    Whats the most annoying design you've seen? I personally can't stand fruit wrapped in plastic when it has its own natural coating.

    One very annoying yet very common design flaw:
    Restroom stall doors that swing in to open force us to back up and straddle the toilet to open the door.
    Swing out, please. Swing out.

    • @Chillazilla2
      @Chillazilla2 Před 3 lety +75

      They swing in so as to not hit anyone passing. Instead, they should make the stalls a bit longer.

    • @tejeda7324
      @tejeda7324 Před 3 lety +33

      They swing in for protection if you are in a stall and somebody’s trying to attack you in it they have to open the door towards you so you can block the entrance if the door would swing out then you will be completely vulnerable and you cannot defend yourself

      Tejeda or you can put a lock on it and buy a gun. I’d break that stall down in 3 tackles.

    • @Leo-nine
      @Leo-nine Před 3 lety +26

      Shadowed Kiss I've been in plenty of public restrooms that have doors that swing out. Never once have I been hit or has anyone else been hit in my presence. One can clearly hear the latch being undone and can easily avoid a collision with the opening door.
      Swing in doors are purely poor design and thoughtlessness.

    When I lived in Tucson many years ago, they built a new library. At the same time our airwaves were being inundated with ads, "Buy Tucson first!", city fathers decided to fly some dipwit in from *Chicago* for a week, so she could get a feel for the "essence" of the place.
    First mistake, the library was dominated by a huge atrium that yes, brought in lots of wonderful desert light. But it also severely reduced the floor space, leaving hardly any room for, y'know, *books*.
    They had plenty of benches circling the outside, but no shade. Tucson+no shade=Very Bad News. They did plant some bitsy saplings, so maybe in a couple of years someone could sit there without scorching their posterior. Maybe.
    But the kicker was the massive sculpture out front. A solid metal gazebo (pillars topped with an abstract represention of thunderstorms), painted a delightful fire-engine red that helpfully lets you know "you are in hell now". The waves of radiant heat pouring off of it brings an extra bit of "essence of Tucson" to its surroundings. It even has a li'l bench--why?? You can't get within 10 feet of the monstrosity (except, maybe, in winter)--only someone bent on self-immolation would think of actually sitting there!

      I'm originally from Tucson--about when was this? I was born there, but left in 1989 for Illinois (where I frequent the Chicago area LOL). I remember going to a library with my mom quite often, but I don't remember a new library--this may have been after my time.

    • @jennhoff03
      @jennhoff03 Před 3 lety +2

      So... did the person they flew out build the library? Or was that a separate anecdote? Either way, that library sounds truly terrible! Especially the metal gazebo!

    • @teresamcmurrin8672
      @teresamcmurrin8672 Před 3 lety +3

      @@DarthTaiter79 It was built in 1990. The dipwit designed the building. The old Main Library, with its beautiful design, became library offices. Granted, it was pretty old, crowded, and musty. (It was designed by a Mason, its layout was quite symbolic!)
      The same people putting out the ads "Buy Tucson First" (at public expense) were the same ones that constantly brought in outsiders (at public expense) to do anything for the city. If you want "the essence of Tucson", you'd think you'd ask an actual, y'know, Tucsonan, right?
      I'm not sure which pissed me off more: the Dante-inspired sculpture (I'd guess the 8th level), or the ginormous atrium that tunnelled up all 4 floors, leaving just enough space around the perimeter for short bookshelves (didn't help my acrophobia one bit, either!).
      The only good thing about that sculpture is that it made the row of giant tweezers at the U of A look good. (At least they used cool colors!)
      Speaking of the U of A (the reason I moved to AZ, go, Wildcats!), around that time, it had a new president. There was a lot to say (none of it good) about him, he spent money like water on useless BS status-symbol projects ("a gateway to 6th Avenue"). To fund all this, they now started charging for formerly-free services, like legal aid and the health center. Every couple of years, they'd design a new logo. In previous years, they'd have a competition among the art students, it was a win-win. The winner would get a small cash award, & something to put in their portfolio. The college saved a whole lotta money. But that wasn't high-status enough, oh, no. Once again, they turned to Chicago(!), and had it professionally designed. Since the logo consisted of the letters "UA", there wasn't a whole lot you could do with it. Oh, look, they added a blue stripe (or maybe it was red), how exciting! Well worth the big bucks, fer shure. Which student services are they gonna cut to fund that?
      "Buy Tucson First", my ass.

They would have to completely redesign the plane as the cabin itself is generally around 6ft 4inches, at it's tallest, but that's just the middle isle pedestrian area and not the height of where the seats are located. That could drop a foot or more. Plus during a crash your head would be too close to the ceiling creating a hazard and wouldn't be approved for use.

      @[Cyberiad] Phoenix, that reminds me of the first Video Cassette Recorders that were coming out in the late 1970's early 1980's not having an instruction manual to learn how to connect the device and learn how to operate it instead it included a Video Cassette Tape you had to play in order to learn how to connect and use the VCR.
      No lie, my cousin bought one a Zenith top loader vcr with the fake vinyl woodgrain over the metal housing for $695 and couldn't figure out how to connect and operate it and told me if I could figure it out I could have it. He had the issue of picture but no sound when he winged it setting it up by simply connecting the antenna out to the tv but didn't realize it required hooking it up to a stereo transceiver to get sound.
      I called up Zenith Corporation and talked to a beautiful sounding but dumb woman on the phone asking her how to connect and operate the vcr and she inquired if I watched the video cassette which clearly demonstrates how to do that.
      I politely said to her: " Think about what you just said, you asked me if I played a video cassette instruction on the vcr I need instructions to set up and operate to watch the video which you included in the box to instruct me on setting up and operating the device. Do you see a possible problem in that idea by Zenith "?
      There was a pause for a few minutes and I thought that she hung up on me and when I said hello still there she replied that it just dawned on her that I can't watch a video to learn how to watch a video and would pass along the conversation with the manager of the company.
