- Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere sits down with Jime, an expat from Argentina who has moved to Portugal. She and her husband didn't choose Lisbon or Porto though. They decided to be in a smaller town along the water on the Silver Coast. The town is called Espinho and just south of Porto. Is it too small though? Will someone get bored in a small town? What about the weather? Jime reveals the truth about life in a small town in Portugal.

Jime is adorable and very relatable . She should be a regular on the channel.
Thank you for your kind words
Thank you very much. What would you like her to do? Maybe we can get her to share her Pros and Cons of Espinho list? Or bring her on our podcast to do something more in-depth? Give us some ideas. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere
You guys are so great at what you do! Sometimes you interview certain expats and their perspectives on the experience are particularly illuminating and intriguing. You almost want to check in later and to see how their journey and thoughts about living in Portugal are evolving. Jime is a great example. Josh interviewed an expat who moved to Lisbon several months ago who had great thoughts about the transition to Portugal. Kalie had a lady musician in Porto in a live group who was really interesting. I’m just so curious about how their adjustment to Portugal has been going over time, what challenges they faced as they got more into it, what became easier, what they have continued to learn? Are they still in that area or did they move on?
It’s just a thought. More than anything thanks for all you guys do. I can’t tell you how helpful your channel has been.
@@RThirkill Thank you very much. It's honestly, not a bad idea at all. Maybe it's something we could do on our podcast as well. The real tricky thing about CZcams is the title and thumbnail aspect. I don't know if we could make the connection between the guest's first interview with us and their second so people that have seen the first realize it's them and we create an increased desire to watch the second one.
Let us think about this. - Josh & Kalie
Arent most people when put in the limelight and a position where they are asked for their opinions? She is the typical godless childless liberal living a selfish life of self fulfillment /DINK.
I absolutely loved this interview. Kalie was so spot on with her questions and manner, and Jime was delightful to listen to. Her responses were thoughtful and had depth. Both were easy to listen to and informative. This is one of my most favorite expatseverywhere videos. Great job!
Glad you enjoyed it! We loved this one too. We really liked the look, feel and pace of the way this one turned out. We'll keep doing expat interviews as long as people keep watching them. 😁 Jime has an in-depth pros and cons list for Espinho so that could by a contributing factor for her thoughtful responses. We got finished with the interview she felt unsatisfied with her ability to cover the topics. 😅 We thought she was great. - Josh & Kalie
Espinho is a beach with a lot of teenage memories for me...
Because the train station are so close to the main beach and city center with everything we might need, its the most famous beach - town of the Porto area for generations.
Perfect to teenage groups or young adults that dont own a car.
Until i have my first car, Espinho was the way for everyone i grow up with, and i am from north-east porto town....
Thanks for sharing, Ricardo! - Josh & Kalie
Thanks a lot for this interview! So informative, pleasant and nice!
Great interview! Excellent questions and insightful, thoughtful answers to them!
Thank you! ❤
This is a GREAT interview, Kalie! I was super excited because it's ESPINHO that you're talking about!!! Our neighbors and best friends from the mountains of Virginia USA moved to Espinho and they LOVE it!!! We've visited and can't WAIT to return. A GREAT little city in Portugal with NO cruise ships in sight! (YAY)
I really love the interview style of this video. Very informative and entertaining! 5 stars!!
Bom dia! Nice interview. Thanks for showing a lesser known area. Portugal is Awesome!
Kalie, I've said this before... you are such a great interviewer!! Great chat. I 100% agree with smaller towns, and language, and what she said about the Portuguese not owing us (non-Portuguese) anything. I want to become fairly fluent eventually and it won't likely happen if I only speak English. Jime was a great guest. I do like when you interview other immigrants.
Central silver coast is the real deal
Thanks, Jen. We appreciate the feedback. - Josh & Kalie
I’m visiting Spain and Portugal from USA I’m currently in Viana de Castelo Portugal
And I’m on my way to Espinho as I am typing this
I’m staying in Espinho tonight ready to enjoy the beach
Kalie, you really are a great interviewer.....you ask valid questions, you are patient in waiting for the full answer, and you are engaging. Thank you!
Hi, thank you very much for the feedback. - Josh & Kalie
Hi Kaylie, nice interview. Thanks for doing it.
I love that one of their top priorities was being able to swim in natural water, that's one of ours too! Most people think it's a strange need.
Love the questions you asked and the way dived into the realities.
Thank you very much! - Josh & Kalie
Jame I am so sorry you lost your father! Hope your trip goes smooth.
Thanks! Another great in-depth video revealing the many aspects of expat-ing to Portugal that are not discussed anywhere else. What a fantastic guest! I thought she shared many interesting points. & Kaylee was sharp with her questions.
I appreciate this unique info as we are planning a move ourselves.
ALSO I just want to say it takes a lot of time and effort for Josh & Kaylee to generate these videos and share great content that help us so much. We all subscribe to so many things I just think if you have not already send some thanks$$ from time to time 😀

Nice interview, just loved it! Espinho seems a great place to be.
Great interview.
Very good and informative interview, Kalie!
Thanks so much! - Josh & Kalie
REFRESHING! Real people. Valid questions. Honest answers. ❤❤
Thank you. Jime is an awesome interviewee. - Josh & Kalie
Hi Jime and Kalie. I loved the interview. Myself and my 2 daughters moved to Portugal, from the US in Nov 2022. We live in Espinho too and love it. We plan to stay here. I hope to see you around. Love the shots of Espinho! My younger daughter worked at 37 Na Praia this past summer and Patinho is a regular hang for us - best pingo in town. Winter is almost over😘😘. Anne
Hi Anne, thanks for the love. You'll likely see Max and Jime around before you see us (Josh & Kalie). If you come to Porto, you'll likely see us. You could come to a meetup though. The next one is in February. - Josh & Kalie
Great interview, Kalie! Thanks also for highlighting a lesser known area in Portugal, as I'm still searching for my "forever " area. Great insights! Thanks as always, fantastic info!❤
Thank you, Mo. We really hope to find people in interesting places doing interesting things to bring you all a video interview once a month. Wish us luck! - Josh & Kalie

I spent a month in Espinho in January of 2022. Lots of rain, the apartment I rented was cold, the waves were fierce in the Winter (dangerous) and not much happening socially. Affordability is definitely much better than Porto or Lisbon. If you like a quieter pace, it’s a lovely place to be, especially in the warmer dryer months of the year. I was their last March and it was way more pleasant.
Thanks for sharing, Wilfred. - Josh & Kalie
No one goes to espinho 😅
@@joanacagido7457 for a lot of people that would be a plus.
I live on the central Oregon coast now and this sounds identical to our weather here. Winters are miserable with lots of rain and pounding waves, the towns basically shut down for much of the winter. It's freezing and cold, and it hails (small pebbles). Spring is full of rain every day but it's warmer, at least. The summers are bustling and gorgeous, and tourism is the biggest economic driver. Everything's blooming and the weather is fantastic, but not too warm (averages ~65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, with a few outliers).
Another great interview, Kalie!
Thank you again! - Josh & Kalie
Excellent interview!
Thank you! - Josh & Kalie
My partner and I are considering a move to PT in the future. We first visited Porto ~7 years ago, visited again in 2022 and will be coming back again in a couple of months. Initially my partner was all about Porto but we visited Espinho and we really liked it. It's so close to Porto via train, its quiet, and of course it's less expensive. We currently live in a city of ~90k so we are used to quiet times like winter time, and our largest city is 2 hours by car. The nice thing about either being retired/semi-retired and/or being a remote worker you could leave the area for month or so in the winter....like going to the Algarve. Nice getting Jime's take on living there!
Best interview on
Portugal…keep going
Thank you. - Josh & Kalie
Well done Kalie I found the interview very professional. 👍
Wow, thank you! - Josh & Kalie
Olá! Thank you for an excellent video. We are retired American educators in Europe now after helping a new school open in Lviv. We stayed in Krakow for 6 weeks and in Tallinn for one month. We plan on returning to Europe in the fall, exploring Portugal and possibly our next home location. This area has amazing towns, beaches, and boardwalks. We love a walkable and accessible city. Healthcare, transportation, safety, and reliability are our concerns. Obrigado!! Dean & Cindy
Great info. It confirms my suspicions about tourism impact seasonally and the weather north of Lisbon. I currently live in Tucson AZ USA where the desert weather is mild in the winter. I moved here from a tourist town where there are lots of things to do 6mo. but it’s a hassle navigating the crowds. The other 6mo. most things are closed. I’m thinking I need a larger city where the tourism impact is offset with lots of other things to do year round. You gave me something to think about when you asked whether it’s seeing the water or being in the water that’s important for the location you pick. 🤔 I’m curious about Setubal both from the weather and accessibility standpoint. I will need to walk or have public transportation. Did you or Josh do a video on this and I just missed it? Thanks 😊
Thank you very much. Yes, we've done a video on Setúbal. On our channel page, you can search any keyword/city and if we have it, it should pop up. - Josh & Kalie
So no problems with internet or wifi. Love all the Info about Portugal.
its my experience that Vitamin D helps with the winter blues
Love Jime's hair colour!
We do too! - Josh & Kalie
Very useful interview with a balanced coverage of the issues. A few things that were not covered, unless I missed them: housing - are they renting? how did they find their housing? plans to purchase?, etc. ; experience with the medical system? do they have private medical insurance? ; what kind of visa are they using? ; banking - were they able to open a local account? was that easy to do?. Also, a number of tourists comment that many people smoke in public spaces. Is that just a big city tourist area problem? That would have been an interesting question.
A general comment: Some of the b-roll shots seemed to have been stock footage of things (random city street, restaurant, nightlife, subway, etc.) and not actual footage from Espinho but it was not possible to tell which was which. Confusing.
Great interview! Interesting how people choose places where to live …
Thanks!
Thank you! We appreciate the channel support, Abey. - Josh & Kalie
Canadian here and moving to Portugal next month. I will just say you are so lucky that Canadian project of yours didn't work (specially when you are prone to seasonal blues)
Running away from Trudeau ? Lol
Great interview Kalie! Josh should buy you a Superbock since you did such a great job! 😜🍻
Thanks, Robin! I'm always buying her Super Bock. - Josh & Kalie
Winter 2021 it was dry and sunny. Winter 2022 it rained 90 days so let’s see what winter 2023 will be. It’s not always rainy and gloomy.
This video is great and very informative. You do have a clip in there of a San Francisco Muni train. I see the Balboa Park station sign.
Thank you very much. What time was the clip at? I didn't personally edit this one. - Josh
It is at the 8.29 marker. When you talk about transportation.
@@lamontjackson3211 yes, I remember this sequence. It was general stock footage of trains that Maria, our Portuguese part-time editor, found. This basically the moment, we decided that we needed to use footage of the location if we're talking about a specific location like the train station in Espinho. - Josh
I have S.A.D. and I don't recommend any place that has mild or harsh winter. I would feel super depress during winter time and my energy levels would drop by 60%.
Avoid the north of Portugal then. - Josh & Kalie
Or get a light therapy lamp!
Long time Indian viewer living in Aveiro currently . It was nice to see an Indian Railways in your edit at 8:34. 👍👍
😁 Thank you. We don't have enough train b-roll so we had to use some stock footage there. There's not a lot for Portugal in general on the subscription we have so a lot of what we have is what we shoot. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere You both are great. You are our go to guy to clarify any of our issue. We still go to your Medical Insurance and Real Estate videso. Wonderful, wonderful content. Thanks a lot.

Fun fact is Portuguese railways use the same wide track gauge of 5'6" 1668mm as India does.

Do more of this…please…want to know portugal…great…each area
We have a huge backlog of interviews are will continue to try to do an interview every month or so. - Josh & Kalie
Would have liked to hear costs for rent, food etc.
How Cold is cold. Portugal is not a typical coldn country and often February is spring time weather and 60s in some places. I think of that as warm and almost hot for February
You should also highlight on the fact's about many expats leaving portugal.
We've got our take on it and we're preparing a video to talk about it. Thank you. - Josh & Kalie
I am still on the fence about moving there, even after having travelled in several areas. The summer heat is really tough, and there is the issue of mold, but amazing food.
Sounds like Porto in a new build should do the trick. ;-) - Josh & Kalie
Katie, great interview. I am looking to retire soon.... in two years when I am 60. I am looking for a place that is connected to transport like Jime and near water. I am a view person. I love the ocean! I presently live on an island and would like to move to Portugal. I speak the language so that will not be a problem. Have you done any research on great places for retirees to live? I would be very interested!
Thank you. We haven't done a video specifically on retirement destinations. - Josh & Kalie
Same here - moving to Espinho in another 1.5 years would love to connect with Jime!
2:52 where is this shot taken?

Hi there , I have a question about Portugal Visa , For example let’s say the Visa for Retiree ,could the visa be applied and arranged within Portugal or we must apply for it from our country of residency ?
Thanks .
Hi. Apply from your home country. - Josh & Kalie
I appreciate all the first-experience content but I would love more insight on taxes.
We have a money episode on our podcast. By far and away, the best thing to do to understand taxes better is to speak to a tax professional about your specific situation. - Josh & Kalie
We are Australian and recently moved with family to Praia Da Rocha and were surprised by how run down most of the buildings are and how windy it is at the beach which really spoils the Beach lifestyle. We will move back to Bodrum Turkiye ASAP as the water and landscape is so much more beautiful and its rarely windy. Positives have been the beautiful people and high quality affordable red wine as a treat. Crazy expensive rent here though 😅
Have you tried Portuguese food?
@Pandax0x Well I live here currently so yes. I don't eat seafood unfortunately so I enjoy it but don't love it.
Did you not research how the buildings and such were before hand? Sounds like you came site unseen.
Yes very windy the all coast of Portugal and sea very cold!Big turn off for a lot of people.
I listened very closely to your video. I'm still in Coimbra, where I rented in December 2021 after watching your video from July 2021. I took a direct flight from Tigre, Argentina, and I like Portugal a lot.
The great advantage is to speak English here, Spanish is known, but not very much liked. People are really nice.
Hi Teo! Thanks for the comment. - Josh & Kalie
How were they able to stay a year as far as immigration rules go?
They moved with a residency visa. - Josh & Kalie
Jesus, I lived in the North, water is freezing, even in Summer, if you wanna live by the Ocean to swim move to sunny coastal Alentejo, South of Lisbon
So, cost of living in Portugal is very affordable, but it´s a lot more fun if ou have a salary/income from a country with much higher cost of living (and pay less taxes than locals due to NHR status) because - I feel so bad for them!!! Why is it like that??? - salaries in Portugal are much lower. So close to self-awareness. So close.
"Very easy process to get the visa", this is the fastest way to go down in security
Interesting. Others would say an open door policy.
This was very interesting and useful for me. I could relate to so much she was saying, and her perspective on moving to Portugal.
Just one piece of advice #Expats everywhere - stay away from the annoying stock video footage. I spent time peering at it to see if was actually Espinho, and actually your guest, but it obviously wasn't (unless they have London buses there...?). It really adds nothing and actually makes your content look dodgy and fake, which I'm sure it's not. OTOH, more shots of Espinho would have really been nice.
Hey, Annie. We had a lot of our own footage in their. Stuff that we didn't have enough of, our Portuguese PT editor added what she could find. It is what it is. We liked her work on this one. We ran out of time to go to Espinho again to get what was missing. Every shot of Espinho was ours because there's zero stock footage of the town. - Josh & Kalie
What if you scaled up and hired local Portuguese? They get paid and you get paid. Everybody wins.
Not sure what you're commenting on. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere When she mentioned about working online making US dollars and living in Portugal.
@@ExpatsEverywhere She could grow her online business getting paid un USD and finding some locals to work for her and use the currency arbitrage to her advantage.
why expat? why not calling it what it is: immigrants
What's the definition of expat and immigrant then?
Why do you call yourselves "expats"? The correct word is: "immigrants".
Because eventually, we'll leave. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere That's not the definition of an "expat". An expatriate is somebody who doesn't stay in his "patria" (= home country) - it doesn't say anything about the lenghts of the absence. I have "expat" friend who don't intend to return to their country anytime soon, but they call themselves "expats" anyway.
Copied from the net:
Semantics of the word expat:
Dictionary definitions for the current meaning of the word include:
Expatriate:
'A person who lives outside their native country' (Oxford)
or
'living in a foreign land' (Webster's).[
These definitions contrast with those of other words with a similar meaning, such as:
Migrant:
'A person who moves from one place to another in order to find work or better living conditions' (Oxford),[5] or
'one that migrates: such as a: a person who moves regularly in order to find work especially in harvesting crops' (Webster's);[6]
or
Immigrant
'A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country' (Oxford),[7] or
'one that immigrates: such as a: a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence (Webster's).[8]
The varying use of these terms for different groups of foreigners can be seen as implying nuances about wealth, intended length of stay, perceived motives for moving, nationality, and even race. This has caused controversy, with some commentators asserting that the traditional use of the word "expat" has had racist connotations.[9][10]
@@ExpatsEverywhere The right word for foreigners whom eventually leave is: tourists ... :-)
@@svenlima right and the word Immigrant as you display here says "permanently", which is generally accepted to be different than expat.
@@svenlima also it appears you copied and pasted your definition from wikipedia so here what's in the same article "People could more readily choose to live for several years in a foreign country, or be sent there by employers."
Expat , no.
Immigrant , yes
What's an expat then if Jime and Max aren't it? - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywherean expat will come to country, live there for a number years, benefit from whatever that country has to offer, and then leave. An immigrant will move to a country to live, probably forever.
@@Haiyan25 they're not planning to live in Portugal forever. That wasn't the plan when they moved. That's our point. - Josh & Kalie
