  • This time of year, elderberries are just starting to get ripe so learn how to harvest and identify elderberries before the wildlife beats you to it! Elderberries are a wild edible commonly found across much of the United States. Elderberries have been used for centuries in folk medicine, boosting the immune system for cold and flu season. Learning to properly identify and harvest elderberries can come in handy if you want to make your own elderberry syrup, gummies, or other elderberry products (like elderberry tincture!).

They make the best jelly, and the dried berries are good in tea.

Most of ours are used for syrup, gummies, and wine. I add the syrup to my tea often!

Are elderberries unusable if picked not completely ripe?

If they are slightly unripe, they are still ok. Light purple, purple, and black are what we look for. Please avoid green or reddish/purple elderberries that haven't turned purple/black yet.

No, it grows in the same locations as elderberries. Often time in the same stand as the elderberry.
