Zastava has been making AK rifles in Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) since the 1960s, and today has a number of offerings made for the commercial market. One of the recent ones is the M90 (or more specifically, the PAPM90PS). This is a 5.56mm rifle fundamentally based on the M70 pattern. It uses Serbian magazines (not interchangeable with other types of 5.56mm AK magazine) and comes with a combination of modern Hogue and Magpul furniture as well as a left-side optics mounting rail. It does also include as 3-position gas regulator like on the Yugoslav M76. Several military M70 features have been removed for importation, including the bayonet lug and night sights.

Slight correction, all the way down on an AK safety lever is traditionally semi auto, and the middle position is full auto. But it obviously doesn't matter if it's a semi only trigger so it looks like the factory has decided that you didn't need the long throw. That's a thoughtful touch!
Oh, and speaking of the thoughtful safety, you can leave it on safe and pull the charging handle. The extractor will come back far enough to eject the chambered round but not far enough to pick up the next one still in the magazine, so you can clear a Zastava rifle without dropping the mag or turning the safety off. The Serbs put some serious engineering into their designs!
@@rediius now that is a pretty cool feature.
Was hoping someone would point this out.
Yeah, I always liked the philosophy of- "If I need full auto, I need it NOW! (1 st position after safe)" If I have the time, semi-auto will wait.
@@michaelnolan6054 it's actually the exact opposite. Semi is all the way down because it isn't a fine motor movement, it's just a full push. Full-auto in the middle is intended to be a deliberate action. The idea was that a soldier under pressure wouldn't accidentally engage full auto, as full auto is usually not the best solution and will make a panicked solider waste ammo, making them more likely to end up with an empty weapon at the worst possible time.
The empty cases looked like they were being ejected on an arc that will take them close to the ISS.

"A bit overgassed" yeah, it's WHIPPING those cases across the range.
Honestly, my NPAP M70 whips cases across the range as well lmao.
Same with mine. Even on setting 1...
Good thing its got an adjustable gas block
Honestly it just has very aggressive extractor, it doesn't even have to be very over gassed to do that. I practice with snap caps indoor with my m90, just pulling the charging handle back to eject one will launch it across my living room into the ceiling, and I am not slamming it back to be clear, it just has a insane ejection system. There is a downside though, the really aggressive extraction tends to dent up cases, not good if you reload, but on the flip side, very reliable and isn't going to have failures to eject.
OMG!!! ANOTHER ZASTAVA VIDEO! BEST TWO WEEKS EVER!
I bought an M90 a few weeks ago and it has quickly became my Favorite AK. After break in you can run it on Gas setting 1 all the time and it is extremely soft shooting. Classic example of what stereotypes are doing to the peoples understanding of the physical world. The AK is just another rifle that happens to be widespread, because it is simple and cheap. However, there is other firearms that supass its reliability.
Zastava AK guns were also called a female “gypsy”. In Yugo wars back in early 1990’s, we (Croats) were all looking to get hand on Serbian AK as it was extremely reliable compared to Romanian and Hungarian AK 47 versions. If you would shoot two full magazines from either Romanian or Hungarian and press the barrel against the wall, the barrel wall band. That was not the case with the Serbian model. Later in the war we got some guns from Argentina and (East) Germany and a few other countries but nothing of that beat the reliability of AK models.
This is the truth to AK. The good ones are the best guns in their niche. The bad ones are so bad it goes thru funny into dangerous.
I may kinda upset someone, but coming also from a former "commie land". We considered everything Yugo, as to almost with a par with the Western stuff.
You got quite a lot of Yugo AK from Slovenia back in late 91 and also in the 92. I personally saw few shipment thru Macelj and Dubrava.
Croatia itself had also a lot of Yugo AK in warehouses for the home guard units unfortaly Croatian government allowed Yugoslav military to size them back in the 1990 early 1991. Majority of those guns was later (2012/13) shipped from Croatia to the Syria on the US request.
@@altergreenhorn My father was in Vukovar and he says officers from both sides used to sell each other shit by the truckload.
That's because AKM pattern guns have thin barrels to save weight. It's considered a good tradeoff on any modern rifle. Zastava kept the old AK pattern barrels which are closer to LMG or sniper rifle barrels.
I'm quite sure it is overgassed by design -when it gets a bit clogged and dirty, it'll run perfectly.
yeah, just put a few thousand of those wolf steel cases though it, itll start to break in!
@@mtnbound2764 Brass only. For reasons unknown, it really hates steel.
To me steel just runs a little dirtier because brass creates a way better seal and doesn't leave nearly as much residue so I think over time the steel casings end up clogging it a bit.

@@AP-qs2zf If you can make something better, go on.
Never been a fan of relying on US made magazine parts for 922(r) compliance. Even though I've never heard of anyone getting jammed up by 922(r) because they used the "wrong" magazine from their stash.
(For that matter, I don't recall hearing of any cases where an individual ran into 922(r) enforcement, unless the charge was added as a cherry on top of a while cornucopia of other gun charges and they happened to find out he had too many "scary imported parts" after they'd already siezed the gun for the other violations. AFAIK, that particular code section has only been used to force importers and distributors to change configurations, or as an easily disposable "plea bargain" charge to add leverage to the prosecution in pressure a plea deal.)
I asked Ian about this on a previous video and he said he'd never heard of anyone getting strung up for it either. Does seem like a kitchen sink sort of scenario is the only one.
It's a sales thing, the BATFE only demands 9.22r compliance from the importer. My 5.45 ACE came with a Magpul magazine that will never be taken out of its wrapper.
The mags are made in Serbia by Tora, so that's not it

Owning one of these rifles, I can attest to the fact that most 5.56 AK magazine will infact work. Bulgarian, Romanian WASR3/SAR3, AC Unity, Polish WBP and Beryl etc. The only mags I found to not work are Chinese and Promag
I got one of these last week, only 180 rounds through it so far (brass case, half 5.56, half 223). Accuracy is as good as me with irons, mine is straight, requiring only a slight adjustment of the front sight to zero. It's also been 100% reliable on gas setting 2 with both a steel mag and the included plastic mag. I think Ian's problems are with that mag, seems like a lemon. I agree it's over gassed, haven't tried setting 1 yet but setting 2 seems too much. The manual recommends setting 3 for the first few hundred rounds, which for mine is certainly excessive though maybe not with Tula 223. I might have to copy Ian and get the wood furniture, very pretty like that :).
Small update, put another 60 rounds through it yesterday on setting 1 without bothering to clean it after the last 180. It ran fine, 0 malfunctions and was far softer shooting. Shot 5.56 only this time. Once again I used brass cased, since brass is currently cheaper than steel due to people being dumb.
They seem like great rifles, but the magazines also seem like they are a consistent point of failure. Would be interested in what you think about the steel mags for them.
Do Arsenal mags work in them? What about AC Unity?
@ They also have a clear version
@@toddbrooks515 there are some videos here on CZcams that test arsenal and beryl mags in this rifle and from those I've seen, those mags work but are a little tight but seem to work just fine. I'd do some more research on them first though

Yes some units, mainly paratroopers, used confiscated Sturmgewers after WWII. The Germans had left a lot of equipment and it was used by Yugoslav army
From what I've heard,a number of STG44 rifles were captured by the Yugoslav partisans at the end of WW2,and they were later used by the 63rd paratrooper battalion of the Yugoslav army until the 1980s when they were replaced by the M70 (Yugoslav version of the AK),Yugoslavia then sold them to some countries in the middle east.

When the bolt is held open by the follower can it be locked in position by flipping the safety on? If so it would simplify removing the spent mag and dropping the bolt on a new mag.

I've never been a fan of tactical accessories. This firearm with wood furniture gives it a more classic look. When Ian shouldered the firearm it became apparent how the folding stock would be an issue with a southpaw. Aside from a few small hiccups at the end, this looks to be a well-made firearm. For me, the only thing I would change would be the rear sight from a notch to a Mojo peep sight.
Unfortunately, where I live, the AK platform plus the AR platform are banned from civilian ownership. Oh well, sucks to be me.
Ian…How did you not mention the M90 NP that takes AR mags
when giving the history of M90 imports?
To be fair, the M90NP was imported in incredibly small numbers. It's very likely that the entirety of the M90NP production totaled less than 2000 units.
An AK without wooden furniture is like borscht without a dollop of sour cream, it's still an AK but it's nowhere near as good.
I think SAG AKs are great, they are a Russian company who clearly gets it and makes modern usable AKs for athletes and LE/military users alike.
From a practical perspective for me the basic furniture on AKs is usually a little too short not to have something like a ZenitCo hand guard and stock to help extend the length of pull but that's all dependent on intention and training I suppose. Wood furniture does look pretty dope though
But does it have a glory hole for a cleaning kit??
Yugo follower is so good at locking the bolt open that it did so before the gun was empty!

Is it true that these Zastava guns lack a chrome-lined barrel for more accuracy but less resistance to wear? I heard it once but I'm not entirely sure
The old NPAPs and OPAPs definitely didn't. But the literature for the newer ZPAPs says they're chromed.
Older 7.62 Zastava AKs did lack chrome lining, however the 5.56 ones have always had it and newer 7.62 have chromed bores.
@@andrew2353 yay!

Tell us how you really feel, Ian.
I kept the Hogue Forend and put a Walnut stock to evoke Valmet aesthetics. Very nice 5.56 AK and I’m happy to see you do a video on them!
Mid-West Industries also makes an excellent scope mount that is designed to fit a Kalashnikov rail mount.
I was wondering, what if you make a cutout in a safety lever in the place where the follower holds the bolt open, wouldnt you be able to engage the safety reload the mag and then drop the bolt with the safety?
