I'm not exactly sure how to describe this song other than by saying that it might be "swamp cabaret". It's definitely inspired by Cajun music and the idea was to create a feeling like it could all be taking place in New Orleans. I toured with a band called Hellblinki Sextet. They have a song called "Don't Go into the Woods". I feel that this is sort of a sister song to theirs. By the way, you'd never guess what I used to make those frog noises!!!! lol!

Lyrics:
Don't go by the river
If you love your wife
'Cause you'll make that girl a widow
And you'll cause her pain and strife
If you go by the river side,
You'll lose your l-l-l-l-life!
People by the river,
They know who's the boss
They'll get at fancy city folks
No matter what the cost
And if you go by the river side,
You'll end up l-l-l-l-lost!
There's a bat they call Lestat
Who will sink his teeth in you
You might meet a creature from a swampy black lagoon
And if the moon is full,
You might meet the loup-garou
Don't go by the river side,
You'll be sorry if you do!
A young man met a lady
And she made this fellow swoon
So they went on down to New Orleans
To elope under the moon
He took her by the river side,
To give her the heir l-l-l-loom!
Well the next day he got outta bed and
She wasn't by his side
He searched the quarter high and low
And the bayou far and wide
The locals say she ran away
But you know they l-l-l-l-lie!
There's a bat they call Lestat
Who will sink his teeth in you
You might meet a creature from a swampy black lagoon
And if the moon is full,
You might meet the loup-garou
Don't go by the river side,
You'll be sorry if you do!
Who shivers when they hear about voo-doo?
Don't lie to me, boy, I know you do!
You better tremble when you hear me call!
'Cause you'd make a lovely shrunken head
You'll be my favorite voo-doo doll!
Sting went by the river,
Now he slays on Bourbon Street
And there's that song by Concrete Blonde about where it's warm and green
And if you go by the river side,
You'll never l-l-l-l-leave!
There's a bat they call Lestat
Who will sink his teeth in you
You might meet a creature from a swampy black lagoon
And if the moon is full,
You might meet the loup-garou
Don't go by the river side,
(Don't go by the river side!)
I said don't go by that river side,
(He said don't go by that river side!)
Don't go by the river side,
(Why's that?)
'Cause you might meet me if you do! - Hudba
"Don't go by the riverside."
"Why's that?"
"cause you might meet me if you do"

"latest news: thousands of people started walking on riversides. We are still investigating this phenomenon"
Pawel Nowinski god I'd kill to meet Voltaire

I honestly have no idea. I've yet to find a genre it fits comfortably in.
sounds like jazz punk to me
Vampy accordian folk swing show-down blues?
Easy: "good music"
folk jazz punk?????
Maybe dark cabaret?
Aurelio needs to voice an animated villain in a musical.
Have you seen the vampair series its amazing
You mean billy and Mandy
There was that one episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
You kiddin'?! Billy and Mandy brought me here YEARS before I actually even showed up! Then again... I have a BRRRAAAAAIIIIIN!
Agree
Voltaire, I am very disappointed in you. I listened to this song and ever since, I have gone by every riverside that I could find, and not once have you shown up. What do you have to say for your lack of punctuality?
~MoV
D3ATHCARDNO7 4 years and not a single like? Geez lol
"'Cause you might meet me if you do!"
Key word:
"Might".
HAHAHAHA
@@buckett6106 The OG Scam :)
He's with those who can't call the Drvil think Death is a bit to much ;)
I also love that subtle tribute to David Bowie.
This song is a bop.
''You might meet me if you doooo''
We shall march to the riverside after the sunrise!
Being from Southern Louisiana, i can account for the legends. Heed the message, this isn't just for entertainment, he speaks truth.
Fun Fact: there are still reports in modern day Louisiana of the Rougarou/Loupgarou. Whether it's supernatural or a flesh and blood creature that's unknown.
I wanna go to that river side to meet Voltaire 😊
voltaire is an amazing artist with his own unique style and i respect that allot... keep it up voltaire
I started to play Metro Exodus for the first time and after an encounter by the river, this instantly started to play in my head!
Disney should hire him to play an antihero in one of their movies. Possibly a necromancer who can play guitar
Brendan Milburn Also a very good idea, though to be honest I like mine better. Maybe they should do both. In the same movie.
The credits are all under the CD, printed on the digipak. I don't print lyric books anymore because thousands of people post my lyrics on websites anyway, so I don't bother spending the money on that anymore.
It's in Ask Voltaire episode 4, but all of them are really entertaining and worth a watch.
Somehow I have never noticed the Vampire chronicles reference until now.
"Theres a bat they call Lestat who will sink his teeth in you"
Edit to fix the lyrics, thank you Voltair for clarifying
The lyric is actually, "There's a bat they call Lestat"
But yes, it's about THAT Lestat. ; )
@@TheLairofVoltaire Oh. I thought it was just random monster. Also how is your animation going.
This is one of my favorite songs now.
It's just so catchy, in my opinion.
*****
Hm. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!
Update:(Just read it. Loved it!)
I l-l-love this song!
anyone else have the sudden urge to go have a walk by the river?
Yes.
Don't Go By the River, go To the Bottom of the Sea.
+Captain FABULOUS on a black unicorn?
AmericanXero and you're gonna get thirsty with all that riding.
No I'll drink the laughter of small children of course.
Ponies brought me to Voltaire and now voltaires one of my favorite artist awesome music
"the people by the riverside they know who's the boss they'll get at fancy city folk no matter what the cost" are we talking about the south or the town of innsmouth?
Both
+Dreamer511 It does have a pretty Lovecraftian feel.
This song is about Lestat in particular.
Doesnt insmouth only have one s
And if you go by the river side you'll *DISCOVER ANCIENT, MADDENING SECRETS*
i love the frogs so much!!
I went by the riverside...didn't meet Voltaire there. Never been more disappointed. 😕
I first chanced upon this song after reading Jim Butcher's Fool Moon which, appropriately, features a loup-garou (as well as other, distinctly different werewolves). Pretty interesting coincidence.
This is like disney songs for adults, wonder why I like this so much hahahahaha
How could anyone NOT! And I'm just a teenager! And that song is brilliant... as is this one.
This song makes me miss living in New Orleans. Now I'm back to being just a Canadian.
I play this while I float down the James River sometimes. Never saw the loup-garou... probably should try it in the bayou instead... and omg I love old classic rock, so the Sting/Bourbon Street reference was perfect!
The witch doctor in this song, and how the lyrics warn about two guys whose marriages were lost to his mischief, and however it was that he wronged this "Sling" guy on Bourbon Street, and the lyrics "You'll make a lovely shrunken head (as in loss of sound mind)...You'll be my favorite voodoo doll (as in loss of sound body)." It reminds me, since Lent or Easter this year, of the kind of reverend who favors Mardi Gras over other holidays. What's more, tonight I drove by the church of one such pastor, starting to play Don't Go By The River on CD in my car, and there it was, no kidding, a RIVER of water running from the church property out into the street, with me driving through the water as the song played. Epic coincidental moment.
Oh boy…
Voltaire is his own genre.
more than a decade later still come back to this album fucking love it.
That has got to be the coolest picture I had ever seen. Seriously, it's so kick ass.
just going to listen this again and again for boost the number of view :3 too good
I need an animated short of the last line where we find out the singer is the Loup-Garou. and when he says " 'cause you might meet me if you do!" he leans forward and partially turns into a wolf.
I love that song
"Sting went by the river, Now he slays on Bourbon Street" HOLY! That line for me just made this song from really fun to fantastic!
Today was solo day in my Chorus class, I sang this, everyone clapped for three straight minutes, I think I made about fifteen new Voltaire fans!
@Kingcobra1211 Technically it's not a reference to Queen of the Damned. I mention Lestat, but I learned of him through Interview with a Vampire which was the first book in the series.
@Jarrad1290 That if fantastic! Congratulations on a job well done!
I'm pretty sure it's so the Lyrics fit, but the Loup Garou doesn't only change under a full moon. It's more synonymous with Shapeshifter lore than it is with Werewolf Lore. The Loup Garou is a man that can change at will into a Wolf.
I'm not saying I hate the song because of it, I love the song, and I was addicted to it since I first heard it, I just thought I'd drop that little fact bomb on everyone. Keep up the good work, Voltaire!
Isn't it just great when a search for excellent music proves fruitful? From what if listened to so far "When you're Evil" is my favorite, however this is a close second. For my 2 cents worth, "Such great music; what a legend!"
Voltaire is apparently awake all hours of the night doing his many wondrous works. His songwriting, his novel writing, toy design, web comic design, teaching...need I go on? When does this god have time to sleep?
Yes, please do! ; )
I just love the style of this. All of his music, really. So unique and catchy, as well as hilarious.
its nice to know that Voltaire still has that air of lunacy in his songs.....
i get so happy when he references the vampire chronicles
Then I'll have to go with a possibly sappy/too-poetic answer.
You write to fill an emotional void. Whether it be a need to cry, to laugh, or just know you're not alone in something. There's no genre to describe that, because you don't limit yourself to one market; there's more than just money in writing songs, for your mind, even if it is a major factor. No matter how dark, they're always from the heart.
And in my mind, that's the best kind of music.
This is great for reading Anne Rice's vampire Lestat to.
Finally hearing "Dont go down to the woods tonight" by Hellblinki, and seeing how amazing it is, I think it's fair that it got this 'sequel' of sorts
@ThePossiblyInsane Concrete Blonde had a song about being killed by a vampire after going down the New Orleans where it's warm and green.
Sting had a song about becoming a werewolf when the moon shines over Bourbon Street.
I believe Aurelio Voltaire is the least stuck up artist I've had the pleasure of listening to. Although I know he is a busy man he still takes time out of his day to reply to fans. I don't know a much better way to keep your fan base happy. :] Love you Aurelio :D
Here because of the new League Champion coming out - the River King~
+Batty Crescentshine I don't think so, because loup-garou is a lycanthrope.
Lol I know the translation but the tune just makes me think of Tahm
As a Tahm mainer, I approve of this.
Thank you so much for uploading your music.
If it weren't for this vid (and a comic somebody made based on it) I would never had stumbled upon your great music or bought that album!
radio doesn't deserve this
Voltaire makes music. Really, really awesome music. He's too great for a genre.
Damn Voltaire, you really should make a good world tour and come to Chile. It would be an amazing night listening and singing your songs with friends and beer =D
I'm loving the Interview With The Vampire reference to Lestat.
Actually its a comic called "Don't go into the Everfree Forest."
Its about a show where Zecora, Octavia, and some other musicians(can't remember names) sing a ponified version of this song called "Don't Go by the Everfree Forest."
Its pretty good and I think someone made a video showing the comic.
. . .But I want meet Voltaire. ;)
i lived next to a pond for 16 years, now I'm concerned
You're already lost, buddy
People should be gratefull this kind of songs were used on comics/pmv, is a way to become slightly more popular.
there are so many good songs on this cd for dancing lindy to! I love it!
I'm glad someone caught that! It's a nod to a great song! ; )
It doesn't seem to be in the cards, but Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and possibly Perth are looking good for August.
I was thinking this might be a parody of "Shall we gather at the river," but I was presently surprised.
Favorite song by one of my favorite musicians in one of my favorite albums of all time. You sir are truly amazing.
Last line of the song implies that the singer is actually the 'monster'...O_O
Witch Doctor
I wanna see an animation of the last line of David from Camp Camp singing to the kids and when they go "whys That?"
and as he says "you might meet me if you do" with an evil grin, he leans over the fire and color shifts into Daniel."
Voltaire back in Montreal plz cant wait to see you live
i like how every song on this album tells a little story
Some time ago, there was a comic drawn that basically told this story, song and all, but the lyrics where changed to Pony themes and such. They linked to this post for the credit, and the rest is history. :)
Me, with depression: 😔
Me after this song: 😌
Thank goodness for (un)dead dance tunes.
This sounds really good. Thank you for making such wonderful music.
REALLY!?!? I live in right by Philadelphia and a never met another fan!
God, Like my experiences with Social Distortion I just LOVE the overall FLOW of your music, man! From the guitar strumming the catchy rythms to the drum sychronization and I honestly lose it when you add the orchestra or the strings into it!
Somebody asked me what my idea of your music was. The easiest thing to say was that it is like the baroque-esque version of rock mixed with different genres. Strange in an honestly beautiful way. Just honestly great man, loved all of your work, keep it up!
i like how every album has its own style *-*
this is legendary and just amazing :)
love this music ..
This song sounds kinda like "Oh Lord (Wake the Dead)" Impressive tune, Voltaire! *raises glass*
Hey Voltaire this song is amazing, it makes me wanna dance and sing. it also makes me proud to live in the new orleans area. been a fan of yours since billy and mandy so please keep making great music.
I love Anne Rice! Voltaire your music just makes me happy to listen to, love how they tell stories throughout. And I hope you actually see this comment!
love this song
WHAT AN AMAZING SOUND,LOVE IT!
I was so excited when I saw the link from a pony comic brought me to a Voltaire song.
In all honest,y you need to come to Pennsylvania sometime. Plenty of Voltaire fans here, or so I see. :)
There is a type of wooden frog sculpture with ridges on its back, when you stroke the frogs back with a wooden stick it makes a frog noise. Its one theory sounds very similar to these noises.
Sorry if someone already answered your question. There's a fan comic of one of the characters singing a cover of this song and the link was posted for the original here.
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy brought me here. Anyone else?
When I first heard Brains my mental image of him as a kid was him being this near dead old black man with a short grey beard who would always wear sunglasses and was clad in a yellow suit. Then after playing Aqw as a slightly bigger kid and seeing his cool gothic pirate avatar I saw how off I was.
colour animatic on newgrounds.com, its a frame by frame video of his song when youre evil, involving a rabbit and a doomed soul
Night Strike no then you want brains
"Brains" brought me to the channel a year or two ago. I ain't looked back.
As a Cajun I approve of this song.
I'm pretty sure I covered that in one of the Ask Voltaire vlogs. Does anyone know which vlog it was?
Man, i love your great work, what a catchy and delectable tune. I have always wished to see an official music video for any of your songs, that'd be awesome, i bet... All in. Keep it up!
best song I have heard yet
Actually, it's not. Voltaire said and showed in another video (can't remember which) that it was made by running a stick down the roof of a little model building thing. I don't remember exactly what it was, but the roof was kinda like the backs of frog rasps, it had layers (gee, I don't know how to explain).
@DrowSoldier33 Yes it is!
Please do come to Sydney in August, my friend and I would be ecstatic if you did.
I love the Interveiw With the Vampire reference, whether or not it was intentional~!
I love all your music, Voltaire, keep coming up with amazing song!
Amazing song as per usual, must say I love the Loup Garou useage, ever since I learned of its meaning a while back I've never heard it used in a song or such, just fanastic, Ia tip my tophat to you sir!
Voltaire you are absolutely amazing in every aspect. I had made a promise to my girlfriend to sing to her each time I drink, I always find myself singing your songs....Though "All women are crazy" might have been a bad idea. :P
I'd love to see you make a "Meaning and Origin" video for this song.
My family up in Alabama has a swampy area in their neighborhood... My cousin Abby wanted to walk with her friends down their so, of course, her older brother Evan I had to go with her cause their are more than a few creeps where she lives. I found myself singing this song, Abby and the other girls heard it and got scared so we went home... Evan however recognised the song and high-fived me. I love my family... And your songs! She is still scared to walk by murky waters.... >:3
Good ears! There is indeed a tuba in the song.
I covered that in one of the Ask Voltaire videos I think.
Te amo voltaire !!!
Thank you, Voltaire!
I can post a link to it when i'm done so you could see, if you'd like.
