- Today we take a road trip, to the west coast of Central Portugal, to visit the seaside city of Figueira da Foz. Its the second largest city in the Coimbra district in Portugal and a great place to enjoy the sunshine and the waves. The Mondego river runs from the Serra da Estrela mountains for 258 kilometres until its mouth reaches the Atlantic ocean in Figueira da Foz.
Our visit was brief but we absolutely loved it, and we hope that you did too. đ€
We are Ken & Gina, and we left the UK in 2019 in search of a simpler life, away from our office jobs, and the hustle and bustle of the big city. We sold our house, left the UK, and left the Rat race behind us, to move to Portugal and buy a farm. We found an amazing farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal where we have lived for the last two and a half years. We make these videos for our friends and family to keep up with whatâs going on in our new lives and as a record to look back on one day so see how far we have come. My great great grandfather JoĂŁo AntĂłnio was the architect that made that clocktower you saw at 3:00 in figuera possible and many other buildings throughout figuera in the days of salazar, my family has lived there and coimbra for decades but further before that it was even more north in the days of nobility as hereditary barons with distant ties to the count of vila flor, i look at this video and it brings back such memories of the times i was there in person, although no longer am i in portugal through these videos it makes me feel as if im still there and it brings me joy, thank you!
You aren't really from figuera unless you've been forced to listen to marcha do vapor on repeat on old recording constantly whenever your at your grandparents place

The fish are Grey Mullet, used to catch em in Ireland but never ate them as they are known to feed at sewer outlets, true bottom feeders lol, the guy at 8:10 snagged himself a Sea Bass by the looks of it now that is worth eating

Nice video. I've been in Fig.da Foz several times. You should have made a trip over the bridge to the Praia do Cabedelo. There it' s very amazing with a lot of surfers and it can be very good for swimming (at low tide without strong swell of cause). Starting there you can make a nice walk down the beach to the hospital area where you can find a nice restaurant, which name I don't remember yet.

Figueira da Foz one of my favourite beaches. Only second to Praia Formosa, one of the many beautiful beaches in Sta Cruz, Torres Vedras.
So fab to meet you both! We did head down to the end of the beaches as you mentioned and there was great access to the beach and some lovely cafe/ restaurants too!

Harriet and I have been to Figueira da Foz. A hidden gem for most international tourists, it must be nice to be able to decompress from Farm Life once in a while. What a treat.

We just missed you by a few days! We were there on Monday looking at a property listing. The boardwalk was nice there and we enjoyed the beach, but it was a bit cool and windy. Definitely not bikini weather!

Portugal is such a beautiful country with so many places to experience and explore...we live by the Foz do Arelho - where the lagoon meets the sea. Have you been to the Venice of Portugal yet? (Aveiro). It's less than an hour from Figueira and definitely worth a visit. Great video and glad you enjoyed your day off of farm life.

I had a look at it on the Marine Traffic website. Looks like it was dredging the bay there. I guess it keeps the sand out of the estuary so ships can get into the harbour
@@OKportugal Correct, I was involved in Hydrographic surveying for that company. This was the reason I ended up living in Portugal. But not at the coast I have seen it all along the coast. I love the nature though, but inland central is the best part and the people are extremely nice.

Thanks Iris. It was a special medieval market day so I think it only happens ocxasionally but perhaps they have other markets there in that space. I'm not sure.

I think it was around 200km
Nice trip. The fish that you see on the water are called "Tainha" and is not recommend to eat , On the shoreline they are abundant but they also eat everything, like plastic and oil. They taste like sh..t .The good ones are on the sea away from the coast. Keep on

Glad you showed us a part of Figuiera da Foz, is one of the places that calls my name. That enormous mug, is it plastic or ceramic? do you buy it along with the beer? It is quite beautiful and you will put it to good use back at the farm

It is even a bit cold there in figueira da foz in summer. The strong wind, fog and humidity there really make people feel uncomfortable even in summer

We haven't imported it yet so.it can't legally circulate on the roads here. We might look at doing it soon but it's expensive as they charge huge import taxes on cars here.
Those fish are TaĂnha (Mullet). We don't eat those. They are like the sea version of city pidgeons. Not to be eaten, lol.

You can eat wild pidgeons, but no city pidgeons.
The same way you can eat wild mullet, but you won't fish them out of a marina... Where they are full of crap and pollution.

@@OKportugal You'll see them in any marina or pier. They generally like to live close to humans. They don't really mind polluted waters and they eat all sorts of crap. As I said, they're the pidgeons of the sea.
