    • @strixcz
      @strixcz Před 3 lety

      Exactly, I actually sent way more (and way longer) texts on my old Nokia (with T9 which was actually predictive texting turned off - I hated the feature) than on my smartphone. I started to use it in November and I still find typing a message on a damn touchscreen super inconvenient (even with swipe and smart predictions - it's just slower and more prone to errors) :D

  • @eeboy3
    @eeboy3 Před 5 lety +656

    T9 allowed you to only press the buttons once instead of tapping them multiple times. For a five-letter word, you pressed a total of five times, and from the system's dictionary it wrote the most probable word. It also proposed other alternatives of words. 43556 -> HELLO
    My first phone was a Nokia 3310 which I received when I was 10 years old. It had just been released.

      T9 is a predictive text technology for mobile phones. T9's objective was to make it easier to enter text messages. It allowed words to be formed by a single keypress for each letter, which was an enormous improvement on the multi-tap approach used in conventional mobile phone text entry at the time, in which several letters were associated with each key, and selecting one letter often requires multiple keypresses. - Wiki

  • @james11h
    @james11h Před 5 lety +19

    What you’re describing is the ABC thing where you hit each key a bunch of time to get each letter. T9 used predictive text so you’d only have to hit the key once and it’d guess what word you were trying to type and you’d toggle through options with the down key. Come on, Lou!

    @TheSwaroopB Před 5 lety +1

    T9 doesn't mean you've to press a key 3 times to reach to letters such as 'c', 'f', etc. Rather T9 is exactly the opposite -- it's a predictive mechanism where you press the key only once but the sequence of such keystrokes forms words that you're most likely to type. Back in the day, we would get used to the word that it'd spew out with certain key sequence and also the number of times you'd press * to get to the alternative word with the same sequence that you're willing to type!

    I feel like the makers of this phone are missing a fundamental usability issue here, that being, people do want less distraction, but I think most people do not want to have to revert back to an old user interface and experience to get it. T9 input, physical buttons, black berry etc. A lot of people won't even know what these things are!?
    Why not release a minimal phone with a completely stripped down version of Android that let's you access the basics. Phone, contacts list, calendar, text/whatsapp, basic navigation, bluetooth and your favorite music option (Spotify/iTunes). That way you keep the attributes of the phone to the bare minimum, but keep the familiar UX and UI, meaning that you don't have to relearn anything. Even make the UI grey scale to promote limited use or use a different type of screen technology, such as that used on the Kindle etc. Which would also help to preserve battery life.
    Even though you want people to use there phone less, you want the user to have a good, quick and easy experience when they do pick up the phone. This isn't it.
    Does anyone know if there is an Android skin that does this? i.e puts your phone into a bare-bones state?
