Great Video, unlike all the other videos on here about replacement of the clutch pack is you showed and discussed your trouble shooting and what you were trying to diagnose. Thank you
Really great videos! I have the shop manual for my '01 XL, but your videos showing 'hands on' procedures bring it all to real life and will certainly help when I get into a project. Great stuff!
Great job with this video. Just watched the same video from a more commercial garage, and wanted to watch another just to get a second perspective. Loved your commentary. I always appreciate the insights of an experienced back yard hobbyist. There's a big shift in the care and precision of your work when you're not on the clock, and it's your baby you're working on rather than your 3rd project of the day. I also really liked that you didn't edit the video down. For example, I got to watch your struggle with the retaining ring removal, as I surely will when I attempt it for the first time. Not only does that give me a chance to see exactly what worked and what didn't work, but it gives me a red flag that when I get to that part I should really slow down and make sure I don't force it "because it just popped right out when the professional did it". Again, great job! Thanks for the walkthrough!
Use spare bolts with the heads cut off as assembly dowels when you put primary or cam covers on , way easier and you won't damage a gasket or have it fall off while trying to put the cover on.
Very informative! Sure did enjoy watching your video. I have a 2014 sportster XL1200 and I bel;ieve I can do it from just watching video once. Thanks for your efforts and help, Jesus loves you, John 3:16-17 (KJV)
Thanks for the informative video. I’m waiting for an energy one that’s on the way from Hammer Performance. 34,000 on my sporty and I should have gotten rid of the stock grenading clutch a long time ago. Xena from the XL Forum. (-:
I love your recent how to videos. I've been wanting to build my 2015 Iron but its something that just keeps getting put off. Maybe this winter I'll have the time!
Harley Davidson Racing I believe it. Its hard to imagine I'll be more than doubling the power output! Depending on what other projects I start this winter I should be able to build the engine. Right now I'm fixing one of my cars and the bike is helping to serve as transportation for a little while.
Harley Davidson Racing great video thanks a ton,,,. Can I add one extra clutch fiber or one extra clutch Steel to my existing clutches that's a little worn,,. To get more pressure less slippage, ???
Sweet can’t wait to get my new clutch in, so a couple years back I cleaned out my primary case. I mixed blots up and pulled threads out of one of the holes. I got it to bite enough then to stay in but I doudt this time it will. You think a heli coil will be alright. I ask because the hole has to be drilled out a little, do you think there’s enough material to be alright. It’s bottom lower bolt closer to back wheel.
Hey Ryan thank you for watching and the comment! I use heli coils when needed. The other option of welding, re-drilling and tapping is a lot of work and the welding can be messy.
How many miles did you have between clutch packs ? What kind of riding do you do city traffic , short rides open roads country rolling hills , drag race . I have used Barnett the last 20 years going with Energy one for the first time . have 80,000 miles on my bike stock clutch . rebuilding the Trans and changing out the clutch bearing and all the other bearings . even though everything is tight . Rebuilt the engine last year . they say 100 thousand miles I get about 80 and rebuild I ride Hard .
I'm no motorcycle mechanic, cars and boats yea. But I saw something, to me, needs replacing. The primary chain had a lot of slack in it. Is this normal for racing purposees? I have never seen, in my limited experience, that much slack in a primary chain. Most of the bikes I've seen are 2006 and newer. Please elaborate. Thanks. A very infomative video for me!
Hi Jeff and thanks for watching and the question. The primary chain tensioning shoe is in the primary cover in this model Sportster and it was removed for the video and when you have to work on the clutches with XL's. When you replace the cover the shoe then puts tension on the chain and the slack is removed to approximately 5/8". Thank you!
Very nice video. I have a 1997 sporster. You look like you know your way around bikes. Do you think that if I just change my pipes, spark plugs, spark plugs wires and adjust my carb, I could maje a bit more horsepower?
nice video mate.. i plan on changing the clutch plates and springs on my sportster dragbike aswell... i will only be running around 100hks if everything goes as planned so it wount be nessesary.... How do you like this setup? you tryed it yet?
Hello and thank you for watching and the comments! I do like the Energy One extra plate clutch setup. You have to remember to readjust it after the first use to take out the slack from new wear. It holds well on my 125 HP XL.
goddam melbourne shitheads running empty buses through the street s of melbourne caused me to burn the clutch on my only investment , now i have to become a mechanic overnite . you saved my ass with this video . friend 4 life
Janessa Richards , if you do not drain the oil before removing the outer cover it will dump all over the place pour 38 oz on the floor watch it run . you still get dripping under the clutch and compensating nut , I use old blue jeans lay under the primary to catch the dripping .
Is the energy one clutch still working well? I've been trying to decide on either an energy one kit or a barnett.. You got way more HP then either of my sportys, so if it lasts in your bike it definitely will in mine haha
Hey JT thank you fro watching! The Energy One is still working and it is a good clutch. I am not really sure but someone told me that the Energy One and the Barnett are the same made clutches so I thenk you should be good with either one of them....Mark
Ditch that Barnett Idea and fix your clutch! I just fixed my old HD 2006 Sportster clutch and spring plate problem and my bike runs better and shifts better than ever. How did I do it? I removed the pack of plates, found the exploded spring plate took it apart and kept the two steel rings. I then lined the two up as perfect as possible. I offset the original holes for the brass fasteners leaving no see-through holes. I took my MIG welder and tacked the smaller of the holes on both sides with about 4-second bursts tacking the two steel plates together. I then took my angle grinder and dressed them. I filed the ears so that the plate would mount like the single steel plates nice and smooth. I filed the inside of the basket where the damage was left by the original plate making sure no plates would hang up on any of the damaged areas. I then installed new fibers with the old steels making sure that the welded pressure plate would be "past" the damaged area when installed. I then put it all back together and took it for a ride. WOW! It shifted smoother quieter and grabbed very well. It was a trial thing and am I glad I did it. The only size difference is the thin springs that were between the two steel rings are gone and it had no effect... except a GREAT shifting clutch now!
harleys my favorite !! how many peaces has a clutch of a harley? i was counting the peaces you were pull out ,and i said what the heck? are all clutches of a harley so complicated?? wow
@@motorcycleridingandrepair1627 im buying a energy one kit for my 97 sporster...one kit is like yours one has a spring disc...i noticed you have not the spring disc at least from what i could see. Whats the spring disc for?
If I'm not mistaken these are what everyone in the business call's "Steels" not Plate so if ever your talking to another Harley motorhead try using the terminology they recognize like Clutches & steels like in the automatic transmission business ... You will NEVER hear a transmission man call steels & Clutches Fiber's & Plates .. I'm just trying to help you out bro.. Much like you will NEVER EVER hear a real motor head say Pontiac BIG BLOCK ... So as I cannot listen to you call them fibers any longer I'm going to NOT watch the rest ..

Hi Rick! I do not think that you can just add one. all of the plated must be thinner in order to add and extra plate.
Good video, do you run a total loss ignition? i dont see a stator in there. What kind of mods have you done to the bike for drag racing.
What fluid to run with the new clutch? Formula+?
Awesome. LOve the channel. Could you do a how to on carb jetting?
Hi Brandon and thank you for watching. Let me think about how I might do that. What type of a carb do you have?

Did you have to drain the oil first?
I’m not sure if my bike needs a simple replace or if the damn thing blew up inside
Look at that fucking chain .. Was very fortunate too have Phil Howell of Denver to build my 883 into 1250 racing engine . God Bless Him RIP !

Jeff Tilghman there is no tension on the chain untill you put the primary back on and adjust the chain guide ..

Gettin' close to time for a chain, maybe?
I need to replace my Xr sportster primary chain, what’s the best make to buy? 👍🚀
J&P parts would handle them and they would work just fine.
I don't understand where is the extra fiber Disc Go
Daaaaaaa!!!
harleys my favorite !! how many peaces has a clutch of a harley? i was counting the peaces you were pull out ,and i said what the heck? are all clutches of a harley so complicated?? wow
Hello Tassos! This is an extra plate Energy One clutch so there is one extra plate and friction disk. I think there are 8 disks and 9 plates.
