Catfish should be grabbed with your index finger in front and the middle finger behind the spike on the outside and you thumb behind the near side spike, and crook of your thumb/index finger behind the top spike... it gives you full control of the fish and he can’t wiggle out of that hold and it leaves your other hand to handle the pliers and/or hook... imho

Oh and it's since gone up in price to maybe $30 on Amazon but the Hurricane Mako telescopic rod is the best budget rod I could find, it handles 30 inch striped bass no problem

It's the $20 ozark trail one from Walmart. I put pool noodles on it with zip ties
