playfully mouth our hands, only time he has bitten is when he got over excited while playing. That only happened once.

I made a video a while back where I calculated how much chocolate it would take to give a ferret what is considered a lethal dose (LD50) of theobromine, the ingredient in chocolate that makes it harmful to animals. It's over five ounces, which there's no way he'd ever eat in one sitting. He never gets more than a few licks.

Same said for dogs, but my grandparents had chocolates every Sunday their whole lives. Tiny lived until she was 20 and Singer lived until she was 18. A jack russell and a whippet. They both became part of our family the month I was born. I'm 43 now and still miss them.

I've also had the attitude that if something is bad for your pet, then why to give it to them in the first place..? I mean... Sugar ain't good for us humans and even less for our pets. Best to feed them only the things that they should, at least that is the easiest thing for me.

Because they don't. You need to change their bedding. Imagine wearing the same clothes all the time. Ferrets rub their oils on their bedding. Do they have their own unique smell? Yes. Quite honestly, if you smell a healthy ferret tail, it smells like grape jelly.
The way I describe it to others is that they don't smell any more than a dog.
When i go over to someone's house and they have a cat, I can smell it immediately. When people come over to mine, they can't tell I have a ferret until they see it.
Dee Wee when I got my two male ferrets, they stunk to high Heaven! It was so strong! But after I had them neutered, they smell lovely. I think they smell like a puppy now. I love it!
Descented ferrets still have a musky smell. There are musk glands around their jaws that aren't removed during the descenting. They smell like a new boot when fairly clean & a sweaty gym sock when dirty... A dirty dog that came in from the sun smells worse than a dirty ferret.

This is the educational information I've been needing in my life.
Great vid...I've owned ferrets since 1986. There will be a lot of people who will want ferrets after vids like this...just so long as they know that vet bills are freakishly expensive. Washing their bedding once a week is enough to get rid of most of the smell...and they work best with a buddy...and they bond incredibly strong with you.
