Spencer V Diana: who did her better? (Kristen Stewart or Naomi Watts)

- There's a new Princess Diana film in town. Spencer (2021) attempts, like many movies before it, to depict Lady Diana's life on screen. I compare in to the 2013 Diana film to see what we've learned as a society since the last attempt.
(Obvs I would have loved to include Elizabeth Debicki's Diana in The Crown, but just like with my Emma video, I don't think it's fair to compare a TV show to a movie, when the movie has a different remit and a whole lot less time to depict a character)
NEW video I've made about Diana:
Princess Diana’s wardrobe is BORING… so I spiced it up

Hello and welcome to the SEO paragraph. Whether you're a royal enthusiast or a monarchy sceptic, Pablo Larraín's Spencer is definitely worth a watch. If you only know Kristen Stewart for her portrayal of Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, you're in for a shock. The film is set over three days at the Sandringham Estate over Christmas, and depicts her deteriorating mental health. Poldark star Jack Farthing plays Prince Charles, a little too saucy for my liking. Bring attracted to the prince of wales is unsettling.
I just love how Spencer wasn't about all the things she did or her public persona, it was about what it was actually like for her in her head, the experience of feeling trapped and having no control and what that does to a person. And it highlighted how that oppressive, regimented lifestyle, which they are basically forced into, affects someone's mental health. And how ridiculous and unnecessary it is. Robbed of a normal human experience, and for what?
Completely agree. I also love how Spencer included her flaws, like the emotional baggage she put onto her children (specifically William). A lot of people remember Diana as this angel-like figure, and whilst she was very kind, she was also human.
AMENNN!!!! THANK YOU!
Agree, it's not just another Diana's life in front of the public that we've seen thousand times already. I like how brutally honest and personal the movie was which makes it so different than other Diana movies
"incredibly embarrassed to be alive at all times" is a mood
would love to hear your thoughts about emma corrin's portrayal of princess diana in the crown!
i came here to comment this, so yes, please!
Ditto!
I think Emma’s portrayal was closer to Naomi’s portrayal than Kristen’s. She was solid but also lacked nuance & complexity
She was terrible. So over-exaggerated.
unpopular opinion but Emma's portrayal was kinda disney-ish with a dark side. Kstew did her best
so refreshing to hear defense of a kristen stewart performance after having heard arguably misogynistic takes about her acting in the vampire movie since it came out
Since this movie’s inception, I’ve heard/read nothing but complimentary comments about K. S. It seems that she’s found general acceptance and overcome her former one dimensional performances. I haven’t seen Spencer yet, but the buildup is intense and expectations are high.
@@denagustafson6070 One dimensional? Did we watch the same movies? Maybe Twilight is but it's written that way, so she delivers and IMHO does with every movie she's in. What other movies was she one dimensional in, according to you?
Honestly, from what I recall everyone in twilight including Rob Pattinson (idk how to spell his last name) got called bad actors back in the day (I blame bad directing) so I’m not sure how much of it is misogynism and how much is just that she was the face of the series. However, both Rob and Kristen are overcoming the movies and getting acknowledged as actors in their own rights. They fought for that so I’m really happy for them.
@@Melanie-jy2nw I agree with you. And both of them were quite young back then, weren't they? They've had time to grow up as actors and become more diverse in the roles they play. Plus, KS seems so much happier now that she's out. She's bolder, where beforehand she always seemed drawn in and kind of depressed. So maybe that's why she did so well as Diana.
@@brianumsteadt7690 yeah she’s really impressed me as Diana!
This review has made me want to watch Spencer more than the trailer ever could
I've just watched yesterday. I was floored - I still am
It’s so damn good!
It’s really good.
The writer of Spencer actually said that Sally Hawkin’s character was based on a real person that he spoke to anonymously - someone on Diana’s staff who was in love with her.
NO WAY. The articles I read said it was baseless, I'm gunna do some more digging cus that is fascinating!!!
leena norms it was NY Mag I believe. He said that there were a lot of people who knew Diana personally that he spoke to on the condition of anonymity. Also said that some of the most unbelievable parts of the movie were actually true.
Shady Queens what? I literally said the source. Why are you mad? And she clearly was not joking. You’re weird.
@Shady Queens I thought the film was pretty clear, I thought that was a sincere confession of love from someone who knew that nothing was going to come from it.
Im not sure what you background is, so correct me if you have a different informed perspective. But as an adult gay woman, I have had experiences very much like that. Telling someone you are in love with them after accepting that you will only ever be close friends.
It felt extremely realistic
I had no idea about the lack of maternal rights over children. As a mother I find that chilling (although of course you don’t have to be a mother to empathise). What a difficult decision for her to make to divorce him anyway
And its not true, Diana travelled abroad on Holiday to flirt with Dodi, with BOTH her sons with her
the diana and anne boleyn bit tho i -
There’s at least one scene between Diana and Anne Boleyn where it’s clear that Kristen is also playing Anne and that gave me literal chills
I didnt realize til now Kristen was also playing Boleyn. Wow, mind blown.
@@erikdaniels0n Kristen doesn’t play Anne in most scenes. I saw it a while ago, but IIRC, there’s a scene where Kristen is imagining herself dressed as Anne in a vision/daydream, but the other scenes with Anne as a ghost are a different actress.
Anne Boleyn's erasure was so near complete that historians debate whether it's her in the famous portrait. Henry ordered them all destroyed after her death, and it's unlikely anyone of the status to own a large portrait of her would have been able to keep it hidden.
Some historians think it was a memorial painting of Henry's younger sister Mary after her death, and the "B" necklace was a reference to her husband Charles Brandon. The only non-contested portrait of Anne Boleyn is her image on a coin, where you can tell that she had a face but little else.
There's a chapter in Gareth Russell's biography of Catherine Howard (Henry VIII's 5th wife) that talks about the erasure of her portraits and it is fascinating. The book is called Young and Damned and Fair and I highly recommend it!
so many people who never even saw Spencer like months before it ever even came out attacked Kristen Stewart and called her a terrible actress. she’s fantastic. people are just sexist and hate that she was in twilight because “that’s for teenage girls ew”
THIS! Also how Robert Pattinson has never received anywhere near the level of hate & hypercriticism she has. It’s just misogyny.
well some ppl hate Kristen because of twilight movies and they think she is not a good actress, she has no expression and bla bla bla. and also because she cheated her ex bf. the movie hasn't been watched a lot due to this hatred and the royal family hasn't seen it either. I know that Kristen has won many prizes and has been nominated very often, but the movie has not "hit the box office". and among the rejected prizes there was the SAG, where everyone expected her candidature. The Oscar was not won because, however, people always find something wrong, some I know that they have not seen the film, others because of her homosexuality, some because they do not consider her a good actress. some believe her best performance was not kristen's but emma's. there are two distinctions to make: the movie where she plays kristen is different, it doesn't talk about Diana's whole life and kristen has revealed that she saw "the crown" where she plays emma. spencer talks about diana in another version.kristen was very good in the english accent, the one in my opinion was awarded in the oscars. I don't judge the rest because I'm not someone who works in the cinema industry.
Love the video. As a side note: I wonder how much we would know about Anne Boleyn if her daughter, Elizabeth, didn't wind up being Queen, and an amazing, iconic Queen, that people are were and are fascinated by. It is really hard to erase a person from history if their child becomes, arguably, one of the most well-known historical figures.
I've watched the Tudors a few times. Anne Boleyn's success in capturing the attention of the King was her downfall. It was a terrible time to be a woman. They were all used for their family's success. Nothing but a pawn.
She was beheaded but her bloodline continued to rule until today. Ironically
Leena your thoughts just blew my third eye totally open - talking about the historical henry/anne relationship just also made me think about the inherent horror story that is a woman entering into her husband's family and leaving her own behind in a symbolic but real way, and how even divorce doesnt save you, giving the family what they want (heir and spare) doesnt save you, nothing can save you. And then the added dimension of royalty and thinking that the people at the top of the ladder of course have the social power and position to escape, but as you discussed are still people and can't.....made me tear up!!
She's now officially an Academy Award Nominee thanks to her fantastic performance in this movie. God bless The Academy for playing fair on her 🙌🙌🙌
I never thought about Kristin Stewart’s parallel with the press before this but it makes so much sense once you pointed it out. I’m much more interested to see the 2021 version than I was previously, so thank you for all the insights.
its why i always thought she was a good choice for the role. she understands what the constant judgement & hypercriticism & misogyny from a young age is like
I’m glad you brought up the almost gothic horror elements of Spencer. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Spencer aside from it likely being an introspective character study, like Jackie, but I wasn’t expecting a psychological thriller meets gothic horror, almost ghost story vibes. Like the scenes of Diana walking around her childhood home are clearly shot like something out of a haunted house movie, and I loved that about it. The Anne Boleyn stuff in particular really reminded me of Portrait of A Lady On Fire, which this film shares a cinematographer with. I also think the fact that it never claims to be based on real events, branding itself as “a fable from a true tragedy”, also allows them to get away with stuff like that. I REALLY loved Spencer because it really challenges and subverts your expectations of what a movie like this will be like
i think it's worth remembering that anne boleyn was, herself, a replacement. she actively pursued being queen even while catherine of aragon was still very much henry's wife, and did everything she could to get rid of catherine. later she was very cruel to catherine's daughter mary. of course she was simply doing what she'd been taught - trying to further her family's political power - but i think it adds an interesting extra layer to that idea about cycles of royal women and history repeating itself.
I wish they'd just let her rest in peace. It's ridiculous, her kids have been trying to get on w their lives for 24 years, while the media continuously bring her up to analyse and use as some bizarre symbol for whatever political agenda they have
Edit: it's the newspapers, like the daily mail, who use her without acknowledging her actual politics (ie hiv/aids), things like that fucking musical! It sounds like Spencer is about the only piece of media about Diana that respects the fact that she was a real person
The media is only interested because the general public is
The crown was respectful.
Roosa Heikkinen by being pro-royalist?
My thoughts in terms of portrayals of eating disorders and glamorizing them - as long as it is shown in the context of it being a disorder that is being struggled with, I'm on board. All mental health disorders thrive on on thing: silence. If we don't talk about them, they can grow and overtake us. But when we see people struggling with the same thing we are struggling with, that silence is broken for a moment. Once it is something we see being talked about, we can feel brave enough to share our struggles and get support. To me, the argument that it shouldn't be portrayed at all implies viewers are so simple that if a beautiful person does *anything*, it's glamorous. I certainly don't believe that is the case.
Especially since it's clear throughout "Spencer" that Diana is absolutely miserable, and she was miserable in the ED scenes as well. It would be glamorizing EDs if she did her thing and then walked off like everything was 100 percent fine as if having an ED is easy and pretty instead of it's mentally debilitating truth.
I'm not sure that showing misery is enough to say it's not glamourising - the misery itself can be part of it. There's an argument to be made for a social component of mental illness, or rather a way that these portrayals can influence how misery and pain can be expressed in behaviors. We know that before self-harm (or more specifically, cutting) was widely discussed, there were less instances of self harm. Not none, but a teen in deep mental distress wouldn't have thought of it as a coping mechanism as readily if they'd never heard of it before. We know there's also contagion when it comes to suicide when a suicide is heavily covered by the press. I'm not saying media depictions cause the underlying distress, but I think it can influence how it's expressed. I think there's a component for that in ED's too. ED's have been around a looong time, and I think there are biological and psychological causes to it that run very deep, but a teen who's miserable might see someone they admire who's also miserable, and think that the behaviors that person uses would be a good way for them, too, to embody their pain. And if they happen to also have the other risk factors and predispositions, well... I haven't seen Spencer, so I can't speak to that specifically, but I just wanted to comment that there'sa difference between silence about a topic and depicting a type of behavior in media, and it's a hard balance to find!
Even Diana didn't know at first what bulimia is and thought that she was the only person going through something like that! (If I remember correctly from the incredible 5-part series about Diana on the podcast "You're Wrong About")
I was so surprised by how much I loved Spencer, especially considering that I really try to not interact with media involving the royals, because it makes me too angry (especially as an Irish woman lol) and also, selfishly, I don't really want to feel sympathy for them. Diana is different, obviously, and I was excited for Kristen Stewart's portrayal. The movie was SO my sort of thing, I can't explain it. I've already seen it twice. Loved it and loved this video too!!!
One of my earliest memories is going to London with my mum and sister to lay some flowers for Diana after she died. I remember being SO confused about why there were so many flowers piled high on the streets as far as the eye could see.
Totally agree. Kristen Stewart is such an underrated actor and The Crown was my eye opener on the inner workings of the Royale family, as a British, I Am disappointed by their archaic and nonsensical behavior. Great review.
I suggest The Crown if you'd like an even deeper look, of course somethings are dramatized and can only be speculated on but its still a good idea as to what their lives are like and the archaic rules they obey
Most of it is finction that integrates real life people and broad strokes of national events
I couldn't agree more regarding the Royal Family, I wish no ill will on the individuals themselves, but I abhor the entire outdated construct which is an anathema to the human story, that one person's blood is of greater value and status than that of another. My thanks to such a refreshing reviewer, mixing insightful analysis with broader context, and delivered in a warm and personable style. As a film buff, I will definitely be seeking out more of her videos.
Just love your work. You are incredible, intelligent and insightful.
I’m not a fan of the monarchy but I think there are a lot of fascinating facets of it, so I really like seeing critical explorations of it in media! “Young Royals” handled that really well, like it sounds “Spencer” did too.
Young Royals was great! So glad we're getting a second season.
I paused the video, bought tickets for Spencer and will be returning tomorrow to watch the rest 😂
I loved Spencer, I've seen it twice now (and I'm definitely gonna be watching it again when Christmas rolls around)! I already thought it was a brilliant and gorgeous film, but you going into the deeper connections/history with Anne Boleyn really made me appreciate the film more. The crew working on Spencer clearly did their homework! This was a super insightful video, nice job!
I was completely blown away by Spencer. Five minutes in, I forgot I was watching Kristen Stewart. I know a lot of people give her crap, but she is a fantastic actress and you can tell she takes her craft seriously.
I think, by hinting at a Diana as a femme fatale character, filmmakers, wrongly, attempt to justify her death to the audience. As fatality is built into that concept, which is insulting to our intelligence and I assume her legacy.
wow, the parallels to anne boleyn are fascinating and something i haven't previously thought about. thank you for explaining this so well!
I thought *Emma Corrin* did a truly spectacular job, playing *Lady Diana Spencer* in season 4 of _'The Crown',_ and it'll be interesting to see how *Elizabeth Debicki* does in the role during seasons 5 & 6!
I cannot wait to see _'Spencer'!_ 🥰❤️
girl, you are amazing!! I loved every second of this well done review. Lots of really clever insights, fast paced, funny lines, great GREAT research. greetings from Rio
This video was very engaging. I absolutely love history. Thanks for making it and I hope you make more history related topics. Have a nice day!
Loved your take on two films! Can't wait to see Spencer!!!
OMG, Leena....you're brilliant, authentic, unique, insightful, entertaining, and original. So glad to have found your channel.
Aw thanks Paula!
Such a lovely and thorough breakdown of both of these films! So interesting!
You touched on the heart surgeon that was not amused by the 2013 film and Harry who apparently watches The Crown. I'm curious about your ideas on the ethics of making works of fiction that involve / directly affect people who are still alive. Especially if/how those ethics change when public figureheads or the monarchy is involved.
Leena's videos are so well prepared and well edited (and she is so articulate and witty) that I feel like I am watching a Channel 4 TV series every time I come to this channel. Love her.
I also loved the You're Wrong About episodes on Diana. Absolutely harrowing.
I wasn’t going to watch “Spencer” but now I cannot wait to! Your brilliant dissection of these elements shows for me how these films are a product of their time. And I feel that there is such a thing as a “The Crown” effect on biopics where there use historical fiction to highlight a point of view that is clearly subjective -and doesn’t pretend to be accurate truth- but compels viewers to think differently about the privileged and powerful while making it priority to critique and entertain, as works fiction should.
I didn’t know I needed this video, but apparently I did, incredible!
I haven't watched neither but i will watch "Spencer" now! Thanks for the analysis! What is surprising is that many people are fascinated with the British royal family. They have a good marketing team i suppose! I didn't know that Boleyn's sister was the great great grandmother of Diana! This fact blew me away!
Totally agree with what you’ve said - I loved the comparison Diana makes in Spencer to the camera lenses as microscopes and her an insect and that while Anne so graciously gave her head, she wouldn’t go down so easily. I thought Spencer gave us a look at an incredibly complex woman who had flaws and weaknesses just as anyone else. Such a beautifully made film.
Love the points about the casting of Kristin Stewart! Great video
This was such a BANGER of a vid, Leena. Wow.
Both women did amazing! I watched both 'Crowns' and there were times where each of them really resembled Princess Diana in so many ways.. I loved watching them both tbh
Ooooh after the next season of the crown comes out, you should do a version of this talking about The Crown’s portrayal
This was a fantastic review and vs !!!
I am American and I have very little interest in the royal family but after watching this I am going to be watching this movie. I do love Kristen Stewart but as always your videos opened my eyes to something I didn't know I cared about.
Amazing video and amazing discussion 💜
This was a good look at both films and informative about Diana
“She’s related to Anne Boleyn, which tells you more about that circle of people than the accent ever could.” 😂😂
We need #Dianacore outfits from Leena next?! Loved this video x
YES!!! 😍😍😍
seriously enjoyed your take on this!
Thank you for explaining the relationship with Anne Boleyn! That information is Gold to understand the scene.
I saw Spencer yesterday and I have been utterly shattered ever since. So heartbreaking.
i watched spencer a couple days ago and was completely blown away by how brilliant it was. the only thing that really frustrated me was the pearls - pearls like that would have knot between each pearl so *those* scenes were unrealistic in an annoying way
That got to me too! And the fact it’s bright daylight at 5pm/6pm on Christmas Day in the UK. It’s dark at like 3.30 in winter
22:46 - finding out there is a reference to Anne Boleyn in Spencer just sent chills throughout my whole body and is making me so uneasy because, know why it's there; it makes sense and that's terrifyingly done. As was said here, "dark".
I thought I was ready to see this movie but that is so unsettling and poingnent I might need some more time to brace myself.
update, Just say the film and holy shit they actually did it and it fucking WORKED. no words
oh, just another fantastic video from Leena
Really appreciating your thoughts on this, Leena!
Oh wow i had the same experience with Diana.... Watching her funeral and seeing my mum cry shook me. It made me so interested in Diana from so young because i wondered why so many people loved her. I think i was 8 when she passed. ❤️
This was great but you know we're gonna need your take on the Diana musical next :D
Spencer might be my personal top film of 2021 and one of the most effective pieces of art i've ever experienced, but i just want to tell you that i think your crown is so cool
“Wash-cycle of humanity” brilliant! 🙌🏼
I love these types of videos the one you did about the Emma's films loved it , i havent watched any of the films yet but i definitly wanna watch Spencer , even in Argentina we love Diana, i have always been very curious about her.
I really enjoyed your brilliant commentary on Spencer! I had to watch it 3 times before I got it and will watch it many more times. thought it a wonderful work of art. reminded me of the warfare time my mother fought to be rid of the heavy male apparatus in her life. So glad she fought. maybe that's why we loved Diana so much she was her genuine self and we knew how that mean kind of systemic put down worked. You are brilliant I wish you well! thanks
I can’t wait to watch this film when it’s released in South Africa 💃🏻 Thanks for a great review 🧚🏻♀️
I wasn’t going to watch Spencer, now I will. Thanks Lena. 👍🏻
Your analyses are so brilliant, Leena, thank you!!
The Hollywood Reporter just released a roundtable interview including Kristen Stewart and she addresses some of these parallels you mentioned!! Worth a watch 💛
You look like a beautiful mermaid in your lovely blue dress. Great video Leena! 💙
So refreshing to hear someone criticising the institution of the Royals rather than the individuals born within it. I wish you had gone further to explain who you think they exist for
"anti royalist, pro royals" is a great mindset and I will be stealing that if someone asks me on the matter!!!
elaborate please?
Reminds me of how I’m anti-war, but pro-troops.
@@okikiosk referring to the quote at 30:49
I absolutely love Kristen…. So now that I’ve put that out there… lady, you did a freaking fantastic job at this review. Thank you.
Omg I saw the "P. O. W." Tag on her clothing in the movie and initially mistook it for the acronym for Prisoner of War as opposed to the Princess of Wales and it just fit so well to the themes of the movie
Hi Leena ! I watch your videos with subtitles and I sometimes miss some of the titles when they are on the bottom of the screen. Could you put them higher so my little french brain can understand everything ? 😂 By the way, I liked this video ! Have a nice day ❤️
Surtitles ?
can we have a part 2? - same categories on Diana the musical in netlfix....
also i still think its too recent to be making any media on her maybe in 100 years but it seems so unfair to the boys.
I was just wondering if you would highlight the anne boleyn insertion cause it was like one of my favorite things in the movie and
then you started speaking of it thanks for that 😭❤️
Faaaaaantastic review!!!
Just found out Spencer isn't available in Australia until end of January and I am livid
This is a work of art
I loved Spencer so much. I think I might see it again this weekend lol
Great analysis!
You've made me want to watch the film even as someone not particularly interested in Diana. A good bit of writing on female royals is Hilary mantel's essay Royal Bodies from Anne Boleyn to Kate Middleton
You are brilliant at this!
Fiction is often the best way to tell truths.
I really didn’t like Spencer so it’s interesting to hear your take on it. I think definitely what this has shown me is that this film is for people who know and care about Diana and more broadly, the royal family.
I’m very anti-royal (but very pro Kristen Stewart, which is why I watched the film in the first place) and so I think that definitely didn’t help, because the film firmly throws you in the deep end and doesn’t give you any history.
I would recommend if you’re going to watch the film but know nothing (like I do) to read up a bit beforehand and I hope you enjoy it more than I did
Same, can't stand the royals, the film was boring af for me, but wonderful acting from the whole cast.
Great video!
Kristen Stewart is the best Diana...Even Diana's real bodyguard said this. She deserves the Oscar
It’s not out here yet, but I can’t wait to see the new film 🙈
Pfft..it is just undoubetedly Spencer. An absolute masterpiece.
This channel keeps me going
Brilliant video! Now I have to watch Spencer. For some reason, I expected Kristen Stewart to be great in this role
Great video
While I get the film was very much about what was going on inside Diana's head and understand that it's hard to examine someone's life and motivations when they lived hundreds of years ago, I had complicated feelings about the Anne Boleyn comparisons mainly because, in her day, Anne's public perception was far closer to Camilla's than Diana's. She was seen as the woman who broke up the marriage of Catherine of Aragon, who was publicly adored and still considered the "true" queen by many even after Anne's marriage. While Anne is legendary for both her role in creating the Church of England and her daughter, she definitely did not have the public image and support that Diana did at the time their marriages began to unravel.
Spencer was excellent. I really wanted to see how they handled the narrative after listen to You’re Wrong About series on Diana. I thought they did a very good job showing the mental turmoil of living a life micromanaged of everyday things and consistently being gaslit about your feeling as if they’re invalid
I wouldn’t describe Kristen as a particularly gifted actress in the technical sense, but in all her roles she has always had a way of making me root for her. Which I think is what was so brilliant about Spencer. You wanted her to get out of there with her boys, you wanted her to win and go and love a happy long life. I think like you said, that captures the image and desire so many had of/for Diana herself.
this is actually a very funny take considering that one of the things every director consistently says about her is that she's a brilliant technical actress. i'm not sure you know what technical acting means?
@@AB-qb4eh lmao being that I study acting for over a decade I know what “technical” means in regard to acting. Directors can have their own opinions and tastes but to me, she doesn’t do strong character work or make strong choices. She doesn’t really commit to actions or lines. There’s a sense of hesitation. I’m not saying she’s a bad actress but compared to someone like Florence Pugh she is definitely lacking in the technical department.
@@SmartStart24 LMFAOOOO post that imdb page!! i’m trying to see the decade of acting study that would lead you to dismiss more accomplished people as inferior 💀 badly want to see what your “commitment to actions and lines” looks like
I cant believe that was Christian Stewart!!! Shes such a good actress i didnt even notice it was her! Incredible performance
Highly recommend Tara Mooknee's video on the Harry and Megan situation, she also talks about Diana a lot and it's phenomenal
great writeup, i would also love to hear about the crown.
Regarding Diana's accent, she was a Sloane (aka 'Sloane Ranger'). They have a very specific way of speech not so simple as just RP.
