Mamma Mia! was never supposed to be “serious” or “intellectual” - it’s a musical/film to bring happiness and silliness for a couple of hours. Like life, happiness and silliness are needed every so often. Accept it for what it is and love it. It’s harmless fun.

My auntie was an ABBA mega fan in the 80s, so when this film came out, she and her best friend came dressed up as hippies to pick me up from school, and we went to go and see it. I was too young to find them embarrassing and thought it was hilarious. I laughed through the whole film too and looking back now, I'm glad I got to see a film about so many independent, great women with two of the most amazing, independent women in my life:)) so no, I will not tolerate any Mamma Mia slander either.

The rule of three acts with the 3 fathers, all the action occurring in one day on a remote island and centring/ending with a wedding (even in not the conventional way you'd expect!). I would rather go for a big cheese burger or watch some boxing then friggin get my nails polished. It's juts a stereotype that all gay men are girly and weak, my first boyfriend is a soldier in the British army and has served in Afghanistan too, one of my best friends who is gay like practicing cage fighting and so does his boyfriend. I actually teared up a bit at this video and I'm not entirely sure why, except that until you'd pointed it out I hadn't really realised how nice it is to see women like my mum, middle aged, single, silly and funny and loud, usually wearing dungarees, on screen. Men have been allowed to be middle aged and still behave "badly" for eons, its nice to see older women not suffering for once.

Leena Leena LEENA. I've spent the last eleven years defending this film and now, finally, someone has my back! I've seen negative criticism about Mamma Mia that is fair. The color grading is A Bit Much, the act 1 finale IS three consecutive musical numbers that don't further the plot, Pierce Brosnan really cannot sing. BUT I don't care!!! It is more than the sum of its parts and I will love it until I die.
I will also say that the sequel is also good fun and a great viewing experience--especially if you look at it more as a companion piece than as a sequel (which is easy to do since the plot does not line up with what we learn in the first movie). Lily James is a star and the young dads are hot and Waterloo is one of the best musical numbers ever on film.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have to go send it to all my friends now.

lol literally taught myself to sail the summer after Mamma Mia 2 came out because i fancied Young Bill and felt single and unhealed from a breakup after a very long term but very high school relationship and then came second at women's Nationals that same year. now i have an incredible and platonic male helm and we have a boat mixtape that we sing together of ABBA songs on the water because it turns out what I was yearning for when I binged both Mamma Mias was not a love interest but after a need to explore and love myself because god knows why i felt like a burnt out spinster at 19 lol. showing middle aged women having fun on screen is radical not only for middle aged women, but like, women everywhere who are conditioned to fear the spinster times as a fate worse than death. but like, if my middle aged times look literally ANYTHING like Mamma Mia I am signing up for that hello

The first Christmas after my dad died my family wasn't in the mood to watch a super christmasy movie so we randomly watched Mamma Mia which thus began a weird family tradition of watching it and singing to ABBA every Christmas which we have for the last 7 years. This movie genuinely filled our home with so much joy when we were in a place of so much pain. As a digital nomad I actually went through an experience that felt very similar to Donna's but also feel like in all of the characters, old and young, I can see a piece of who I am or who I inspire to be - and I think that's what's beautiful about this hilariously cheesy film. You're right, it is a film about women just living life and giving in to the joys life and true friendship brings. Thanks for making this video! And heck ya watch Mamma Mia 2 it is equally wonderful in it's own right!

i was also very scared to watch MM2 but it was such a blast. Might I say, even better?? It was definitely better ito cinematography but the 'younger' versions of the cast was also brilliant. There was a few details that were changed, but overall one of my favourite cinema experiences! the music were brilliant *chef's kiss*, and the visual gags didn't fall flat. Basically, I love both films and acknowledge that I have a HUGE nostalgia bias towards the first one (I was 10 when it came out & instantly became my favourite film) but also acknowledge that the 2nd film expands the mother-daughter dynamic in a different way (no spoilers!!)

As someone who loves mammia mia with an aggressive level of feeling, thankyou for this video!!! Female centered movies are so rarely considered "great movies" whether they be serious stories or light-hearted comedies, because they either get written off as girly or the concerns aren't those of men so they aren't taken to heart for some reason.... anyway, i love watching video essays about good movies when that includes a female narrative! (another channel that does this is a channel called moderngurlz, its very bubblegum pink so easy to underestimate, but i would really reccommend looking through a few of their video essays which put beautiful chinese foreign films in the same breath as hepburn movies and the same breath as typically "great" movies, and its great to see movies on a level playing field.) ..............anyway, really appreciated this video as always, but i just want to let you know, please, please, dont watch mammia mia 2. it is so nearly a good film but they just went completely wrong with it, i am not a fan.

nearly a year ago i was travelling, and on my flight to the netherlands (and to sweden afterwards) i rewatched the film and i swear, it reasonated with me in another level. i saw myself in young donna, a girl who just wanted to escape and find herself by going through all these crazy adventures and that's pretty much what i aim for in life. i really wish they didn't take off the scene where she and rosie & tanya sing i wonder (departure) before she leaves for paris, that said so much of her character then.

I particularly felt like this about the sequel, I swung wildly between wanting to leave and sobbing my heart out. In the end I stayed and sobbed my heart out, and recommended it to everyone I knew. These movies are wild.

This made me a little emotional watching. Such a great analysis, too damn true!
When my half sister was born (when I was 14) she quickly became obsessed with the film as a toddler (and still is 15 years later) - she would copy the outfit changes and would even “dive” off a piece of furniture into a “sea” of pillows just as the actress does 🤣 Needless to say she/we watched it so many time the dvd got damaged.
It’s definitely our families film 🤣

Also, Mamma Mia 2 is a medium level film. Watch it with no expectations other than "that was nice". I treat it like a spin off rather than a legit sequel. It annoyed me that there were some inconsistencies in the storyline that's established in the first film. BUT! It's still a Mamma Mia film, so obviously I am here for it.

I grew up watching and loving Mamma Mia, so watching Mamma Mia 2 was one of the greatest theatre experiences in my life. It’s just as silly, nonsensical and fun as the first one and it even still has its super sincere and tearful moments. I firmly believe that súper trouper being sung by Cher and the cast from both films side to side is the greatest movie credit sequences of all time. It also helps that I watched it with friends who loved the first one just as much and would sunny along to every song (because it reprises tons of songs from the first)

mamma mia was my grandfather's most favourite movie. the music, the characters and the storyline, his favourite. he had the brightest laugh and smile i had ever come across. he had a smoking addiction, and then found the strength to stop when his lungs almost collapsed 20 years ago. his youngest brother died when he was 27, his two siblings passed away in february 2019 and his wife had a heart attack (but thankfully survived) in that same month. whenever i travelled to see him again, he was always so warm, and was my no 1 supporter. he loved me for me, and was always there for me. i was never upset around him because with one smile he could lift my mood. until november 2019, when he had a stroke and collapsed, passing away almost immediately whilst playing his favourite sport, golf. whenever i watch mamma mia now, it reminds me of my friendship with my grandfather and how amazing he was. whenever i watch the first movie, i feel his energy right beside me. it's as if he's watching it with me. this movie on so many different levels is amazing, heartfelt, positive and nostalgic. not only was it the first musical i had ever watched and fallen in love with, but mamma mia is my favourite franchise of all time.

I've been so lucky to see the stage show and it is hands down one of my favourites. My brother was with me and he was also in full swing of things.
I've seen both film versions countless times, including at the cinema with my mum who has an aversion to anything like that. I grew up listening to ABBA as they're a favourite of my mother's which she's passed down to us.
It never fails to cheer me up, just having it on in the background etc. My heart becomes full when I can sing badly out of tune to ABBA cos no one really gives to much of a sh*t. It's such a feel good thing.
I do love the story of you being adopted by older mildly drunk ladies. Shows that musicals really do help people.
The last time I seen a show was The Lion King just before lockdown. I'll always recommend that to anyone too, and Kinky Boots which also fulfills my heart 💛

i stopped everything to watch this! i think the thing i agree with most is how much JOY there is in this movie, and how much of a delight it is to watch. in my experience when i talk about mamma mia with someone, it's almost like they're ashamed to say they enjoyed it. it's like they think they need to talk down about this movie, but when i exclaim my own enthusiasm for it they're more open to say that actually yeah they had fun watching it too. and it's a shame because we shouldn't need permission from others to enjoy things.
ANYWAY, i don't know if the sequel stands up to a similar analysis, but i do think lily james did a wonderful job capturing donna's charisma. and there's also a mother/daughter scene that's just perfect.

  • @alexadanielahernandez3476

My grandma, my mom, my cousins and I watched it for the first time when I was like 6. And we all INSTANTLY fell in love with it. Years later when I was like 10 when the show came to our city at the Plaza theatre. My grandma took me and my cousins to watch it. And when the sequel came out my mom and abuela picked us up from school to go watch it together. My grandma only speaks Spanish, but this was her favorite movie in English. In November my grandma passed away. I’m 18 now and it’s been very hard. But we still honor her memory by listening to ABBA and watching the movie every chance we get. So to whoever bashes this movie, I feel sorry for you for not enjoying and understanding the story and listening closely to the music that brings it all together, you’re missing something great.

I love Momma Mia, both 1&2.
I think along side all the points you made, the point of Momma Mia is that inside most of us is a 17 year old that just wants to have fun and not take life so seriously all the time.
I feel as though the people who don't enjoy this film lost touch with their inner-17 year old. That, or maybe they hate musicals; which "is why they are singing all the time."
I personally find the sudden bursts of unexpected singing part of the fun. And, why wouldn't you have a feather boa at a hotel !

Hi Leena, I just watched the movie and I know I had to watch this video of yours to express how glad I am that you made this video. In the scene where Donna, Rosie and Tanya sang Dancing Queen, ngl at first I felt uncomfortable, like "they’re women yet act so silly". But then I snapped at myself, the only reason I ever felt that way was due to what patriarchal society injected in me. And I noticed that whenever the trio passed by when singing the song, women and young ladies followed them and danced gracefully and joyously, which made me burst into tears, for real. I got so emotional seeing how womanhood, or like you said anti age-shaming, was embraced throughout the movie. Anyway, I enjoyed this video a lot as well as learning a few more stuff : ) Once again, thanks Leena!
