  • I’m utterly in love with this rose, in fact it’s breathtakingly beautiful in all its stages
This is “Mill on the floss” from ‪@david_austin_roses‬
it’s a huge informal shrub needing a help to stand but I just adore everything about it,
Reaching in my opinion around 5.5/6 feet the blooms are not only stunning, deeply cupped, full of fragrance but also produced in abundance-a real must have if you can give it the space

I just got the last one at my local garden nursery! Love this rose, it looks so much I was thrilled to find one plant in amongst 100"s of them. You should have seen me, I was moving through them all, spent about an hour looking at each tag and then 'bingo"

I have it planted back in 2019 when I bought my first house. It is tall and full of scent and FULL OF BLOOMS though out the summer all the way to the end of the summer. It is a stunner.

Just ordered one for next spring. I am not sure where I'm going to put it. I have a walkway I want line with roses, but I think they are getting to much afternoon sun there. My Benjamin Britten is growing well but has these horrible, inch wide dried up looking blooms. I think it has to be the heat and sun. It's so hard, because there are so many beautiful roses and so few perfect places for them. I think I will have to put in some trellising on the west side of my walk and plant it with some kind of sunloving plants to create some shade in the heat of the summer. On the plus side, with 2 percent humidity all summer, I don't get much black spot.

After watching your video, I ordered this rose from DA and received it a few days ago. Your description fits with just what I was looking for. The size of bush is perfect for a particular space in my garden and the colour and shape look absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait for mine to establish! Thank you Ben, for this review! ❤️

Of course it’s entirely up to you where you purchase from but purchasing directly wherever possible from David Austin Roses will alleviate an awful lot of the stress the plant will go through. I’m not saying this is true of your garden centre but often they are kept far too close together and not watered well enough causing black spot mould and mildew issues wherever you choose to purchase from your new rose when you get it

I've got a 4 year old Mill on the Floss which I bought as a bush rose, but it's become very evident that it's a lot bigger than advertised on the initial label! I called David Austin last year about it and they said it's probably going to be advertised as a climber and bush rose. Needless to say it's rather large at my front door and I'd love some guidance on how to get the best of it by allowing it to climb and be bushy at the bottom. Last year its longest shoots were almost up to the first floor window. I'd love to train it over/around my front door porch but I don't think I'm doing it justice. It's a beautiful rose, but I'm struggling to get into my front door now it's growing again (I cut it back a lot in its last prune!).
Thanks for any advice on tending to it at this point in the season :)

Good morning and thank you for your comment. I had a funny feeling they might reclassify this one as through my growing experience. It does reach seven or 8 feet even when pruned to the floor each year this year for the first time I didn’t prove mine back hard I chose to spiral it round a handmade wigwamresponded really well to this with any climbing rose. Do you want to try and get the canes into a horizontal position? This will generate many more flower spikes

    • @kirstywood8488
      @kirstywood8488 Před měsícem

Good morning, thanks for the reply. Yes, it's become a bit of a beast on my doorstep despite hard pruning (Think Audrey 2!) 😂
To be truthful, at this rate, I think it's probably too big for the space it's got but I want to try as it's so beautiful and clearly happy! I have one hoop attached to the wall at about 4ft but it's so much bigger than that even now! It mostly grows upwards and last year it made it most of the way around my entry porch. Is there harm in cutting any of it back now, to make it more manageable?

Hello Ben, I just ordered David Austins Mil on the Floss Rose. I will receive it in early Spring. . I am trying to find a spot in the garden. I had a question, does this have to be several feet from the house since its going to be around 5 ft. wide.? I was wanting to plant it closer to the house like a climbing rose. I want to see it through the window.

Thank you for your comment as I say in my video. This one very comfortably reaches 6 to 8 feet in my growing experience. It will need some support. So yes an obelisk or a post would be ideal. I believe it would also fan train onto a wall quite well as well.

    • @the_gardenerben

@@the_gardenerben my cabbage rose that I wanted to burn grew very long stalks/stems every summer then flop until the flowers touch the grass I have to tie them to keep them off the grass. Does that mean it’s a climbing rose? The pink rose next to it is not like that. By the way I hate my cabbage rose less because not only it smells nice but the petals actually taste fruity and fragrant, nice to eat. 😊

Hi and thank you for your question, have you watched my video uploaded this weekend on the 12 most drought tolerant David Austin roses that I grow? Mill on the floss makes it on to that list, but I can’t comment on whether it will take temperatures up to what you’re asking that’s 38°C and luckily here in the UK we haven’t experienced anything quite that hot just yet however I can confirm it has still up to this year‘s blistering heat and lack of water very well the bloom size has suffered but that is the case across-the-board not just with this rose
