In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Alaskan Malamutes that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 75 to 100 pounds
Height: 1 foot to 11 inches 2 feet 1 inch tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years
When you first see an Alaskan Malamute, it's easy to be impressed by their large stature, wolf-like facial markings, and huge plumed tail waving at you. It's often believed that Malamutes are part wolf. They might play a wolf on TV or in the movies, but in truth, they're all domestic dogs.
The Alaskan Malamute possesses tremendous strength, energy, endurance, independence, and intelligence. They were originally sought to pull heavy sleds over long distances as well as to hunt seals and polar bears. Now chosen primarily for companionship, Alaskan Malamutes succeed in several dog sports, including conformation, obedience competition, weight pulling, skijoring, backpacking, and recreational sledding.
When they're not "woo wooing" or pulling you on your inline skates or watching TV with you, they're probably raiding the trash, surfing your kitchen counters for something good to eat, or digging a nice cool hole in the backyard.
Malamutes regard everyone they meet as their friends. If you're looking for a watchdog, this is not the breed for you. A Malamute's size might scare off an intruder, but that's about the only protection you'll get out of them.
Alaskan Malamutes do best in situations in which they have plenty of room and opportunities to exercise so they don't become bored and restless. Their independent nature often causes them to be labeled as stubborn or stupid, but their intelligence shines through with the correct training. If the Alaskan Malamute is the right breed for you, they will give you years of enjoyment as an active playmate and companion who keeps their puppy joie de vivre well into adult life.

I used to have a male Malamute, as well as a female for a short time. The maleâs name was Tundra and the femaleâs name was Tehya. Tundra had brown/blue eyes and lived for 13 years. We sadly had to have him be put down due to him getting hip pain. Tehya was younger when she passed and we believe she got sick somehow with something she found when outside. Both were beautiful, fluffy and friendly pups. Itâs been about 8-9 years since they passed. I plan on finding another Malamute someday because they are absolutely fantastic dogs!
mals don't have blue eyes !!!
Anab Waqar It is possible for them to have blue eyes. Like I said, my dog had a blue and a brown eye.
MunchieTime it most likley was bread with something else
NoobNaster69 I know what bread my dogs were and what they looked like. My oldest dog I had was an Alaskan Malamute with 1 brown eye and 1 blue eye. Itâs not impossible for any dog to have the DNA to have different colored eyes.
@@MUNCH13T1M3 trust me!! it wasn't a pure breed mal !! nothing wrong with having a mixed mal .
I saw phil and niko!! đđđ lifewiththemalamutes â„ïžâ„ïž

I just got a malamute I adopted her bexause her previous owners couldn't handle her but shes now in a loving caring home she is 6 years and 3 months ! She is the most calm dog I have ever had WHEN loved and cared properly for
Also you have to be very dominant or they think they are in control all around an amazing dog
That's very interesting, getting one at that age and having no issues or problems with her. Must have a very good temperament and you must be a very good and experienced dog owner. Good you got your alpha status in from the beginning. They're great dogs, ours being a 7 month old male at present.
Dude i really wished to have an alaskan malamute but i cant for me you dude are lucky to have one
If it was in Oregon, I gave up a malamute around the same time. It wasn't because I couldn't handle her. I just knew she would do better in another home because I was about to be homeless. I couldn't let her live in a car with me when I knew from experience she would adapt very quickly to a new home. Before I lost everything I traveled a lot and had her stay with a lot of dog sitters and they all said she adapted within hours.
If you're her adoptive family I would love to know how she's doing. I miss her. I named her Lagatha, after "Lagertha" of Viking lore. All her brothers and sisters were also given viking names, as were two generations of grandparents. As far as I know, the adoptive family renamed her "Mischa", and I want them to know that goes against her family naming tradition.
@@sunnirae1900 You did the right thing.
We have an Alaskan malamute and heâs absolutely amazing guy .!! So loving , incredibly smart and completely loyal.
They are definitely amazing dogs. How old is yours, just out of interest? Ours is a 7 month old male. Very smart but definitely not loyal anymore hahaha, he'll wonder off to talk to just about anybody now, but very loyal in the sense he'll come back on the "come" command, so guess that's loyalty haha.
So is mine ! I absolutely love his personality!! Everything about him đ„°
"they are not good watch or guard dogs" well when a hostile sees this baaaad boy they aint gunna be hostile no more
Yeh I wouldnât mess with them
The only reason that my dogs would be good at doing the guardian thing is if they made a big deal of a burglar breaking into the house while greeting them and expecting treats and cuddles.
If they robbers brought a dog with them that's another problem and is a police and animal control issue.
bs, I am an inuk woman, don't put down a Mahalmut, they are my ancestors walk, and our sledge dogs.
Californians: "I live in a hot climate and I know this dog would suffer during the summers here but I'm still getting one because it's cute."
It's really not that bad if you have a two story or raise them as a puppy so their coat grows accordingly. Also ac. they'll find cool corners or under beds since they are quite smart.
In no way am I defending being a Californian but we do have air conditioners and walk them at night lol. But I get your point, the main problem we encounter here is small women walking âGiant breedâ malamutes, Iâve been bit twice stopping a fight between our dogs because the woman was overpowered. This dog breed is not for your typical Californian thatâs for sure.
All of California isnât always hot. In Northern California itâs only hot during the summer months.
I lived with a Malamute in Vegas. She would lay in the sun when it was °110. Their fur protects them from the cold AND heat.
Do a little experiment for me. Wrap your hand in a shirt. Then hold it over a fire. Do you feel anything? No, you don't.
Lol you chose the worst state⊠California has 4 climates depending on what part youâre in. If you think Northern California and Southern California share the same weather. You might wanna ask your mom how many times you were dropped
2 years ago, my husband and I brought 2 older dogs into our home. Both are Alaskan Malamutes . Our female is now 14 years old and plays like she is a puppy. She will talk back to us and can be stubborn but we do get her to listen. Our male is 9 yrs old and has Timber Wolf in him. He is very calm , laid back, always alert and watching, a gentleman especially to me. Both dogs love to be near me especially if I am outside and sleep on the floor next to my side of the bed each night. I seriously love both of them and consider myself the lucky one to have them in my life.
Are you planning to pet one of these large arctic sled dogs?
Let us know about your Malamute's unique personality in the comments.
You used my video without telling me... 3.:21-3:27
Mine speaks a lotđ and it's so adorable
i wishd id had 7 alaskan malamutes 5 studs and 2 females
I have one! Heâs currently 4 months old and has floppy ears. He loves to run but is very scared of the garbage can. Heâs a little escape artist. My malamute before this was the sweetest guy ever. He was great off leash and he LOVED the snow.
My favorite thing about malamutes is the love they bring your life, I've never met a dog breed that just inspires love like malamutes đ€đ€đ€
My malamute is a 6 year old male, stands 28 inches at the shoulder & weighs 135lbs. Best family dog but we gotta stay dominant, he likes to push the line to see what he can get away with, so smart!
I got a malamute x German shepherd puppy yesterday and he is so gorgeous and loving yet he is only 8 weeks old. Has settled straight in to his new surroundings and we are so happy to have him in our family. He is going to be a big gorgeous dog treated with lots of love and canât wait to train him. Iâm looking forwards to the long walks along the beaches where i live. The whole family have fallen for him in less than 24hrs. I spent the night sleeping on the floor with him and he snuggled up to međ„° looks like Iâm on the floor for a few nights to make him feel loved and not alone after leaving his siblings and mother. He bounces towards me like a spring lamb which is so adorable đ„°â€ïžđ
i encountered my first malamute yesterday. normally i am really not a dog person but i immediately fell in love with this huge 9 month old dog... đ„°
if i ever get a dog i will get this breed i am sure!
they are gorgeous!
Just imagine the world ran out of fuel..these were the most essential beings..unbelievable...right.
I kept wanting to cry. I love my malamute so much.
These are bears mistaken as dog I guess đ
i wishd id had 7 alaskan malamutes 5 studs and 2 females

Favorite trait...closes thing to have a being from the wild.
5:11 how to ruin a malamutes coat. Never ever shave a mal unless its for surgery This guys is honestly reading something from a book.
So very true. I've actually heard of people shaving their Malamutes, as they believe they will blow their coats less etc. Amazes me how people do not research or understand a dog breed before getting one, and not to just get one because it looks cute etc.
do you have any advice for a family that's getting a malamute?
@@asare2285 Do as much research as you can. If it's your first dog I would probably not advise it. They are great for some but not for others. There's lots of info on Google and stories to read from owners. If you have lots of time to exercise, train, and keep an eye on them then they can be great dogs. If you don't they could be difficult and problematic. So make sure you can provide what the breed needs as any problems are almost always down to the owners not the dog or breed.
@@d.b.cooper5775 ok thank you this really helps would a beagle be better or a malamute?
@@asare2285 Never owned any Beagle's so wouldn't be fair for me to say. Most obedient dog I have ever owned though was a chocolate labrador. Amazing family dogs also.
If you want a malamute you have to consider how easily they get hot. They arenât the most playful and active dogs as an adult, but they love snow. Their either are obsessed with the water or hates it. They are very gentle. The arenât cuddling dogs but they love their family and when everyone is at home. Ticks are very hard to find on them.
My Malamute is currently 7 months old, we also have a 5 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Totally 2 different breed of dogs character wise. Which bring about plenty of entertainment, characteristics, challenges & rewards. You can just imagine the energy of a 7 month male Malamute and that of a 5 year old Staffy. Plus as you know, Malamutes love the chillier cold climate and not afraid of that or the rain, whereas the Staffy, loves the summer heat and hates the rain :).
ohhhh please tell me more as I have a Staffy and getting a malamute soon..are malamutes very energetic and restless? my staffie is a lazy boy, oh god, gives me absolutely no trouble, no mess, doesn't chew/destroy things..but a bit reactive to other dogs
@@julesandmika Heya, cool you'll be getting a Malamute soon. I wouldn't say they are restless but they are very energetic, so need plenty of exercise and stimulation naturally. If they do not get this, then yes, you would probably have a restless Malamute on your hands. Our Staffie is definitely getting a chilled lazy soul now. Still enjoys her walks out but loves her bed more now I think :) đ haha. All the best
@@Livingwiththeodddogs thanks for replying! seems like they make a good combination :)
I have one and he is such an amazing dog !!! I absolutely love him đ„°
Amazing breed, love how talkative they are. But never shave Husky, Malamute or any other doublecoated dog, it will not help them to cool down.. It will only make it worse. I personally would not get a Husky if i would live in a hot weather region..
You never shave any dog. Unless for some medical reason. A dogs coat protects them from the elements wether they are double coated or not.
My Malamute lived for 9œ years. He lived in Malamute paradise paradise. 7,000 ft altitude. In the summer he went on twice week afternoon fishing trips, and one long pack mule camping trip. He loved de-boned cooked trout. Later in life he had pancreatic problems with diarreah. It was treated with Viokase powder daily.
He drank much more water if he heard it running. Doing so would have extended his life I feel.
He hated cats and small dogs with a passion. Unlike Huskies, Malamutes aren't neurotic unless they are raised in a weird environment.
He visited a Husky kennel with me. He stumbled across a part, fantastically well groomed darling with blue eyes. What did he do? He flipped upside down with his paws in motion and made woo-woo-woo noises.
Absolutely awesome
I have lived with Alaskan Malamutes for over 30 years now...currently I live with 4, but in the past I've had as many as 12 at the same time. Then they were all trained to pack equipment on multi-week photo and fishing expeditions into the High Sierras, the North Cascades, and Siskiyou Wilderness areas. I have very few human friends, don't miss much about society these days as my Mals provide me with all the entertainment, and companionship I could want...and more! They are my shadows, my best friends and love me as much or more than any person could...unconditionally! Ahh'woooooooooooooooâ€â€â€â€!
I grew up with three of these amazing dogs! And they can be very protective of children, as my dad's malamute, Rambo would not let anyone he didn't know near me. He also knew one of my aunts was afraid of him, so he'd growl at her for funsies. Hercules was my malamute and he'd sing for me whenever I talked to him. Shy, was my mom's and no one ran in our yard or she'd tackle them.
On my The Sims 4 my sim has adopted this breed and they are hard work :D.. Keeps on running off even tho my sim plays with her all time and always getting petted and all the attention given to her.. Cute as anything to be fair :D
Almost as cool as real life!
I love these giant clouds
I own a giant Wooley Alaskan Malamute known as a M'Loot. His AKC name is KINGFISHERS ZAR NEE BLIZZARD. ZAR is 195 lbs and comes from a long line of Giants. His great grandfather was Koda a giant red at 200 lbs and parents are ZIVA and CHARGER. I Noticed in your Video you had a number of the M'Loot line featured. Also I noticed you had Phil and Nico from Living with Malamutes in the video.
I totally enjoyed your clip and found it included a lot of information on the Malamute history not included in other videos I've watched.
To finish I have had ZAR since he was 8 weeks old and flown into San Francisco to me from Alaska. He is now 6 years old with his 7th birthday coming in December 2020.
I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed to your site. Thankyou
I thought this dog was a chubby husky pup xD
Well, I have one now. thanks for the video.
My malamute is 7 months and 95 pounds đł....he LOOKS grown but heâs still a baby đ peopleâs reaction to hearing his age and size is hilarious.
Ah that's cool. We have a 7 month old male Malamute and we get the same reaction as you do. Giant babies hahaha
Sounds like you have a Giant Mallie. How much does he weigh now?
TheCribbdaddy Heâs about 120 now...heâs almost 1 years old. His strength and agility is unbelievable! Heâs not a leash puller on purpose đ but if he just happens to lay down and youâre holding the leash taut, youâre going down too đđ speaking from experience!
I think you might want to get him a sprint sled and X-back harness from Howling Dog. If you have kids theyâll love it.
TheCribbdaddy definitely! Iâm going to put them in the Christmas parade this year!
Philly bear and Niko and Milo !!! They in the video too :D
sooooo cute I just bought one
good video i enjoyed that it was very informative, my malamute is nearly six and its been a hard six years because i could not find much information before i got him and how they are. I did however find out by myself that they dont like there own male gender when he was 18 month and he came across another male malamute and turned into mike tyson
i wishd id had 7 alaskan malamutes 5 studs and 2 females

I LIKED IT
I have a Alaska malamuthe she is so beutyful i lov malamuth đ§â€ïžđ¶
We love Alaskan malamute
These are wonderful dogs, but not for everyone. I've had two and will consider another. They are loving companions, loyal, and more.
â they arent great guard dogs and protective dogs â
Me: but you dont want to mess with them
You are right, these dogs aren't guard dogs, they're too damn friendly with people.
They will protect, out of instinct to a certain degree.
Their size is enough ato scare people away
I'm here due to my favorite "Dawang"đ
i have one and he is SUCH A BABY. a bug fluffer but can be a poopoo head sometimes. like sometimes i'm having morning greeting he comes and sits on my lap and doesn't get off. he is a giant malamute so he is going to get over 100lbs. he's already 105=110lbs and he's only 9 months! we got him 6 or so months ago when he was 30 pounds
You should say that the heights you gave are a MINIMUM - there is no maximum height to the breed, I met one at dog training which stood nearly 3 foot at the withers, a HUGE dog, but perfectly acceptable in the AKC breed ring. Also, the breed was featured very prominently in the movie "Snow Dogs" where their personality was described to a T - "they may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but they can pull anything"
I've owned Siberian Huskies. Arctic dogs are definitely not for everyone. They have distinctive traits And can require a lot of work. Yes they're cute, and this is often why people buy them, but they don't research the breed. So many end up as rescue dogs because it's not like owning a more traditional breed like a labrador etc. Unless you're fully committed I don't think they're a good choice for novice dog owners.
im gettin a Malamute soon so cant wait to love him to fluff balls lol
Can u do the swiss sheperd next plz
When you was bringing up movies how did you forget about one of the best vampire movies that was ever made . The Lost Boys that came out in 1987 that was the first time that i ever seen a malamute and from that point on leaving the movies i had it in mind that i was going to get me a malamute thats how of a impact that breed had on me .
Wasn't her name nook nook or nanook

one wise man quoted that...
Malamutes shed twice a year...
6 months in the summer and 6 months in the winter.
We have two German Shepherd/Malamutes and we live in Michigan. They LOVE the snow and HATE when we bring them back inside. It's funny how their malamute personality overpowers their German Shepherd one. They love everyone, very aloof, stubborn, and constantly want outside when it snows.
i have a ten year old malamute and she still acts like she did when she was four
I WISHD ID HAD DOG LIKE THAT
Opposites attract, personally I will say itâs a perfect dog for a big Samoan family
My sister had one that was dark, and beautiful blue eyes.
That probably wasnât a malamute. Blue eyes r not a typical trait
Philly bear and Niko!
Great video, but I'm not sure where all the facts are got from. My Malamute never once had a bath and was always absolutely spotless. Their fur is self cleansing. Mine never had his teeth cleaned and vets all said he had perfect teeth. But he did have 3 dental sticks a day.
Yes ..I am friendly!!
If you guy's notice, Mally on Asian region bigger and had thick fur than from US, anyone know why cause the different?
Planning to get either an Alaskan Malamute or Siberian Husky! But sadly I live in a hot climate so it will be harder but I still want them!
