- I’m utterly in love with this rose, in fact it’s breathtakingly beautiful in all its stages
This is “Mill on the floss” from @david_austin_roses
it’s a huge informal shrub needing a help to stand but I just adore everything about it,
Reaching in my opinion around 5.5/6 feet the blooms are not only stunning, deeply cupped, full of fragrance but also produced in abundance-a real must have if you can give it the space

I just got the last one at my local garden nursery! Love this rose, it looks so much I was thrilled to find one plant in amongst 100"s of them. You should have seen me, I was moving through them all, spent about an hour looking at each tag and then 'bingo"
I have it planted back in 2019 when I bought my first house. It is tall and full of scent and FULL OF BLOOMS though out the summer all the way to the end of the summer. It is a stunner.
Absolutely gorgeous You had me at the first bloom! This one's at the top of my list.
Just ordered one for next spring. I am not sure where I'm going to put it. I have a walkway I want line with roses, but I think they are getting to much afternoon sun there. My Benjamin Britten is growing well but has these horrible, inch wide dried up looking blooms. I think it has to be the heat and sun. It's so hard, because there are so many beautiful roses and so few perfect places for them. I think I will have to put in some trellising on the west side of my walk and plant it with some kind of sunloving plants to create some shade in the heat of the summer. On the plus side, with 2 percent humidity all summer, I don't get much black spot.
On my list for spring 2023 :) Thanks for the review!!
Wow... this is gorgeous.😍
Hmmm where can I find some space.
Love that you are sharing your knowledge and insights with each rose.
Helps to make choices.
Just amazing.🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much.🙏
It’s my pleasure
After watching your video, I ordered this rose from DA and received it a few days ago. Your description fits with just what I was looking for. The size of bush is perfect for a particular space in my garden and the colour and shape look absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait for mine to establish! Thank you Ben, for this review! ❤️
I’m glad that you found what you were looking for. Hopefully you followed the link in my bio traffic entering the david Austin website using this link is a credited and traced back to me. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Okay, Ben, I’ll have to add this one to my ever growing list. 😊👍🏽
You've convinced me (again) Ben. I've just ordered this. You are always spot on. Thank you
Glad to hear it, I really hope you love it as much as I do, it’s especially stunning now late in the season

It’s a good problem though
Absolutely Beautiful Roses, indeed...!!! Gorgeous...😍✨❤🙏💕
It’s captivating
@@the_gardenerben 🙏💕 👍💯👌
I wanted this rose back when it was released in the US I think it was 2020. Its a climber for alot of people here. I finally got it. I absolutely fell in love with it when I first saw it and really happy with it so far.
Good to hear that it’s as huge as i think it is 💚
你很真誠!說的很棒!我昨晚也有買一盆,期待我也能種的很美好!
Wow..😍oh Ben i can't get over how big the Blooms in your Bush are...in the advertisement they seem so much smaller...i was thinking about her but gave the last Space in a half shaded Pott to Rosemore....🤷🏼♂️🙌👍
It’s a big bold stunner
You have definitely convinced me to take my car and run to the gardencenter where I saw a The Mill on the Flos. Thank you! Silas Marner and Gabriel Oak are already planted in my garden. 🙂
Of course it’s entirely up to you where you purchase from but purchasing directly wherever possible from David Austin Roses will alleviate an awful lot of the stress the plant will go through. I’m not saying this is true of your garden centre but often they are kept far too close together and not watered well enough causing black spot mould and mildew issues wherever you choose to purchase from your new rose when you get it
Thank you! I will follow your advice. I have already contacted DA for a stunning Penelope Lively, after seeing your video on this one.
@@alexandremachado3606 you know you can order directly through David Austin with the link in my bio ?
I really wanted this one when I first saw it. Now I’m actually glad I never got around to buying it; it’s absolutely beautiful & enchanting, but I don’t really have the space for it………
unless? 👀 💸
🤣🤣🤣
😳❤
I am waiting for mine to bloom. I hope I have the right rose, it is very thorny and small. The label attacked says it is Mill on the Floss.
😃🤩💚👍
Would this cope with a pot 2ft by 4ft do you think?
I've got a 4 year old Mill on the Floss which I bought as a bush rose, but it's become very evident that it's a lot bigger than advertised on the initial label! I called David Austin last year about it and they said it's probably going to be advertised as a climber and bush rose. Needless to say it's rather large at my front door and I'd love some guidance on how to get the best of it by allowing it to climb and be bushy at the bottom. Last year its longest shoots were almost up to the first floor window. I'd love to train it over/around my front door porch but I don't think I'm doing it justice. It's a beautiful rose, but I'm struggling to get into my front door now it's growing again (I cut it back a lot in its last prune!).
Thanks for any advice on tending to it at this point in the season :)
Good morning and thank you for your comment. I had a funny feeling they might reclassify this one as through my growing experience. It does reach seven or 8 feet even when pruned to the floor each year this year for the first time I didn’t prove mine back hard I chose to spiral it round a handmade wigwamresponded really well to this with any climbing rose. Do you want to try and get the canes into a horizontal position? This will generate many more flower spikes
Good morning, thanks for the reply. Yes, it's become a bit of a beast on my doorstep despite hard pruning (Think Audrey 2!) 😂
To be truthful, at this rate, I think it's probably too big for the space it's got but I want to try as it's so beautiful and clearly happy! I have one hoop attached to the wall at about 4ft but it's so much bigger than that even now! It mostly grows upwards and last year it made it most of the way around my entry porch. Is there harm in cutting any of it back now, to make it more manageable?
czcams.com/users/shortsMvoe171OK4A?si=se-nAO1v6XF0uM_B this might give you an idea - and it's only May! 😂
I had a chance to get this one last year in a local nursery and I did not, and I have been kicking myself ever since!
Let’s hope you see it again somewhere soon ! 💚
I'm Very tempted Ben, it looks fantastic . I have a new open flower bed approx 2m x1m. I'm wondering how many of these to plant in that space. How many would you plant. I'm Like you, I do like things a bit squashed in haha
Honestly if you’re planting Mill on the floss I wouldn’t part more than one Squash and a squeeze him I get away with planting to one at each end but this is a big shrub
@@the_gardenerben that saves me money then.. 1 it is 😜 thanks ben
I missed my opportunity here in the states to get mine-DA is sold out already. I have poets wife and love her form as you described. I had a perfect spot for MIll on the Floss and would like to get something similar. What would you recommend that would be the same size and have the same form?
That’s a tough one it’s a really large shrub ! I’m not aware of anything like it
Thank you so much for your review! How do you find this rose is with balling? I'm trying to create an informal cottage garden up north where it is rather rainy!! ☺️
It’s deeply cupped do it dose water log and ball but it doesn’t rain much hear
so beautiful! Wondering if Mill on the Floss is available on it's own roots or is grafted.
Hear in the U.K. I believe this is also grafted
Mine doesn’t have a fragrance, I planted it this spring. I guess the full characteristics of this beauty including the pleasant scent will present when the plant grows mature?
Give it time. :)
What do you know about the Charles Rennie Mackintosh rose?
Hello Ben, I just ordered David Austins Mil on the Floss Rose. I will receive it in early Spring. . I am trying to find a spot in the garden. I had a question, does this have to be several feet from the house since its going to be around 5 ft. wide.? I was wanting to plant it closer to the house like a climbing rose. I want to see it through the window.
I think you could quite successfully fan train it as a climber yes but it must be at least 2 feet from the wall
@@the_gardenerben Thank you so much for the reply. I love your videos, thank you for the all the advice.
She's lovely, can you tell me approximately how large the blossoms are?
Oh Mill on the floss they vary quite largely at the beginning of the season though tend to be around 2 1/2 inches across now at the back end of the season they may be a small as 1 1/2 inches across
Thanks for sharing...can it withstand the rain?
It can yes
I have seen others that have this rose get over 2 meters. I have this on my spring order. Would you say this would be appropriate for an obelisk?
Thank you for your comment as I say in my video. This one very comfortably reaches 6 to 8 feet in my growing experience. It will need some support. So yes an obelisk or a post would be ideal. I believe it would also fan train onto a wall quite well as well.
It does like the heat, so make sure you pop it in a sunny spot where it’s going to receive plenty of sun
Hi Ben can you make a video on how to tell whether your rose is a shrub or a climbing rose please? Thanks Ben, is this new rose a climber?
This rose is a shrub but I believe it could be trained on a wall in a fan shape due to its size The only Real way of telling is by growth habit
@@the_gardenerben my cabbage rose that I wanted to burn grew very long stalks/stems every summer then flop until the flowers touch the grass I have to tie them to keep them off the grass. Does that mean it’s a climbing rose? The pink rose next to it is not like that. By the way I hate my cabbage rose less because not only it smells nice but the petals actually taste fruity and fragrant, nice to eat. 😊
No it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a climber some like this rows are just floppy I need support
@@the_gardenerben so how do you know whether it’s a climber or a shrub? You said by growth habit, it doesn’t mean anything to me, unless it’s the habit of a person. I’ve tried to Google it but all I could find was the difference between a climber and a rambler.
Is "mill on the floss" heat tolerant up to 100F+ ? Thanks.
Hi and thank you for your question, have you watched my video uploaded this weekend on the 12 most drought tolerant David Austin roses that I grow? Mill on the floss makes it on to that list, but I can’t comment on whether it will take temperatures up to what you’re asking that’s 38°C and luckily here in the UK we haven’t experienced anything quite that hot just yet however I can confirm it has still up to this year‘s blistering heat and lack of water very well the bloom size has suffered but that is the case across-the-board not just with this rose
Up
How is her black spot resistance? 😯
It’s very good no problems So far whatsoever on the plant I have at home or on the ones I grow for my clients
