- In this CZcams video, Jeff McCosker discusses the different widths of Onewheel hubs and how they affect the ride. He explains that narrower hubs can make the tire more nimble and playful, but sacrifices stability. On the other hand, wider hubs offer more stability but can limit maneuverability. McCosker shares his experiences testing different hub widths and recommends a 155mm width as the best compromise between stability and nimbleness. He also mentions the possibility of using spacers to customize the hub width further.
Highlights
🎥 Jeff McCosker discusses the width of Onewheel hubs and their impact on the ride.
🏄 Narrower hubs make the tire more nimble and playful, but less stable.
🚀 Wider hubs offer more stability but limit maneuverability.
👍 155mm hub width is recommended as a balance between stability and nimbleness.
🛠️ Spacers can be used to customize the hub width further.

Oh yeah I rode the Burris 5.5, it's a fun tire but I always had to be on an edge
😆😂🤣 had a feeling you were gonna say that.
Aaaannnnddddd... pinned
😂 did not disappoint
@thefloatlife nailed it 😂😂
😂😂
Thanks Jeff, with all these new mods coming out for the onewheel from so many different companies, it can be very difficult to know what to upgrade and not end up broke in the process. Love the informational vids and appreciate TFL not just tryna shove products down our throats. Keep it up Gents 🙌🏼
I second this. This was incredibly informative (and not just a salesperson trying to sell us something). Awesome video!
Would love to see more of these explainers and "behind the design" videos 🤙
tfl is probably the best marketer and non based company. they show every and are really honest abt them. either their own product or another company’s. this is why i love them
What a great time to be alive~!~So much fun coming our way...truly thankful for all the work you guys are doing, and for videos like this that let us know what you are thinking. What I'd like as a builder, and I know you touched on this in a video about the S, is more specs on the interior of the hub. Da magnets baby, since that's where the flux happens. As always ride on my friends. . .
Can you explain the magnet choices?
Love this kind of conversation around what your are experimenting it would be awesome to have briefing about the magnets 👌👌
I run a local Stoke Shop and use this same concept as a selling point for Float Life Savers. Not just wheel protection but gives your tire a little more shoulder/crown to ride on too for better carving.
I noticed this especially when trying to fit a Maxxis 6.5 tire on my GT. I fixed the rubbing then later on installed Float Life Savers. That’s when the rubbing returned due to the extra overall diameter the tire gained.
Imagine Float Life Savers that came with different size (width) inside lips. You could choose how much narrower you want it to be from bead to bead depending on what kind of ride you’re going for.
Thanks for the breakdown and it's great to see the iterations that you're going throught to get to the mass product
Great vid. U guys are at the forefront of our passion🤟🏻
Ill cop the MTE over the techrail version
same
Man I want these hubs on all the wheels in Shredville. So sick, thanks Jeff. 🤌🏼👍🏼
Love a nice Jeff explains video.
Thanks for the info Jeff. It would be great to see a lot of this hub size / tire size info in that new blog section on your site.
I'm so excited to ride without life savers nor fearing damaging my rim. I pop off my savers pretty frequently doing fun stuff and this seems like the perfect fix
Rad. Love this type of video
Thanks for the details on the journey. Love the transparency.
So, the next drop of MTEs will be the 155? Asking for a Santa😂
7:30 "Good for super high speed trail stuff"
Well I’ll tell you Stew, I did battle some humungous berms. But like I told the guy on ABC, danger is my business.
I would love to buy one! but what about compatibility? I have a Pint, was also looking to get a pint X and get the current generation MTE, But on your site , it says it was only compatible with XRs/GTs. Asked around, no one really knew if they were pint/pint x compatible. Are the production runs going to be compatible with Onewheels whole line-up or just GT/XR?
new tire sits on top of the display cabinet tho :D
Honestly at this point why isn't there a TFL controller? I'm just saying....
Who says there isn't? 🤷♀️
@@TheFloatLife say what?!
I'll believe it when I see it on the store!@@TheFloatLife
@@TheFloatLife I volunteer as tester! 🙋♂️
👍👍 informative video
More floatwheel adv videos please!
Are there any future plans for other color options than funmetal?
I hope the 555 street pro 2 fits growler rails. That setup would be nuts
Any rule of thumb difference for tire pressure? I weigh 180 and riding at 15 psi on the 555 was amazing. On stock hub with enduro my go-to was 15-16 psi.
So did you guys end up with the 155 mm? Also any change or difference from the first batch of mte hubs and the new black curved ones?
When are they going to be in stock again?
I always thought go smaller hub bigger tyre profile for more cushioning ride and grip on hills etc
I heard gurth is more important than length.
So, do you think there is any benefit to a 6" hub over a 5" for a trick/street board?
Damn didn't know it was so complicated between diameter, size, tire etc. Also totally called Jef Adair out but I don't know shit about the different tires(Ive only ridden an enduro and street pro). So I guess ill have to wait a while to find the perfect hub/tire set up for what I need
What magnet strength do you recommend for a GT with GTS motor? 48 or 52?
Thanks for the deep dive on the hubs. Learned a lot. So in a perfect world where there's plenty of tires available for each hub size, which hub size (5" or 6") provides the best mix of stability and nimbleness and suitability for street and trail, in your opinion? Also, is TFL planning to a make a new 6" hub for the GT?
Oh dude, 5" is the way to go. If 6" was better we would make a 6" since it's waaayyyy easier to make a 6".
Do you know the width of the adv hub for comparison sake?
I just got my first Onewheel (xr). Once I wear out the Vega I’ll be looking at the max is 6.5. How long do tires typically last? Mine has 45 miles on it.
If properly inflated, the VEGA can last 2000 miles or more.
Wait wait wait wait wait. So your saying, the tire, effects the ride of the board? And it’s not necessarily the hub, but also the tire change when you switch hubs? Diameter of the tire can effect torque feel? Pffffft. You just blew the minds of like 90% of people that switched hubs😂🤣.
🤯🤯🤯
I haven't ridden anything other than the GT, so I have nothing to compare this to. Can you please break down why someone would go this route?@@TheFloatLife
What is the stock width of a pint hub?
Is there a version for the ADV?
@thefloatlife what’s the weight difference from stock to mte?
When is the new tire getting announced 👀
Can anyone explains what the diffrence between torque and speed is with hubs?
Do the 5" MTE hubs increase motor temperatures, all other things equal? If so, by about how much? Do we need to plan for cold ones (5" hub version), or maybe power blocks? I asked a similar question on another 5" MTE clip, hoping you guys will respond here - full transparency on this please.
Not that I've seen
@@TheFloatLife Not a definitive answer, but it is something. I'm sure other customers are wondering about this. It would be helpful if you did some testing and could report the results in another clip or maybe on your website so people know what to expect with this hub. The concern is due to a lot less metal surface area compared with the stock hub which already has some overheating issues, but perhaps there are other offsetting factors such as surface coating etc. More clarity may alleviate concerns. Thanks.
@@Alex-ge6fo It's hard to do a controlled test, but I wouldn't expect any significant thermal differences, at least when comparing same magnet strength. I did see potential slight benefits when doing two similar trail rides between stock XR hub and my N52 MTE hub (VESC), but I'd consider it within the margin of error, so huge grain of salt. I've seen no evidence of worse temps though, in my testing at least.
Can you make spacers to allow us to choose the width?
Yes. However, there's only so far you can go on spacers before you can start to cause issues
Hi! Are you able to help? My MTE 5” hub is slowly leaking air. I have the tx-11 5.5-5 Burris “trail pro” on it. I would ride it at 15.5 psi.
Yeah, that sounds pretty common for a Burris tire. They're sort of notorious for leaking air
If you could only pick one upgrade between 5” hub or a set of WTF’s from stock rails what would you choose and why?
Jeff, you (someone for Floatlife) said in a Reddit post that you are coming out with a "full size" enduro for the 5" hub. What does that mean 11x6x5?
Yes, that's the 655 and I'm testing it on my board right now
I'd also really love to hear some comments regarding Techrails choice to go with 5.8 and what you think about it
5.8 in is 147mm so I think that's what he was hinting at when he said you could go a mm or two smaller.
@@andrewstarry6369 much appreciated. My American brain doesn't process these things lol
What’s the status on that bad boy in the top right corner?
Soon™️
Do you rock lifesavers on your 155? ....or is there another lifesaver solution coming for this 155 that doesn't need snapping on over the rim?.
...also just to check, will the lifesavers on the 165 bring the inner width back in to 155, or a bit over?
Maybe they have plans, but for now, no lifesavers exist for 5" hub. The smaller hub means you're going to be hitting your rim MUCH less (if ever), and when you do, not only will much of the impact force usually be absorbed by the time it reaches your hub, but the hub itself should also be significantly more durable than a stock hub. So it generally shouldn't really be necessary to run life savers, at least I'd imagine so
@@nicoaleman Totally agree, more tire/air cushion + smaller diameter rims are stronger. Also look how thick the lips are on those things which makes it even stronger. I think it is extremely unlikely unless you are running super low tire pressure with big drops on sharp edges, and if you are able to impact your 5" rim enough to damage it, you are probably getting bounced off the board.
TFL > Techrails
So essentially you made pint hubs?
This video reminds me of high school in the gym locker room, with a guy who talks too much about his experiments. Bring a towel folks.
Hi TfL team. Don't know if you'll read but I have a question.
During the summer some of my friends had motor overheating issues with an XR conversion to vesc. Will this issue be worse with a smaller hub ?
Or maybe you plan on releasing cold ones for XR 🙃
i need a 6 inch ngl 👀
Wow really
Ooofff who sniped the 69th like? Lol
Is 4" MTE? Asking for a friend
my 555 sitting empty in the corner
And this is why I'd never buy TechRails half-finished crap anymore. TFL actually does their research on themselves, not the customers.

...Pioneer.... hmmm
Can anyone explain in short what the diffrence between torque and speed with hubs?
