Active vs Capacitive Styluses for Drawing

  • The perfect stylus for your tablet really depends on what you're using. Capacitive styluses generally work the same across different tablets or touchscreen devices. Digital styluses usually support only the OS and products they are made for.

  • @T1k3mys0n
    @T1k3mys0n Před 5 lety +4

    To my understanding
    - Active Stylus will have a cursor when in close proximity to supported screen. Like that 3:05
    - Capacitive Stylus is rubber tipped but there is also capacitive stylus with pointy ballpoint like tip and usually has disc, like in 5:41
    - Now this 3rd type is what confused me , an ACTIVE CAPACITIVE STYLUS, it has rechargeable battery too. Is it more sensitive and easier to register on the screen ? or what ? I don't understand this one, I found quite a lot of this in online stores and it's quite expensive.
    I am currently using capacitive stylus with pointy tip with disc like in 5:41 for playing Nintendo DS emulator (Drastic), but it's not very sensitive sometimes it doesn't register the tap, but it is not that bad I can even use it for playing Trauma Center, the surgeon game on DS and do surgery using this stylus, it's just sometimes it won't register so I can't aim for better rank when racing against time doing the surgery. I hope it's usable for later chapter with harder and time critical missions
    Funny thing when I was playing the real DS back in the days, I often used my finger nail to tap, but now that I use emulator+android where finger is the main supported touch input , I miss the use of stylus. Using stylus is much more accurate than finger. and it can pinpoint tap to a very small area on the screen like maybe 3mm x 3mm maybe even less. Both stylus and finger supported should be made more common and cheap, it's the best of both world.

    • @SimonBauer7
      @SimonBauer7 Před 2 lety +1

      i may be a little late but the 3rd type of capacitive stylus the one with the battery uses the battery power to generate an electric field in the tip to fool the device into thinking a finger is on the screen which allows it to have a fine tip and no disk

    Hey Teoh. I have a chuwi hi12 dualboot with its designated stylus the hipen H1 - an active and pressure sensitive pen working with the tablet digitizer. very bad performances. noisy tip, vibrations when trying to draw straight lines, resting the palm on the screen makes sudden line strokes and more... any idea what pen might work with the chuwi digitizer??

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 7 lety +1

      +Yakir Ben ari Usually such digitizer tablets are compatible with their own brand styluses. So for accuracy, it would be the Adonit Jot Pro or rubber tip styluses.

    So I got an iPhone 6, I used to have a note 4. And what I love the most was the S pen. Anyways, I was looking for a stylus for my iPhone that I can draw with and doesn't feel too big for the screen. I like the Adonit Pro 3 but I think its gonna be too big for the iphone 6's screen. So, What do you recommend?

      If you only want to write using MS Word, you can do with the Adonit Jot Pro, Wacom Bamboo or..... the HP Active Pen or Microsoft Surface pen. If you want to draw or paint too, the active range of pens are recommended. I just ordered the MS Surface Pen.....

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 7 lety +2

      +Bob Whiteside Touch screen laptops (not those foldable 2-in-1) may not work well with stylus. There might be broken lines when drawing with stylus. That's because they are design for touch and tap. I've used a stylus on XPS and had that broken line issue.

      Jagged lines will depend a lot on the stylus used. E.g. Apple Pencil does not produce jagged lines.

    I'm looking for a Stylus that I'm afraid doesn't exist... I aim to use my laptop's touchpad (which is reasonably good) as a rudimentary graphics tablet (of course, not for professional drawing, just for adding handwritten notes on PDF files, to highlight important parts, draw little diagrams, etc, when I study). I have thought to acquire a capacitive active stylus so that my precision is higher. However, when I want to write or draw instead of only moving the cursor, I have to tap twice on the trackpad to click, which is annoying... Is there maybe a stylus with a button you can press as the left-click of the mouse? Or maybe another solution...?

    • @teohyc

    Just a tip for the people who do not know this solution: If you don't have a palm rejection option or the one on your device is shit, just make shure your palm does not touch the screen by placing something between it, like a cloth. I always pull the sleeve of my shirt over my palm, works everytime on my acer switch.

    Thanks for the orientation: i'm going to get a capacitive stylus as a gift for my dad, who use an iPad (i think ipad 2, or not a recent model as well), so he will use it for handwriting and not for drawing. What stylus do you suggest to buy? I've seen the adonit jot pro, or the adonit dash 3, but i'm a little bit confused if the parallax problem of the dash 3 would be a real problem in terms of accuracy. Can you help me please??
    Thank you!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 6 lety

      There's going to be parallax or offset if you use those battery powered stylus. Jot Pro (disc tip) is most accurate. I prefer that because I prefer accuracy.

    Hey Teoh, love your videos! Just wondering what pressure-sensitive capacitive stylus you used in this video at about 13:00? I've been looking for one that will work on Android, however all the stylii I've seen are Ipad only. I read that some capacitive stylus use Blutooth to communicate the pressure...

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 7 lety +4

      That's the Samsung TabPro stylus. Some capacitive styluses do use Bluetooth to communicate pressure because the screen has no digitizer to detect pressure.

      Thanks for your reply! :) Was half hoping there was finally an android stylus for non-digitizer tablets, like on the old ipads via bluetooth. I guess I'll just have to get another tablet afterall. Looking forward to more of your product views!
