  • The launch of a four-cylinder GR Supra means Toyota's sports car is now more accessible and economical than ever. But it also places the entry-level model directly in the firing line of one of the best lightweight sports cars out there, the Alpine A110. How does it stack up? Dan Prosser delivers the verdict...

    It would have to be the Alpine for me - if I was buying a Supra I would definitely want that 6 cylinder B58, the 4 cylinder just doesn't have that much to offer imo. I also love the fact that in 2021 small, lightweight, mid-engined sports cars like the Alpine exist and get the credit they deserve. Great video as always!

The Toyota has a bigger boot and doesn't require being pushed to the raggedy edge to enjoy it.. more usable around town. Not convinced these two cars should be compared. Don't get me wrong I like the Alpine and all it's apparent qualities. I have no doubts about all the rave reviews it gets. But all the handling and ride praise it gets sounds suspiciously like a Miata doesn't it? If you were to ignore the badge and price it starts sounding like an 86 not a Supra. Then what about the Alpha Romeo 4C or the 718? We live in heady times to have all those choices...well at least in Europe.

    • @FEGTTTSDH
      @FEGTTTSDH Před 3 lety

      Well why Mazda doesn´t make a Miata Spirit R? with a turbo 2.0 engine? the 4c is radical at the limit especially in wet:
      "An early start, a drive to Surrey, a chance to get the 4C out of the city. Finally, some wet but open roads and a chance to stand on it. The news is not good. The 4C feels all over the shop. The steering weighting is weird, going light and then heavy seemingly at random. Worse yet, the whole car darts and scampers across every wonky camber. At one point it almost spits me across the road into the path of an Avensis. Chuck in the boosty, aggressive power delivery that threatens to unhinge the back wheels and the whole thing is stressful and stupid and really very nasty. By the time I get where I’m going my mood is foul and my anus puckered. That wasn’t much fun at all"

      @@Ahogg1992 as for the manual gearbox, this car has the engine from the Megane RS, so it would be possible to fit a reasonable transmission I would have thought and one that is also proven to be reliable, but most of the time when these cars are retro fitted back to manuals it ruins the car. 430 Scuderia manuals for example are trash. The car was designed around the dct so I don’t think it would be improved with a manual or atleast not greatly improved

    • @simonng2077

      @@gregmayled I tend to agree. The gearing is short, ideally designed for the car, and because it is relatively short it requires constant engagement. The Cayman I tested it against was also a wonderful car, but the manual gearing was so long I spent most of my time (at legal speeds) in 2nd or 3rd. I’ve also owned a manual Megan RS265, and it was fantastic. But the DCT on the Alpine is so fast, it brings a different type of engagement...as for power, you can get it tuned to 300hp (225kw) and 380Nm, but it doesn’t need it. Tested by auto car, it is as quick as a Cayman S to 100kmh, and quicker I think from 80-120kmh. Why more when it is so perfectly balanced as is...
