WHAT FORD DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW! ABS MODULE PROGRAMMING

  • In today's video we get called out to program a new ABS module in a 2009 Ford F150 V8 4.6 4x4 pickup truck. Luckily we can do this procedure without using a J2534 pass thru device or an expensive laptop. By using a relatively unknown function available in most professional level scan tools called PMI or Programmable Module Installation.

Had similar issue Ford wanted $1400.00 for parts and labor to replace the ABS module, sent it off myself to a company and for $145.00 they rebuilt it no programming needed. Works great.

MFckrs at an authorized Ford dealer service center recently quoted me upwards of $2,500 to replace the ABS for a 2012 Escape - the vehicle itself only cost me $4,500 and there's nothing wrong with it besides the ABS intermittently throwing B1342-20 for ECU internal fault. They didn't even bother putting the vehicle on a lift, had me waiting almost 2 hours despite me being early for the appoinment then billed me $215 for the diagnostic that actually took them less than 10 minutes while they were working on other vehicles ahead of mine. I could've used that money to buy a used module instead. Thanks for putting this information out there - you're a HERO.

@@brjones27 update: oh, and turns out I didn't even need to replace ABS module at all. After I recently changed all tires on the vehicle to the same brand/thread the vehicle hasn't thrown an ABS warning code since. Apparently mismatched tires will cause ABS errors but of course Ford tech didn't bother to tell me that or they just didn't know...? Anyhow it's obvious they don't want people fixing older cars so they're forced to buy the new shit. Also related had a hot argument with someone who works at DOT stating it's illegal to do your own aftermarket LED headlamp upgrades (such as on a 2012 Escape) for older vehicles yet it's perfectly fine that every other new car has them now, etc. It's obvious the existing laws were lobbied in favor of the manufacturers.

There were many times I tried to do that PMI test, but I would get a message indicating that couldn't be done. Ford does have an "As Built Data" function that worked with the IDS all the time. PCM, BCM, ABS, SRS, it didn't matter, they all worked. The early program had you look up data and manually input the info. Later updated program did all the work. Mostly I used it for ABS and PCM. You could also check for updates if they were there. I did a lot of ABS modules with "As Built Data." Good update and thanks for showing how it's done.

Just a note when doing this on an abs module you must have the steering wheel centered with the wheels straight ahead as the steering angle sensor is "zeroed" when the module is programmed so if the wheels aren't straight the zero point of the steering angle sensor will be incorrect and there is no function that I could find at least on my scanner to re-zero the steering angle sensor.
I found this out the hard way on the first one I did, luckily I could go back and do the PMI function again and correct it.

I had an issue on my ABS module and replaced it with a used one. I used Forscan tool which is very cheap and the software is free (extended Lisence free for 2 months but renewable) . I had the Vin mismatch error U2023 and C1525 and C1524. Forscan (free version) could deal with all of them. The As-Built data is verrrrry easy, one simple click to download all parameters. But The ONLY way to clear the C1525 was using a pressure pump- 2.5 bars(37 psi) and use the Pressure bleed option available on Forscan

I've done this with varying success. Seems to be hit and miss. Of course I'm using used modules. Possible my procedure is lacking. I will be more careful next time! Anyway using the "as built procedure has always worked in the end.

Most of the time abs lights are do to bad or dirty speed sensors hook up a abs reader first and if both the brake light and abs could be a simple low fluid or air in the lines

My local mechanic extracted the files from the old ABS module installed a new module and when he tried to download the files it says the file is corrupt. He then tried to manually load a file and it wouldn't work either. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.. Oh yeah we are working on a 2010 Expedition 2wd 5.4 liter. Please help.
