While most guitar players tune their guitars to the standard E A D G B E, Tommy tunes his to W T F H O W
lol
this made me chuckle
Remember the century likes😁
Yeah...
Good one I'm taking it.
Steve Vai once said that Tommy Emmanuel is two of the best guitarists he's ever met.
HA! Really? I hadn't heard that. That's a great way that Vai chose to describe Emmanuel's playing. Who could disagree.
The other being Jeff Beck
@@jamesbonee3102 or maybe Frank...
When he plays two parts simultaneously it's a sort of magic. He is of the best that ever lived and I'm privileged to know it
@@jamesbonee3102 The joke is that he plays as if he is two guitarists at once :)
My fiancee is a long time guitar player. He just happened to come across Tommy Emmanuel about 6 mos. ago on public TV. Never heard of him before, but was just mesmerized with his talent.
Talked to a fellow guitar player and found out Tommy would be performing nearby on May 15th, which was last night.
Tickets were more than reasonable, and WE WERE BLOWN AWAY!
Need I say more?
I saw him Friday in Albany NY for the 2nd time. He blows me away every time, whether I hear him live or on CZcams. I'm a semi professional trumpet player (which to me means that I get paid to play gigs in the greater east coast area where I live) but if I had half of his technique/dedication to his instrument and TALENT, then maybe I'd be 1/32nd as good as he is. Unless I hear differently I think he's the most accomplished player on any instrument ever??????
He owns that guitar. He doesn’t just play it, he owns it. I am in awe.
this is what a lifetime of dedication to an instrument looks like
..sure is.
Yes.
Truth
for a talented and tasty musician! I know a lot who play longer than him and sounding like a brick fall from a loader... The taste starts at the very beginning!
bet he never heard of switch, ps4 or ps5, or xbox or he was a gamer once...lol
If you listen carefully, between 0:00 and 5:11 is the best part.
02 O2's CRAFT's Holy shit dude nice catch :D thanks!
Amen. Seen him 5-6 times and plan on going again this year. Then I go home and burn my guitars in the fireplace.
Funny stuff

What I love most about watching Tommy play, is he looks like hes loving every minute of playing that beautiful music. Ive played guitar for years but not even close to half this guy's standard! Start watching videos of Tommy Emmanuel and you wont stop theyre so wonderful
My daughter took me to see him in NYC tonight. I just got home. He was a guitar wizard.
My father passed of covid last year, and this was played at his funeral. My Dad taught me how to play guitar as a kid and for years we traded Tommy Emmanuel videos back and forth. I will cherish Tommy's version of this piece for the rest of my life.
I'm so sorry for your loss, and love this story
Ti capisco!
Hi Adam langston, yesterday we turned off the machines, and my mother left us. I'm now using the sublime beauty of this to help me heal too. They're gone, but they will always be with us. Thank you Tommy.
May his soul rest in peace ...

I saw him in concert tonight at Blues on Broadbeach at the Gold Coast. Tommy encouraged all people to make music no matter how good or bad you are. He is so compassionate.
This is the single greatest solo performance of music I have ever had the privilege of listening to live in London.
This kid has some potential
outstanding!!!
Yeah but he should probably change his diet to slow down the insanely rapid aging.
stolen comment
If he puts his mind to it he'll really do well i think !!
Maybe he should come up with some own stuff, though. Up his creative game a little, don't you think? If he read this and followed this simple but essential advice, he might really have a bright future ahead of him... I'll keep my fingers crossed for you little buddy.
I think it's safe to say Tommy knows his chords.
+Abir Tarafdar Funnily enough he doesn't! He's just a freak of nature
+Harry Morris agreed!
Yep!
Please remember this; Tommy is also a very gracious man.
As a musician/guitarist, I appreciate the ability, talent and the song. As a human, there isn’t a note in this arrangement that doesn’t strike an emotional nerve. It’s weird how sound can touch a persons heart. Thank you Tommy for this.
That's the thing, it's technically profound but also really tasteful. That's not a common combination.
You just described what l was feeling, in my heart. I never really listened to him...till now. Fantastic!!
well said
It makes me tear up every time I hear it. I will say, though, the mix/tonality is just out of this world. It takes a lot to make even the best players in the world sound this good
Agreed.
People will be watching this video in 100 years time and be just as amazed as we are now
I agree. This brand of music will last as long as earth is here. Because no matter how advanced we become, hard work and passion applied to something will bring forth true beauty.
I'm 67, been playing since I was 15 and I can truly say, my E chord is almost as good as his. :)
Ha! Me too! Saw him in SanFrancisco. He broke a string, fixed it telling funny stories all the time...... Stretched it and picked up where he left off!
A guy I'd love to have a beer with.
Yeah! It's a nice beginning... IoI
I'm 66 and been playing since I was 11. One of my strings sounds the same.
@@newstart49 IoI do you remember which one?
Sunday morning. Sitting at the window, drinkining coffee. Listening to this and crying like a little girl. Beautiful stuff.
Words can't describe it.
I hope Chet Atkins was able to see you play this before he passed. Absolutely stunning.
He payed with chet on a number of occasions and was anointed as a guiter god by chett himself haha or something along those lines of a guitar god which tommy wwould have loved as chett was his idol growing up and even as an adult.
thank you for all the love you give Tommy... we all have nothing but love for you my brother.
Those 20 seconds of harmonics are more than all I know of guitar...
Its true, Lucas!
it's unbelievable
That's not all, he does much more harmonics throughout the whole song hahah
@@fredericovilar7289 I know hahahahaha
He`s amazing!
The stellar thing about his playing is the utter joy one can feel as he plays. It's a remarkable gift.
My mom sent this to me. When I was very little, she sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow to me so I would go to sleep. I'd always end up singing it with her. I love her so very much. She is always here for me.
When other guitarists play, we listen to their guitar: but when Tommy plays? - we listen to Tommy.
Great meaning!
Absolutely dude!
Well said. I experience that when I play for people. It's the greatest feeling in the world. It's Divine. Anything you put 10,000 plus into, takes you to a different level.
You’re wrong. The Guitar listens to Tommy.
and tommy listened to chet.
87 years old and love to hear this guy play in the evening.
somebody give this man a grammy
Chef Tommy puts the basic Over The Rainbow in the pot & adds all the seasoning...& spares none!
Tasty...so tasty Tommy!
can you imagine the amount of work it must take to play like this?
i dont care how much talent you have
no one plays like this automatically
this guys busting his ass all day everyday
+roman14032 Yup, He says he practices everyday, as being guitarist is his "job", I guess he plays over 6 or 7h daily ..

Lifetime of experience, there is not secret. You can't come up with chords and ideas like those in one day
+chris kozub kmsl!! it'll do it to you
I came here thinking this was a lesson, but after listening to Tommy I promptly smashed my guitar.
+Anonymous I know you're joking, but Tommy would never ever want any body to do that. He just wants the world to love playing, no matter at what level. I'm a crap player and, at 71, I will be a crap player for the rest of my life, but he inspired me to keep on trying, no matter what. I get joy out of any tiny improvement.
Even though some other people got offended and took what you said way too seriously, I think that was hilarious!

Saw Tommy Emmanuel twice in concert he is definitely one of God’s greatest musical gifts to humanity…
A musician this good doesn't "play an instrument" ... they take us to another realm. This is the first time I've experienced a guitar transcend "guitar" and bring such radiance and textured nuance as to feel it must be celestial in origin.
He might be the best guitar player in the world. What a privilege to be on the planet at the same time to see and hear him play.
I can only agree with you
He is the best acoustic guitar player without question. czcams.com/video/qQhECkexmSI/video.html
His guitar is an extension of himself. It’s like an organ. Perfection.
Just like a master painter who can see all the colors, Tommy can see all the notes, notes I'd have never even thought of.
@@robertf6344 What a profound insight!
Every time I comeback to see this I´ve got surprised....
this might truly be one of the most heartfelt and beautiful arrangements of a piece of music I’ve ever seen. Everything Tommy does is pure magic ❤
I'm 58 and have been playing the guitar 44 years now. I can count on one hand the number of times a guitarist has made me cry. Jeff Beck has brought me to tears (The Live at Ronnie Scott's show). I have only discovered Tommy Emmanuel about 3 years ago. I have been devouring his CDs and You Tube videos ever since. The man is probably the greatest acoustic player I have ever heard in my lifetime. He is SO far out there, with an incredible range of stylings from Chet Atkins-like stuff to aboriginal stuff that is "other-worldly". This version of "Rainbow" brought me to tears, which is no small feat. I mean the song has been covered to death by EVERYONE! This versions stands out, and is incredibly rich and moving in its chordal tonalities. Great job Tommy! Bravisimo!
Ben Dover i taught him how to play.
Well said. Have a listen to amazing grace to and angelina
Completely agree with you. I've known Tommy very recently, and I'm impressed by the way he plays the guitar. I have always admired Knopfler, and his particular way of playing the guitar, making It talk. I recognize that the ability to make the guitar sings, with multiple nuances similar to the human voice, I have only seen in Tommy.
Love this guy. I found out about him from when he played with Jesse Cook who is stellar too!
What's your favorite song
The way guitar is meant to be played - fingerstyle, classical , and jazz. I'm a rock guitarist and anyone can learn to rock, but this is another level few can achieve.
Don't forget blues
@@frederikandersen8402 blues is for beginners to learn how to improvise and later (eventually) become a decent jazz musician xD Learn the pentatonic scales and you are good to go for blues.
@@fabianb4893 then later on when you can actually play it becomes hard again to do it tastefully.
@@lukaskuipers7791 yeah but this occurs to any types of music, my initial point stands, blues is simplistic even compared to rock.
True story
He's a CGP - Certified Guitar Player - a title Chet gave out to only 4 or 5 players. And he's such a great entertainer. The full package.
Tommy's greatness is matched only by the feelings he has for the music; and his willingness to share those feelings with his audience is a god--given talent we should truly appreciate 🎉
I consider myself a well-adjusted adult male. My eyes were moist throughout this entire video. This is so beautiful there are NO words to describe it. The flourishes he adds can't even be described as gorgeous, because that's inadequate. You have to play his videos twice: once to watch him perform his magic, and a second time just to listen. And this must be played in its entirety, because if you think he's only going to perform this magic trick one way, you're in for a wonderful surprise. Or 10 surprises. The idea that that anybody "down" voted this video is merely a comment on our pathetic species. To anybody who appreciates music on any level, this guy is a gift.
We are a flawed species lol, Tommy confirms that we occasionally do magnificent things.
One of his inspirations as well as mine, and one of our shared old teachers, Don Andrews, contributed to his style... Don's style is much the same. I hope you're still around Don. You have a great student in Tommy... He took it to another level.
Truth!
You said moist
The sounds in that guitar is like the heaven is angelical i don’t know 🎶🙏👏 woow
This reminds me of how indescribably beautiful it is to be alive right now.
Truly, truly beautiful. When my elder cousin Kathey, (who was like a mother to me) passed away, I chose this video to post on her family's FB page. Whenever I hear Mr. Emmanuel play this song, I think of her. I miss her. I love her.
Nothing, but nothing has ever struck me musically like this apart from Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto. Somewhere over the Rainbow is such a pure melody that any arrangements have to be way above average to enhance it. This, however, literally carries the soul over the rainbow, the clouds, through the warmth of sunlight, whirling through the air. It has moved me physically, literally changing my heart rate, in my soul, exhilarating. What a joy!
I would love to hear what Harold Arlen would say about Tommy's rendition of this timeless classic.
Tommy's mastery of the instrument has no peer.
He moves me to tears on many of his songs, including this.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever...thank you Mr. Emmanuel
Those cascading, "harp-like" tones you did at the top literally blew me away... I've never heard anything like this played on a guitar recording, ever. I'm 74-years old, and I totally and completely agree with Andrew Foy's high praise of your playing. This is simply the greatest single interpretation of this song ever performed, and I've heard a few. So far I've listened to it about 100 times, and it constantly manages to inspire. Kudos.
Check out Chet Atkin's performance on song "Malaguena". He lifted this from Chet (which should be celebrated).
Wow say no more.
@@NytronX Dude. Been around a LOT longer than Chet.
Tap harmonics. They are hard to nail since it involves taping the string very delicately with your index and combine it with a pluck of your index. This guy does it like nothing all over the fretboard.
@@fixxxer602 I learned this piece. it isn't just tap harmonics but you need to alternate between harmonics and regular notes to create the cascading effect (in the intro he uses a tap harmonic with his thumb and index finger then uses his ring finger to play the alternate notes on the first and second strings)
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this, but I can tell you that every time I watch this I get very emotional.
I’m a grown man 56 years old and this is so beautiful it makes me cry every time I listen.
My Dad told me Santana is known as the best guitarist on Earth. I sent him this video to prove him wrong.
I like that,GOD bless you.
Santana :D???? He´s not even nearly one of the best.
Santana really sucks
Santana??? No way! Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, ALL are better than Santana in my opinion. I could name more. He's not even in my top 25.
Let's not forget Stevie Ray Vaughn
I just wish to play better than you someday, but today I can just practice :) Thanks for becoming inspiration for some us.
Oh, youth. You try playing at 1/10th of Tommy's abilities, then we can talk.
IMightBeJesus69 "We can talk" I'm sorry, at any moment I said i'm better than him, I could wish to be as good as him, but if some day I get it, should I stop there? Nop, If some day i become as good as him, i'll keep practising to be better yet! Talk whit you? Why would i like to talk whit you? you sound selfish and conceited, I don't like to talk whit this kind of people. So just let me keep practicing ;)

When I have had the crappiest of work days, I walk into my home and turn on the big speakers and play this version of this song by this man.
It makes everything better, IMMEDIATELY! ❤
For me it's simple, there's nobody else I know that plays like Good old Tommy!!
There's one who comes very close: Kent Nishimura. Must-watch.
I think the part that makes me happiest is that he almost can't help but sing along with it, even while he's being amazing on the fretboard.
Those intro harmonics are of themselves a rainbow painted at the fingertips of a master musician-Tommy Emmanuel.
All those other amazingly talented finger style guitarists you see online these days have this man to thank.
To me he is the Paco de Lucia gringo, the best of the decade, very humble and charismatic.
Many blessings Tommy Emmanuel.
I am a 65 year old Jazz pianist, and Tommy's sense of harmony just always blows me away.
I'm not going to lie. First time I heard this I laughed while crying like a child.
Me too!
Yep. I've been known to do that too.
I think T. Emmanuel's playing has that effect on a lot of people.
I've done that with a few TE songs. Also with Martin Taylor's "I Got Rythym" and more recently Molly Tuttle's "Take The Journey".
I get misty EVERY time I hear it. Especially live I needed a crying towel.
Unbelievable. Excelennce at its highest.
Breathtaking playing, arangement and the level of skill playing artificial harmonics is second to none, including Lenny Breau who sort of invented the technique. Tommy plays at a stunning level of world class mastery.
Who the balls would dislike this? His hands are literally a miracle.
+King Matt ...My mom always said; "Some people's taste is all in their mouths."
an untrained ear or just a negative person
Merle Travis is generally credited with starting this style playing. Along came Chet Atkins and took it to a whole new level. Then there was Tommy Emmanuel who took it even father. Tommy is not only a "Certified Guitar Player" but is a fantastic entertainer . I saw him perform live in Fort Myers, FL in March of 2015. I was about 10 feet from the stage so I could not only hear but see his every move. I thought I was dreaming. Made me want to go home a break both my guitars but I didn't. I did make up my mind to learn the boom chick method. Man it is tough and I have been playing 50 years. I've been trying for 3 months 3 and 4 times a day and every time I stop thinking about my thumb the dumb thing stops picking. I've heard it takes years just to become bad at it and I believe it so.
Henry Dunn Please take a look at Tommy's Fingerstyle Milestones instructional set! We've had great feedback from players who swear that they never thought they would be able to fingerpick but was able to using those lessons. It was a labour of love, specifically made for people like you. Good luck! TE Admin
Tommy Emmanuel
Tommy Emmanuel I just purchased the set with the CD and download
Tommy Emmanuel I've been going through Tommy's Fingerstyle Milestones set. I am up to video #35 and this morning it finally sunk in as to what I was supposed to be doing. One of my problems is that I have developed a LOT of bad habits trying to teach myself to finger-pick over the past 50 years and they are tough to break. But it is starting to make sense. I have a LOOOOOG way to go yet but I can now see the light thanks to Tommy's instructions. I purchased the download plus the DVD. I haven't received the DVD yet but it should be here any day
If anyone is serious about learning Tommy's style I highly recommend they buy this.
+Lars Olsen Hi Lars. I have found and watched a lot of the videos on CZcams. I even found a way to save on my computer some of the better videos so I can refer back to them. You can't do this with Google Chrome but the Firefox browser has an add-on that will allowing the saving of CZcams videos.
The most help that I have had is with Tommy's "Fingerstyle Milestones" I am now up to about 45 videos out of 95. I am into the really hard part now and that is trying to pick with the first 3 fingers independent of the thumb. Two days ago I finally did it for the first time. But the next day I could NOT do it when I practiced that day. I finally gave up for the day, I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. A couple of times I've hit a wall so to speak and had to stop trying for a day or two. Then when I go back to what I was trying it finally sinks into my head and then into my fingers. I can't wait until I practice today as I practice 4 and sometimes 5 times a day.
Granted there will only be one Tommy but this is something that I have always wanted to achieve ever since I bought my Gretsch Country Gentleman. I have always been a fan of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. The first time I ever heard of Tommy Emmanuel was when Chet Atkins mentioned his name on a record that I had of Chet and Les Paul. They were "clowning around" naming their favorite guitar players and Chet named Tommy. I thought at the time I had better check this guy out if Chet thinks that much of him.
Some times it's very slow going but I feel I am making progress and having a ball doing it. So as long as my wife's ears can stand it it's onward and upwards. When I die they will probably have to pry my 1964 Silvertone Jaguar out of my hands so they can close the casket lid. I sold the Country Gentleman a long time ago and now down to only 2 guitars but my favorite is the 1964 Silvertone as that was my first electric I bought from my nephew in about 1967 for $50. It still to this day sounds great even with almost 70 year old arthritic fingers picking it... LOL
Stellar! Sounds like a "Grammy Award" presentation. Thank you so very much Mr. Arlen for your multi-style rendition. Keep up the good work. AMEN!
The greatest alive acoustic guitarist! That’s all! ❤️

Im an old man and this has always been my favorite song from my favorite movie and for me nothing will ever equal the scene of Judy singing it. That said this is my favorite instrumental version played with respect and sensitivity and a nod to Chet. Thankyou Tommy

*He has total control over of his guitar.*

1.5k Downvotes? I can't even comprehend that - unless it's from people who have no earthly idea how to play the guitar and they're jealous? This was an absolute masterpiece!
I was thinking exactly the same, this man is an absolute genius, I've been playing guitar for 45 years and I feel like a beginner in comparison
Only excuse is they have the sound off. And they're blind.
I've listened to him play this so many times when I'm down and it ALWAYS brings my mood up and then I get lost in the genius of his playing.
Pure jealousy. Some people can’t stand someone having the amount of skill to be on this level.
everyone here is wrong, they're all misclicks :)

I just added my guitar to the bonfire wood pile. That’s just plain amazing!
This made my eyes leak , , thankyou for this beautiful man, Lord,
Its crazy how influential this guy has been on modern fingerstyle guitar. A living legend.
I know Chet was Tommy's idol, but I dare say even Chet would be shaking his head in disbelief at some of the stuff this guy does on guitar. His videos are a love, hate thing for me because I love to watch him play, but he's so good it makes me want to use my guitar for a rowboat oar, because I realize how much I suck. I know theres no real way to determine who's the greatest of all time, but he would get my vote.
+allanjenny I just watched this video for what must be at least the tenth time and I still can't believe what I seen and heard. That wry grin at the end was certainly warranted. Definitely a more than worthy successor to Mr. Atkins.
+allanjenny Me too. I used to think players like malmsteen, petrucci, vai ,johnson etc. were the be all end all of guitar players until I stumbled upon one of Tommys videos a couple of years ago while watching some of chets . Those guys are all incredible players , but Tommy takes it to a whole other level.
+08c6vette To many great one's. I pick Tommy for acoustical. Mark Knopfler , front man for Dire Straights, as the best all around player in the world.
+old golfer You're right, there are too many great ones. Thats why I said there's no real way to determine the greatest. I've watched videos of guitar virtuosos from every genre under the sun and although too many of them to count have left me awestruck Tommy is the first guy that I said to myself am I really seeing and hearing what I think I'm seeing and hearing? As for Knopler, he is an amazing player too. So much so that I'm suprised Chet never bestowed the CGP award on him, being that he thought so highly of his playing. Personally I think Tommy is in a league of his own, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I think its a dis service to players of this caliber to try to say one is better than the other. When a player reaches the pinnacle of his particular style, how can we compare? Hendrix, Joe Pass, Page, Django, Knopfler, Tommy and others take their talent/skills to a level and then express themselves in a unique way which makes us mere mortals stand back. I like to throw these guys into 10 best and leave it at that.
This has to be one of the greatest ever covers of all time. Outstanding guitar playing, beautiful exploitation of the full arsenal of guitar tricks. Tommy the GOAT!
Those harmonics in the intro are ANGELIC
Didn't even think this was possible on a standard guitar

Sheer genius. There's everyone else. . . and then there is Tommy Emmanuel -- the apex of acoustic guitar
Hi Tommy, I am currently watching your concert at TCam last Nov 2021 via CZcams. I was so touched by your announcement of becoming a US citizen. I share your sentiment as I became a US citizen myself and my family 42 years ago, more than half of my life. I love this country and have treasured it ever since. You are the best I’ve ever seen play the guitar. I don’t miss a day watching you play. Wish you all the best of health and continued success.
Speechless, utterly speechless, my jaw has hit the floor...
Don’t, it’s a scam
I couldn't even play this well in my dreams. True story.
This was not played by a human being. What an expression of emotions.
Tommy you make my eyes cry and my heart sing , truly beautiful music. Thank you.
We all know sir Tommy played the song Somewhere Over The Rainbow, but he made us feel we're on the RAINBOW
I have watched this video a number of times, and as a really poor guitar player, I’ve marveled at Tommys technical skills, his harmonies, his mastery of every genre from country, classical, jazz and more. I’ve watched in awe at his synchronization between his right and left hands, and how he can simultaneously play the bass line, rhythm and lead. His melodic fantasies are genius, and the depth of feeling is bottomless.
But now I just put on my headset, close my eyes, I don’t watch him play, as it distracts me from the sheer beauty of just listening to Tommy. He is a true gift to the planet.
Gee, I've always kinda wondered if there was a "best guitarist in the world". Well, that answers that question.
Unbelieveable what a human can do with guitar.
Emmanuel is amazing. Nothing is beyond him. He is so perfect in his playing. Such great technique and tone and beautiful voicings.
