- Today I'm testing out the Ampere Dusk sunglasses, which are said to be the first app-enabled electrochromic smart sunglasses. One feature I didn't highlight was the fact that there is a microphone that can be used for taking calls when connected to your phone. The Ray-Ban Stories also have this feature.

#sunglasses #rayban #smartglasses - Jak na to + styl
Seems like an item I would frequently forget to charge and be left without a useful sunglasses.
This is pretty cool technology, since the prescription Transitions that I wear do not trigger while driving (minimal UV through the windshield). It would be fabulous to be able to push button my glasses to darker tint. Hopefully this technology will speed up to the mainstream optical centers. Meanwhile, I am stuck with the over the glasses granny sunglasses.
They have had what you’re saying for long. Look up dusk
Have you looked into glasses frames that have a magnetic snap on sunglass piece?
Transitions xtra active lenses change to sunglasses even in the car. Only downside is they don’t turn completely clear like the regular transitions do.
@@falxonPSN Yes, I had a pair of prescription glasses with sunglass piece that magnetically attached, but I found that there was a reflection because of the small gap that was annoying while driving. I just think that having an integrated darkening that I can control would be a game changer.
I don't know what we would do without you. I'm being serious too, let me explain: I will never buy these, no real point in them for me, BUT, your reviews are always so genuine that it's impossible not to watch your videos even when not interested in the item you are reviewing just due to how genuine your reviews are, they aren't biased at all, you don't hype something up that's less than stellar just for a sponsor, your reviews I feel are sincere, which these days on CZcams, are VERY hard to come by. Thank you, so much. Just know that you are appreciated for all of your hard and amazing work!
Agreed, and well said!
I'm the same way. 😀
@@linda-moonlight I am wearing contacts. Say I go to SixFlags, and I go into a ride that has a dark building as the entrance. Instead of taking off the sunglasses and putting them in the case, I can just press a button. I have transition glasses but I have to remove them for the ride.
"Hey bro, let's go"
"Can't, gotta charge my sunglasses"
I can just see it now:
"Hey, you ready to go?"
"Hold on, I gotta charge my glasses!"
I can see this technology being useful on car windows for privacy and shade.
Yeah! That is also something I heard they are looking into doing with window film too!
Companies have been selling tint-adjustable windows since 2015. Not sure if anyone has done it for car windows, though.
Edit: A bit more googling found companies that sell this.
This tech is already in use in a few car manufacturers sunshades (sunroof). It really is a cool tech!
That would have to take into consideration the maximum tint level legality in various places
@@lunavixen015 And also whether it's a moving violation or a non-moving violation. In the former case, you could up the tint when parked.
I love the sound comparison part. Great vid as always!
I received my Dusks a few weeks ago after I had to change from the dusk with blue light, I think I have photophobia and need to wear sunglasses most of the time and sometimes even inside because of fluorescent lights and these glasses make a real difference and just wearing them in no tint mode is really good and yes being able to change at the push of a button is amazing, I don't really use the audio because I usually use my ear buds but I've used them for calls and they have been nice and clear with no complaints from the other side.
I like the idea of them. Recently got Lasik done eyes are super sensitive. It will be awhile of before they completely heal.
They have always been sensitive to light though but now I feel I need them indoors.
They look really good on you, even better then round lens ones! I like these. If you use these all the time then the price issue hurts less but definitely like them over the Ray Band which I’m a fan of.
Nooo the round lens glasses are so fire
I think he is so fire no matter which glasses he have 🔥
Totally agree. They fit your face very well! I actually prefer low base.
They really should have an auto adjust feature/option based on sunlight
Thank you so much! I thought the same damn thing all it needed was one small sensor you wouldn't even see and then you can walking into buildings and they'd adjust for thr light differences
Probably impact battery life quite a lot
Pretty awesome technology! Definitely seems like, as with a lot of tech, it'll get much better in the future. Thanks for the review.
You do such a good job on your reviews. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thank goodness there's a manual adjustment dial.
Shark Tank voice: It's an interesting idea, but just not practical unless they're available in prescription if you don't have contacts or perfect vision.
I'll give you the 500k you're asking for, but I want 33.3% (I watch that show too much) 😆
I was thinking the same thing! I have pretty bad light-sensitivity, so these would be a super cool thing for me so I don’t have to switch between glasses, or deal with too-dark lenses when it’s not as bright out, etc. Or wait for my UV-tint-glasses to clear up when I go inside. But I have prescriptions and don’t wear contacts. So they’re not really an option for me.
These glasses are really interesting and can see the potential, but for that reason I'm out.
-Barbara
Excellent review as always! Are there any restrictions on cleaning them?
We need these in Las Vegas for sure! Thanks again for a great review.
Hi,
I don’t normally leave a comment but I thought I would. I watch a lot of reviews online but if I want a true and honest opinion about a product I’ll come to your channel. I think you offer a great honest opinion after thoroughly reading instructions on the product. Not everyone does. Keep up the good work. Hi Bailey
I love the double-handed gesture for "Hi mom, I'm calling from my car!" So true! 🤣
These are the coolest sunglasses I’ve ever seen lmao, I need this tech in my prescription shades
You said there’s a no audio version, right? It seems to me that the no audio version with just the changeable tint makes more sense. The changeable tint is the big feature, so just feature it. That’s the one I would get.
I have these- I backed them on Indiegogo, I have the mirrored ones. They work great- really good when driving into tunnels or your garage- and for those times around dawn and dusk when you need sunglasses, but you don't need really dark ones yet. I would agree with everything he says... for me, the audio is not something I really use very often. The only time I use it is when my family goes on a road trip that requires us to get going in the wee hours of the morning... My family falls asleep in the car, and I can listen to a podcast without bugging everyone. Overall, I really like these- but I paid the super early bird price... not sure how I would feel paying the full amount now.
Definitely would like these. I recently got Lasik done and my eyes are adjusting still even inside lights bother me and I don't want to wear really dark ones inside. It just takes awhile for them to heal. Always been sensitive to light though.
Awesome concept! Geeky look for right now.. I am sure that they will improve! I will try when it gets cheaper.
Essentially these are controllable solar cell welding goggles
I've made something similar with one of those welding LCD panels, awesome that someone came up with a design that makes it look stylish
I live in South Florida I'm actually going to look into getting a pair. Thanks for the review.
Pretty awesome technology. I'd consider them in a different frame maybe. I really don't like flat lenses. I like a more curved wrap style. Nothing worse than seeing your own eyes staring back at you.
Not to mention if the sun is behind you, it reflects off the inside of the lenses into your eyes.
Different styles would be nice. Hopefully this becomes more available with other companies and the price goes down.
Wonder wether the technology would work in wraparound lenses.
I in the uk and I own reactor-light prescription glasses which means they change colour, outside, in the sun and depend on the high levels of UV to how dark they go. Once back inside they change back to normal clear glass. Not sure whether these are just a novelty item, especially for the price. Great review though xxx
Prescription glasses with insurance vs these which are not. I'd say the price isn't terrible.
@@playerroku4412 as I am from the uk I wouldn’t know, all I can say is my prescription glasses were less than these and that included my reactor-lights, which I use everyday, plus a reading pair.
I would consider the dusk lite's but there is no option for prescription lenses so this wouldn't be of much use to me. Still kind of cool though.
Just adding that most of my high-end sunglasses have that gradient. The idea is that the brightest rays are coming from above so it evens out. If you wear them long enough you don't even notice
I was also thinking that the lighter gradient at the bottom can make it easier to look down and read something, like a menu outside, etc.
Wonder how the mic sounds in these sun glasses? In heavy winds and such. But as always, great review!
I was just thinking what if they had something like this... sick!
People may think that's a lot for sunglasses, but I pay a lot for prescription sunglasses. I would love to be able to change the tint on my prescription glasses that is so cool!
You can get reactive lenses that darken when you go out into the sun, and lighten when in artificial light for a fraction of the cost
@@Volaths I had those years ago when they first came out. Transition lenses, and I didn't care for them. Half the time they would still be dark for a while after going from outside to inside. Maybe they have gotten better today, but I would love something like this where I could just push a button and they automatically change. First world problems, I know 😜
@@bradasstv Fair enough man! Whatever works for you, these are really cool don't get me wrong but I can't justify the price if there's not a prescription option
@@Volaths I totally agree 👍
@@bradasstv They've gotten much faster, now, takes apparently 35-60 seconds to change (tho I'm so used to them I don't notice).
I would buy these just for the tinting factor and adjustment. I feel like any glasses audio is still so new and won’t sound very good for years to come. But being able to change shade darkness yes 🤙
I don't think it has anything to do with years of development. Audio engineering is extremely well understood at this point. The reality is just that you cannot put large drivers in a tiny sunglass arm. It's just a matter of bumping up against physics.
Considering you life in Las Vegas where it’s super sunny and I’m in Perth, Western Australia where it’s also ridiculously sunny and super intense sun, even in winter dark glasses outside are more then fun and you’d just never have a use or a need for going for the lighter shades
Just in case it hasn't been said in a while, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the importance you place on reading the included directions. Few things are more frustrating than seeing someone misuse an item and then claim it doesn't work, especially when it's something you know how to use properly. Ha!
Does it take battery to keep the tint you want on? Like if they die does the tint go back to the lightest setting?
So what happens when the battery discharges? Do they come in prescription models too?
I have issues it’s a wide nose bridge. This causes almost any plastic frame to sit too high and I can usually fit my finger between the glasses frame and my nose bridge. Although these are really interesting I probably would never consider then because of this.
Can the tint levels be adjusted by using the button only and not having the app? Do they have options for prescription lenses? Can you take calls on them? If so, how does it sounds on the receiver’s end?
Way better looking than those alien bicycle glasses you always wear!!!
I pray one day we can get freaking reviews every day 🙏
Does the tint turn off if the charge depletes while you are out? Or is it stuck at the tint it was set to?
What about power glasses?does it comes with the power glasses??
What was the Rayban size? I wear Rayban wayfarer 55 size. As I learned from customer servise, dusk is 48. I am asking because I try to understand if the dusk size fits me. I m thinking of ordering it from US to Greece
Another great review
I can't remember if it was mentioned but they come in a navy color with teal inside the frame.
I liked the automatic adjustment of the old technology changeable tint glasses. Also, the color seemed to pop more with the Ray Ban's.
Really enjoyed your review. I'd have never thought about spending that much money on sunglasses (I've lost untold count of $20 sunglasses over the years to - whereverthehellIveleftthem - but the feature set AND - that they've got a finder feature makes me more likely to buy something like this. I DO like the tinting feature a LOT. there are days when i'd like lesser tint and having options is an almost-instasell. Thanks again!
At level 4 you look like Roy Orbison lol!...🤓 great review James 👏
A Question can you get them with prescription lens? I used to drive taxi's and there were times of the day where being able to adjust the tint would of been great.
No they don't unfortunately. Try transitions. Non electronic. I can't exactly remember how they work.
Great review
Have you done a review on like water bottles specifically for water? if not I would like for you to review water bottles mainly for water cause I’m trying to look for a cheap water bottle but I don’t know what is worth my money
If I wear them at night with lightest setting can I still see trough properly?
I will say at 375 they would be one of my cheapest pair of sunglasses. I had a Pair of the Oakley O Rokr sunglasses back in the day. I found them to be a big waste of money. I don’t know if I would buy any sunglasses for listening to music for that reason but the adjustable tint is super cool.
Very Cool. I would buy them if I was a big sunglass person.
this is so cool
great review. you didn't mention what the lens material was made of, glass/plastic? and also how long does the charge last? does the battery supply power only for the audio and/or the tint as well. thank you
According to Ampere's website, the lenses are made of plastic. Just FYI, it is extremely rare to find glasses or sunglasses made of glass in the U.S. because they are very dangerous even in seemingly minor accidents -- getting hit in the face with a beachball could easily send you to the ER!
Chances are the lenses are plastic, the website says they're polarised TAC lenses, so pretty sure that's a form of plastic lens as that form is also used in kids sunglasses. Battery life is variable depending on if you use the audio functions, if you don't approximately 7 days with tint pairing. if you do, about 4 hours. So the battery powers both.
@@trogdorstrngbd sounds like a stupid reasoning, considering prescription glasses are made of glass.
@@tootzy-the-roll Not these days. They are made of polycarbonate, Trivex, and other related plastics. Just go to any eyeglass vendor's website and look at their choices for lens material. Glass is still the best choice for _very_ high prescriptions, but for most people (especially young to middle-aged) they are comparatively rare.
Those are really cool
Do these glasses protect from uv rays?
Dude! When showing through the lens, hold them still - and show the same area of sky when comparing them! Otherwise, it's not really comparing them.
And what about the Bose glasses you mentioned?
I've never been a big fan of attaching a radio transmitter to my head and wearing it all day long.
WHERE CAN YOU GET THE CHARGING CASE....CAN'T FIND ON AMAZON OR YOUR LINK.
How long does the charge last?
This is aweome!
Be cool when they do curved lenses and/or prescription.
I suppose in 20 years we'll not be looking through lenses anymore but rather viewing images projected directly onto our retinas. In that case we might be wearing glasses that look solid but have a bunch of tiny cameras all over that grab light at different frequencies. We'll be able to see UV and IR, maybe even radio, plus we could zoom and record just by thinking about it.
Switching to see someone's POV would also be pretty cool. They go on a hike and I see and hear everything they do, real-time.
Lmao the reaction tho @4:18
Will they stay dark all day? If you have to charge them during they day they aren't very useful.
Very similar to self dimming welding hoods. They are available for $50 or less
Expensive and doesn’t play music too well. But I want! Just so I can change the darkness on the glasses with my phone.
Great party trick and truly amazing technology, but... how often would you need to actually change the tint?
Really it depends on the day and activity. I could see myself changing it a lot throughout the day.
Could be really useful for prescription lenses, albeit monumentally expensive when you combine the two. I know right now switching between glasses when I forget to put on my sunglasses before I start driving is a bit precarious. Having one pair and no clip-on shade thing to worry about losing would be really nice.
@@danielleanderson6371 You can get transitions and other photochromic lenses for that, though. I use them every day.
I’m a UPS driver, and would potentially use it countless times a day going from the drivers seat to the back of the truck where it’s sometimes darker. Although I wish you could change it to only 2 settings, on/off. Set the tint to whatever your preference is, and be able to cycle it in and off with the button, instead of going through all 4 options.
@@TBB0LTZZ Having it be programmable through the app and saved on the sunglasses really should be a geature.
I need some safety glasses like these for work.
The black frames look like the "lowest bidder" style glasses the military provided in the 1960's and 1970's. They used to be called "birth control" glasses for a reason!
You did say that they were polarized, but specifically do they protect against UV-A and UV-B light? Do the Ray-Ban's have any protection against UV light? That would be my primary concern when buying sunglasses.
I think those would be more cool if they would darken automatically. Like when drivin into a tunnel they would remove the tint immediately.
I ordered some like 6 months ago and I just got them last week. I didn't even open the box till today. I thought I would never get them.
This tech is so cool! I've never heard of this. I hope this gets popular so the price can come down and I can buy one. I think the adjustability of the tint isn't as necessary but it's so cool lol
I would like to see it electronically and automatically adjust to light.
@@scorpionstingz4983 yup! That would be amazing. Smart watches can do it easily so it should be a pretty straightforward upgrade path development wise
You have photochromic lenses which aren't electronic and just react to the light to darken the lenses
@@TheGambleGame they only react to UV, so they don't work in all bright conditions
E-tint is the first photo electric auto tinting sunglasses. They came out about 2 to 3 years ago.
I'll assume those of us that wear prescription glasses are out of luck? Or with the $300 pricetag is that included? Or is there an upcharge but I can get them prescription? Just curious.
Is their next step , at 500k they will work on that
I don't love the style but the function is badass.
That style sunglasses suit u they look good on you
Interesting but some old school technology stuff just needs to be left alone..nice pair of glasses standard 70-100 dollars will last a life time..unless you lose them or break them..I'n that note I rather none of them but in the case i rather lose a cheaper price glasses 😆 great video as always 👍
Very cool tech
If they made them for my prescription Glasses I’m sold
Very cool! One thing seems Light should have no tint at all.
Why?
Reminds me of how active 3D glasses are working.
I do wish they got to "clear". My issue with Transitions wqa that in a bright office, they would always look like sunglasses. That price would only be worth it IF you could just wear them indoors and look like normal glasses. Especially if they were bkue-light blocking for working at a computer.
If they aren't prescription, why would you want to wear clear glasses inside? Just take the sunglasses off if you want "clear lenses" inside.
@@cantsay because then you don't need to take them off and find a place to keep them, or put them down and lose them while you go into businesses, or etc.
So, I'm 60ish and just had cataract surgery and am an avid motorcycle rider. Love the fact that I can buy $20 sunglasses again to ride. Do you think the Ampere sunglasses on their lightest mode would allow me to see at night on a bike?
big white guy in an overcoat big glasses. new hit movie from Cinemax.
Dear i tried to purchase dusk lite from ampere shop. 10 days are past amd they did not ship the product. Is it a scam website. They already charged the amount. Pls help
Can you please review slim can coolers 😀
Where are my shades? oh damn, on my head
Pretty cool technology. I couldn't care less about the audio feature, but the adjustable tint I like. I wouldn't spend $300 on them though.
I see this tech used in phone cameras in the future to simulate variable aperture/nd filters.
If this is the 90's brick cell phone moment, give it a few years and these will be the new Apple/Samsung tablets. Small hand remote with a draw pad for the thumb with a push down click. Won't THAT be a fun driver to deal with? haha...
What a time to be alive.
I do like how you can adjust them yourself, that is way cool.
However, beyond that I don't see much benefit that Transitions and similar coating don't already cover. I don't need to charge my eyeglasses, or pair to my phone to get the most from them. I can maybe see this type of tinting being good for windows, but I'd again still prefer it to be done automatically. I just can't see any benefit besides customization personally.
I've definitely experience times of the day or locations where one tint sunglasses didn't work well enough or worked to well. Example: driving slightly before dusk. Still enough sunlight to need sunglasses, but the one tint is too dark for that time of day and I just have to go without. I would appreciate the various tint levels.
💯 cool factor
This is similar tech to what Boeing uses on the 787 Jetliners tinting windows.
Is the gradient maybe because the sky is likely to be brighter, by default, than the ground? Either way...I kind of want these. A lot lol
I have a big wide nasal bridge. Most glasses don't come close to fitting around it. I can see that this frame is too small for your nose (which looks nice and unbroken). They're sitting too high and look more like welding goggles than sunglasses. For $300, I think they should fit and look nicer.
Welding helmets have had similar tech for years. They are clear until you start welding than they get dark automatically.
