- On September 27, Elon Musk announced a bold new plan to establish a permanent human habitation on Mars with his company SpaceX. It's one of the most ambitious schemes Musk - or humanity in general - has ever attempted, relying on huge advances in both rocketry and spaceship construction.

this guys is the closest thing to iron man that we will see in our lives
he was even in the second iron man movie
Closest thing to 💩
Or you could just see the Iron Man films ;)
there are others.
except he does not have the suit.
He's either completely insane, an incredible genius, or both.
You know I see where you're coming from, but I'll be damned if he wasn't the first major player to join the auto industry in a hundred years and nearly the same for rocketry. The man has a purpose in life, and I don't think he'll accept anything but success.
both
both
Insane. Simple.
just stupid
Our grandkids will learn about him in their history classes.
And if life extension development goes well, he'll be alive for them to see him continuing to push the boundaries.
Grandkids from Earth as well as Mars.
There will be a statue of him on Mars
Sherry JYJ don't forget pluto
The man who brought the human race to his new home
Vasileski88 they’ll be learning about his fail self driving cars.
Congrats to Elon for becoming a much better speaker. Serious improvement over his Tesla announcement.
Yeah, he used to sound extremely nervous. The X and 3 demos i found difficult to watch, but this is a whole new, Elon. Great job!
why does he sound so nervous tho? dont they teach them how to make stand ups ?
He's not nervous, that's just how he speaks. Watch any 1 on 1 interview with him. It seems like his brain is just thinking far faster than he can verbally articulate.
This is quite a common phenomenon among highly intelligent individuals. Their brain thinks faster than they can speak/type.
His nervousness during the tesla speech was an anti-sell. TM3 has tesla autodrive technology but it needs a software update, plus he is in production hell
Will there be WiFi on mars? That's the real beef or bust decider
I heard it will take a month to load a single video or something like that.... So until Mars has its own satellites and stuff for humans it wont have Wi-Fi just extremely slow enter net that will take days or months to load.
misterOsc haha yes!
misterOsc if there is there will probably be lag of 14 mins
There are no people on Mars and you worried about the damn WeeFee? 💀💀💀
Running away from the problem is really gonna help. Blow heads on Mars are gonna die...
anybody else hyped for a new age?
yes right here man the true space age is about to kick off
I would love to be one of the earlier colonists on Mars. Why? Life is short, and I'd like to be able to contribute to the future of humanity, and be involved in something so crazy.
Orgoth Mcgee I am seeing this when it is 55 minutes old and has 55 likes! Lol
Let's do it
Yes and it'll be like "Prometheus" or mabey I'll be able to relate to MANY ANIMES!!!!
Seriously tho this guy is our generation's Tesla (pun intended but the point still stands)
elon's just a buisnessman, tesla was a pure scientist
Elon firsthand helped develop his own rockets. He's the real life Tony Stark.
According to Elon he spends 80% of his time on engineering and design of his cars and rockets. He sure is not your typical business man.
MCSGproject
he's just running the numbers to get to a price point, it's just the subject matter is fantastical
Ryukachoo You're delusional?
We're gonna make it really really fun.. like real fun.. There's gonna be a restaurant and stuff.
first building should be a rodeo bar
Riding a mechanical bull on mars would be awesome. Lower gravity means a pretty long throw when you get tossed off. Other awesome things for low g would be parqour, swimming and with a thick enough atmosphere skydiving without a parachute. (Probably underground as mars's low surface gravity means it will probably never hold an atmosphere as thick as ours.)
lol 😂
Last thing you need in mar is drink people
- Guy planning on bringing millions of years of evolution to another planet to do something bigger than anything thats been done before.
every NASA employee watched this speech with mouth agape, guaranteed
Well if you send Jared Leto to Mars... will it take him 30 seconds to get there? :3
wut
Best comment
+nia d Jared Leto is famous for being the front man of a band called 30 Seconds to Mars
He's not famous for that lol
Clorox Bleach i would say he is
Real life Mass Effect right here...
Red Faction?
*Musk Effect
haahahah!
Wish they find prothean ruins there
Star Citizen
200 years from now Mars will be Earth II.
James Leonard No it'll be mars lol
In that logic, as we colonize more and more planets we'll end up will Earth LXV in a couple thousand years.
Mars will just be Mars.... earth II ... hahaha that is so earthling thinking. think out of the universe(box). i just hope that Mars and Earth won't have any war
Mars will have no flatearthers, no religious people and no Donald Trump so it will take down earth in term of technology and advancement
Abdelhak Chaker you lost me at no
Any last words flat earthers ?
I beat Osu! They havr flat earthers all AROUND the globe!
I beat Osu! Will this be the birth of the flat mars society? And if it is will the 2 societies fight and call eachother fake?
We need a worldwide kickstarter to give this man all the money he needs to accomplish this!
C.T. Wellington everyone spend about 50M$
You did that to NASA and they stole ur money
Well they used it for
you know
space.
so not really stealing
since it was tax money
spent by representatives
on the things they said they were going to spend it on
Do you have the slightest idea at how many technologies developed for space travel are used in everyday life today?
No, tell me.
Dont you think it is very embarassing for NASA that Elon will probably have better ,cheaper technolgie than them :D?
He already has :D
NASA saved SpaceX so i would say they have earned some respect.
Many of the technologies used here were developed by NASA. NASA has many programs with a very small budget in contrast to private companies who can put much of their investments into a single project. I admire musk but if our government wanted us to go to mars and properly funded NASA we'd be there by 1999
Why is nobody ever talking about the Germans who actually provided the rocket concept? Compared to that, 80 years of progress made is quite small. Just because the Germans lost the war and the Americans stole the technology, doesnt mean people should go through life not realizing every and ALL space development is because of them.
well... spacex was and its funded partially by nasa so, not really "embarrassing"
The simulation forgot to factor in the craft blowing up on launch
that doesn't happen often enough to factor it in unfortunately.
If my RC car keeps crashing, and I know why, I fix it so it won't crash anymore. That's what they are doing.
is he Growing the Tony Stark Beard???!!! brilliant
$140k to go to mars with 100-200 people......... YES PLEASE
Lets hope it really is achievable in 40 years, or in our lifetimes!
4TheWinQuinn True!
I guess if the rockets hold or work even better than expected we might get there way cheaper. He said they will build not only a few of those, they will build as many as they can, thousands so to speak. Add competitors to the calculation and the price will drop even more. Work hard to have as many belongings to sell as possible and you might go in a decade.
Noé As long as there's wifi. I'm starting to save up now. Also saving up for some cool cyborg body parts
Mars One is going in the couple years with four people I think.
Elon ...you seriously trippin 😶
i know he is
or maybe you're just stupid..
nah, he's just running the numbers
although he mentions nothing about habitation, just getting there, although an 80 day round trip from earth to mars orbit and back as a sort of ultimate luxury cruise vacation would be massively successful i bet
Elon is the new jesus.
Elon Musk wants to build a rocket while Trump wants to build a wall, while Hilary just sends emails
Damn this really puts things in perspective...
haahhaah yaaas
Michael Josias so musk for president in guessing lol
Musk and Trump, both billionaires but one is not a cowardly insecure bigot. Something to think about this November.
lmao
This guy is like a modern-day Columbus minus the infamy
Andy Zhang but Christopher Columbus was stupid. He thought Earth was like 15x smaller than it actually is.
Harry Dowd how big do you think the earth is in numbers without looking it up?
Andy Zhang I don’t have a damn clue. I just know that Christopher Columbus #1 was looking for Asia not America #2 when he got there, he thought he was on Asia and #3 he thought Earth was a large percentage smaller than everyone else knew it was.
Andy Zhang Here is an article I think you might enjoy. www.google.com/amp/amp.history.com/news/christopher-columbus-never-set-out-to-prove-the-earth-was-round
Christopher Columbus wasn't stupid, the entire world population at the time was, he believed what he'd been taught through society at the time, just like we believe in things that have been told to us is scientific truth, but in the future will most likely be debunked and we'll be the ones that in the future they call idiots for believing in those theories, it's called evolution.
I love how he talks about this like we're almost able to get to Mars
I mean, we are constantly closer than we have ever been. and he wants to work on it.
Veto 8 years if technology keeps accelerating at the rate is is right now. If it increases (and it has been increasing for a LONG time now) it will be finished even sooner
We're actually closer to flying to the Mars than Americans to flying to the moon when Kennedy announced the new space program. It's just that manned spaceships are expensive AF and there's currently no nation interested in. Technically we could already have a man on the Mars when Hillary's/Trump's presidency ends.
Falcon 9 can actually get to Mars, just not a huge amount of mass can be transported. FH will be much better.
it feels a little bit early to talk the way he talks. I mean dont get me wrong i freaking love the guy , but just go on mars with a very small crew first before talking about shipping 100 people all together no ? :)
This feels too sci-fi and 100+ years. But looking at what Elon achieved so far and how ambitious he is to go to Mars, most of us might witness the begining of colonisation. HYPED
When he started up his Space X mission back in 2006 I thought he was insane but watching that conference I really believe he can do it. It's only been 10 years, the only thing that will stand in his way is funding
Atakan Polat he wants to launch the first Mars mission in 2022. Thats around the corner!
and ellaphants will join yoga clubs
at frisches
i just realized, if basically the whole world is able to go to mars and into space, no one will think that the world is flat! unless they think like 2 billion people are lying for no apparent reason.
the flat earthers will say that the windows are actually screens showing a video made by some art team :P
VSGU TheOPCrown I hate those flattards :/ their brains are flatter than they could imagine how flat the earth is
if they keep with that mindset, the future will hit them like a brick wall.
how bout we put them all in an individual rocket and let them break the glass then
see how they like it
King ppp an ice wall. lol
3:34
TOTAL COST PER ONE MARS TRIP / SHIP --> $43 (forgot add M)
but it looks good... space traveling
How much would you price the first light bulb or the first functional computer?
he said he wanted it to be 200,000$ for one person, and it's drastically changing lower from 43m over time. which he's hoping itll be 200,000 by 2020? I believe in him 100% though.
Alexander Chuguryan I
He have to cut his Mexican mustache
Forgot to add B*
That's simply one of the coolest things I've ever heard! Let's do it NOW👍😬
Last time I was this early we were on the FREAKIN MOOOON
Augure Zera
Augure Zera we were on the moon one time...
Alright first step for interstellar war
Technically this is only a first step in interplanetary war. We need to discover a planet with life and then go declare war on that. It might not be intelligent life we go to war with, but we have already declared war on Emus here. So I see no problem with declaring war on any kind of multicellular life.
what if people on mars decide to go to war against people on earth after becomming its own state?
Still interplanetary, not interstellar. Interstellar war requires we find life or colonize outside our solar system. Then we need to declare against that.
With who? We're colonising Mars lol, tho tbh ppl think there's microscopic life on mars so i guess we conquer them? (And then evolve them into intelligents over millenias)
Presentation was awesome, the QaA was kind of cringe, with plugs for websites and electric proyects. Thabks Elon!
This is the beginning of the future! Why wasn't this on the news tonight?
Because inteligent and racional people don't take him seriously.
Well, intelligent and rational people would at least use realize that he has done REALLY well. He has created Tesla, PayPal, SpaceX, OpenAI, and SolarCity. All of them have preformed extremely well, including SpaceX. While, yes I do think this is optimistic, he is not insane to think it'll be in the near future.
Filipe so yea he just sent his car into space after selling flamethrowers for his boring company
When the weed hits
never seen an Elon Musk spech right? He always sounds like an insecure schoolgirl talking to her crush
Something with certain brilliant intellectuals lacking social presentation skills something like that
couldn't said it better than this
Musk should be sent back to his south african ghetto that he crawled out of. Sends an unmanned rocket into space and some fools get taken in. The Russians are the only ones still sending manned missions into space. The Soyuz has been the only way to ISS since 2011. T
I WANT TO MOVE TO MARS
me too
When the AI is ready, we will start terraforming missions using robots to do most of the work and a few human personnel to supervise it. The experience from the terraforming missions will help us figure out how to send a bigger amount of humans. From there, colonization will grow rapidly and space exploration will grow exponentially. It might be very provable that we will figure out how to "condition" a planet to be inhabited before we actually find the perfect Earth clone.
By that time, we'll be so good at virtualizing our conscientiousness, that *we* will be there teraforming, in the robotic body. Then we'll slowly accept our new mechanical body, and abandon our meaty body. Then we'll stop caring about teraforming since mechanical body can survive in much more hostile environments. We'll just care about exploring, exploring uncharted corners of the galaxy, and when that gets boring, we'll just live in virtual worlds, with automated and endless backup system creating copies of our simulations throughout the galaxy so our virtual simulations will keep going on. In the simulation, we'll be living in 1999, watching The Matrix thinking what an amazing movie that is, dazzled at the possibility future holds, promise of interstellar travel and space colonization... and never know that WE'RE ALREADY IN A SIMULATION.
Okay, back to work...
AI is really close, mechanical body transplants are not.
Eduardo Hernandez Love the speculation. Except you have no idea if that is even possible. One step at a time. Lets see this so called mission to mars, if it will even happen within 50 years.
Peter Park But why would you want to create a simulation and not know that you are in it? That defeats the purpose of calling it a simulation if you have no way of knowing you are inside of one.
Gee, I don't know. What about just for the heck of it? Maybe they'd build one for fun, think it's so fun to muck around in it, then later as time passes, they lose interest and move on and die. Simulation may continue with all those simulated minds living in it, never knowing about their reality.
For all we know, statistically speaking (according to Elon Musk), we're already in a simulation.
Lmao in 10 years rich people can just say Fk this place I'm going to mars.
What is Mars One doing these days? Maybe the four Mars One colonists could hitch a ride with the two hundred SpaceX colonists.
I swear Elon Musk is my god.. and I know many agree.
I'd like to go. If someone can make that possible, hit me up.
You can! If you're a US resident.
***** I'm thinking mostly about the cost. Also, I'm not. I live in Europe.
LZ Same here, and the cost isn't that bad, well it won't be.
take a bit of acid, 15bucks. travel through space n time
I volunteer as well
Musk's greatest impact yet: Zero-G GAMES
I can't wait for Loren to get back and do like a 30minute video on the entire event.
She actually asked Musk a question live on stage. I gotta say I was pretty excited to see her.
+Sohaib Baig time stamp please, and link
spacex.com/mars
Thank you for this recap
Wish they find prothean ruins in mars when they go there
If you know what videogame this is please say the name of it
Sorry for the bad gramar
Mass Effect
too easy
This man is the planet's future.
Very nice compression of an hour - long video. Thanks.
Good hustle man!
2:41 That looks like the Soviet N1 rocket design
My 4 year old daughter's grandchildren might get to do this stuff. It sounds so cool. Could never forget the 360 degree picture from the Mars Rover few months back.
Yeah, but I doubt I will have $10 Billion for the trip. I would love to be proved wrong though. XD
He did say 200 grand for a ticket with cargo landing in 2022, humans in 2024. 10 billion is the "Old Space" price if you don't reuse everything. And 40 years is the estimate for a self sustaining civilization that couldn't survive if the population orb Earth was wiped out somehow.
What he does is pure genius. He is my idol.
If you ask me, Elon Musk isn't really an entrepreneur. He's a very good professor of applied economics.
He does have a major in both econs and physics.
He's a visionary.
He isn't really an entrepreneur? He is one of the most successful entrepreneurs lmao. People can be more than one thing.
Does anyone know what program does he uses for the presentation slides?
If trump elected as president , Im leaving Earth and moving to England.
What?
WTF your dad is Trump
Why can't Elon be president. Or Bill Gates or somebody good. not Clinton or Trump. We can do better than that.
If Hillary is elected I'll be living in a sharia country
clearly dont understand sarcasm
Dope video!🎉🤘🏼😇😎
Lets just hope Kit Harrington doesn't go because then he'll come back to kill us all
In 1 thousand years:
Jimmy: "Hey, remember when we all lived on one dumpy planet"
Bob: "Yeah, ancient times Jimmy, ancient times.."
I was expecting moon base first.
This guy should be president
MrMusic Crow president of mars
Thanks
0:09-0:19 when he said that I got chills
If everyone helped each other there wouldn't be need for money and this might happen a lot sooner 🙂
Too many people with low IQ for that to happen without eugenics.
Fifty bucks says you'll be eliminated if the standards for eugenics are high.
Charles Lin I don't need your money.
TheABD96 people don't work for free
Get ready, our species is going back home..!!!
but were already on earth
?
Do you truly not think we are from somewhere else originally..! why do Adam and Eve have navals.?
thumpin1 Adam and Eve are a fairy tale and if you actually believe that story than wow
It is a tale.Just without fairies edgy fedoralord .
Does anyone know where I can find high resolution renders of the MCT?
Will there be some kind of lucky draw for free trip? Scratch and win or something like that?
Very cool. But still i'm sceptic how will they arrive in good shape. They have to face havy Radioactive rays on their trip to Mars. And how will they create a Athmosphere on the Mars like shown in the Video ?
A terraforming of Mars is going to take hundreds of years, it's in the very long term.
NASA is already working on the first thing. The terraforming will last hundreds of years.
leo ulreich the trip would take about 3-6 months depending on how far you are from the planet at launch.
Humans have survived more than a year in the ISS with few problems, so it is safe to assume that although the amount of radiation would be much higher than on earth, your odds of suffering from it in the long term would only be a fraction higher than on Earth.
To put it into perspective, a human born in Alaska, making the one year trip to space, and heading back to live the rest of his life in Alaska (most of it indoors during winter), would receive the same amount of radiation in their lifetime as a human born in Florida, going out on a frequent basis both during winter and summer and occasionally tanning under the sun on a beach.
Now for those living on Mars, the odds of suffering from radiation would dramatically increase due to the lack of magnetosphere, hence the first colonies would likely have to settle underground until an artificial magnetic field can be set up
Leon Campa yep that sounds realistic.
By nuking the poles to release greenhouse gases from what I've discovered.
I'd go, seems fun and no Trump to kill us all.
Elon Musk: Get rek mars! we will colonizate you! haha!
Mars' magnetic field: Hold my beer
WOW
"if it doesn't sound absurd there's no hope for it"
~albert einstein, probably
Yeah but still who the hell wants to spend their life on Mars
Safi Rouhi We'll 'accidentally' leave you behind when we all go to mars.
Me. It is my dream.
You do!
Hopefully my X
This man is a visionary, entrepreneur, billionaire, philanthropist and a genius
Id be 100% down to go
Mars is already inhabited by an advanced civilization living there right now
havefunbehappy. We will keep them out by building a giant beautiful wall.
And have Mexico pay for it
3:15 How is it fun to lose your muscle mass and bone density?
There is a restaurant. End of story
4TheWinQuinn So you gain fat from the restaurant and lose muscle and bone mass from the 0-G? End of story indeed, nobody survives that without constant exercise (and he didn't talk about that).
he didnt talk about a lot of things. thats because he focuses on how to get there, there are plenty of groups that will figure out how to stay there.
people have been in space for over a year and a half without dying
Where Do I Sign Up !!!
Do you take IOU's?
Great stuff
VERY WELL DONE. 👍
Link to full lecture?
We need to thank our lucky stars we have people like Elon Musk. People like him will ensure humanity's future and progress in science.
How can we terraform mars if it has no magnetic field?
I love how Elon Musk is NOT a marketing guy
62.5% less gravity on mars. Does that mean we could eventually run on Mars surface(with a suit) and jump like 50 feet into the "air"? I can just imagine how cool that would be
Imagine the damage that this will cause to your blood vessels and bones and muscles . Am sure you’ll end up with multiple aneurysms
ITs ounds like he gave this speech literally an hour after he wrote it, and outsourced the visuals.
show!!!!
This is awesome I definite by want to go
Is tesla manufacturing the mars mobile?
youtube’s billing so odd so many ,every times we enjoy it.Mr elon i guess you already decide use rocket to be space station .congratulations.
Wow!❤❤❤
"You could lose engines and still make the trip safely"... That is probably the coolest thing I have heard all month.
While listening to it live, I heard someone from The Verge ask a question!
elon musks mind is amazing...but SHAVE THAT STASH MATE😂
But what will they do once there ?
You go bruh...
The idea of going to Mars is like being near fire. It feels warm to be around it, but u just can't touch it!
If it was anyone else I would have huge doubts... but he could make it happen. It's very exciting!
WHERE DO I WATCH
Pretty mindblowing concept! It´s amazing to see one Musk vision after another come to life.
called brainless storming.
How will we get water there though?
I think we need to discover a new form of thrust. Perhaps some form similar to ion propulsion but with the stability in power and abundance of energy source for some type of hydrogen fusion drive engine.
0:29 "We just need to change that bottom row" and the temperature, atmosphere and magnetosphere if we want more than a few dozen people living there.
One question how do you come back from mars
DO ITb
How could anyone not like Elon Musk?
