My sister was the Head Writer on the Dodge Ram Pick-up truck Service Manual from 1992 to 2005. She was a Certified Professional Technical Communicator by The Society for Technical Communication, which began in World War I in 1917, 105 years ago. It is quite difficult to translate the language the design engineers use to describe what should happen during a diagnosis and repair, into language the mechanic can follow to actually do the repair in the shop. She won an industry award for the vast improvement she made to these manuals. The writer she replaced learned English when she moved to America in her late twenties ! My sister knew that every single manual would have errors such as this video shows. Her goal was to reduce them as much as humanly possible.
I have a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan. Even so I could never find the information I needed in the Microsoft Help Manuals, because Bill Gates said, "Our Software Engineers write the manuals, because they know how the programs work, and Technical Writers do not." So you would get this "To merge two Word Documents into one document select both in the Merge Window." No hint as to how to activate, or get to, the "Merge Window." Searching the entire manual for "Merge Window" would get you nothing because the Software Engineer who created it calls it the "Files Selection Window." The Microsoft manuals were rife with this sort of nonsense, until finally, in 2005 after 20 year of impossible-to-use manuals, Microsoft created a Technical Writing Department to create manuals for all of their software. Now every time I see a Technical Term in their manual it is a hypertext link to the page that describes it.

While you were having lunch, at 4:03, I paused the video to think through how it works and decide what I would have done. You gave us the chance for a brilliant teaching moment. At first I was a little surprised that each switch sends both a power and a ground wire over to the other side, rather than one power signal wire, with a single ground for each door. Clearly they do that to allow the switch to reverse flow by swapping power and ground, thus requiring two wires for each logic decision. And your decision to use a parallel test light rather than a multimeter didn't escape notice. Old school!

    • @rael5469
      @rael5469 Před 2 lety +2

Could it also be for safety so that a single shorted wire wouldn't accidentally cause the window to close.....on a child? I don't know, just wondering. I know it was a concern in the past when power windows became more common. I don't remember what the safety feature improvement was.....but maybe what you described is it.

In re: the Subaru, I had a Grand Cherokee which blew the 15A fuse for interior lights. I ended up in a local shop, they “said” they replaced an interior light socket. Later that day, the entire interior burst into flames. Huge hullabaloo, months of investigation by three insurance companies. In the end, some hot shot “mechanic” at the repair shop had “fixed” the problem by putting a 25A fuse in the slot. Right!

I remember 2 cars that I had to replace the clutch in that the repair manuals said that the whole front suspension and CV axles had to be taken out to get to the clutch. On both of them I took the left side lower ball joint off the knuckle and was able to shift the transaxle over enough to get the clutch replaced. A few minutes thinking saved me hours of work. Another case was a Chevy Luv pickup that the manuals called for taking a lot of parts off to replace the starter. A few minutes looking revealed that the simplest way to get to the starter was to drop the exhaust pipe and access every bolt and nut on the starter. It sure beat taking half a dozen other pieces off that didn't include the exhaust pipe.

Had to fix the window motor on my brother's partner's Skoda Fabia last year, 2 door, 2008, but couldn't find one in a scrap yard. However I could find a plenty of Volkswagen Polos, 2 door 2008 models. Exactly the same switches on the doors, physically the same motor, both made by Volkswagen group. Did it work? Nope, the motor itself has software in it, and if it doesn't match the original then not only does that window not work but the other window doesn't work either. Absolutely crazy!

    • @44R0Ndin

      German engineering at its "finest"!
In the future you might try treating it like a failed hard drive. Assuming it's the motor itself that failed, and not the driver circuit on the circuit board that also has the computer, I'd try swapping the electronics of the old window motor into the casing and motor and gearbox of the junkyard-obtained part.
I mean, if the computer being different is the problem, then keep the computer the same, right?

I just did one of these a few weeks ago on a 2014 Buick Enclave, except mine was a rear passenger side window switch and unfortunately you have to remove the door panel to access the switch box unlike the driver master control switches. All went well until I got to the plastic clips, now I didn't break anything, went slow and easy, but man there was a lot of "Come-on Baby" lol as those clips hung on for dear life I've never seen or had a plastic door panel clips hold like screws, it was nuts!!! But I got it done. Wish it was easy to access like this, and I tried to avoid full panel removal but that's the way GM decided to go with the passenger window switches according to the GM repair manual. Oh well.

Watching your videos lead me to actually find the problem first. If i had to buy a fuel pressure tester before knowing it was a pump Or a injector so be it ....
This latest pain was the Driver door regulator motor ...Tested the relays with a meter And a 9volt After swapping them Looked at the fuse. Longer story short Took the motor apart And found One of two magnets on the sides of the shaft was split/broken And my guess is it was the side for going up. And the reason it split was a loose rivet in the door plate The window would flex this plate And the motor would be on a slight angle Putting pressure on the window in the slot to go up And pressure on the shaft that would grind on the 1 magnet ....replaced the whole motor and arms Bingo Bango ! ty..PS replaced the rivets for bolts and larger washers

The wife's now happier than being in line at FiveBucks. So for you Fix It Yourselfers, try this before spending whatever this switch cost. Be Gentle with the plastic parts being there really isn't any major guts inside. "A LITE" coating of Lithium spray lube works even better.

I had a 09 Malibu with a drivers side window that wouldn't operate, up or down. after days of fishing around with the switches, finding they were good, I finally found there wasn't power going to the window motor. so I checked the rubber boot between the body and door, sliced it open, found some wires were broke. spliced them back together, back in good shape.. I don't have any meters to get into the computer but maybe if I did it wouldn't have taken so long.. so action causes a reaction as in the door always opening and closing with that rubber boot flexing with the wires in side. food for thought..Great videos!

My daughter has one of those trucks. When she had a window problem she went on YT and found a video about cleaning those switches. She did it herself and it worked. I find the switches that sit flat give more trouble as dirt, dust and soda can fall into them. The older cars with the switches mounted vertical didn't have as many issues.

They must have pretty big gaps if soda cans are able to fall in. 🤣

Eric, Jon V. here. I had a 2003 Jeep. The wires in the drivers door, I guess because it gets used more, would break. The wires had to be repaired often.

Great video. My police Tahoe is doing the same thing. I figured it was the switch. Just ordered a new one from Chev. I would rather fix the thing myself and save the state a couple hundred bucks and save me from dropping the Tahoe off at the dealer for a day or two! Thanks!!

easy life you are having there Eric, i have been working on an old chevy, it's a 1960 bel air 4 door V8, it has been sitting for 7 years and my job is to get it back on the road, so far i have it running on 7 cylinders, latest job was the brakes, so all new hydraulics for the brakes and we had a great test drive a few days ago, next job is to tackle the miss fire then it will go for an MOT, which is a uk safety check.
