    I remember I was in 4th grade and just walked home from school. Nobody was home yet so I turned on the tv and went straight to WGN. At that point, he had 8 strikeouts. I sat in awe of how he was dominating Biggio and Bagwell's Astros. I was a pitcher for my summer league team (Cubs) so I use to try and emulate Kerry Wood's mechanics. I will never forget that day.

    Most dominating pitching performance ever and against a great lineup and team that won 102 games that year in 1998. And I'll go ahead and say it, Kevin Orie should've made that play and it would have been an immaculate perfect game.

    • @miker6570
      @miker6570 Před 6 lety +4

      But if the Orie play would've been called a E-5 the hit would not count. And this could've been almost perfect game and 20k's for Wood. Which sounds a lot better than a 1 hit shutout.

      The Cubs were the new Braves with Prior, Wood, and Zambrano. It was the best 1-2-3 punch since Maddux/Glavine/Schmoltz and they were all young. It haunts me to this day what that team could have been if healthy.

    Why didn't they do a video like this with Roger Clemens? He did it twice. But agreed, this is one of the most if not THE most dominating game ever pitched.

    • @jrshipley
      @jrshipley Před 3 lety +3

      The '86 Mariners lost nearly 100 games. The '96 Tigers lost over 100. Clemens gave up three hits and a run against the Mariners and five hits to the Tigers. Wood dominated a very good team and was inches away from a no-no. It's no comparison. More videos is good though.

    Wood later said that on the last strike out he felt something in his elbow but ignored it and pitched his next start anyway which likely contributed to his arm trouble that shortened his career. How good could he have been?

    • @digitalutopia1
      @digitalutopia1 Před 3 lety

      I think the problem was that I think we're asking the wrong question. Instead, maybe it's better to ask if Wood could've been so dominant that game, if he pitched in a way that wouldn't end with him injured.
      Wood was practically violating the laws of physics on some of those pitches, and I think his arm paid the price for it.

  • @robertfield4103
    @robertfield4103 Před 6 lety +1

    Wood should have been tossed from the game for unfair play. Those pitches were completely unhittable.

    • @musicman76enator
      @musicman76enator Před 6 lety +1

      The Hardcore Proyect Well not necessarily, even if he did stay healthy maybe he still would have decided to retire prior to 2016? Or maybe Cubs management decided to part ways for salary purposes? We will never know. I do agree with you though on the fact that Dusty Baker overused Kerry Wood and essentially diminished his career.

    • @williamkoscielniak820
      @williamkoscielniak820 Před 3 lety

      Had Dusty not used Prior and Wood as much as he did the Cubs don't make the playoffs that year, and keep in mind they were five outs away from the world series. I don't blame Dusty for riding his horses when he needed them, especially with such a weak bullpen. Some players just can't stay healthy. Back in the day pitchers would routinely pitch nine innings on 3 days rest. So as much as I think Dusty made a lot of mistakes I absolutely do not blame him for riding Wood and Prior.

    • @digitalutopia1
      @digitalutopia1 Před 3 lety

      @@williamkoscielniak820 Dusty certainly made mistakes in that game, but Wood's problems were merely a result of his mechanics. And Prior pitched because he wanted to pitch - nobody held a gun to his head.
