Blue and Yellow make green.... I misspoke... but for some reason when blending Spectra Flame paints, Green and yellow give a teal blue. I should have explained myself there...
Mwoah. If the green paint is made from mixing blue and yellow....adding a yellow later could result in a blue-ish shine. And yes, that maybe hard to see on video, but IRL your eyes can play that trick on you....
baremetalHW My 7 year old son loves watching your videos! He wants to see you restore a few of his Disney Pixar Cars toys. He has hundreds and we would definitely send you a few if you’d be interested. We have several duplicates as well!
Yes, pigments can combine in ways that do not appear in the elementary how to books and videos! The reason is that paints you buy commercially are not typically based on a single monochromatic pigment. Instead, most paints are a mixture of pigments and thus non-canonical mixing effects occur when you put them together. The one thing that surprises me is that manufacturers usually push the trouble into the so-called "non spectral hues" i.e. blue/red mixes (so you get mud instead of purple). The yellow/green/blue set usually behaves as would be expected. I suspect that the additional conditions set on a transparent spectra flame job made it impossible for them to _also_ obey the green+yellow=yellowish green rule.
.For us who got stuck at home , constantly depressed by the bad news out there, losing our jobs, and still hoping for the best, youtube and of course your channel is a relief. Thank you! From Eastern EU
Nitpick but you said yellow and green make blue instead of blue and yellow make green ;) As for the sandblasting method, it looks pretty close to the original look you are going for. As someone mentioned blow, you can try soda blasting, it's a much finer medium and will probably yield an even closer match with less detail loss and noticeable pitting.
Glad you started with yellow. A graphic designer once told me, at least in printing always start with yellow/ lightest tone. Darker tones go last. When you do the darker as the base it takes a lot of layers of the lighter tones to cover over the darker parts. I used to work in commercial embroidery. When I had blends of colors to design, before I knew this, If I had yellow on top of red, red bits would always show through in the wrong sections. It really made designing the sewing files easier to get the effect right. Sometimes I miss doing the embroidery cad work. On a good day, it was being paid to color. On a tedious day, it was hand drawing lots of letters. Graphics were usually more fun. It’s been almost 20 years since I worked in that industry.
I'm a complete VW Beetle/Van nut and this paint-job just makes this Bug pop!! I love it!! Thanks for the hints and tips; I now know what my next project is gonna be...
Thank you, watching this is a great way to start the day. I love how much thought you'd put into the blending of the colours to make sure you were using the right paint in the right place. It came out great.
My 7 year old loves watching your videos, and has been begging me to send you some of his beat up Disney Pixar Cars toys for restoration lol. Would love to send some if you’d be interested!
Other than having a collection of Batman hotwheels cars and a 5 year old girl who loves hotwheels, I dont really take an interest. But your channel is not only enjoyable to watch. Its informative and your passion is bleeding out of your videos. Been looking at buying some of my childhood faves. Thanks for what you do 🤘
You are simply the best hands down. The only one who explains everything and shares thoughts, Nothing of destroying cars on purpose to make them look aged with cofee grindings. You're THE guy who truly restores. Keep the good work, and hope in the future to see you restoring bigger scale models :D
It turned out absolutely wicked looking Jeff. I like the system you have come up with for the spectra flame. Can't wait to see what you do next my friend 🍻
Many or rather most of them were thrown away due to toddlers and the like eating them. Or they were lost under Mom's fridge or dishwasher only to be rediscovered 20yrs later.
I appreciate the consideration for those stuck at home. I don't go back to school until April 6th so I've got a bit of time on my hands. Hope everyone is well.
That is well done my friend, I really don't like those Wheels but they work well on that beetle. Now that you have pointed it out, I understand why the new rlc stuff is a different look. You did a fantastic job my friend.
aw, a checkerboard full of HW beetles for figures would have been nice for a lot of aircooled VW freaks I'm sure. :) (useless trivia, "pawn" in german is called "Läufer", which translates to "runner") love the colours. lively and playful, and you half-expect them to colourchange while moving... :)
Tip for 4-15-2020 When re-gluing CA glue on straight axle cars. Put a gate "glob" of paraffin wax in all 4 corners of base. Set axle on base into wax then use thumb to heal the slot around wax . Wax will hold axle in place "center and squared" Glue as usual. CA glue will not get into tire hubs. You could use plumbers putty if that's all you have... But most people have a candle around the house somewhere.. If not steal one from your grandsons birthday cake... LOL... Most paraffin wax will soften enough with body heat. From Pintony
Like the rainbow paint job you did a great job from what I can tell. I would like to see a step by step on exactly how you sprayed the colors to get them.to blend from one to another. I think that would be a cool video to watch
First off, I've always enjoyed your videos. But this format is quite nice. I like the quick cut to the finished product, although I've always enjoyed watching the full process, but this makes for a very entertaining video. Quality work start to finish.
Suggestion, and this is based on personal taste: Consider getting a soft box / diffuser for your LED light, this will conceal the grid of individual LED elements visible in the reflection on the paint. You can even just tape a piece of printer paper such that it bows out over the front of the light. I realize that you might find the visible LED grid useful for checking the paint finish, but I thought I'd suggest it because you're a technical person, and at the end of the day HW customization is all about the looks!
great rainbow fade! i get your commenters different POVs - im in the camp of better than stock or custom - but i know a lot of the time you are trying to achieve an actual factory finish - either way your results are usually spot on!

we all misspeak at some point.. we knew what you meant ... it's all good
Had me doubting myself for a second, thanks for clarifying

I know you didn't ask but, green and yellow make light(er) green, not blue. Love the car btw
that is the comment i was looking for, thanks :)

It looks nice and glossy to me. Great job on making this unique paint scheme.
Try soda blasting .... much more gentle.
It's also less expensive
Good call. 👍

Instant classic.🌈 Nice to have some vibrant color at a time like this.
Thanks for posting! The rainbow paint job on this looks really great!
It's easy to see why Mattel didn't do this back in the day, but it makes me wish they had! Awesome combo, wheels and all!
The Beetle is just a timeless frickin' car.
Especially in yellow.
Preferably with an Autobot symbol on it.

My comments shall consist of, "Love it," and "super cool, awesome sauce! I love ombre!"
Interesting technique. Not at all how I thought it would go. I enjoyed watching it come together.
From all of my vast experience peeing in toilets with the blue sanitizers, I know that yellow & blue make green... :)
PS Awesome job on the Beetle!
Looks difficult but you did a great job 👍. Keep the videos coming. Thank you.
Does anyone still have a collection of those micro-machine cars that were popular in the early 90s?

Very cool paint scheme. I dig the rainbow look on this car
That is a really neat effect done on the perfect car for it. The colors fade into each other so smoothly. A real VW done up like that would be wild.
