I've been mourning my last dog and had decided that I wasn't doing to be a dog owner anymore. You inspired me to go to my local shelter and adopt a young dog (less than a year) off their forget me not list. He's pretty much spent his whole life in a shelter. He has a lot to learn about the world, but I want to give kudos to the shelter staff and volunteers who clearly gave him a lot of love and attention. He is a happy, sweet guy who is anxious to please and learns quickly. He gets along great with other dogs and loves people - so he must have had plenty of opportunities to meet both. He is an awesome dog and I don't understand why no one picked him before I did (other than black dog syndrome).

I adopted a 4 year old Aussie in 2020. She had been rescued from a puppy mill and had been used as a breeder dog. She had been certainly neglected, if not abused. All she wanted to do was lay in a corner & be left alone. I gave her time & space, and slowly she started to come out of her corners & lay in the middle of a room (that was a big deal). She quickly learned to LOVE her walks. It took almost a year before she would come to me seeking attention & petting -- up until then she tolerated it, but didn't really want it. Fast foward to NOW: she is a certified therapy dog, LOVES kids, loves going with me everywhere in the car, and is the best companion. She is so gentle and sweet, everyone loves her everywhere we go. Rescue dogs are SO worth the time & effort!!! Please adopt.

I have an aussie that I rescued several years ago. I can tell you from experience that she is sitting in that window because she needs to feel in control. These dogs are extremely intelligent and one thing for certain is they like to feel that they are in control. From what little I know about shepherd dog breeds, that is such a typical thing. They are literally bred to keep watch, and "heading to the high ground" must be instinctual whenever they think things aren't 100% okay (even if things are, like being in a safe environment but they don't know it's safe yet).
They are so intelligent, too, and I do wonder if they can imagine situations and let their imagination run away with them, particularly if they perceive something to be wrong. I might well be, er, barking up the wrong tree, but they're so smart it wouldn't surprise me!

Paige looks to be an Aussie border collie mix that’s very popular with ranchers and farmers here in rural Tx. They are devoted to their humans and will often be found going everywhere in the ranch vehicles totally untethered. They wait patiently for their return and will not move until released by him/her. Also they are bred to be livestock and people “watchers” and should never be isolated in enclosed environments. It does create confusion and fear. They definitely need a job and inclusion in errand activities around and about town to fulfill their unique breeding attributes.

And she wound up seeing Moonie, a Cairn mix who was on a site called AMSTERDOGS in NYC. She has had Moonie now, for almost a decade. When we home cared our mom (2015-2017) who had dementia and was in her 90's....she lived with my sister. And Moonie was a part of the care team. I adopted my last dog from the shelter, FULL Malamute! His name was Kanuk, and he was THE most loving, caring, PREY DRIVEN character I have ever owned. It was a situation of my dad had chickens and a large portion of them are no more 😢. I moved out with him and he was my best friend for over two more years until he started having seizures and had no more quality of life, so I had to put them down....😢
I miss that dog every day!!!

Huskies are very prey driven and smart. I live next to a field they let over grow, cut, and bale for hay about 2-3 times a year and this causes field mice sometimes. My husky/malamute has caught a few mice that have found their way inside and getting him to drop it is like opening the jaws of life with your bare hands, when I can normally take anything out of his mouth. I have to temp him with a treat to drop it. I've seen him push his food bowl into the middle of the kitchen floor so he could watch and draw one out after he caught one the day before. They're 4 year olds in fur coats.

The thing about Malamutes and snow dogs generally is they are so different and get returned to shelters repeatedly bc ppl didn't do their research. Tho they often resemble wolves, they are not like wolves. They're very smart, ppl oriented goofballs, often opinionated & hard to train. Also many communicate via language so you have to enjoy verbal discourse. I have to think a sense of humor goes a long way to cohabit with them.

Paige reminds me of my first cat. Midnight was a private adoption, which is how I know for a fact she was abused. Midnight took a month to come out from hiding while we were awake. She was the sweetest most loyal cat I had for thirteen years.
Even if they don't flip that switch and become confident and loving, it's still so rewarding to see what progress they can make. My bunny Ellie was found abandoned outside. She acts like she knows the world is an inherently dangerous place. There isn't a lot of trust there, even though we have had her for 7 years. And I'll admit I would get down about it sometimes. I just wanted a fluffer who wanted cuddles. But the trust she does show? The joy and comfort? That was hard earned. (And I adopted an old boy from the shelter who adores cuddles, to fill that hole.)

@DeniseEggertwaterlily The variety takes its name from the Mechelen region (called Malines in French), where it was the predominant coat type used by the local shepherds
1956, the current breed standard was adopted, and it specified the four varieties known today; the Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, and Tervuren.

My grandmothers dog used to sit on the windowsill and wait for my grandfather to come back home from work. I know many dogs that sit on the windowsill and wait, because they can see very well from there when the owner is coming. I think that might be what she was doing, sitting on the windowsill and waiting for her owner to come back.

Rocky I'm sure you are very rewarded visiting shelter dogs. I personally would probably cry every time when I got home doing what you do.

@21:36 What a surprise to see a WV shirt from a shelter in California. Hat's off to this fine gentleman that has risked his life and sacrificed his body and mind for a war that ultimately lead to nothing.

We have 3 dogs, 1 cat and 11 chickens. Only 2 can be trusted around our chickens, so we just keep the ladies in a chicken tractor every day so they can get their exercise, dust baths, and access to more grass and bugs. Some dog breeds are just bred for hunting, so i wouldn't expect them to resist the chickens.
I am so happy Rosie got adopted out again 💓!
I'm rooting for Paige! We have a border collie, a border collie heeler mix, and a boxer beagle mix...two were rescues and we LOVE herding dogs...so intelligent!
