These are great tips, but it’s difficult to visualize with the pictures of grander entryways. For modest homes, there are narrow entryways or you’re just falling into the living room or kitchen. I would love to see more practical photos instead of the “Architectural Digest” style homes.

Lisa please show the entry way of just a normal 3 bedroom, 1 lounge room home. Very few of us have the grand sweeping staircase, or double doors entry. Most of them have kids, dogs, there will be no calling cards announcing the arrival. We would maybe like to think that this would be great, but realistically!!!

@@caseyl2313 😉Before you groan about ugly flat pack furniture, IKEA has several different shallow shoe cabinets w/tilt drawers,〰️range from more modern styles to more traditional.
🔨Some hang on a wall, while others are meant to lean on it (over your footboards). 💲They are affordable. (Sometimes you can find 'em cheaper in return section too.) 🔆The major point is they all fit perfectly down narrow hallways or walkways without impeding on the 👣 footprint🔆.
⚠️ They create a petite landing for
🔑keys (bowl) or 📨mail (small tray). Hang a 🪞mirror or other art above them. Use top ledge as a place to prop & layer 3 pieces of framed art🖼️. Put a plant in pretty pot🪴. Display a pair of small or tall, slim matching lamps🏮 on top on each end. Make a charging station. (Hide the 🔌power cables discreetly under units w/command hooks.)
👩‍💻Zillions of amazing online hacks🛠️ to tailor these various units to suit your own decor. Take 'em from generic to high style. They are easy to 🖌repaint or reface the exterior in many ways. Hemnes might have the most online tutorials for entryways, but you can adapt most of those same ideas for all units.
Ppl put multiple units side x side〰️& add a fabric runner or woven placemat across tops. Some use a single plank (stained or painted to match) as a topper to unify them. 🤗You're only limited by research skills &/or imagination.
Storage doesn't have to be for shoes👟. You can tuck 🛍️ bags, 🧤mittens, 🧣scarves, library📚 books, 👓sunglasses, etc. Options:

My daughter has a small, thin console table immediately to the right of her entry door. They use it for keys , mail etc ( random lego, or dinosaur may make an appearance) to the left of the door she has a small tasteful bench where they remove their shoes, above the bench are hooks on the wall to hold outerwear, hats and in today’s world face masks. There is a basket at the far end of the bench where shoes are kept. It looks stylish and functions for their family of 4, with 2 young boys ( ages 5 & 2 ) I hope this helps!

These are lovely entry ways but many houses don't have grand entryways. How would you style a small entry or an entry for a split level home where you have a small landing pad with stairs going up and down. I would love the history you provide and the examples but I would love to see how to implement in many types of entries.

I lived in a house with split foyer design. Hated it. You open the front door and are immediately faced with either going up or down stairs. There was no room for even a tiny stool. No wall space for hooks.

When I lived in Monterey years ago, I had exactly this type of home. When you opened the door, you hit a wall and the stairs ran up/left and then down/left. You always saw this little bare landing. I placed a rich looking narrow chest of drawers there and a fabulous table lamp with a mirror behind it. Would keep a gorgeous vase with either stargazer lillies or branches etc. Because of the lamp and lighting, everyone who saw the little landing or came in seemed so fascinated by the little display. No space for a bench tho-- guess you could tuck it under just a console...

I live in a bungalow - the front door opens directly into the living room! I've done my best to hang coat hooks and have places for shoes, but it's a small room and a small house so there's a lot of non-entryway things going on there too (TV, piano, toys...) I can't think where I'd put a mirror and I DEFINITELY don't have room for a little table or plants! I guess the upside is that you're already in the middle of the house when you walk in, so it's only a few steps to the dining room table and if we have flowers on that table they are in clear view when you walk in the door.

Related to that for me would be:
How to create the sense of an entryway in a small house, where the door simply opens directly into the small living room. I need to come up with something that serves the ‘entry hall’ purposes (place for keys/mail/purse/bag/remove coat in winter) until I’m ready to proceed into the rest of the house. I moved from a house of over 2000 sq. ft. with an attached garage that led into a mud room, into a tiny 820 sq. ft house with street parking near the front door. (Unwanted divorce...stupid...but here I am...) I’ve played around a little, but...it’s just barely working. Help?
Edit: I should have clarified that I’m now in a small, Midwestern village RENTAL. 😆 So I can’t count on the landlord being down for me to ask for/put in a can light...chandelier would be out of place...God forbid, the Boob Light.... You just open the door and there you are in the corner of a 10’ x 15’ room, looking at two love seats, and a chair and a half (plus end tables and lamps of course). Oh and farmhouse kitsch...😂 Just no. This is a rooster-free zone.
      Anyone feel challenged yet??

I love that you don't edit out your errors! It shows you're human and can laugh at yourself. You never fail to bring a smile to my face. You know, a grand entryway is the first way a visitor gets to meet you and your style. Everything in our home means to much to us. My own style veers toward grays, marble, some black/white, a sedate and restful palette with small shots of color here and there. My hubby is all about warm wood, tans/browns (I call them various shades of dirt). He is far too opinionated when it comes to furnishings, I'm used to men saying, "Go ahead, get what you want". Not him! Having some decor ideas that appeal to both cool- and warm-toned lovers would help a great deal. It took us quite a while to find some great rugs that include both grays and tans that didn't break the bank! We liked it so much we have an 8x10 in the living room, a 5x7 in the entry and one in the reading nook and a pair of matching runners in front of the sliders, oh and one more outside the sliders to act as an entry mat. Your style tips are perfect and never fail to make me imagine something bigger, better and, sometimes, more colorful!!

I’m so happy I’ve hit all the marks in this video . I really struggled with my terra cotta colored tile in my entry UNTIL I changed my mind set and embraced the architecture like you mentioned. I was able to bring warm neutrals in like I wanted and threw in a couple of cool colored entry doors for a pop of color. It all came together when I quit obsessing about the floor color and just accepted and followed the flow. Love your channel and so pleased that I found you! ❤️

I fetched it and threw out my ugly large old leftover "nowhere else to put it" lowboard. When my kids came home from school they actually gasped at the transformation of the entry hall! It looks so beautiful - the difference the right piece of furniture in the right place can make is amazing! Also, the hall seems bigger. I love it! Thank you for being such an inspiration!

It took me five years to come up with a look for my entryway. Lots of things have transpired over those years. I lost my mom, and had thoughts of scrapping the makeover to move away from near where she lived. I had huge sums embezzled from me. And I've taken on other distractions. But finally, the inspiration has come. An atrium vibe, with pops of black window frames & a black bird cage against white walls. And since the hall is narrow, only a wallpaper mural on the wall will do. It's going to be magnificent!

  • @heathervalentinemitten8024

Thank you Lisa for giving the guidelines. Grand spaces with big budgets are fun. Everything is new or perfectly refurbished in beautiful colors. I’m actually quite pleased with the nearly 9 x 12 rug I got from Home Depot (went with the Abigail Britta midnight, i think its a really beautiful pattern check it out, only thing id note is the color in person is much brighter/lighter/more turquoise than in the online photos, but I dont mind & still find it overall restful & peaceful to look at which is what I wanted. i got the 8x11 & it was only like ~$150 all total inc. As always, thanks for the inspiration. It is good to know the rules, check my elements against them. I dream of Michael Taylor entryways. I'm working with a windowless, narrow Edwardian era entry (12" wider than the rest of the hallway). There is oak flooring; a green/butter trellis runner, pale "butter" walls; a large, rustic basket tucked under a dark wood demi lune; a tall, beveled mirror with scallops and pediment and a crystal table lamp to bounce light. It all looks best when there is a full (crystal) vase of flowers on the table.

    • @lucybraun8969
      @lucybraun8969 Před 3 lety +1

@@katarinawikholm5873 Yes, I had to move my outdoor furniture off my back deck, and down into my basement for the winter. Knowing that task would be coming, I intentionally bought relatively light weight pieces, so the task was easy, and didn't take long. The outdoor umbrella I bought today could be more of a challenge to get down there, since it is so tall, so it may have to spend the winter under my covered back deck. Always good to measure before buying, but I needed the umbrella, and got a good deal on it.

Our entrance is not large and kind of opens directly to the elevator. We have a floor to ceiling mirror, as ladies like to check with a last glimpse, a Rimadesio side board with marble top "misused" as a shoe storage, a Catellani & Smith lamp and a Lepli ottoman from Poltrona Frau to sit for the shoe change. Marble, silver and a pale green palette. A thing that is very important for me and the first thing people notice is the scent. It has to smell nice when entering your home.

Thank you, Lisa! I’m a big fan of form and function; things must work as well as being beautiful! There are so many cool ideas here, and I loved the history lesson and the editing. Really fun! I’m still on the fence about the whole taking your shoes off custom. I find it very uncomfortable to walk around without some sort of footwear, and I want my guests to be comfortable. I mean, would you take off your heels if you were going to a dinner party? Or, if it was winter and you were wearing galoshes, would you bring your indoor shoes? I’ve just moved into a beautiful two bedroom apartment with a generous closet in the entry. Really looking forward to making it shine. So, I ask you, again...where to put those wet galoshes..? P.S. I vote for a September start to the Design Club. Fall always seems like a perfect time to go back to school. Really looking forward to it. 🥰

Hi. Ikea, for one, has a shoe tray for drippy/dirty shoes. I have mine tucked under my pie safe in the entryway. I'm from a culture [island] where people don't wear outdoor shoes in the house. Most people have a basket of various-sized house slippers for guests to wear in their home.

I have a wall with electrical and plumbing cupboards in my hallway, so I hid them behind a textile folk-scandi hanging by a local graphic designer (Gudrun Sjödén) and added a bright yellow stool and a big zz plant.
Kept everything else toned down or quietly matching the statement and left it at that.
(Ofc I was lucky - my hallway included a 10ft high mirrored closet and a port hole window architecturally - not much else was needed)
