Seal up the ceiling for the garage door install

  • In this video I show some steps to try and create an air gap in the ceiling above the garage door opener. The garage originally had insulation and drywall, but the roof leaked a few years ago and those two bays right above the garage door opener got soaked and I had to pull it all down. With the old garage door opener, it was installed under the drywall, and it had the worm drive track at the bottom of the rail so I was able to put cardboard sheeting above it to create an air gap. The new one has the belt on the top and so is a bit harder to create something above it.
This is the first time trying out my older tape camera that records in HD. It is a canon hv20. I think this will work and I may not need a gopro like I thought. As I was able to get my hauppauge HD pvr to connect to the camera and all the drivers to play nice. I used lightworks x64 v14.0 to do the editing....and it all looks to have worked ok.
So I will have to try a few more videos with this setup to see if I like it or not. In any case, the cardboard above the garage door opener will allow me to create an air gap which should help to keep the garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

The new unit with the chain on top looks like it's going to rattle it's way through the drywall and damage the unit with embedded DW, can you replace the same type of old unit?

The new unit is a belt drive vs a chain drive on top (which does make it quieter) and there is no drywall touching it currently, just cardboard, and the unit is rock solidly mounted now for the action of the up/down for the door. I am hoping this will work for years. This was replaced late in an evening (9-11:30pm) on an emergency replacement basis, so I did not have a lot of choices for what it got replaced with. So far it seems to work great. If it ever fails I may re-do it with a screw drive like it had before. But so far, it works. :)
