    Finish Your Damn Novels,
    Short Story Submissions,
    How to Structure a Series,
    Brand Management,
    and Reading!
    Here's what the first week looked like for my longest writing experiment yet!

    What class would you take if you could control your own "writing semester"? What's a topic within writing you've always wanted to explore more but haven't had the time (or been able to make the time) to do so?
    What's your favorite class you've ever taken (in real life, lolol)?
    What's your FAVORITE series you've ever read and why? (And what's your least favorite? Any you DNF'd partway through? Why?)

    KATE. You've done it again! You always come up with such creative and fun experiments that just absolutely tickle me! Recently, I was lamenting about missing school (I've been out for 10 years now). School Supplies at Target is the start of my favorite season(s) of the year, and I often peruse the aisles as though I were back-to-school shopping. Well guess who's jumping on the bandwagon this year! I'm for sure doing this too! Amazing! Can't wait to see how it works out for you!

    I recently submitted a short story but got rejected lol, I remember once Stephen King in his On Writing said he would pin every rejection letter to his wall from a nail. By the time I was fourteen,” he said, “the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing.”
    I can’t be any more inspired.

    • @johntubbs6617
      @johntubbs6617 Před rokem +4

      Think if Steven King had given up back then, what a void in the Book stores and Libraries. The average writer got about 30 rejection letters, but they learned what the publishers were looking for in the end by that process.

      @KateCavanaugh  Před rokem +9

      @@KateCavanaugh Yeah many rejections now do not really tell you what's wrong with it either or that they have a story similar to that already. Which makes it hard to know or where to improve it or give up on it.. I never submitted anything yet, I knew I wasn't ready and glad I didn't (Even I would have rejected my early stuff now) That's how you learn this craft, no other way. I think it takes about ten years being all the craft books or classes never teach the whole process at one time. Just a fact. You learn just like building a story from scratch.

Oh well, we are jumping on the bandwagon _at some point_ 😅
    I would be really curious to know how you went about structuring your syllabus and adding assignments? Also how did you choose your 5 classes? I've been thinking about how I would do my own version of this for less than 5 minutes and I can already think of 10 classes I could add, which is definitely far too many 🙊

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  Před rokem +2

      LOLOL! I love that! Tell me all your class ideas!! I had a good idea for 4 of them (needing to set aside time for my current WIPs, wanting to read more and get more involved in booktube, needing to update my websites, and hoping to structure my Meridian Maps series) and then had been reading up on some short story contests and was like AHA that's my final class.
      I think you could totally do like a "mini-mester" for 4 weeks or something like that too. I took a couple of those (in actual college bahaha). GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FUTURE EXPERIMENT! :)

    • @MartaCanPixel
      @MartaCanPixel Před rokem +1

      @@KateCavanaugh Ooooh a mini-mester sounds really fun! I was thinking of doing some writing-ones similar to what you did, but then also adding art-based ones like graphic design, book cover design, character design (I actually bought a class forever ago that I've been meaning to take for this one hahaha) and then I also think it'd be cool to add PE, because calling it a class might make me actually stick to my workouts for once 🤣

    • @tropistan7735
      @tropistan7735 Před rokem

      @@MartaCanPixeldo you mean graphic design, book cover design and character design as three seperate classes? If so, might I suggest you combine all three into one class and call it Graphics course? Those can be modules. I 10x'd my graphics design learning by jumping straight into book cover design. I just collected books covers I liked, labelled them from simple to advanced and started producing my own similar copies by looking up CZcams videos for each aspect as I tried them. Day one I watched software basics and 101 videos and day 2 I just started trying to copy simple book covers. I learned so much more than previous attempts at just learning a technique in a vacuum. (Sorry for the lecture!)
      I had been thinking about the school schedule method since June and this video inspired me so much I spent 2 hours yesterday coming up with 5 classes (combining topics and realizing that seperating them was just giving me a longer to- do list), the goals, objectives and assignments for all my classes. I have never created such a comprehensive plan so fast! Thanks, Kate!!❤

    Do you think you'll check out the One Piece live action series? I think it'll be interesting to see how they change things in the adaptation and how that works or doesn't. I'm intrigued by how they'll tackle everything in 8 episodes (I think it's doable).
    I always enjoyed how academic approaches to art and writing kind of shifts the perspective from just enjoying a work to trying to understand how it was made. It never really took away the magic but it did really help make it easier to create by recognizing that the flaws didn't take away the magic of the work. Sometimes they are why something is so enjoyable.

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  Před rokem +1

      I totally agree! It's a different kind of magic, it sort of opens your eyes to how you too can make the art you love and enjoy most.
      I'll definitely check out the live action series! I need to watch more of the anime and revisit the manga. It's always fun to see where adaptations succeed/"fail" and investigate why I personally loved some changes and not others. Like a, "is this inherent to the medium itself and they ddi the best they could or did they butcher this and could've done it better??"

    • @ringsroses
      @ringsroses Před rokem

      @@KateCavanaugh From the episode information that we have at the moment I think it'll be an interesting example of character development because in the initial arc that happens with Luffy, he's kind of unlikable and annoying. By the arc that should be the last two episodes he becomes more than simply an obnoxious dreamer. A lot of the emotional beats are quite powerful over the series of arcs that will be the first season. Obviously in the live action this will be heavily dependent on the actors ability to convey what the writing does over a longer period of time in the anime and manga.
      Personally I think the tightest arc/s are the Water 7/Enies Lobby arcs. They're still the two arcs that I think pack in a lot of character and emotional development alongside world building.
      I think (especially early on) One Piece is a great example of world building without overloading your audience. It is so heavily dependent on the characters themselves but each character gives you a direct view into the world via their backstories. And, Oda repeats themes in different ways to kind of push home the idea that the world itself is full of injustice and as such freedom is entirely radical. It's all fairly clear but without feeling like a lecture.
      And, that's seriously challenging to do well even though it looks so easy. Later on in the series I would say things get more complicated and a bit messier but the earlier parts of the series are fascinating to study.
