There are exceptions, for example Ukrainian and Bosnian muslims there is no problems with them whatsoever.

    All twelve questions:
    1. Is it lawful for Jews to have more than one wife?
    2. Is divorce allowed in the Jewish religion, and if it is, is it allowed even in contradiction to the codes of French law?
    3. Does Jewish law permit a Jewess to marry a Christian man, or a Jew to marry a Christian woman, or may they marry only other Jews?
In the eyes of Jews, are Frenchmen who are not Jewish, considered to be their brethren or strangers?
What type of conduct does Jewish law prescribe toward non-Jewish Frenchmen?
    6. Do the Jews who are born in France, and have been granted citizenship by the laws of France, truly acknowledge France as their country? Are they bound to defend it, to follow its laws, to follow the directions of the civil and court authorities of France?
    7. Who elects rabbis?
What kind of judicial power do rabbis exercise over the Jews?
    9. If there is rabbinical jurisdiction over the Jews, is it regulated by the laws of the Jewish religion or is it merely a custom existing among Jews?
    10. Are there professions from which Jews are excluded by Jewish law?
    11. Does Jewish law prohibit Jews from taking usury from other Jews?
    12. Does Jewish law prohibit Jews from taking usury from non-Jews?

Logically point 9 is in full contradiction to all others. "to follow its lows, direction of authorities"....??? All other questions acknowledge the exitence of "Jewish low" whatever it means. Solely the exitence of "jewish low" makes it sensless to ask further questons about french lows. Macron does not even dare to ask muslims, if they acknowledge "french lows" instead od Sharija. No community, which has its own lows, can acknowleged the other lows nnd Napoleon knew this himself too. Actually Napoleon wasnt frenchman, he was a Corsican, who never accepted French lows for himself either...on this way he became en emperor of France. This is a theatral scene between Napoleon and the jews about French lows, where boths sides know exactly that both reject them.

In 1831, Jews in Jamaica gained full political rights, including the right to vote, and the ability to own property as British citizens. This was three years before the emancipation of slaves in Jamaica, and two years before similar rights were granted to Jews in England and Canada. The Jamaican Jewish movement inspired these later movements.

"Worse than they were in ancient times?" Is he kidding? African slave men were castrated by the Arab slavers, dying like flies. Infants were stabbed, strangled, or bashed against trees, to get rid of them. African slaves in the US had families. Field hands lived in small houses, and house slaves lived in the big house, to attend the slave owner's family. There were free, African slave owners in the US. Descendents of African slaves make up 14% of the US population. Where are the descendants of the many millions of African slaves transported to Arabia, Persia, India, Spain, and France, especially under the Ottomans? They didn't survive and reproduce, because they weren't allowed to survive and reproduce.

There must be genetic components. @samcousin6543 Před 18 dny +2

Your completely missing the point of what he is talking about because you are hyper focused on telling everyone that premodern islamic socieites at the same time, extant (the ottoman empire and surviving barbary states dependent on the ottomans/on lesser occasion the morrocan kingdom) were brutal and barbarous to their non-muslim subjects and war captives both of european and african descent (side note, europeans slavs, were also still being held as slaves in tatar lands during this time period as well and were only recently being liberated).
The professor is simply explaining how the french revolutionary context of the word emancipation in this case is distinct from other soon followed emancipations that are occuring, in some cases in tandem with the advances of napoleon's armies into eastern europe...and more commonly shortly after the napoleonic wars ended and waves of new intellectual revolutions believing in enlightenment ideals of citizenship over subjecthood swept central and eastern europe freeing millions from status discrimination of serfdom, legalized peasantry discrimination, discrimination against langauges in the kingdom of hungary... the list is actually very long.
The professor doesn't dwell on this context as he assumes the listener may or may not be able to investigate these greater contexts themselves, but being that he is teaching an American audiance he is merely briefly explaining the french revolutionary definition of the word emancipation in contrast to what we as american's may be used to hearing it our own history classes.
This is simply not a lecture on north african slavery, and your current fixation on it is odd. He was merely explaining the distinction of the uses of the term. The slaves of north africa were by and large NEVER emancipated, as they had to be liberated by european armies and colonial administrations for the most part.

A really interesting lecture on a topic I knew nothing about. Thank you so much!
On one point, though, I think you might be mistaken: about the idea of the phrase "Jewish emancipation" coming (at least directly) out of the emancipation of black slaves. In fact I think Jewish emancipation _in an Anglo-Saxon context_ really emerges from the debate about Catholic emancipation, the lifting of civil disabilities on Catholics in Great Britain and especially in Ireland among the political classes in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, both before Ireland and Great Britain united into the United Kingdom in 1800, but especially afterwards when the problem could not be wished away as a foreign problem and as (Protestant) Irish MPs became part of the Westminster Parliament. I imagine the influence of the American and French revolutions played a part in this movement for Catholic emancipation, as did the Napoleonic wars and the rhetoric of freedom employed in them, and the movement for the emancipation of slaves must have had an impact on the struggle for Catholic civil rights, but it is this call for Catholic emancipation that directly led to calls for for Jewish emancipation in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
It was the _Catholic Emancipation Act_ of 1829 that ended most disabilities for Catholics (voting, standing for Parliament, Government offices), but Jews had to wait for the _Jews Relief Act_ of 1858 (and some disabilities remained right up to the Universities Test Act in the late 1860s that finally allowed non-Anglicans to go officially to the universities).
This Google ngram shows the relative introduction and popularity of the phrases *Catholic emancipation,* *Jewish emancipation* and *emancipation of slaves* (I've exaggerated *Jewish emancipation* tenfold for visibility).
    books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=%28Jewish+emancipation*+10%29%2CCatholic+emancipation%2Cemancipation+of+slaves&year_start=1700&year_end=2008&corpus=en&smoothing=1

It primarily concerns Bishop's mitres, but it also has examples of important Jewish figures portrayed, both positively and negatively, in similar head gear. Alexander Henry, the presenter, connects it to St. Jerome's translation of the rays emanating from the head of Moses as he descended from Mt. Sinai as horns. The hat was supposed to represent those horns. Watch the video. It's fascinating.

I would definitely like to learn more about this in more detail, partly because I've been reading recent historians who have questioned whether the universal rights of the Napoleonic reforms really improved matters for people, or whether we lost something by adopting universal rights as opposed to the specific liberties that had previously been negotiated. The examples used in these books do include Jewish communities, but they are far from exclusively about the effect on Jewish communities. My reading has got me to wondering what Jewish people think about all that, and also brought to my attention the need to know more about just what the Napoleonic reforms entailed. Your summary was very helpful, but I'd be glad to learn more. (I would guess there is some diversity of thought.)

France today is suffering a massive migration of people that bares no respect for the Laws and traditions of that host country. The same for the US, England and Europe.

Another fascinating talk Professor! Very interesting how fear and/or desperation lends itself to compromise. We can look at France in 2010-today, and see how it was so overrun with certain immigrants and ultimately, was forced to make many of the same compromises to accommodate them that they (the French) were expecting Jews to make clear back in the late 1700s. Ecclesiastes 1:9

In Spain we have two different legal systems at some levels and there is no contradiction in it. For most matters, even some criminal matters, the Spanish law accepts as binding the decisions of the Gypsy patriarch with respect to his own people, according to Gypsy custom. Outside ethnic communities, Spanish law recognizes as binding decisions made by a specific traditional farmer's tribunal on water rights. Maintaining areas of self-determination for certain communities is only sensible and contributes to the acceptance by those communities of the State. It's fair, as homgeneous laws are not always suitable, as an expression of the awareness of a modicum of relativity.

Napoleon is definitely a controversial figure, but he is not responsible for the wars associated with his name, the so called "napoleonic" wars that were just the continuation of the french revolutionnary wars, that started in 1792, when Napoleon was just an unknown artillery lieutenant in the french armee (and an anti-french corsican independantist).
When Napoleon seized power, France was already at war, against Austria, Russia, the Ottoman Empire and Britain, and already had been for 7 years. Most of the wars, the "coalition wars", were made against him, not by him, coalitions of monarchies funded by the british.
Napoleon does have a lot to answer for, in Egypt, in Haiti, in Spain and in Russia. But each time, he does have a lot of extenuating circumstances.
In Egypt, he was french general at the orders of the french republic, he made war with extreme cruelty but he did it along the rules of the Middle East, and from this expedition did rose the discipline of egyptology, and the first research that would allow later the digging of the Suez Canal.
In Haiti, he behaved like any colonial head of state would have, and if it's often said that he tried to restore slavery, slavery had not been really abolished. As fot the quotes and thoughts that are attributed to him about black people, it's just made-up or wrongly translated BS from activists.
In Spain, he did invade and occupied an ally country, but you could argue he was only replacing a french dynasty (the Bourbons, set up on the spanish throne by Louis the XIVth a century earlier) with another french dynasty (the Bonapartes) and that abolishing the spanish inquisition could be put to his credit (plus, it lauched the independance of Latin America).
In Russia, he did invade first, but Russia was about to attack him anyway, it had tried launch an insurrection in Poland the previous war, it had broken the alliance, it was openly preparing for war and left all of Napoleon's conciliation offers unanswered.
If Napoleon was indeed the main responsible for all the wars associated with him, and that he had started all those wars just for his ego and thirst for power and glory, under the mask of liberty and modernity, then you could indeed say he was just a proto-Hitler, just a little less crazy and evil.
But he not anymore responsible for those wars than his contemporaries, an ruler is judged in regard to his contemporaries.
As fot the quotes and thoughts that are attributed to him about black people, it's just made-up or wrongly translated BS from activists.

Divorce was never permitted, with the one mosaic exception, which resulted in major distress to all parties.

The function of the French Revolution was
1.To end the monarchy so that a more compliant client state could be created.
2.To Establish a Central Bank system so that money could be created out of nothing and issued by a private bank at interest to the state.
    3. To entrench anti Catholic sentiment and ultimately the Catholic Church.
Napoleon was suspicious of French Jewry for the part they were alleged to have played in financing Anti Monarchy propaganda prior to the Revolution and financing the orgy of violence during the revolution.
