  • Could this be the Penn Slammer 3 WORST FEATURE?
    Have you ever head the loud snap of your line as your $20 saltwater plug goes flying into the ocean? This has been a common issue for many using the Penn Slammer 3 3500 - 5500 series reels with the auto bail trip feature. In this video I will show you how to remove the auto bail trip feature from your Penn Slammer 3 and make it like the larger 6500 - 10500 series reels with the manual bail trip.

    I was a little concerned at first that something major was flawed with the Penn Slammer reels, but your fixed was fairly easy with a bit of instruction! I like to video myself when doing things like this, so I remember exactly how it all went back together in the event I get something out of order. It was easy enough to follow along with yours though! Clear and concise directions to fix it! Nicely done!

    Thanks for the video. Been meaning to look into how to do this for my 5500. I've lost a few nice plugs with the reel. Also, I'm like a lot of folks in that I usually screw stuff up when I attempt to take them apart. This modification was easy as pie. The hardest part was starting the screw that holds the ramp in when I put it back in after removing the ramp. Thanks again. I will now not hesitate to throw the heavy plugs with this again. Great reels!

    Thank's for the info on these reels as I have the 4500 and the 5500. I haven't experienced this issue yet and did not know of it until I watched this video. I will do this to my reels because, my luck would be I lose an expensive lure. Anyone running braid should always manually reset the bail any way so this automatic feature is useless.

    If you have the bail arm in the correct place when casting i.e line roller near finger holding the line- it won't close from momentum during casting. I agree though, I hate auto bail arms, I never use them and have always opened and closed them manually. Using them puts unnecessary pressure on parts like gears and the rotor. Only ever seen Chinese gents using the auto trip. All us Kiwis flick them open and closed by hand. Cheers for the vid mate. Dave down under

    Great information. Just get in the habit of closing bail manually. I just dont think its good for the reel or the line using the auto bail feature on any spinning reel. A few times sure no problem. But hundreds of times typically when you are casting lures, i think it makes a difference...my humble opinion of course lol...

    • @1Cast1Fish
      @1Cast1Fish  Před 4 lety +1

      Me as well....but the main issue with these reels, is that when surf casting with weight and bait....the momentum would close the bail on its own mid cast resulting in a snapped line and lost gear.

      This does not effect the sealing at all the hole the screw goes in is not all the way through anything....so no worries. This is a issue on the larger class reels, like the 5500 not so much the 3500. It happens more to some because ewe use the reels for surf casting and use heavy weights. The heavy bait and weight help cause the issue. If you cast heavy baits with the 3500 you could see the same issue.

    Thousands and thousands and thousands of casts with the Penn Slammer III 3500 and it has never once "tripped" at the end of the cast, indeed I didn't actually know that the 3500 had an auto bail trip because I am always manually flipping it back after a cast.

    • @1Cast1Fish
      @1Cast1Fish  Před 4 lety

      You will probably never have a issue with the 3500....it seems to be a issue more for surf casters since we tend to use heavier baits and weights. The momentum from a long sweeping cast with a heavier bait is what causes the bail to close early on the cast.

    I have slammer 3 along with gosa 6000 both r similar in size But the cranking power is not a comptition for gosa , aside from penn torque most of penn spinning reels having smaller main gear which is the cause for such low torque in their reels.

    • @1Cast1Fish
      @1Cast1Fish  Před 4 lety

      Interesting, I never have been able to compare them to anything else. I do not have any others to compare them to except other Penn's. Shimano makes a awesome product as well, and I have tons of freshwater reels from them. Probably can't go wrong with either.

    • @bobh1208
      @bobh1208 Před 2 lety

      Actually, the slammer has more pulling power, because it is a stronger reel (with stronger gear material, less plastic, and a handle joint pin that won't spontaneously break like I've seen a goosa [pre-2020, but less than a year old at the time] 6000's do, and fall to the deck, when not even in use!). If you're strong enough to turn the handle on the downstroke (and you shouldn't be fishing with hooks if you're not), the slammer can HANDLE more cranking power, for people who don't need electric reels for "cranking power"... and who know that grabbing the spool and falling back, using the backbone of the rod, is way more capable of moving a good sized shark, for instance, than trying to "crank" fish in with a spinner. If you're a bridge or pier fisherman, larger, easier to turn gears make you stronger in effect, when reeling in a hanging fish... but otherwise, any other sort of expert can fight stronger with a slammer. The Japanese manufacturers' design/marketing philosophy is smoothness and ease of pushing on the handle... which an expert doesn't absolutely need, from a boat or low land... whereas, sometimes an expert can absolutely use the strength of a slammer or a makaira, when getting the most out of his equipment, to move a fish. (And the worst thing you can get a kid is a reel that tends to keep him from learning how to use the rod for greatest effect.)

    • @bobh1208
      @bobh1208 Před 2 lety

      @@maasai- Simple physics concepts indeed, but they seem to elude you. Gear ratio makes MORE difference than gear bulkiness (hence the derisive term "granny gear" for any two speed conventionals whose low gear ratio is comically low)... and, gear ratio is always a trade off, speed vs ease... just like it is on a ten-speed bike... and the Slammer 4500 has a 6.2:1 gear ratio, and the Goosa 6000 (which feel bulky yet plastic-y to me, btw) happens to have a 5.7:1 ratio... so, it is more apples and oranges than you try to make it seem (and they're not EVEN the same size, in reality). But, if you (which is where CRANKING power comes from) honestly do not have enough power to reel on the downstroke of a pump, with a Slammer... I honestly pity you. And, if you do, the tougher of two spinning reels has more PULLING power, as an outfit... on a capable rod... if expertly taken advantage of, as a unit.

    The issue is the momentum on the handle, not the rotor that trips it. The handle rotates because of momentum of the cast causing the rotor to turn and trip the bail. By removing the ramp the handle can rotate 360 degrees and the bail won’t trip automatically. I have had dozens of reels where this wasn’t an issue, but I’ve also had a few where it was an expensive issue. If you’re really careful positioning the bail each cast it can be avoided. However, if your tired, lulled into a stuper after a few hundred casts or all excited by that blitz in front of you, you may not rotate the bail into the correct position, you’re going to launch one and snap it off. As the reel gets older and wears and in some new reels the lock on the bail can be too light letting the rotor easily turn from the momentum on the handle, and bing, there goes that lure.If you’ve never had this happen to you, consider yourself very skilled or very lucky. Unfortunately I’ve witnessed this dozens of time, even throwing away a number of my own lures. It’s very common. All my saltwater reels are now manual trip.

    • @1Cast1Fish
      @1Cast1Fish  Před 3 lety

      Manual trip is the way to go for sure...gets rid of alot of issues....sucks to cast and watch those expensive lures keep on going.

  • @jordanwaderosecatfishadven355
