Having spent a solid 4.5 hours yesterday replacing the radiator in my wife's Toyota/Scion, you telling me the Ford took 8 minutes is making me rethink my life choices 😉
Anyone remember replacing a radiator in 45 mins.
1. Remove upper/lower radiator hoses.
2. Remove two trans cooler lines.
3. Remove heater return hose.
4. Fan shroud
5. Two metal hold down brackets.
6. Pull and install new one and done. 45 mims.
I'm sure by now, the engineer who designed the radiator in that Ford has been sacked for making it that essy
@@johnclamshellsp1969 I can name that tune in 40 minutes!
77 Chevy pickup/stick ! No transmission lines!!!!
@@johnclamshellsp1969
I could swap a timing belt in 45 minutes on my old Ranger. 2.3 manual without A/C.
Base model v8 pickups and vans are still not bad.
True but when's the next time your gonna have to do any work on that Toyota vs the Ford bet you will win out in the long run. 😂
Have been a Shade Tree Mechanic all my life. It's fun to watch a Pro work, and it humbles me to see how much you know and all the tricks you've learned along the way.. I really enjoy this channel Wes, and having grown up in Illinois in the corn belt I appreciate those time outs to watch a harvest in progress. You do a very nice job and you keep an old man entertained. Thank you.
UK. As soon as I read 'old man' I thought kindred spirit. Vehicle in the shop and design all my working life. No regrets - except when it had to end. Regards.
@@jp-um2fr I'm with you my friend. Just turned 79 and I still try to do the routine maintenance like oil and grease and maybe a headlight, but this old machine gets tired in about an hour or two.
He’s good no doubt but I’m more impressed by us shadetree mechanics that do some of the exact same jobs he does but we don’t have the fancy tools. We improvise with what we got. But I pretty much always learn something from Wes. He’s straight up good.
@@Robrt32 Yep. It always helps to start out with a Dad that has a shop and a lot of know how, but I'm still amazed by some of the hopeless causes he tackles. My dad wasn't interested in mechanics, so I did all the hard way. Wouldn't trade a minute of it though.
@@jimbos1567 yea my dad was only interested in a whiskey bottle and the nearest bar. I learned the hard way also.
Dearth is a scarcity. Plethora is probably a better word. Love your channel
Surfeit is a good fancy word for it too.
'A bunch' would work just fine too
I’m going to have to go with ‘grundle’.
If it’s REALLY a lot, that would be a ‘metric as*-ton’.
Would you say he had a plethora of GMs?
@@Zupdood2 I thought grundle was the layman's term for the perineum?
thats a good transmission guy when he asks for the radiator to clean it out too
Great video , Wes !
I really like how your transmission guy told you to take out the radiator so he can flush the trans cooler , I know alot of people that have had their transmissions fixed or replaced and nobody ever flushed out the cooler and ended up with another burnt up transmission due to that .
It's really cool to hear people actually care enough to make sure a customer gets the job done right the first time.
Id like to add to that statement of keeping the customer happy the first time and say that not only is that true but it goes even deeper than that. He is doing this not only to make them happy but to KEEP them happy. Meaning they won't have a comeback they have to fix and eat the cost of the repair for free due to a half done job. Do it the first time so there won't be a next time!
Always flush the whole system when replacing transmission's it's a no brainer I think
Imagine a video with Wes, looking through the window at the road and commenting what's going on for two hours. I would watch it! :)
Your transmission guy is one of the good ones. I was thinking, "What about the transmission cooler circuit?" But he was on top of it. You'd be surprised how many guys forget something simple like that.
Also he installed some kind of upgrade kit going by Wes reading out the invoice
@@alouisschafer7212 yep, that's the way to do it while you're in there.
Anything to do with auto transmissions is still all black magic to me. I sort of get it... almost. But I still don't 100% understand them and probably never will. Anyone that works on them is up there with brain surgeons as far I'm concerned.
Thats a pretty neat tool if it actually works well. I resort to replacing the cooler or putting an inline filter in if they are pooched.
@@MattExzysame boat. I understand that idea but once I see the all the fluid channels and check balls I’m lost
14:25 holy cow that is the best looking prehistoric native American rock art I have ever seen!
Another Great Video, Wes. I wonder if that was a rare failure or something that the transmission shop sees on a regular basis? When they install upgraded parts or updates, I wonder. It seems like newer transmission problems are more electronic issues than mechanical issues. Thanks for making the point about the Torque Converter installation and flushing all the cooler lines. Really Appreciate your attention to detail and commentary. 👍🏻👍🏻
Rare with that low of miles.
My guess is towing a trailer that is to heavy.
Those 4R70's are solid transmissions.👍
Sounds like you're still feeling below the weather. Hopefully it will pass soon. Thanks for the content - always a great addition to a day.
Yeah, still seems a bit Foggy... but still soldiered through.
In the past I had taken a plumbing night coarse. The best lesson was when to hand off the problem to an expert. Good call. It is frustrating when engineers design vehicles that do not allow for easy maintenance / repair. I guess its the price of progress. Great video as always.
Figure that a lot of the testing phase gearboxes (like pre-production stuff) have exterior accessible solenoids and most of the non critical stuff is operable from the outside. :) don't you just love that kind of shit?
That transmission had never been serviced before. The yellow plastic plug in the pan is the assembly line dust cap. When the dipstick is installed on the assembly line, the plug gets pushed into the pan. It is to be discarded at the first filter change.
Fords recommended service intervals are too much. Needs fluid changes sooner than what they say for longevity
@@kd7cwg 30k at most 100/150k is nutz!
Nice work with the repairs Wes 🙂👍
Thanks for sharing with us. You know what battles to pick to fight!
Good to see you
Very informative.
Thanks, Wes, and have a great week!
briliant work as always wes and very entertaning!
Well done, Wes. Repair and video.

Another great video Wes 👍👌
Great job love watching your videos.
Always entertaining Wes.
Thanks for posting Wes
This is just a video I needed after a hurricane
Hi Wes excellent video for trans learning a lot always enjoying your work in detail so I understand and as always you and your families be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Always an engaging tale with you!
Another great job! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for another great video sir, really appreciate your channel.
Is it just me or is that the cleanest F150 that has ever been on this channel??
Always informative.
Thorough and pragmatic that make a wise mechanic, great job Wes
Thanks Wes for sharing the video. it was interesting to see all the metal in the pan . Like you I let the transmission guys tear them down and go though them . Thanks again for sharing and have a great day.
I like it when u don't give up, u r great at what u do. keep the clips coming
Hi Wes , all your uploads are great to watch, do not ever think otherwise. From Nr Liverpool UK.
Ahh, from one Wes to another, thanks as always for the videos! Guess the dump run is gonna happen an hour later today.
another nice one. get on that cycle now and have a nice early fall ride!
As always bro a great viewing video. Safe travels
The ol’ transmission two step! Great as always Wes, thank you.
always a good day when wes posts a new video. seems like i always go and binge watch all his other vids after too!
Wess beside you being an amazing mechanic your a great content creator!! Thanks for sharing
I love watching Wes work even though I don't know much about cars. I am intrigued with your problem solving skills.
As usual, excellent job
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅✅✅✅✅
Nice to see that you do get to work on some cars that haven't dissolved too much! Thanks for the video.
Always finding the solution like a Pro!
We rebuild these 4R70Ws all day long, they are great CHEAP trannys to maintain. Have one in my F-150 with 212,000 miles. Good work man!
You do nice work Wes, your customers are lucky to have you and *Thank You* for the video. As always it is greatly appreciated. 👍👍
Nothing like a "October Blue Bird Day" ! Thanks for sharing Wes.
Yet another great video!
I love the sidewalk chalk art by your son! Thanks for including that!
Sounds like he maybe welded his clutches together, there used to be a guy named Richard in Texas , had a CZcams channel his boy took over… he’d teach you all about em…transmissions I mean!! Dude was a genius, and I miss watching him!!!
Thanks Wes for the video take care.
Thanks for the ride along sir, they sure can pack a whole bunch of “STUFF” in a small area, enjoyed the video.
Wes the best part is we both learn here!
We learn what needs to be done!
We learn when its better to just send it out!
Thanks for sharing!
Good job as usual. Keep up the good work. And remember having work is better than not having work.
Interesting content. Thanks for posting.
Never know until you get into the meat of things. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for showing us the glitter of sadness.
Now that's some of the best transmission wrangling I have ever seen. Great vid
I hear you, Wes. If any of my own transmission work goes beyond the valve body assembly, solenoids, conductor plate, etc, that's where I draw the line.
Your a legend Wes my favourite CZcamsr
Super video, thanks for sharing your day.
#1 Maintenance Technician at it again. Thorough as usual, you have a blessed day Wes. Aloha from Kansas.
Great work Wes! 🖖👍👊😊
Nice job Wes.
Appreciate ya Wes! Hoping you are feeling better by the time you posted this. You sounded pretty rough. I noticed you wore Carhartt gear. I used to as well until I found Duluth Trading gear. It costs a tad more but it is well worth it.
👍👍😎✌️🤟 A job well done. Nice to see your smiling face, Wes.
i wish to see more of these - automatics remain a mystery to me, and I appreciate that you tap out on these quickly, too! :) Great video, keep em coming!
Thats why I love manual transmissions. Good job Wes
Nice job Wes that looked pretty easy!
The mark of a genius
Hi Wes another job well done. I gotta tell you that is the slickest trans jack I have ever seen!! I laughed when you said sketchy time when pulling the trans, sketchy time is when your using a regular floor jack with misc pieces of scrap wood LOL 😂
Sweet, some 4R7x action. Got a couple units on my bench to build and one in me car. I have a knackering for them and love building them.
Top job Wes
"Sketchy like a fox" 🤣Liking your work Wes 👍
Good job on sneaking out the transmission, that truck is in good shape considering.
Wes, There is no voodoo magic going on inside an automatic trans. Take it apart, clean, install new frictions, steels, bushings, seals, orings, apply pistons, and any broken hard parts...charge $2k...easy peasy. You're a far more advanced mechanic than I am and I've rebuilt 4 automatic trans with no problem. IMO it's harder to R&R a transmission than it is to rebuild them.
Busted knuckle, cuts and scrapes. ALL for content. thank you stay safe
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
Nothing more to say but Thanks for the video Wes. I can't add any more Kudos.
YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
When I first saw the chalk drawings on the ground, thought "What kind of animal massacre went down?".
Another fun adventure! Also, I had to go back to the start of the video when you had your head turned to make sure your hat said "DieHard". In the outro it looked to me like it may have been a parody "pieHard " hat, lol!
I would not have thought that the trans cooler fittings would have been loose. I drive a stick. LoL 😂. That and the dam starter is the only snag. Great show Wes as always. Take care and put a nother log 🪵 on the fire 🔥. Winter coming.
Thanks for the floor art! You’re doing quite well in your second career. 😂😂
Good one! We all learned something, eh? Keep doing what you do!
Lucky you have a smashing transmission man.
He is much like you wes, You always do the best you can for your customers :-D.
great job wes
So far, an awesome Sunday.
First off a Mustie1 vid popped up then a Watch Wes Work.
Wes is always fascinating with the way he figures out WTF is wrong and he admits his limitations.
Who's next I wonder.
that made me have flashbacks of changing the a4ld trans in my 90' mustang. didn't have all the fancy tools. did it on 4 jackstands in my driveway, by myself. i never have been a very strong guy, didn't have another person to help, and didn't have a transmission jack so getting that other trans mounted to the engine was a challenge! plenty of "OH CRAP!" moments when i thought that heavy sucker was gonna fall on me. used floor jacks, a little cart on rollers thing, and the cross member for leverage and a chiltons manual. i only hoped my mother could hear me scream from inside the house and come help me if something fell on me. oh, and i used a craftsman pear headed 3/8" ratchet with a breaker bar(it was a tough ratchet) on the driveshaft bolts. no fancy impact drivers. rough times man! lol.
Love learning what you work on...I am a bee person...we have a Dearth during Aug/Sept when there is little pollen and nectar for bees to work ......in others words not anything around....you da man Wess
Being a transmission tech for years I gave up fancy holders for the Jack and just welded a 4 x 8 plate with slots for the mount bolt to the Jacks platform and I would bolt the transmissions right to the trany jack. Much safer and tilting the platform can be done with zero sketchyness.
Great diagnosis and refit, good call on flushing transmission cooler by your transmission specialist 👍.
Definitely a black art in any vehicle gearbox to me each to his or her own.
Great job and photography Wes, thanks for sharing
Fun to hear your weather report.
Snow is so close up here.
Good to hear farming report.
Good note was most common carry out transmission failure was
Pump failure.
Great video. "Dearth" is a scarcity of something.
Hey I enjoyed watching your video, I wrench on all my vehicles and motorcycles and boats.Knowing how some Jobs go you are a true good mechanic and if it ever came to a point where I couldn't do it anymore I would not hesitate to bring it to u.
Nice work Wes, the mark of a true professional is knowing your limits and not being afraid to admit it. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Good work Wes don’t know why max wasn’t impressed lol lack of mice maybe 😂😂take care and all the best to the family 🔧🔧🔧👍👌
Transfusions no problem for Wes !
Man...you made the removal/installation of that transmission look easy! I'm pretty sure I would've had to pull out some of my former Navy vocabulary to complete that job. 😀
Great video.
Down here in the Deep South, I’m in the bottom right corner of Alabama. The cotton field across the street was recently sprayed with exfoliant, apparently they kill the leaves before harvesting the bolls, And the peanuts beside me haven’t been turned over yet. I’m debating sneaking over there after they turn them and grabbing a 5 gallon bucket of fresh peanuts and boiling them. Great vid love your no nonsense commentary.
Tasty!
noticed that you are over 200K..may more to come for your channel..and your beard looks great too..
