I was a professional locksmith for 40 years and my most treasured tools were the ones I built myself to do that one job. Early in my career I could not afford the specialty tools, so I made them myself. This also allowed me to complete the work quickly without having to wait for a special order to arrive. This is a particularly satisfying video, thanks.

Enjoyed the solution. Del. On a good note, the ST started because I traced back my work and realized I was suffering a mental lapse and hadn’t plugged the darn cam pulse sensor back in. Not one of my finest moments but the bike fired right away and runs better than ever. The bike gods took mercy on me. I was worried I had somehow messed up the timing after reinstalling the cams and had wrecked something.
Onwards and upwards!
Sure thing buddy, I've been exactly there too in the past, when I put the Hayabusa back together I spent half an hour head scratching why it wouldn't fire up, spinning over till it almost flattened the battery, then found a tiny grey plug that was the power feed to the fuel injection... click, vroom! Followed by copious self kicking...! We've all been there buddy!

Hi Del, just binge watched the 833 series, after getting home on tuesday from hospital after triple bypass open heart surgery. I’m not in a good place mentally at the moment apparently part of post major surgery shock and something like 6 plus hours of Anaesthetise. so just to watch the basic bike strip was very therapeutic, not upto belly pan mods and fabrication. which i normally love. 14 weeks before i can ride again to allow chest to properly bond back. my surgeon was a biker knew i was in good hands. 😂

Sir you have my respect and sympathy.. my small stent surgery last year was minor compared to your marathon, and if your stay in hospital was anything like mine, you'll be getting precious little meaningful rest, lights on and noise all night, and woken every few hours for observations... so in some very small way i can say, i know how you must be feeling... There is also what i heard called the "Post cardiac blues".. all the "why me", and "Will i survive this" etc etc... but if i can offer you any small solace at all my friend, it is that those feelings will pass, and you will feel well, safe and stable in time.. So take care or yourself and know that these bad times are temporary, listen to the birds sing, watch the sunrise, and you'll be mending every day.. It is an honour indeed that our videos can be of use and contribute in some way to your recovery.. thank you for your kind words of support.. @@Moonfleet41 HI Del, after many months of recovery, not helped by Beverley & I getting covid I'm back out on the scoot (06 VN900) after her being mothballed for over 11 months, she was given service and check over,, That was a laugh as you can imagine scars still healing - sternum chop healed, but still swear word sore. busy doing my Rehabilitation exercise classes got my strength back up enough to get her to the MOT station and she Passed her MOT with no issues,. I have been out a couple of times just for an hour each time, softly, softly catches the monkey. I am now able to crack two-hour trips with no issues, the best medicine I have had since the bypass.
Elegantly simple and suitable, love it. I've only ever seen the insides of a Japanese M/C clutch as well, so this is all very interesting to watch, as it's all new to me. Thanks!

Del, if you're planning to reuse the clutch, make sure to get rid of that grenade plate in the middle. First one gave up about 6.000 km after I bought the Sportster, no idea how many miles it had done previously. Dealership replaced it with an original clutch with the same grenade plate, as I was a begginer and didn't know I didn't need to replace that plate. 7.000 km later, same plate died. I then bit the bullet and swapped for a Barnett extra plate clutch, and hopefully nobody will need to open the clutch again in until long after I'm dead, as I'm sure this engine will still be running by then. :))
Nevermind, somehow I missed the previous video, I just noticed it now. Was wondering why you wouldn't make a video with dissasembling the primary case. :)
Nice one Del , I made a tool from 50mm plastic pipe collar for fitting fork seals on my breakout , worked a treat!

Some awesome tools to make the custom tool. Well done my friend. This will probably sound silly but what really got my attention was the springy center punch. 40+ years in the mechanical trades and I've never seen one of those. 😊 Can't wait for the next episode. Little tip on diaphragm spring. Use a oil filter cup wrench that fits and the nut fits in.
So how do you then get to the spring clip inside it?

You got that right brother, you roll in to four figures on the parts bill in the first few days and it just keeps going!... it's easy buying the big parts, like pistons kits, but constant little things, like gaskets, fluids and materials, just add up constantly, so any money you can save is always a benefit! Ok so I tried this and overtightened the nut and pulled the clutch adjustment screw through the bearing. I’ve just replaced the bearing with a new one and I’m about to try it again but I’m worried about putting pressure on it again. It wasn’t anywhere close to releasing the tension to unclip the circlip. Is there another way to release it other than using the bearing as a leverage point?

Hi.
I am struggling a little bit with the tool. I have made 2 and still don’t work.
I have a 6mm thick steel flat bar with a 8mm hole drilled in the centre and 20mm long soil pipe.
After a couple of turns the metal bar starts bending and the PVC pipe starts de forming. I really don’t know what else to do. Also, the nut will only screw on to about 5 threads before getting tight.
If it works, then it’s good enough aye fella. Good job.
Exactly that brother, use what you have, adapt and overcome!

Its kinda funny. I have a 96 model Hugger that i was going to sell as i own a Road King also but i cant bring myself to sell the Sporty. Its so much more fun than the lumbering oaf of a Road King.
This Sportster series might have a blame in that as it kinda rekindled my interest in the good old Sporty :D

Hi buddy, if your Harley clutch is playing up, then obviously check the other stuff first before you go stripping the primary cover off... cable freeplay, and then clutch pack freeplay, plus of course make sure the oil is fresh in the primary and see if that cures it before you go stripping the clutch out... it's very rare they play up, or wear out, unless you have super high mileage! Good luck with it.

I had to replace the clutch on my sportster once. The middle steel, the one with the rivets in it, exploded. Took out the clutch basket and everything. Cost me a good $1200 to have it all replaced.
Thats a shame, was your bike standard or tuned in some way..?
@@Moonfleet41 it was tuned and had cams. I bought it used so that was already done. The only thing that the previous owner had not done was the Screamin eagle clutch.

@@Moonfleet41 it was a fun bike. I sold it to get a Dyna because the sportster was not comfortable for the wife. I sold the sportster back to the guy I bought it from for the same price a couple years after buying it and bought my 06 Dyna for the same price so it was a pretty good deal. If I could have I would have kept the sportster and just added the Dyna but can’t afford two.

Love the clutch tool. I've made many "specialist" tools for the spotster engine I'm building. The idea on my channel is to show people that they don't have to spend hundreds of £££ on them.

What size pipe did you use?
It works on the stock spring, but if you go to a heavier spring, it doesn't work so good
Indeed, you would then need the heavy duty dedicated tool!
@@Moonfleet41 your method/tool, worked perfectly, that was a great tip, but I did the extra plate kit with the heavier spring, i drag race my 99 Sportster, 100hp/ 92ftlbs torque, 11.60sec @ 113mph, 1/4 mile, sure like your videos brother

Sure thing Alan, if I did this every day, I'd buy the tool as it'd be well worth it and as special tools go, £70 or so is really not that much, but when not likely to use it again for the foreseeable future, it's good to save the money...!
