When you say "shout out to the bass player" to Les Claypool, its like hearing someone say "shout out to the guy that just hit that layup" when watching Michael Jordan. He's the Bass GOAT
Definitely in the running for GOAT status... but Billy Sheehan, Jaco, Flea, JP Jones, Geddy Lee are right there too. Probably a few more I havent listed too.
Either way, Primus is Les Claypools pet project. hes the guy. Larry has been in the band for the vast majority of the time too and doesnt get nearly enough credit. Larry Lalonde is a phenomenal guitarist.
@@JungleScene I was actually having that conversation with my friend not long ago. Its easy to fixate on the greatness of Les, but the guitar (while used uniquely) amd drums are always on point with Primus. High level musicians all around. Either way, Primus sucks!
Perfect analogy.
@@JungleScene Like Andy Summers. Weird, non-traditional sounds, but ALWAYS interesting. Not for everyone I'm very happy to say.
@@JungleScene I'd put Matt Freeman (Rancid) in the GOAT conversation. Listen to Axiom or Young Al Capone if you don't believe. Maybe BOH from BabyMetal too.
As any true Primus fan will proudly proclaim, "PRIMUS SUCKS!!" - They know what I'm talking about
"Hello... we are Primus... and yes we do suck!"
Primus suckkkks!!!!!!!
Any true Primus fan would know that Les has gone on record years ago as saying that he no longer likes the "Primus Sucks" thing.
runawayuniverse I’m new to being a Primus fan, like literally just started listening to them last month, and I’ve heard that from one or two people but also heard a lot of people still saying it, so I wasn’t sure if it was accurate and how serious les was about that
I just did above lol
Someone once described Primus and I agree: Primus is what you get when you play a bass solo, a guitar solo, and a drum solo at the same time.
Lol "I'm goin' down to South Park gonna have myself a time"......
Yup this is who sings the south park theme song
Yeah you got to do my name is mud by these guys also Les claypool the bass player got together with Julian Lennon John Lennon's son and they did a late sixties song by King crimson which was kind of a title track called Court of The Crimson King yeah there's a few songs that are really choice you might just have to go down that rabbit hole all right later you two
bryan hale ooooooo The Claypool Lennon Delirium. It would be a cool reaction tho
....."Friendly faces everywhere, humble folks without temptation."
Yes. More Primus, although I would stick to studio versions for your introduction to them. "Jerry Was A Racecar Drivet", "My Name Is Mud", "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver", "John The Fisherman"
Yes sir you are 💯 correct 👍
Add in too many puppies
Yes
Shake hands with beef! Southbound Pachyderm!
Also see 'Those damn Blue Collar Tweakers' and 'Golden Boy'.
That's actually Larry on guitar not the drums. ;)
When you break down the lyrics, the songs basically about cat sex.
I just choked on my coffee reading that lmao
@@ashemorgan1638 Well, I remember as it were a meal ago
Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter
May have nestled its way into his mighty throat
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down
The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine
Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator
Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell
But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did
She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit
The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the
Oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days
The sight was beyond belief
Many a head snapped for double--even triple--takes as this vivacious
Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most
Virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out
They hung in droves
Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place
And that was O'Malley's Alley
The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended)
But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into
The heart of the alleyway
She knew what she wanted
She was lookin' for that stud bull
She was looking for that he cat
And that was me
Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee
Say, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby, do you want to lay down by my side?
Ah, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby?
Say, baby?
This song is actually inspired by the great Tom Waits...
I thought also it was about hobos getting it on 😂 like Tommy the Cat is the king of hobos or something 😂
@@bigrob21361 I know I'm a year late but my wife loves Tom Waits...We even had someone sing Picture in a Frame at our wedding 🤣
The key to enjoying Primus is knowing that the weirdness is part of the act and just enjoying the groove. Give their Woodstock 94 performance of "Those damn blue collar tweakers" a peep and check out Jerry was a racecar driver, Wynonas big brown Beaver, Too Many Puppies and their best known track....My name is Mud
I was at Woodstock 94! I’m somewhere stage left around the crane camera. PRIMUS SUCKS
One of my favorite videos of Primus.

"Say baby do you wanna lay down with me, say baby do you wanna down by my side..." Actually Larry, aka Larr, is the guitar player...not sure if the live version is the best introduction to the world of Primus. Check out Jerry Was a Race Car Driver video.
*Ler
Yep, the official video for this song acts out the story line and the lyrics are easier to understand. Better introduction to the band and the song IMO.
Mr. Krinkle and Mary the Icecube.
Lmao! "We got larry on the drums" that's funny the guitarist is Larry Lalonde and he is a beast. This whole band is extremely talented I love Primus. Check out John the Fisherman! Les claypool (the bassist) is arguable the best bassist out there. Primus is an acquired taste but they grow on you. Once you get it, you'll become addicted. Primus Sucks!
I'm still baffled at how he can play those bass lines and sing at the same time. And Primus is definitely an acquired taste....lol.
Primus sucks
This song is a great intro, it’s their sound but it’s not quite as wacky, it’s hard to not bob your head to “say it baby do you want to lay down with me”
@@Alniemi say baby do you wanna lay down by my side
I thought the same thing
These are the guys that do the Southpark theme song. Les Claypool the bassist/singer is animated into the intro
Les wrote the theme for Robot Chicken as well.
Tommy the Cat is not the song for a Primus first timer, i would say Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, or Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, even Mr Krinkle but thats just my opinion
Always funny watching new people that are unaware of the Great Prog and Rock bands and Musicians that have been around for 25 to 50 yrs !! : )
Enjoy the ride, you got lot's of catching up to do. : D
"say, baby, do u want to lay down with me?"...
Les Claypool, the bassist and singer, is a bass genius. Primus is his original master band, but Les Claypool creates lots of ephemere bands, like the Frog Brigade or The buckethead projection, and Mandy others. He also creates his down instruments, and his shows are always an expérience. It is sometimes musically weird its true, but always à performance with instruments. Check out " The Awakening" from Les Claypool one day..
Take care, be safe, One Love
Primus is one of the few bands that got big in the 90s that truly fell into the "Alternative". There is also a lot of prog rock influence.
You guys are great together. Thanks for the excellent vid
Yea Fam! MORE PRIMUS! THE BEST BASSIST who ever lived Les Claypool. MORE BABY! No band you've ever heard of has the lead singer as the bassist
Rush. The Police.
Yup. That's how most people react to Primus. It kind of grows on you after a while.
The thing that gets me about Les Claypool every time I see him is just how easy he makes it look. That riff is really bloody tricky to play and he just makes it look effortless.
The lead singer/bass/frontman is Les Claypool and he is beyond the GOAT when it comes to the bass. This song is basically talking about a man(Tommy) chasing tail(getting laid). The Lyrics:
Well, I remember as it were a meal ago
Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter
May have nestled its way into his mighty throat
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down

The rephrase the "Primus sucks " comes from their performance at Woodstock '94 when I crowd member yelled that at out right before playing "those damned blue collared tweakers " where Claypool said "yes, we do " and played on. Phenomenal performance, by the way.
I'll be damned,a Primus reaction? I am sold...Les Claypool is a bass GOD
Seconding the recommendation to check out their Woodstock '94 performance of "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" , which is on CZcams with the slightly incorrect title, "Those Damn Two Collar Tweekers". Great performance, nasty bass work.
On the music vid side, "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and "My Name is Mud" are the go-to's. The vocals and lyrics on the latter won't be easy to pick up on though, which is kinda just how Primus roll.
Also Larry LaLonde plays the intro to Tweekers in this video as if it's the intro to Tommy. Not sure what's going on there, could be on purpose.
@@chrisdobbs9155 it was the outro to Tweekers, as they had just finished playing it before Tommy
Check out these songs by Primus - American Life, Too Many Puppies, Southbound Pachyderm, Over The Electric Grapevine, Nature Boy, Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweekers etc. etc.
Great job Pops on raising a great Daughter. Gives a honest opinion and not afraid to do so. Although I may not totally agree with it but that’s fine, I respect the honesty. Keep up being awesome to your Daughter! You guys rock and stay safe & healthy out there.
Thanks for the reaction!! I picked this one because it's easier to actually see him playing, but studio is definitely the way to go next. I'd highly recommend Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver next.
Mr Krinkle is an amazing one take video! Love to see that on on your channel
Primus is their own genre. Les Claypool is a beast of a bass player. You should check out some stuff he does with Sean Lennon in The Claypool Lennon Delirium.
Omg my all-time favorite Primus song. Almost tied with their cover of "have a cigar"
Primus and Les Claypool not everyone's cup of tea, you're right. but give 'em another couple of shots. they're a really cool band.
Primus is a band where I would go to their shows. But not a everyday listen for me. Very talented musicians. One of the few band where the lead guitar is the bass guitar.
They're a band definitely more about the music. It's mostly about the groove of the music, check the lyrics after if you dig the groove - but mostly they're for fun... Say baby do you want to lay down with me, say baby do you want to lay down by my side???
One thing to note here is that Les is doing two different vocal parts here: On the album version, he does the "smoother" parts and the gravely "Tommy the Cat" voice is provided by Tom Waits.
Les Claypool is a beast on the bass guitar....you will be craving bass so much afterwards you will go watch back to back episodes of Seinfeld....da doo doo doo dee dee da dee
FYI: This is the band that performs the South Park theme song.
Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers by Primus.
Primus is an acquired taste! They're a fun band to listen to. That bass is funky and can't be replicated by any other band! ✌💝💫
Man, you guys look like brother and sister. I am sure you get that a lot, lol. Love the videos!
This song is about Tom Waits and he actually narrates on the studio version that's why he uses the different mic for his part to emulate Tom Waits unique voice
Love how, as the song starts, her expression goes from "Yeah, whateva" to "Hold up, what's this?!"
He told you the wrong one to do. Watch the official videos. Watch Primus: My Name is mud.
Trust me you'll immediately understand why.
No, he did the right thing. Every single reactor who does the official videos can only focus on the weird visuals rather than the music itself.
The trade-off of doing studio version vs. live version is the former gives you more time and space to hear the lyrics and better appreciate the fine instrumentation, whereas the latter gives you the live crowd energy. It's easy enough to find a lyrics version video of this song with the studio track, so check it out if you like, but thanks for your reaction to this live Primus vid of Tommy the Cat.
Primus is their own vibe :) superb musicians who just love doing their own thing.
Dont forget how the guitar and drums are keeping up with Les. they are on point!
Get into Shake hands with beef or Laquerhead music videos to start with.
Then for the good stuff I recommend things like DMV, Frizzlefry, Too many puppies, Southbound pachyderm, To Defy the laws of tradition, American Life etc.
They have many wonderful sounding songs from multiple albums.
Laquerhead is probably the best introduction to primus. I think if they watched the music video for this they would have had a much better experience as well. Eleven is another good one for introduction to primus.
They are awesome in concert. We saw them with Slayer. Please watch Dead Puppies, you will love them. They are a unique jam band.
The closest classification for Primus is "funk metal," and they are truly one of a kind. Les Claypool brought the bass to the lead, equal to the guitar.
Took me a few tries myself to really feel this song. I first saw Primus back in Bill and Teds Bogus Journey and there was just something about them that intrigued me. I finally got to see them live at Red Rocks and you are right everybody was there having a good time.
Have a listen to the studio version of this song aswell =D
Larry Lalonde on guitar: In any other band he would be the centerpiece.
Hey Larry, do you play technical or by feel?
Larry: "Yes."
I listened to them as a kid. The other year I saw them live. Maybe one of the best shows ever.
You two are great together.
[Intro: Les Claypool & Tom Waits]
Well I remember it as though it were a meal ago

Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator. Tommy the cat had many a story to tell, but it was a rare occasion such as this that he did
[Verse 1: Tom Waits]
She came a'sliding on down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit
The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days
The sight was beyond belief. Many a head snapped for double even triple, takes as this vivacious feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most virile of the young tabbys were known to hang out. They hung out in droves
Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place... and that was O'Malley's Alley.
[Verse 2: Tom Waits]
The air was thick with catcalls (no pun intended)
But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered straight to behind the alleyway. She knew what she wanted. She was looking for that stud bull
She was looking for that He-cat. And that was me
Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee:
[Chorus: Tom Waits]
Say baby do you wanna lay down with me?
Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side?
Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me?
Say baby
Say baby (et cetera al coda)
Primus-shake hands with beef
Check out the music video for this song to understand it a little better. Live is not the way to go if you've never heard Primus before.
One of my favorites
Primus are one of the greatest thrash/funk/alt-rock bands, if not THE greatest.
As others suggested try the studio versions. Wynonas Big Brown Beaver is a fun song and video. And Jerry was a Race Car Driver
primus are a very abstract rock band, check out wynonas got a big brown beaver, my name is mud and laquer head
Cool reaction. He's saying: Say baby do you wanna lay down with me. Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side :)
Les, the singer\bassist, was born in Parkersburg WV and so was I
Please please please listen to the studio version. Primus got their start as a kind of 'son of Rush' band in the late 80s. Their album sound is VERY textured and produced with love. Live, well, Les is a fucking animal. So there's that.
This band truly helped form who i became as an adult and how wide my musical love has become.
I will say this though, the first time I heard primus I said "his voice makes me want to punch him in the face", but that was 15 years ago lol.
Also this is the band that does the intro for South Park and claypool himself did the intro for robot chicken on adult swim
Edit: he also has a band with JOHN LENNONS son called the Claypool Lennon delirium
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but back in the early days of digital music when folks were just starting to put the genre labels on songs, Primus was the only band with it's own label. You had "Rap", "Heavy Metal", etc. and then "Primus".
"SHE CAME SLIDING DOWN THE ALLEY WAY LIKE BUTTER DRIPPING OFF A HOT BISCUIT" :-D Ohhh :-D I love that lyric line
He's saying "say baby, do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby, do you wanna lay down by my side?"
Tommy the Cat's a player
Primus was actually categorized as its own genre of music.
Les Claypool is killer on the bass!!!
Not sure if they’re a rock band? They’re what’s called funk metal. Also try Jerry was a race car driver next time, and maybe have the lyrics pulled up next to it. And lastly, it’s say baby do you want to lay down with me, not hang other with me
Btw, the lead singer. Les Claypool is the bass player of this band...
Don’t worry, no one else understands them either :) We just love the funky bass.
I watch you all the time and whenever you talk I fast forward
More Primus! More Primus! More Primus! More Primus!
Its our duty, as primus fans, to hit up every reaction video person stream and donate enough to get this band out reacted on.
Ill give you 100 bucks and send you the dvd if you react to the WHOLE "hallucinogenics" concert sir.
"say baby do you wanna lay down with me?, say baby do you wanna lay down by my side?, say baby do you wanna lay down with me?, say baby.. SAY BABY!"
though this is a nice vid featuring Les' skill, if u wanna comprehend the song id watch the official vid. comes with lyrics. he is telling a story about "tommy the cat" and it all makes sense when u hear/see it.
Les Claypool is my personal fave bassist, he once tried out for Metallica, they turned him down for being too good lol.
u may recall the signature sound from South Park themes, this band features the Bass most prominently so already they are gonna sound pretty original, the wackiness is part of the act, you gotta have fun with it while being in awe of his skill.
One of the loudest rock bands I ever seen countless times.
To this day, still the best band ive seen live. That was in 96! Les is a god w that bass
"say baby do you wanna lay down with me, say baby do ya wanna lay down by my side, a baby do you wanna lay down with me, say baby, SAY BABY!"
"Say baby do you wanna lay down with me...Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side....."
it s actually larry on the guitar-larry lalonde who used to shred for one of the OG bay area metal bands in the 80s
gotta hit the button on the Bass Slap! XD
Still singing into Sandmam after all these years. ( it's the microphone he uses to sing the part of the cat.) It was left at a jam session by Mark Sandmam the singer and bassist of the band Morphine. He has said on more than one occasion that he was the bassist he respected the most for his innovation. Sadly he has passed, but he still uses that microphone.
"say baby, do you wanna lay down with me? say baby, do you wanna lay down by my side? baby do you wanna lay down with me? say baby... SAY BABY"
Seeing Van with a #STAYWOKE T-shirt on in 2023 is actually quite funny.
Listen also - THE AQUARIUM RESCUE UNIT with the song : NICE... Enjoy CIAO from ITALY...
Ohhh trust me....go to a live show and watch the people know what to do with their bodies. It's straight up a wild and good time. That bass hits hard too when it's live
Gotta listen to the studio version
I love Primus but when I was a hip hop DJ I would have killed for an instrumental version of Tommy The Cat so I'm certainly not mad at someone saying they might prefer it without vocals.Tbh I think to like this song live you need to have listened to a lot more Primus and the studio version of this so you can not only 'get the joke' that is Les Claypool's general writing and vocal style but also hear what he's saying in this song.
Yeah the song is about that slick cat or alley cat thats fckin always fckin anything that moves. Hes a slick talker sharp dress. You get it? Thats why he keeps saying baby do ya want to hang out with me. Lol love this band
My for real favorite band of all time is Primus.
One of the greatest videos of all time is PRIMUS: "Wynonnas big brown Beaver". Don't let the name scare ya.
Whoever has been suggesting this music for you is a legend.
If you don't know ... Claypool is one of the "Greatest" Bass Players of All Time !!!! As Voted by Bass Player Magazine and every Pro musician in Rock & Prog music !!
Along with Chris Squire of Yes, and Geddy Lee of Rush : D
Some people love the lyrics and others it grows on them in time.
Les Claypool doesn't get the accolades he deserves. I can't think of another bass player as talented.
Maybe not your cup of tea, but you can't deny the Funk. The Funk will not be denied.
when they were developing the genre tagging for the mp3 format primus was given the genre of ... primus. but id call it grunge-funk
It's all about that bass. If you want to dance, ya gotta follow the drums.
