Great video. It should be mandatory viewing for all new PB players to help them make the correct choice for their game
Yeah, this one was a bit more basic information wise but there are a lot of players who need it.
Great content. Awesome recommendations. Keep up the great work 🎉
Thank you!
Got the paddle with your code. Thanks so much 🙏 for your advice. I cannot wait for it to arrive .
Nice! Thanks for using my code and I’m glad I could help :)
Thanks for the explanation! Great video
Glad it was helpful!
Great explanation of paddle shapes and their different characteristics.
Thank you!
Crazy how half an inch here and there makes suchhhh a difference. I always thought standard and hybrid paddles were synonymous and wide bodies were the true standard.
I have always been an elongated guy but the Hybrid shape has really grown on me once adjusting to that slightly lower sweet spot
I think a lot of people start with an elongated shape because that seems to be the norm but there are a lot of benefits to the hybrid shape that would fit the needs better for a lot of rec players.
The hybrid paddles seem to have the best and most consistent sweet spots of any of the other shapes, with the exception being the "wide body" paddles.
I agree, for the majority of players I think the hybrid or standard is going to be the right fit.
Super report. Wondering how paddle thickness influences the attributes in your report? TIA.
I did a video on that topic too a few months ago. You can check it out here, czcams.com/video/XulVnhzpTF4/video.htmlsi=1vaZbs5M1TT2Fgwm.
@@pickleballeffect Thx! I had watched it but wanted to make sure your conclusions on thickness basically are directly overlaid on your conclusions re shape. Great work. Mystery how you got nailed with the serve at the Big 4 pickle-off. :)
Any mention of that hexagon shaped Maverix Havik-16? They are coming out with Havik-15 in April/May
I have played a prototype of the 15mm havik and I have high hopes for that one. But regardless of the hexagon shape on the top of the paddle, the paddle is still 16.5" long and would be considered an elongated paddle.
@@pickleballeffect thanks Braydon
Hey Braydon, I noticed you touched on the "control" vs "power" paddles with the new CF Vanguards. I am not sure if I mistaken or not but back then I think I read somewhere about a paddle specification about the diameter of holes in the core. I tried looking at the USAP equipment rules but did not find it there. Maybe you could do some paddle breakdown and show the cores of the popular paddles out there. In practice, the structure of a pickleball paddle is not that very different from each other but how do two different paddles (same generation + identical specs) have a significant difference in control and power. Disregarding material type used or where they got their ingredients from, I could only think of diameter size and thickness of the core to contribute to the control/power a paddles has supposing the paddle have the exact same face material.
You're right, the cell diameter plays a role there, the number of facing layers plays a role, and the way the facing layers are oriented plays a role, as well as how the weight of the paddle is distributed. Those are all things that aren't always called out in the way a paddle is made but make a difference in how it plays.
Really question is…would you ever do a hang out at The Flying Pickle to give some newbies pointers so we can get good?
If you see me there, come get me! I’d be happy to play and offer some pointers.
When do you think you will get your hands on the Shogun? Looking for a power paddle and would love to hear your thoughts on that and the new Joola’s when you can. I was also curious about your thoughts on the Ethos Arete?
Big Second this…
I think I will have mine in a week or so. I will force Braydon to swing it if he didn't get one lol
@@DinkSmashMedia let’s go!
@@DinkSmashMedia have you ever played with the Ethos Arete?
@@Roboto_Gato Have one on the way. Should be a couple weeks. Very interesting shape
I’ve noticed lately that some of the people I play with regularly have gone to carbon fibre paddles and now they try to spin almost every shot. What are your thoughts on the technology? I’ve never used Selkirks or CRBN paddles but one guy I play with and against seems to have tremendous spin and he credits it to the CRBN paddle. Another related question, are there softer paddles and is a softer paddle the right choice for control and placement, or is the key to control, placement and power totally based on player skill vrs the paddle technology in the hand?
Paddles with raw carbon fiber faces like what the brand CRBN uses are known for producing better spin and do perform better in that area from tests I've performed. In regards to your second question, softer or more plush feeling paddles do help absorb more pace off the ball for you which can make it easier to keep the ball down and reduce pop ups and improve your control in general. However, while that is true for most players, it's not always the case, there is always personal preference to consider and some people just feel the ball better with stiffer paddles where the ball jumps off the face a little quicker. But generally speaking a softer, plush, control style paddle is going to help you control the ball better than something with more pop and power no matter what level you are.
What is the spinniest elongated paddle that is at least 8.5 oz.?
I'm about to buy a Gen 3 Scorpeus or Perseus, and I'm having trouble choosing which one. I'm a left-side doubles player (4.5), coming from a tennis background. I typically prefer the hybrid or elongated shape and a slightly longer handle for my twoey. This would make me lean toward the Perseus. But it has a relatively high swing weight (119) with a relatively low twist weight (6.08). The Scorpeus has a swing weight of 112 and twist weight of 6.9. It seems to me that the Scorpeus would still be plenty powerful with the new tech but would have more control and stability. 5.25" handle isn't ideal but I think I could still hit a 2-hand BH well, especially given the taper of the paddle shape. What do you think?
I currently play with a Ruby with one CRBN lead tape strip at 4 and 8 o'clock and love that shape and swing/twist weight combo, FWIW.
Take a look at the Hyperion 3. It's elongated and has the longer handle like the Perseus but has a lighter swingweight range around 115-118. It does have a little lower twistweight but the lighter swingweight allows you to add weight and boost the twistweight without the swingweight getting away from you. Here's the link to it, joolausa.com/ben-johns-hyperion-3-16mm-pickleball-paddle/?ref=8190.
@@pickleballeffect Super helpful, thanks! I forgot about this as an option because none of the early reviewers received a Hyperion. This does seem like a perfect compromise, and as you said I can add a couple of CRBN lead strips at 4 and 8 o'clock to increase stability without affecting swing weight too much.
You have any word on the next paddle from crbn? Anything you can say about it?
Nothing I can say yet
I was wondering if there was areas on a paddle, when using lead, that decreased the pop the least amount? My assumption would be the throat area, but idk.
Adding excess weight will decrease the pop done regardless of location. The amount of weight matters more than the location for that.
@pickleballeffect Do you think the same amount of weight spread out decreases it less versus it being concentrated in one area? Say, 1 gram per inch tape versus a 3 gram weight?
@@robedwards6926I haven’t tested that though I don’t think it would matter.
I am a 3.0 and wanting to get better in the kitchen. Im 5"4 too so need reach and power but need light and not cumbersome to move at the kitchen line in terms of moving quickly between forehand and backhand due to me still learning. I am mising balls on top edge but feel my hands are slow at the kitchen as a 3.0.
Which shape and swingweight would you recommend or rather is there a slightly powerful super non clunky maneuverable paddle with control?
I think a Hybrid shape would be the best option for you. It gives you some added length without getting too heavy. As far as a paddle recommendation, take a look at the Six Zero Black Diamond Infinity. It has the hybrid shape but is also edgeless which lowers the swingweight even more for a hybrid paddle and makes very maneuverable. It also has a little kick to it for the power you're looking for but it's not over the top power and can be controlled. You can check it out here, www.sixzeropickleball.com/products/infinity-edgless-black-diamond-power?sca_ref=3984855.EuK6iQZio1&sca_source=pr. Thank you very much. I will check it out. Appreciate your work and dedication 🙏
I seem to like elongated or hybrid paddles for touch and reach but I guess the shorter paddles are better in a fast hands battle. I enjoyed watching you, Will, Chris, and John Kew play against each other. You have to watch out for Chris trying to get cheap points on the opposing player up at the kitchen. Lol
Yeah, one of the big draws to the standard shape is its easy maneuverability. I’ve been playing with the Volair Mach 2 Forza as my main paddle for a while and absolutely love the hand speed it gives you. And I’m glad you watched my match with Chris, that was fun! He may have got the nasty Nelson in me but I got the pickle on him ha!
