✂️Making My 1st Lolita Dress! | Re-creating A.P's 'Lovely Tartan JSK' ❤️ (Lolita DIY)

  • Hello Everyone! ❤️
    In todays video I share the process of how I made my very first handmade lolita JSK! I attempted to recreate an existing dress by the lolita fashion brand Angelic Pretty called the ‘Lovely Tartan JSK’ that I came across on Lacemarket last summer. At the time the listing for this dress on Lacemarket was set at $200 +shipping and looking at the dress as someone that can sew, I just felt like I could easily find all the materials needed to make this dress myself for much less than $200. So I did lol! I spent $60 in total on this D.I.Y and was able to make a dress that is exactly what I wanted for a fraction of the price!
    I really had a lot of fun making this dress and am super exited to share more of my D.I.Y lolita projects with you all in the future! Let me know what you think of this D.I.Y and also let me know if you’re interested in making some of your own lolita clothing! Or if you’ve already made some of your own pieces, what have you made so far? I’d love to read about it!
    Anyways, Thank you all again for watching and I’ll see you in my next video!

    For future if you haven’t figured it out yet, you can sandwich the bodice between the skirt and a sewn in pettieskirt 💕

  • @ceilingbattles
    @ceilingbattles Před 2 lety +105

    This turned out amazing! I've recently been sewing more dresses and I always get so tangled up in figuring out lining and hiding seams. (my favourite way I've seen recently to hide the waist seam allowance is to attach them all together with the complete bodice in between the skirt and skirt liner so its only visible if you lifted up the skirt but not the liner, if that makes sense)

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety +7

      Thank you so much!! 🥰 Also yess!! That was another method I had thought of doing which I think works just well, I just wish would have thought of doing it sooner lol 🙃 But there's also ways a next time, and next I make something with lining I'll try make sure to walk through my process a little bit more on the off chance it can help someone else avoid the mistakes I made.

    Yes! Lovely video! I love sewing videos and pockets of course. I now regret throwing out the old english GLB that came with full patterns when I moved in 2009. I have too many other sewing projects on the go right now, but it makes me wish that lolita brands would sell their fabric sort of like places like marimekko. I love so many prints, but skirts and jsks are always so short and I spend a lot of effort trying to find pieces that are below my knees and have pockets.

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety +4

      Thank you! I too love sewing videos and pockets 😂 lol! If you're interested in getting any of the GLB's or even the Otome no Sewing books to try and make your own lolita pieces, you can find them for a pretty decent price secondhand on places like Mercari, Rakuten, Frill or even on Lacemarket every so often. I purchased a listing on Mercari for just the GLB patterns a few months ago (last unboxing video) and it ended up being around $2 per pattern (I think I got 5) which I don't think is too bad. - Also that's definitely the benefit of making your own clothes, you're completely in control of everything so you never have to worry about whether or not something is going to fit you properly or have pockets!

    I'm a plus size lolita who loves bittersweet but it's incredibly difficult to find in my size. I went to a lolita swap meet and ended up meeting someone who had bought two ap skirts and combined them to fit her, dreamy doll room, she did an amazing job and it fit me perfectly However I don't enjoy wearing skirts so I'm planning to make the bodice of a jsk and attach the skirt to it. I'm very excited

    I clapped with glee when I saw the title of this video, and I absolutely delighted with everything you did. And as someone who has been overthinking attaching a skirt to a shirring panel, I am so, so happy that you talked about ways to do it.

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety +3

      Ahh ❤️ I'm so glad you liked it!! Also next time I make something with back shirring, I'm going to take some time to walk through how I assemble that piece since I think it could be helpful to others who are trying to make their lolita pieces as well. It sucks that there isn't a lot of lolita related sewing content available on YT for people to reference, so if I can use my channel to contribute in that area I definitely will! Good luck on attaching your shirring panel! 🍀😊

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much!! And yes I did go the extra mile because I was too lazy to dust off and setup my serge at the time 😅 lol So I was really trying to make sure no raw edges were exposed which is what ended up happing on the back panel, hence the reason I didn't like it. Again I did end up finding a solution to keep the back from fraying like crazy, I just would have liked it a lot better if I had through through how lining the lower part of the dress was going to work that way I could have avoided the raw edges showing in that particular area. Next time I make a JSK I'll try to remember to show you all what I'm talking about, on the off chance it can help someone else making their own JSK!

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety +1

      Normally to get even gathers I’d use 2 rows of gathering stitches but in this case both fabrics I used where kind of stiff which made them easy to gather. My recommendation would be to try using 2 rows of gathers next time as it works on well on most fabrics and keeps things from shifting around while you sew them.

      I promise it's a lot easier than it looks! It's really just about getting past your 1st project. Once you've made your first dress, blouse, pair of bloomers, etc. the process becomes a lot less overwhelming since you've done it once before and know what to do / not do. So even if you don't have a lot of experience, once you make your first project you can use all of the experience you gained and put it towards making an even better 2nd project! ❤️

    I'm a fairly beginner seamstress hobbyist and this summer I'm hoping to make a cosplay dress (+a plush prop that I'm working on right now just to get my sewing coordination back lol, look up pumpkin pie cookie run if you wanna see the character) and then once i get the hang of altering patterns, I'm gonna try to get my hands on an otome book or two(I currently only have simplicity 8444 😖 and I'm gonna have to alter it a good bit to fit and also look good but otome is just way too expensive to commit to for my current skill level). Anyways, great video, the dress is gorgeous and you look so cute in it and I love your voice and commentary regarding the process!💙💜💙💜

      Thank you so much!! Honestly the Otome no sewing books have been SO much fun to work from, so I really hope you do end up getting at least one book! Also good luck on your cosplay dress project! I looked up the character and she's sooo cute! She looks like a little poofy candycorn 🧡

    i have been thinking about making a recreation dress myself lately but i don’t know if i would have the skills it takes

    • @SewBlack
      @SewBlack  Před 2 lety

      Thank you!! Honestly it’s a lot easier than you think and regardless of your skill you’re the one who will be wearing it so it doesn’t need to be perfect and you can add or change whatever you want to make it exactly the way you want. Anyways, I hope you do try to make your own recreation, it’s a lot of fun! ❤️
