  • Police in Tampa, Florida, are conducting a review following criticism of a sign-language interpreter's performance at a high-profile press conference. An expert says the interpreter was signing gibberish while standing next to officials announcing the arrest of a suspected serial killer. Watch Derlyn Roberts sign at the Nov. 28 press conference.

      I can read some sign (also sign myself)..and some of her words are actually correct. She is doing a direct (word) translation in some places instead of using the true ASL form and structure. I feel like she has the kindergarten level ability to sign..but tried to do it at a college level. So she got some wrong..faked some..and mixed up homonyms. So maybe she is a criminal in her every day life..but in this case, she wasn’t a total fraud. Just sayin.

    • @RavenBells
      @RavenBells Před 6 lety +224

      Well, she isn't producing ASL. She's using ASL vocabulary, and she's using it appropriately, but she isn't applying any grammar or syntax of the language. The result isn't ASL, PSE, or SEE. It's a bunch of disjointed and unconnected signs and concepts. On it's own, it does't make sense and gives virtually no real information.
      She clearly has experience with ASL, and under low-pressure circumstances is possibly conversationally fluent, but fluency does not an interpreter make. She is following WAY too closely to properly process what is being said. Virtually no processing time leaves no room to rework sentences into proper ASL sentence structure, so she often backs herself into a corner where she has to resort to English word-order. Not to mention that following so close with no processing time means a lot of information gets lost as she tries to process at high speed, so entire chunks of information are being dropped. Something we are privileged to as hearing people, but something a Deaf client would be unaware of. I would be very surprised if she has more than a scant amount of interpreting experience.
      Source: I've been signing for 10 years, am in an ASL Interpretation Bachelor's program, and just finished my second semester of ASL/English comparative linguistics.

      I'm an interpreter. She's not interpreting. She is also signing several things wrong. She is producing words here and there that match the words he is saying. That's like listening to a Spanish conversation and tossing out the vocab you understand once in a while. Banana! 21! Gun! Work! They might be the right but they don;t make a sentence or an interpretation. She keeps signing "before" for "Later" its frustrating. Ans not funny.

    For those who are wondering if she is signing complete gibberish, she is not. She is not just waving her hands around and creating her own signs. She was actually using signs that are in ASL, really basic beginner words like “day”, “night”, “please”, “say”, “community “ etc. Even her signs for numbers like “6” and “8” are correct, as these numbers are shown very differently by hearing people compared to in ASL. I can tell that she has very basic knowledge of ASL, but just not enough to thoroughly convey a message. She even knows to fingerspell names when they were mentioned, although her alphabets were complete gibberish, a person with no knowledge of ASL would not know that. To describe what her signing is like to people who dont know ASL, i would compare her to speaking like a toddler. She is not making full sentences, she is just signing a few words pulled out from the actual message. ASL is not just about moving hands, it is also facial expression and body language. Her facial expression and body language does not really convey much but the fact that she is thinking “what’s the sign for that..?” So yes, she is in fact using actual signs but she is just not using them fluently and accurately. She is just not qualified enough for this role. But if there is anything to take away from this, I appreciate that she has the very basic knowledge for ASL, almost enough to communicate with a deaf person. Many people may laugh at her, but how many of you can actually communicate with the hearing impaired?

  • @culturedsalt02496
    @culturedsalt02496 Před 5 lety +169

    As a student in a sign language interpreter prep program this makes me laugh. Some of her signs are correct, but she doesn't know the grammar structure or syntax of ASL. For example, when the officer says, "Two weeks ago, 60 year old Ronald Felton was murdered," what she signed was roughly equivalent to saying "Two weeks ago Ronald Felton killed..." (She didn't even really fingerspell his name right, it was roughly the equivalent of doing this: Rfjknsnfjjnngfkn, but I left in his name for clarity).The English sentence the officer used was passive voice, which can be difficult to interpret in ASL. So with her interpretation she literally signed that all the people who were murdered were actually the ones killing.
    This is what happens when people think taking a few ASL classes turns them into a qualified interpreter.

    • @RomoWasntBuiltInADay
      @RomoWasntBuiltInADay Před 6 lety +2

      my mind and body she didn’t hurt nobody. Just a couple laughs. Plus if she didn’t interpret, no one else was there to do it. No harm done. If she was getting paid then that would be another story. You can bring up ethics, but we should look harsher at the police department that didn’t see the need to hire anyone to sign.

    • @RomoWasntBuiltInADay
      @RomoWasntBuiltInADay Před 6 lety +3

      my mind and body it’s not her responsibility to call anyone. Shy was there trying to help. It could have hurt some one if they were not given the right info? Bro, it was her or no one. They weren’t gonna get the info regardless. Why are you harsher on her rather than them?

    • @RomoWasntBuiltInADay
      @RomoWasntBuiltInADay Před 6 lety +1

      my mind and body I never said she helped, I said she tried to help. None the less, they weren’t getting the information regardless. There was no harm done. Ps 2 of the best mechanics I ever met never went to school, at all! Immigrated to the USA young and worked their entire lives. They learned mechanic work in the streets. One ended up in ford and Chevrolet dealership, while the other one managed to become pretty wealthy off it as a street mechanic after being arrested and serving time. Your degrees don’t mean anything. How many times are you willing to fail to succeed? That’s what matters. And that’s what she did... not everyone has the privilege to go to college like other people

    • @RomoWasntBuiltInADay
      @RomoWasntBuiltInADay Před 6 lety +2

      my mind and body why is she not in jail? Ummm, oh yeah because she didn’t break the law. She was trying to help. She was not paid. Here, take this for instance, if you witness someone dying and you were not cpr certified, are you not gonna at least try to help? Even if the person dies, you are not at fault because you tried to save a life at all cost. There is no harm done. It’s either you or no one. Any idiot can save my life if I’m dying, no matter how inexperienced he\she might be, if there is no professional around, I want them to try. End of story... or think about it like this, if you’re dying, would you want everyone to rush to help you? Or rather them stand still watch you and call 911 and wait 15 min for them to come?

    fun fact: she’s actually signing the words he’s saying, but not as accurately as a trained interpreter would. i feel like she knows some sign, but not nearly enough to interpret at this level. then again, i guess they got more than they paid for considering she wasn’t even paid and just volunteered. i’m only an ASL 1 student tho, so if anyone wants to say more on this, go ahead.
