- Kirk Hammett shared some pretty cool stuff with us in the Guitar Center San Francisco store. History, influences, and even a timeless riff he wrote when he was 16 that is still just as evil and epic to this day.

He is so humble
Accurate
Kirk and Rob are so different than Lars and James. The first two are always smiling and just want to have fun where the last two are generally assholes to the nth degree. Idk how Kirk and Rob can put up with them.
Kirk is just a little kid living his dream, and I'm all here for it. Dude is a treasure
He really is!❤
he's almost 60 now
Kirk has always seemed like a very genuine and down to earth kind of guy from the very start and didn’t let Metallica’s massive success go to his head. His laid back and sweet nature is a breath of fresh air amongst so many others who let fame corrupt their core self.
Nervous and shakey while talking... , confident and fluent when playing 🎸
Different strokes for different folks!
I think the drugs just fucked him up

You definitely get the sense that Kirk Hammett is one of the genuinely nicest guys ever in metal.
No ego what so ever. Love it.
I met Kirk in 97 w my mom and 2 brothers when we were children (7, 9, and 11 yrs old). He was very kind and generous. He signed all my brother's CD covers and gave my other brother a guitar pick.
i know...
Sweet
Wow ! Pretty impressive 🤣
Did he give your mom anything?
They say never meet your heroes! However I was invited back stage by Paul D (the original Iron Maiden singer) he signed all my albums as well and was a wonderful person.
Kirk is so nervously spoken, its adorable.
@Dog Is Not Amused you really believe in that things?
because james and the rest of the band beat him down, you can see it in their backstage/ rehersal videos.
Jesus is Dog : der now all that’s amazing but it’s bullshit
Jesus is Dog : omfg. There’s stars formed trillions of kilometers, billions of light years apart from eachother, and we’re out here putting so much sense into them. It’s interesting for how it shows human behavior but to me annoying as fuck if people are judged to that level just from when they were born. Nothing to do with the video I know this just mildly triggered me
He speaks through his guitar! that's all I want to hear and he is a fucking legend!
he was 16 when he composed that "Creeping Death" riff, fucking amazing...
Sounds about right
wow you probably don't play guitar which is why you think that's amazing. if metal was a language that riff is as basic like saying hey I am evil .
+Umer Soomro wow, you probably know so much about music than Kirk, but how come I've never heard about you, when you're such famous musician? btw the entire "Creeping Death" song is saying "hey, I am evil" and it's fucking amazing, maybe you can beat it with your famous riffs, can't wait to hear them at YOUR 100 000 people concert, don't worry I'll be there :D:D:D
+itkojecockot flip a coin buddy. this video is speaking beyond the success of Kirk. rather its speaking of the vastness of life. it's showing that portrayed hero's demise. this video saddens me more than anything.

People bash Kirk because he's not as good as other guys like Marty Friedman or Petrucci yet he's in Metallica and super famous.
He's still wrote the most memorable solos ever
Exactly, Bro... the Memories of the Solos is Deep Within Us and Lars and James found a dedicated Soul to easily control,,, but, It's been a very successful trade-off over the years... James is way too Great of a Rhythm/Lead for a sassy Dave Mustaine/Marty Friedman Type. MegaDeth is just Awesomenss!! but, Dave could Never have found Fulfillment in Metallica. Also that tone is fucking horrendous, I cant even imagine him and his sound engineer listening to that piece of tinny garbage and thinking "alright, thatll do". Mesas in the background, and yet such a thin, wispy tone. James did a video like this in practically the same conditions when it comes to the equipment and his tone sounded almighty, just like the mesa should sound if adjusted correctly. Well, I absolutely hate Kirk's playing. Its uninspired, generic, awfully unclean, technically and melodically inferior to basically all metal lead players including Mustaine (who's never been that good anyways), and he's got one of the absolute worst vibrato and bending techniques Ive ever seen. Maybe he was something back in the day, though still his playing in the 80s and 90s isnt my jam at all. I'm glad you said "James especially" because I think he changed the most but he probably needed to
+s Humphrey like in a good way or bad way
+3 Dollars and 50 Cents no kirk went through a cocaine fase and it change him completely but he quit and went back to his normal self
Eddie Garcia Personally a good way but as for thrash metal, ehhh?
So genuine. Amazing hearing that its not the money that he needs the most in life, but to pick up the guitar and go to a place that makes him happy. Special bloke!
The lick at the beginning (My Apocalypse) is one if my fav metallica riffs
If anyone is wondering the first riff is from the song My Apocalypse
Thank you so much I was searching for that song and I couldn’t find it, I guess I don’t listen to much death magnetic
Thank you so much! 😊
It is !!
Thank u so much !
One of the best riffs ive heard
To everyone says Kirk sucks;
Lets see you still shred Puppets solo perfectly.. Or Seek and Destroy solo as fast.. Or anything from the track Fight Fire With Fire at the age that he is now?
Bet you'll have a pretty hard fucking time at it, too.
The dude's old, yeah.
However, who wrote those solo's on Puppets and Ride the lightning and Kill em' all to begin with? Kirk.
So, sure.. Sit back in your little comfy chair and bash at this legend.
At least he's known to be one of the heavy metal icons in the biggest metal band that ever lived.
Sit back.. And despair.
ofc logicaly u get better after years but ok....sure gimme wah and baby can play it plus fast playing dosent mean better :)
Kick Bam I'm 100% sure that a baby could'nt even figure out how to use a wah in the first place, and the baby could probably spell a lot better than you
Sudhish Raghupatruni someone dosent know what is metaphore or internet grammar
I know just trying to be realistic
And most people use spell check
His tone is so crisp and awesome
In listening to him, you get the sense that the success and accolades are almost an afterthought. I always appreciate further insight into what it takes to excel at one's craft. The Rush reference doesn't hurt, either. Well done.
Kirk always had the coolest looking guitars. Nice guy, too.
Agreed, I would get one 100% if I had the money
I've always liked the kh3
Coolest AND simplest imo.
I love his les paul
The Hammett face ..like he's looking for your approval of what he's playing lol
+Josh Martins Haha yeah I know! But I've always liked him for that, kind of an insecure dude compared to James, even when they talk you can tell. He still rips it though.
+Aaron Ryan yeah, when hes on stage he looks like hes imitating the moves of the big stars... But he IS one of the big stars...
+GFG Nickname_not_chosen INsecure? Or just humble? :)
+SubCulture MEDIA Excellent correction! Humble yes.
+SubCulture MEDIA I think both.... from his nature he is a really humble guy and honest as well. But I think the years with lars and james with their Uberegos made him question for anything he plays. imagine showing Lars a riff and he is just the arsehole he always used to be (which is one of the reasons why metallica is where theband is) or james with his insane downpicking and tough well timed riffs.... I would be insecure all the time
such a softly spoken man and an absolute legend
I have a soft spot in my heart for that riff
It always seems like he's about to cry
you just don't know how bad things really are
Hahahaha!
hes just nervous. i have it too
That's how metal he is
P
I don't get some people on youtube sometimes. No matter what Metallica video you go on, the comments are always filled by people nit picking how he plays guitar. He doesn't claim to be the "greatest" guitar player of all time or anything. He just plays guitar in a band because he enjoys it, and it pays the bills. For me there is no need to bag on the guy constantly. Just my 2 cents.
You think these people have much more going for their lives besides arguments that go nowhere and will never solve anything?
GenderPranks As a small personal motto 'Don't like how that person plays guitar? Then stop bitching and learn to play better than them'
Majority of time, the people who are nit picking on how others play, speak, dress, or drive, are very insecure and immature. I agree with you I've noticed that too - people like that spend more time criticizing instead of picking up a guitar, or at least enjoy the video. I suggest that you ignore them, because if you continue reading their comments it will drive you nuts. It's my experience.
when you get 'big', you get haters, simple as that. I know there's probably a lot of people out there that hate on Kirk because they can play faster and/or cleaner than him and therefore they deserve as much success as him. I love Metallica to the death, but they are very fortunate or "lucky", if you prefer. I mean, if it wasn't any one of them, it would've been some other group of talented musicians (there are many of them out there, after all).
I think he accepts that. He's said many times that he was just in the right places at the right times. That goes for any art though.
I don’t know a lot about Metallica, other than songs played on rock radio.
Even so, I have a whole new appreciation and respect for Kirk after seeing this interview.
His humble nature is inspiring. His fame and fortune would probably be enough to fuel an ego a mile high, yet he doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy.
Kudos to Kirk!
Im a few years younger than Kirk, I grew up in mid teens finding Metal music and Metallica after all the years of bands Ive listened to I still come back to them as my favorite metal band as they and Judas Priest just struck me as the most unique sound and had particular richness to their sound that no one else had.
I like some Maiden songs I'd rank up there as my faves also, and Sabbath, DIO, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd but they are like basics of that genre that everyone is going to like.
0:07 is "my apocalypse" btw if anyone was wondering.
THANK YOU, THAT RIFF IS KILLER
thanks!
/ /\/ _/ /\/\/ thanks man been looking for months
Thank you😂
Everyone talking about his playing and im trying to find this sentence. Thanks so much bro lmao.
what a kick ass riff to start the vid off!!
My Apocalypse from Death Magnetic
TRIVIUT Thank you! It was driving me crazy, I gotta learn that one
Evan Hunt what is it?
Can u tell me what song it’s from
I love it that he's so talented and so humble
Kirk is one of my major influences when I was starting to learn the guitar in the 90's. Some people might downplay his guitar skills in terms of his "technicality", but he and his band has been a tremendous success (his networth proves it) and thats what really counts. Technical skills are good, but are not essential to be successful in the music industry. Like it or not, its all about sales. And these sales translates into awards and recognitions (Grammy's, Billboards, etc.)
