How to clean a smelly drain in shower or sink

  • Sink or shower drains often begin to smell badly over time. The horrible smell is the result of a smelly build up of sludge in the drain and accumulation of gunk and debris that stick to the sides of the drain pipe walls.
To clean the drain and stop the bad smell, we use a long flexible handle brush bigger than the inside diameter of the drain pipe. You can find it on amazon.
    Vikan 53703 Soft Tube Brush:
    amzn.to/3WMBfI2
    Vikan 53703 Tube Brush,2.4",PP/PBT,Blue
    amzn.to/3YfjIsA
We demonstrate how to give the drain walls a thorough scrubbing all the way down and into the trap.
After a complete scrubbing, we then add baking soda and vinegar into the drain for a second cleaning. That bubbles and fizzes for a few minutes before a final rinse. To keep your drains odor free, it is best to repeat this process every three months or more often as needed
The entire process to clean the shower drain only takes a few minutes. To get rid of the smelly sewer odor in a sink drain, you will first have to remove the stopper in the drain to provide access for the brush.

As someone who cleans drains regularly - good Lord man wear gloves. Drains are the nastiest, most bacteria-ridden places in a home. That smell you dislike? Its bacteria. You might live to regret that drain debris splattering up all over you that just so happens to land on a shaving wound on your face or a paper cut on your hand. If you are concerned with cleaning the drain in an environmentally-friendly manner, use Simple Green. That's my usual go-to for shower drains or floor drains. Pour it in, let it sit in the trap for 10 minutes, then scrub the drain, repeat as required, and flush with scalding hot water. Problem solved.

Hi House. I want to say thankyou to this video. This brush is a game changer. I didn't use the one you recomended because I'm in Taiwan. I had to order something local. I tried just baking soda and vinger, like other youtubers recommended. It kind of worked, but still had a little bit of sewage smell. As soon as I scrubbed the tube with a brush, the smell has gone. Sometimes baking soda and vinger just isn't enough. I don't think bleach would work either. You had to scrub it. The only issue with my one is, it's a little bit short lol

We have the same kind. It just snaps on and off (sometimes takes some effort). You won't be able to run a brush down there without taking it off, so you're relying too much on the vinegar/baking soda to do the heavy lifting. All drain covers should come off.

    • @Housebarons

Hmm. Not sure. Check the aerator - see if it’s clogged ( those are pretty simple to replace. )
Also check your sink overflow - temporarily put tape over the hole by the upper edge of the sink. ( this hole allows water to drain so your sink won’t overflow if the drain gets stopped) .
With the tape over it, does the smell disappear? It may be letting drain smells to come up that way. If so, you may need to take the drain pipe and p-trap off and give everything a good cleaning.
      Hope that helps!

The ammonia smell is likely from hair that hasn’t been removed … maybe the drain cleaner will help?
But honestly, the brush / scrub is really worth trying - to scrub the sides and bottom of the p-trap. If you’ve ever removed one, you’d see an incredible build up of rot and gunk.
Worst case and most expensive - replace the p-trap . But I would try to scrub it out first as that really should help.

When you mix baking soda and vinegar together, the chemical reaction isn't actually cleaning anything - it may loosen things up a little, but it's not cleaning. It's actually converting back to water. You'd actually be better off pouring undiluted vinegar down the drain and let it sit for a few hours, then follow up with hot water. All the baking soda is doing is neutralising the vinegar.

      @Housebarons  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Michael,
In spite of its purpose, the toilet should be basically odor free ( once clean w/ typical toilet bowl cleaner)
If you are getting a sewer / sewer gas smell that can’t be tackled by bowl cleaner, then the most likely culprit is a broken / detached wax seal.
It is not the most fun job, but it is pretty simple.
Rather than replace the wax seal with another wax seal, we use the wax free fluidmaster seal.

@@beardedbjorn5520 What do you think is down there. Anaerobic bacteria makes the smell. Unless you have a cut or something gloves are probably not necessary since you really don't come into contact with anything nasty. I'd be more worried about aerosolizing the bacteria and breathing it.

We just bought a house and the master bathroom shower smells like BO! I have tried baking soda, boiling water, and very expensive drain cleaners. The smell is still there, any suggestions?

    • @Housebarons

      Hey Richelle
Is the tub and shower separate or share the same drain ? I would check every drain in the bathroom. If the house was empty for awhile, the water that sits in the bottom of the” p-trap” can evaporate and let sewer gases into the room.
You should be able to see water deep down the drain at the bottom of each drain. That water is designed to always be there as a barrier to stop sewer gases from getting past that water barrier.
Another thing to check is to make sure all drains are free of hair buildup. That can be a stinky mess that sits in the drain. The drain may still drain okay, but a mess of hair in there could cause bad smells.
You can get a “ plumbing snake “ from a rental equipment place. That will be able to break-up any buildup that might harbor bad smells.
      Hope that helps.
      Thx for watching!

@@Housebarons hi, same problem here. House has been empty for 4 years and shower in en suite stinks terribly. How to replace the water that evaporated ? Just running water isn't doing it at all 😭...

Check to see if the smell is coming from the toilet base, you may need to replace the wax ring. I have a shower drain issue due to the bathtub draining and siphoning the p trap water down enough to cause the sewer smell. Just need to run the shower 30 seconds or so after draining tub to fill ptrap back up

Have you guys scrubbed the pipes yet, like how House mentioned in the video with the brush. That was the biggest game changer to the smell. You can use all types of cleaners but if you don't scrub, the smell will remain there.
