    Hi everyone, if you missed the COS review mentioned in this video: czcams.com/video/j5V_Tjo7FAs/video.html
    I also added some links in the description, for you to see second-hand & new options of these garments (I pre-filtered the results based on how I would shop for myself). And now the big question: after watching this video, which trench coat would you rather put your money on?

      I bought my Burberry in DC 31 years ago for $1,500. I wear it throughout spring and fall and some days in-between. It has been cleaned countless times and no longer sheds rain quite as well, but it shows almost no signs of wear. At this rate, they'll be able to bury me in it!

    I worked with a woman who, when she graduated from University in the 1970s, received a Burberry trench coat from her father. She still wore it when she retired in 2015. It looked great. So when my daughter graduated from University in 2018, I bought her a Burberry trench coat. I am a dressmaker, and I am very happy to know that any time a button gets loose, she takes it to the store and it is repaired for free. We are both happy with the investment.

    The small inside buttons: I was taught they are not there for aesthetics. They are to prevent tear of the fabric, by spreading the pressure on the inside fabric when the outside button is yanked.

  • @tinythingy4
    @tinythingy4 Před 3 lety +213

    it is really useful to learn the reason behind why some aspects are better quality, and how they affect the garment. You cannot always find a garment where everything is impeccable so it is good to be able to judge what aspects of quality will be most important to prioritise for you. for example if an issue is mostly aesthetic or if it will make the whole thing fall apart.

    Nice video! I’m a fellow designer and just wanted to make a correction on one statement - the small buttons on the inside of the Burberry coat are not to cover the thread only. The main purpose of this button is to add stability to the front button so it doesn’t “flop”. It’s a common technique used in outerwear making (mainly) where larger and heavier buttons are used and they need to lay even against the fabric.

      I heard Queen Elizabeth loves her old Barbour jackets so much she gets them refurbished and repaired front time to time. I love the waxed jackets because they breathe and repell water. They have to be rewaxed and one needs to purchase the tin of wax. I wore one out. I have found some from LL Bean and Eddie Bauer in the US. I also have seen them in Orvis catalogs . Not as well made as Barbour.

    I really love how details these reviews are! So informative! But the prices of Burberry aren’t just cause of the finishing/COO etc. They’re more than anything a product of the status of the brand as a luxury brand. It didn’t cost Burberry 20 times the price to produce their trench coats compared to Cos but they charge 20 times more! I think Barbour is the best option as they specialise in outerwear and they’re not positioned as a luxury brand. If you don’t have access to second hand luxury brands cause not everyone does! X

      Brands across all ends of the economic spectrum do this. Search for DW fast fashion, they investigated the fast fashion industry. The most shocking thing to me was the amount of clothing H&M/Zara etc make that go directly to a land fill… brand new clothes never sold never worn… directly to the land fill.
      I don’t know what’s worse LV/ Burberry destroying old stock or H&M/ Zara doing the same???
      It’s all about controlling the market and planned obsolescence a business practice that goes back to the 1920s
      Almost every manufacturer of any product you can think of is guilty of this, from clothes computers ,cars, appliances.
      To me the biggest difference between a Burberry coat vs a H&M coat is… the chances of the Burberry coat going to a landfill post consumer purchase is exponentially lower due to perceived value.
      In fact, before I buy any “luxury” product I check the used resale market prices. By doing so I can estimate my projected loss or gain after wearing the item for a few years. Some items I have lost a little money on some items I have made really good money. What matters most is that the item didn’t go to a land fill and it’s service life continues with a new owner.

    This is really interesting and it's amazing to see where and how brands make decisions to save money or add value - still, I think more emphasis should be put on the fact that charging 2k for a trench coat isn't justified, especially as burberry now produces most of their garments overseas anyway. People pay for exclusivity and as good as the tailoring and finishing may be, I don't feel like we get any guarantees that those 2k indicate workers are being paid a living wage, factories are sustainable/carbon neutral, etc. I'd rather invest in an expensive piece that I know is producing garments fairly start to end - otherwise, tailoring aside, there isn't much of a difference between paying 200 and 2000
