I Buy a Fake GBA Game (and then DESTROY it!)

  • Just a reminder that fake GBA games are VERY common. Out of all the retro cartridge based systems in the past the GBA might be one of the most popular ones to fake games on. It's not just the Pokemon games either as you might expect but really almost anything. Sometimes even generic mundane games you wouldn't expect to be faked are. So you really have to keep an eye out on the games you're buying and if they're rare or expensive games (like those Pokemon games!) I'd even go a step further and open the cartridge to look at the PCB and compare to other known good boards. Here it was pretty obvious upfront as the label art wasn't even trying to copy the real game. But even if they used the right art the other signs (crooked label, too shiny, no stamped code, no Nintendo printed on PCB) should give it away.

    These bootlegs usually can be reprogrammed using a DS actually.
    But sometimes it doesn't work and that's how i ended up breaking a bootleg copy of Totally Spies 2.
    Supposedly though the GBxWriter has more luck reprogramming certain bootleg cartridges.

      Neither does Wonder Boy in Monster World. The tech used is actually different than those used in say a GBA cart.

    I’ve seen another video on CZcams before about comparing fake and real GBA games, and this one seems to be no exception.
    My only way of determining fake or real GBA cartridges is to look for "Nintendo" written on the PCB. But even then, fakes may have the lettering written on the PCB, so this makes it harder to determine the real copy.

    I bought a fake copy of Doom for the GBA when I was young. It was so cheap, but it was a fake. I couldn’t save, but I think it was worth it at the time. Doom was one of the best back in the day.

    I accidentally bought a fake SMB3 GBA cart a while back. It was an odd case of the fake label looking more legitimate because I wasn't aware of how minimal the real one was. I don't remember how well that version performed. I think it was pretty unreliable. However, the legitimate SMB2 I bought is also unreliable. Best way to spot fake games is looking at the PCBs. Sellers who know their stuff should open the carts and show the PCB. When I was buying the Pokemon games used, I bought most of them with the labels missing(how does that even happen?). As they are translucent, I could easily see if they were legit from the pics on ebay. It's not too common, but some GBA games earlier on did use batteries for their saves, so that's not a telltale sign in every case. As I recall, my copy of Metroid Fusion has the battery. Later versions didn't.

      This brings back a childhood memory. When I was 12 or 13 I was with my Dad at one of our local car lots after hours. Our then late model Ford Explorer was built on a Friday by day drinkers apparently, so Dad was looking at trading it off. Anyways; I found a GBA cart laying in a puddle with no sticker. A mystery game at the car lot! Woohoo! I took it home and dried it out. It turned out to be "Men In Black" and it worked fine. I still have it somewhere.

    I once fell victim to a fake cart. Minish Cap I think it was. IIRC, I got to a point in the game where it soft locked and I could never get past beyond a certain point. It was either intentional copyright protection from Nintendo or unintentional crappy product from bootleggers.

    I'm glad to see someone destroying fake games because honestly, they shouldn't exist. i own a complete Japanese copy of Super Mario Advance 4 with a few e-Reader cards and almost a complete US set including the Wall-Mart exclusives. hoping for a complete set possibly this year. One of the best GBA games released.

    My view on counterfeits of vintage games is that I really don't care so long as they work well, look convincing, and are cheap. I recently bought the DS version of "Goldeneye" off eBay. It looks real and plays perfectly. I paid around $5 for it. If I were later to find out that it isn't real, meh. At that price point it's worth it regardless.
    Or if they're an expensively priced reproduction then they should at least be declared as such - because there's some games where thanks to low production runs the only way you'll ever get to play them on original hardware is with a repro cart. I read the other comments before typing this one and saw where MN-12 wrote that the seller was passing this one off as a legit copy for big bucks. Moose sized bucks. Are male moose called bucks like male deer are? I'm digressing. The point is that's wrong to rip people off like that and I'm hopeful Amazon will figure out that person is bad news sooner rather than later.

    • @MN12BIRD
      @MN12BIRD  Před 5 měsíci

      certainly possible if the PCB is thicker it will bend the pins more I suppose. Not to mention if resistance in the circuit is higher or something shorts!

      Says he bought it from Amazon. Amazon knows their marketplace is full of counterfeits and fraud so when you’re a victim of it they tend to refund you and not waste giving a shipping label to get a counterfeit back. I assume that’s what happened here too.

      @MN12BIRD  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@KingEurope1So thing is someone bought it for me but didn't want me to say so (hence I said I bought it but I wouldn't have bought this on Amazon for what they paid it was too much!) and it was too late by the time they found out it was fake to do anything about it but they did still want me to destroy it so I happily agreed to do that!

  • @LethalBubbles
    @LethalBubbles Před 5 měsíci +1

    if the circuitry is up to par then you could reflash them instead of being nintendo's unpaid copyright mafia. idc how common it is, destruction is barbaric and always deserves a downvote

    • @MN12BIRD
      @MN12BIRD  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The circuitry was literal garbage you saw it and the person who bought it for me (and didn't want to be named hence I said I bought it) wanted it destroyed my god dude I think most people would be happy to see this cheap trash be destroyed rather than get back out there where it could be sold to someone else. I certainly don't want it and if I give it away it might end up being sold to someone again. This video isn't even monetized (none of my videos are despite being able to for like 15 years!) so it's not like I'm just destroying it for views. I don't care about views never have never will. My videos are made for fun in my spare time as always so downvote that if you must I guess.

      @@MN12BIRD Is this your view towards all reproduction cartridges or just the ones that are being advertised as ''legit'' and ''original'' on the internet and sold for a very high price like in your case?
      I own lots of reproduction carts from China as they don't cost me $1000 like for an original cart so i'm proud to own them but I never at all pretend they're the original carts from back in the day and would never resell them that way. I have a lot of respect for you BIRD, I remember how big and popular you were back in 2009 and 2010, your videos always made Mark from CGR look like child's play, but I have to admit, I hate seeing people destroy cartridges.
