  • On September 27, Elon Musk announced a bold new plan to establish a permanent human habitation on Mars with his company SpaceX. It's one of the most ambitious schemes Musk - or humanity in general - has ever attempted, relying on huge advances in both rocketry and spaceship construction.

      You know I see where you're coming from, but I'll be damned if he wasn't the first major player to join the auto industry in a hundred years and nearly the same for rocketry. The man has a purpose in life, and I don't think he'll accept anything but success.

      Riding a mechanical bull on mars would be awesome. Lower gravity means a pretty long throw when you get tossed off. Other awesome things for low g would be parqour, swimming and with a thick enough atmosphere skydiving without a parachute. (Probably underground as mars's low surface gravity means it will probably never hold an atmosphere as thick as ours.)

NASA has many programs with a very small budget in contrast to private companies who can put much of their investments into a single project. I admire musk but if our government wanted us to go to mars and properly funded NASA we'd be there by 1999

      Why is nobody ever talking about the Germans who actually provided the rocket concept? Compared to that, 80 years of progress made is quite small. Just because the Germans lost the war and the Americans stole the technology, doesnt mean people should go through life not realizing every and ALL space development is because of them.

He said they will build not only a few of those, they will build as many as they can, thousands so to speak. Add competitors to the calculation and the price will drop even more. Work hard to have as many belongings to sell as possible and you might go in a decade.

    When the AI is ready, we will start terraforming missions using robots to do most of the work and a few human personnel to supervise it. The experience from the terraforming missions will help us figure out how to send a bigger amount of humans. From there, colonization will grow rapidly and space exploration will grow exponentially. It might be very provable that we will figure out how to "condition" a planet to be inhabited before we actually find the perfect Earth clone.

    • @nekonari22
      @nekonari22 Před 7 lety +22

      By that time, we'll be so good at virtualizing our conscientiousness, that *we* will be there teraforming, in the robotic body. Then we'll slowly accept our new mechanical body, and abandon our meaty body. Then we'll stop caring about teraforming since mechanical body can survive in much more hostile environments. We'll just care about exploring, exploring uncharted corners of the galaxy, and when that gets boring, we'll just live in virtual worlds, with automated and endless backup system creating copies of our simulations throughout the galaxy so our virtual simulations will keep going on. In the simulation, we'll be living in 1999, watching The Matrix thinking what an amazing movie that is, dazzled at the possibility future holds, promise of interstellar travel and space colonization... and never know that WE'RE ALREADY IN A SIMULATION.

      Gee, I don't know. What about just for the heck of it? Maybe they'd build one for fun, think it's so fun to muck around in it, then later as time passes, they lose interest and move on and die. Simulation may continue with all those simulated minds living in it, never knowing about their reality.
      For all we know, statistically speaking (according to Elon Musk), we're already in a simulation.

    • @leoncampa
      @leoncampa Před 7 lety +1

      leo ulreich the trip would take about 3-6 months depending on how far you are from the planet at launch.
      Humans have survived more than a year in the ISS with few problems, so it is safe to assume that although the amount of radiation would be much higher than on earth, your odds of suffering from it in the long term would only be a fraction higher than on Earth.
      To put it into perspective, a human born in Alaska, making the one year trip to space, and heading back to live the rest of his life in Alaska (most of it indoors during winter), would receive the same amount of radiation in their lifetime as a human born in Florida, going out on a frequent basis both during winter and summer and occasionally tanning under the sun on a beach.
      Now for those living on Mars, the odds of suffering from radiation would dramatically increase due to the lack of magnetosphere, hence the first colonies would likely have to settle underground until an artificial magnetic field can be set up
