for killing my darlings, I have a folder in my scrivener called "scrap heap" so whenever i have to cut something, I have a place to put it, so its like im not actually getting rid of it even if I never look at it again. I find that that helps me when getting rid of extraneous stuff without feeling like I wasted my time writing it. And, sometimes, I even go back to it and find something to add in later :)
Words cannot express how badly my heart and soul needed this video today.

Since you're on your way to Columbus, OH you NEED to stop at The Book Loft when you get there! It's in old German Village and it's several houses smashed into one book store. There are entire rooms dedicated to different topics. It's BEAUTIFUL 🤩

You're so organized. I'm a INFP and I struggle with planning and executing those plans. You inspire me because even you use tactics to keep yourself on track.
I'm an underwriter, yet I still need to delete stuff all the time. I go on a tangent that's interesting to me in the moment of writing, and later I find I went of track so hard, I'm basicaly writing another book! Oh well.. maybe one day I'll learn.

I have written three books, and the first two were definitely underwritten, but the last one (my current WIP) I'm 50k in and not quite halfway. It's been really weird to be working for so long on the same project when my others were much shorter, but I guess every project is different? I guess we'll find out 😂

I was doing research on cozy mystery novels and how to outline one of them. Its kinda a mix between a detective noir and a cozy mystery. But anyways the article I read gave me a great formula for the basic story idea.
charming setting + daily life of character + detective/murderer/murder mystery = cozy mystery
But more interestingly this same idea had a few ideas/examples and one of them was A “haunted” castle, a groundskeeper, and a horde of curious teens. Which sounded an aweful lot like Scooby-Doo meets Princess Bride to me. So I hope that idea isn't hone forever.
Yeah! The seasons are changing, but motivation is always needed.

On another note: the moss stitch is a great easy stitch. You can do it while watching TV without thinking too hard lol
Ahhh, I stopped in Downtown Springfield on my way up to visit my brother last January! It was so pretty and snowy. I think I bought like 3 books at this store that had a very friendly cat in it, I wish I could remember the name.

Completly agree with the timer! But I myself find it the most effective if I'm on a live sprint with others. It's more of a push I guess. I wish there was more of the spooky season in the Netherlands... That cherry drink looked delicious lol! And those decotations are so cute!
Yay One Piece!
Because I always pants my first drafts (I just enjoy the exploration without a map) I'm an underwriter in a lot of ways. But then, once the skeleton is assembled I really dress the heck out of what's there, overwriting myself into oblivion.
I think making my piece with what I love about the writing process has helped a lot with edits. The overwriting is really for me, I'm my audience. It makes the edits hurt less.
Maybe something like buying clothes you love but styling an outfit more like a grown up than a kid. I don't have to wear everything in my closet, just the pieces that come together just right.
These are such great analogies, I love it so much!! Yes, leaning into my own process and identifying why I do it, and why I love it, has helped so much!! Even if it can sometimes mean more "work," I'm having fun all along the way.

I love that book on Pirates! I have it as an audiobook! I’m usually an over writer and have to figure out what belongs, what needs to combine and what needs to be cut! Its so hard sometimes!!

Last novel I self-published: Firstly binned a protagonist I was loving writing as. He just didn't work out, thousands of words gone. Same book, binned a scene with two police officers interviewing a suspect. Loved the interaction of this pair. But when your CP says the crime has to go, so does the interrogation scene. That one still hurts.

My boyfriend works the unload team at Home Depot and I lost my mind over the Jack Skellington.
I don't want to kill my darlings but that's how my story goes. Really don't want to kill one of them but that's the final scene and I'm still at the beginning, so that character has time.
Oooh yes, killing characters can be so tough!! We grow so attached, even though we usually know early on when they're going to die. We truly do it to ourselves, don't we? Bahaha.

I have pantsed a few shorter pieces but never a novel. I started to write a novel with no outline but I guess the short fiction experiences convinced me it was a bad idea. But I still want to try taking a couple of interesting characters and a situation and my imagination to see what happens. I wonder if pantsing is easier if you write realistic fiction versus speculative fiction. Also, after watching this I wish I had a place to put a 10' skeleton. On the bright side, I live alone so no one can object if I put Halloween stuff all over the apartment.

I'm mostly an underwriter but sometimes I'll just go ham and overwrite a scene, either because I got a really vivid image or because (more likely) I really want to get wordcount but I don't know what actually happens next.
So I am definitely an over writer but in the kind of way that once I edit my books down its under 25000 words. I have to write 100,000 words to get a decent 25,000 story. My NaNoWriMo goal is actually to stay below 60,000 words in my story idea. I want to see if I can be more consice.

Hey Kate, I haven't been on CZcams for a while and missed a lot of your videos. While watching this one I couldn't stop wondering why you are cutting your story so much. Did you query and have to cut it so it can be published? Or was it another decision of you to just make?

Ahhh, I actually have a new vlog going out today where I explain it all at the beginning. Sorry that this one was confusing!! Basically the rate I was on with this draft originally, it was going to be WAY over industry standard. (Which is only important because I want to query and hopefully traditionally publish this book and, fingers crossed, it would be my first tradpub novel. Typically publishers are more strict with first books!)
