We got into elderberries about 2 years ago. my wife has several medical issues modern medicine had her on 24 different medications after starting to drink the elderberry juice she is now off all but 2 medications. We now have planted 60 bushes on our farm and are working with a friend to put in a 5 acre farm dedicated to the elderberry so we can spread the love of the elder as wide as we can.

Hi from the Old World. My grandma used elder leaves to relieve pain in her knee, which occured occasionally. She would take fresh leaves, put them directly on, wrap it all ovenight and the next day she was fine. We also have a saying in Czech: "You take your hat off before chamomile, but you kneel before elderberry." I think it says a lot.

I'm from Austria, elderberry is food around here. We make syrup and tea from the blossoms and also fry them in dough. The berrys are used for syrup and jelly, canned as "Hollerkoch", dried for tea, and made into soup. My Family uses up 100 Liters of flower and berrysyrup in one year.
The leaves are fermented in water to repell mice that eat roots in the garden. The wood is used for toolhandles such as schovels, because the skinn will not blister( the wood gives of some kind of wax or fat and is very smooth). On the deadwood there grows a mushroom we call Judasohr( Ear of Judas) that we like to eat.
The bush either grows voluntarily besides the compostheap or is planted there, it brings order to chaos and attraktes beatles that chew the wood in the compost to little pieces.
It is a saying here that you should take of your hat when passing a Elderberrybush.
Oh i forgot the liquor and salve.

I have a lot of trees here in Hungary. I pick and fork the berries off the stems, wash them and boil them up with a spoon of sugar. When boiled for a few mins, I turn the power off and let them cook a bit longer and cool. Then I mash them up a bit more and strain them and push the pulp through a seive. I pour the juice into 275 ml bottles (little piccalo champers bottles) and freeze them, then cap them when frozen. Easier for me. Then In winter, I take out one each week and swig a mouthful each morning after my 3klm jog. Never ever get sick now.

So on a wood fire she cooks berries for 3 days straight and what you get is a thick brown gel, which is then poured in jars. So in winter time you make a simple drink of one tea spoon of this melasa with warm to hot water, mix well and drink. It is supposedly healthy, inflamatory, antivirus drink. I would harvest a bunch every October when I lived in Oregon, and put it in my freezer. I would fill up about two five gallon buckets with elderberries. Once frozen they can easily be removed from the stems. Then I would boil 'em down and it would look like blood. I would make about a gallon of syrup every week all winter long. My syrup was just elderberry decoction with sugar to taste. It makes great cocktails for the holidays. I just take it off the stove, still hot, and add vodka and have vodka and elderberry drinks. Soooo good! Also, instead of cranberry sauce for thanksgiving, I would make elderberry sauce. Yum yum yum. I just did it for the taste; not getting sick ever was a side benefit.
My friends would also make elderberry wine. Elderberry wine is part of the culture where I lived in Oregon. So good. I love elderberry.
Another friend of mine made flutes out of the branches since they are hollow, and he even made saxophones by attaching a saxophone reed to a stem.
The autumn is such a good time to harvest medicinal herbs that get you through the winter.
A tea I made to give to family and friends for holiday gifts was wildcrafted dried elderberries, wildcrafted dried rose hips, wildcrafted dried manzanita berries. Just put some in a pot of water and make a decoction on your stove. You can keep adding water and keep getting more cups of tea. It looked all yuletide these nice bright red and dark purple berries rich in vitamin C and immune boosting properties and anti-oxidants.

Here in Eastern Washington State I just harvested elder, I also noticed wild rose hips were ready for harvest too. I thought it was so lovely that both these plants are used for increasing immunity and just so happen to be ready for harvest going into the colder months. So I put them together in an alcohol extract.

@I C - Sometimes alcohol doesn't extract everything you want from a herb. Things that are water soluble are not always able to dissolve properly in alcohol. For general extractions a water alcohol combination is best. For extremely resinous things pure alcohol is better than 190 proof alcohol. Yes I know it is 95% pure but 200 (100) beats 190 (95).

I have an immune disorder. Since diagnosis I've noticed just how sensitive I am to everything I put in and on my body. First it was processed foods, then dairy, then meats... Most recently I've become more and more in tune with essential oils, herbs, and their medicinal properties. And my quality of life is on the rise.
I'm so grateful this channel popped up. I only wish I didn't live on a concrete slab. I'll have to visit the shop... Thanks for the knowledge. For someone like me it's nearly a life or death matter. My body won't tolerate modern medication for too long (it took only 4yrs for meds to injur my kidney where most notice nothing). Not only do I need to nourish myself but I also must rebalance my body... Give back what medication and illness have stripped from it.

Spring the lemonade made out of flowers of Elderberry was the most common "juice" served with Rose petal Lemonade, winter was the Elderberry syrup which would be made really thick concentrate and during winter they would mixed it with water and serve it as juice.

I felt like she did that to me because she’s one of the first really growing big and giving me a glimps of what’s to come. But now that you’ve mentioned that the elder is helping and showing other plants how to do it, to grow strong and healthy.. I can picture it. Totally!

The black elderberry grows wild here in MO. I planted 10 plants 4 years ago. I prune them down each year to 6 to 8 inches. The deer like to rub their antlers on the branches in the fall, so the ones the deer don't rub, I take those branches and cut them into 12 to 24 in sticks, pruning with 2 buds (nodes) to plant below the ground and 1 to two buds above. This is done in January here. I have 95% success rate, over 100 plants now. Pruning back gives you larger heads too. I freezes the berries in ziplock bags, then when I'm ready to use them the berries pop right off those little stems.
