From a Tent to a Home: No Longer Homeless

  • Rachel could have never imagined she'd end up without a home. However, that's been her reality for more than a decade, living in a tent on the bustling streets of San Diego-until now! This video takes you on Rachel’s journey from her makeshift tent to her very own apartment. Finally, Rachel has a place to call home!
It's heartbreaking to see that as the homelessness crisis is expanding, many politicians are focusing more on punishing homeless people out of sight instead of providing the essential support they desperately need. And sadly, San Diego is a prime example of a city that's pretty harsh on homeless folks. They seem more interested in penalizing them instead of giving them a helping hand, which hurts us all.
Homelessness is getting worse, and instead of creating helpful solutions, some are pulling back support for housing-the very thing that can genuinely solve homelessness! Housing not only gives people like Rachel a new lease on life but it's also a much more humane and effective solution than just moving people around or throwing them in jail. And, believe it or not, it actually saves taxpayer money in the long run!
San Diego's approach to dealing with homelessness is doing more harm than good, making the situation worse for those struggling to survive on the streets. It seems there’s a lack of understanding that secure housing is a game-changer-it can really turn someone’s life around, getting them off the streets permanently. Rachel’s story is living proof that giving people a stable place to live is the real solution to homelessness.
In a nutshell, the rise in homelessness calls for compassion and real, lasting solutions, like more housing options, not just condemning those who are struggling. Let's look at Rachel's new beginning and see it as a beacon of hope and a testament to what's possible when we address homelessness with kindness, understanding, and actual help instead of punishment.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Exactly right,Shaun !! Many renters and homeowners trying not to be foreclosed on live in absolute terror over becoming homeless. They know enough from the news stories how hellish that life is, but because of not understanding how market rate rents driven by the permanent housing shortage can make one homeless, even though they'd never choose that situation on their own. It's all about stereotypes. Only drunks, or druggies, crazy people ever wind up homeless. People are either taught this, or don't know about the rental issues over finding an apartment you can afford. And apartments are often sold out beneath you, or converted to condos- goodby nice, safe apartment and hello( oh no!) homelessness !

      @shaunhall960 Před 8 měsíci +3

@@JulieSevelson-nb9nj Not to mention that when people are struggling to stay afloat they often turn to drinking or drugs which adds to the slippery path of homelessness. Depression plays a huge part in your life and if you can't deal with it it only gets worse. This is why we need a health care system that works so people can get the help they need before things get worse for them. As is always the case it cost less to deal with someone who can get the help than a person in crisis which has a bigger cost to our society both financially as well as spiritually.

In Australia right now we a facing a housing crisis where more and more are becoming homeless and as supply can't meet demand the greedy landlords are jacking up the rental prices pushing people further and further into poverty and some out onto the streets. Rachel is right, supply has to meet demand, or we will just continue with this horrible cycle of homelessness and will keep getting worse. I'm scared for our future, my future, and people lucky enough to have place to rent are forced to put up with substandard unhealthy/unsafe conditions because the landlords know they can get away with it because no one wants to be homeless!!

@@angelaburress8586That's bigotry and stereotyping on your part ! Seniors are the fastest growing demographic for becoming homeless. Did you know that ? In Pasadena, a few years ago, an apartment complex for seniors that had been there on Colorado Blvd.was taken over by a foreign company that was Chinese- Indonesian, and they threw out all those long- time tenants, and destroyed their lives, caused many deaths. This was recounted in the Pasadena Weekly. Hotel Dusit, the boutique hotel is called now. Each time housing stock is removed, this happens. Because we have a permanent housing shortage. Normal countries don't have large populations of homeless citizens. Period.

@@laurat1129Angela is probably one of those conservatives who believes, and wants to- that homelessness is only a moral failure, and not an economic failure as well. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to homeless Americans. By the way, it's frightening to see that in all the English speaking countries, the exact same thing is going on, and with the same responses ,too ! I was shocked to hear Australia as well, had that policy of ignoring homeless people. Britain under Thatcher also became Neoliberal, and with that came job loss and homelessness.

I resonate with this so much I love my little apartment so much and it's so clean and tidy. I was homeless for yrs awhile back and trauma from the streets being homeless is a real thing. The longer someone stays out there the more trauma you add. But she's a great example of there needs to be more advocating for the homeless. Media only shows the addicted homeless person who boosts to make a living.

She is so lucky. I've been waiting for an apartment for me, my husband, and our almost 3 year old disabled baby since before she was born. We are in an apartment now but its almost too small for 1 person let alone 3. Her kitchen if you make it a rectangle is pretty much what we have. I have to ask who farted for logistical reasons. We cant fit a tv. That might be a good thing. We also all sleep in the "livingroom" which is the room thats everything except the kitchen and bathroom. Theres 2 doors. One is the bathroom door the other is the outside door. I would give my left arm for an apartment with space like that for my baby to move around in. The more she moves the better for her disability. Sorry for the rant. I'm grateful my little family has a roof over our heads. I'm happy for this woman and hope she really loves her new place for as long as shes there. Blessings to her and her family.

I'm in your same situation, except I'm 67. Idk if this helps any, but i found a way to buy a home thru a rent to own company. I've made payments for 5 years; in another 5 years, I'll own my house, free and clear. They sell them "as is", need a ton of work... but I was able to buy an approx 900 sq ft cabin, with an acre of land, for just $17,000. (I'm in MO.) It's been tough, living for 5 years with only a toilet, kitchen sink, and cold water (which I heat on my cookstove for bathing), while gradually buying the tub, shower, etc, but it's been worth it to me. It's an option you may want to check into.

High rents and inflation is causing homelessness. I’m a senior, living in apt for 45 years. New landlord, bought the unregulated multi dwelling apartment at inflated market price.. understandably raised tenant rents to market rate. I agreed to pay rent increase. Then landlord changed mind and terminated all our leases. I’m a holdover and going to face court this week, hopefully the judge will give me enough time to look for a job then find a new apt.. which both are difficult in this competitive high price market. landlord wants me evicted, so he can convert a one bedroom apt to a 4 bedroom apt to more rental money from individuals .. like a rooming board house. He already started doing major renovations in upstairs apt. But he’s not going to tell judge that. So now I have to give up retirement and look for full time employment at age 70 to have income to pay the high rent for an apartment… or else end up homeless in NYC.
The current illegal migrants in NYC are getting getting housing first…last week many American disabled veterans were displaced from their long term senior home to house the illegal migrants. They literally kicked out a 94 yr old disabled vet. 🤦🏽‍♀️
