The editing in that film (like all of Kon’s works) is phenomenal. The way the interview is strung through the filmography and life of Chiyoko is fucking breathtaking.
I will need to see the rest of his works like Paranoia Agent and Tokyo Godfathers. PA was available in my country at a Japanese cable channel but no subtitles.
Satoshi Kon really was a visionary with this and Perfect Blue. We need some positivity mixed in with all of the hate mongering on CZcams so thank you for doing this Chris.
@@Earl_Bassett_ Well some people like Nerdrotic, Synthetic Man and Heel Vs Babyface don't do a lot to help with their inflammatory style of commentary.
"Starring Akio Otsuka" Akio Otsuka also voices Blackbeard from One Piece, Wamuu from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Thorkell from Vinland Saga, Yuijiro Hanma from Baki the Grappler and Curtis from Porco Rosso
On top of being a fantastic film. It actually has a special place in my heart. I remember my mother buying this movie for me and it was the only anime my mother watched with me before she passed away. She thought it was beautiful.
I'm fascinated by surreal, dream like films, and Paprika does a better job depicting a dream like experience than any other film! The animation is incredible, I love the story and the characters... it's truly a masterpiece! ❤
Hi Chris, I'm so glad you brought up the similarities between Kon's work & that of Requiem, Black Swan & most importantly Inception. Absolutely agree that it's impossible not to address at least it's a bit inspired by Paprika. My personal fave has always been Millennium Actress though, lost count to how many times I've rewatched it & how much tears I've cried during all those rewatch sessions.. 🥲🥲
Love how the two barmen in this movie are actually the director of the movie and the author of the novel being adapted, and that they directly impact the plot. And echo the sentiments for a feature presentation on Millennium Actress, such a beautiful and inventive movie itself, and also my favorite animated movie.
I was lucky to watch it in theaters last year when they did a complete screening of all of Satoshi Kon's works. And usually, theaters here do his Tokyo Godfathers as a Christmas movie theater special. Anything Kon did is just amazing. Love his work, great feature presentation Chris. Love the insight how pivotal anime has been to entertainment in the West.
no way, I watched paprika a few days ago. Really incredible and creative movie. Love these feature presentations, glad you chose to cover this one! Cant wait to check out more of satoshi kons work.
It sucks Satoshi Kon passed away so young and this was his final completed film, but the final scene is unintentionally a nice little tribute/capper to his career
the movie name itself, Paprika, brings out such immense joy from the very core of my soul. I absolutely love this movie and how the voyage it embarks on is infinite, like dreams.
Guts’ Theme is literally how I got into Berserk lol. Susumu Hirasawa is an inspired musician. Highly recommend checking out his film-unaffiliated music too, there’s a wealth of just transcendent pieces.
Thank you for making a video on this truly phenomenal film! Satoshi Kon was taken from this world far far too soon. He had so much more to offer. His films also have some of the best animation and one of my favourite art styles ever!
To this day, I am still in awe of Satoshi Kon works whether his films or series or manga. They are crazy good, inventive, bold and original. You instantly recognize his style. Even though I prefer Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress over Paprika, I think Paprika is Satoshi Kon at his full blown pure imagination. That opening scene including the credits still amaze me to this day.
Chris, you starting this segment is such a great choice cos you get to talk about movies you love and share them with us. I have watched every episode and love all of them but today I think you have elevated this segment cos not only that you get to share you favourite movies with us but it has become a place for you to express yourself and your feelings and as you said it helped. We’re all glad it did. Thank you for sharing and bringing these movies to us and your thoughts on them. Can’t wait for the next one.
I really need to give Paprika another shot...don't think I was fully awake the first time I watched it. I just appreciate the artistry Satoshi Kon shared with the world more and more every year, and I too am haunted by his passing
This is the some of the best content on CZcams. You've got me spending money on physical media again. Can't say that about traditional media and network TV.
I admittedly knew nothing about Satoshi Kon prior to watching this video. I saw some Clips from Paprika and decided to give it a watch and boy was it a treat. Oddly enough a quarter of the way into the movie I had the thought “This reminds me of that old show Paranoia Agent I watched when I was in high school” without knowing who made it and the backstory of their other works. I’m saddened that I have learned about Satoshi Kon posthumously but I’m excited to dive more into his works. Thanks for this very insightful vid 🙏
Amen, Chris. Loved this. Satoshi Kon was so far ahead of his time, and his contemporaries, that one might be forgiven if they thought he was from an alternate universe. His level of imagination and creativity was literally *that* otherworldly.
My favorite Kon work will always be Paranoia Agent. This show just tackles so much and makes his brilliant films feel rather small thematically. But Paprika and Perfect Blue are close second. He passed WAY too early.
This is my favourite animated movie. There are other more visually stunning and other with deeper plots. But none of them combine them both in this amazing way.
I watched Paprika in 2016 or 2017 and boy, I thought that shit was a movie of that year. It is gorgeous, it is fun, it is trippy. I have to rewatch this.
I'm glad you brought up how excellent the opening credits are. I've only seen this movie once but have seen the first 10 minutes or so 5 or 6 times. Just pure genius and creativity on display
I remembered watching Paprika when it came out, It blew my mind and it was my introduction to Satochi Khon movies. And three years ago I had the opportunity to watch Perfect Blue at the cinema, it was a completely different experience than watching it at home, probably more disturbing.
Paprika is one of the most perfect date movies imho. It straddles the balance between femininity and masculinity SO well that it appeals to both genders perfectly!
Totally review Paranoia Agent!! I remember coming across that show on Adult Swim and boy did it stick with me. I am so glad it got another release here in the US after being unavailable for a good while. Paprika is awesome and awesomely wild too.
So the detective gets over his fear of movies, which were brought on by his colleague dying mid production, by purchasing a ticket to Satoshi’s next movie, which remains unfinished as he died mid production. Damn
Hi Chris! I discovered Satoshi Kon when I was very young, watching "Perfect Blue". Of course, I didn't new anything about the guy at the moment. It was just absolutely mindblowing for me and the movie haunted me (in a good way) for years. I remember I thought "This is really something. This is good.", even when I was not aware (at the moment) about things such as storytelling, script, editing, animation, tension... Then I watched "Magnetic Rose" and started digging about who wrote that. What a masterpiece. Of course, Paprika is another wonder of this great artist. It's true. We never will get more of Satishi Kon, but I'm sure other authors will come to blow our minds in the future. Cool video!
About the dream to filmmaking metaphor in Paprika: that's also a popular interpretation of Inception, that every character resembles a role in filmmaking
Hey man, people have been talking a lot of shit, about how you are not an honest film critic anymore. But f*ck them I love what you're doing. I love that you are evolving as a filmmaker. And these feature presentations are really fun.
This was such a timely video because I just watched this movie last week for the first time. I really dug it then, and watching this video made me appreciate it more!
I feel the exact same way about Satoshi Kon. All his works are masterpieces, and I occasionally get upset that he died so young & wonder what other amazing things he could have created.
Paprika is a phenomenal anime movies ever made, and it's made one of the greatest minds. The fact that this movie alone inspired Christopher Nolan to make Inception.
I love paprika. I remember seeing the scene where they jump over a fence only to discover it’s the balcony of a building on the ceiling TVs at a video rental store. I rented it and it became a favorite. When I first saw Inception I thought back to Paprika and it was part what I loved about the movie. It’s so, so good!
You're 100% correct about anime not getting the credit it deserves, for years it seems like it was dismissed as 'cartoons'. Dismissing something as 'cartoons' not only highlights the contempt which cartoons are treated with (some of the most well known characters are from cartoons, even if some of them were only vehilces to sell toys) but also fails to acknowledge that animation isn't just for children. It very much reminds me of the early days of Manga Video in the UK where the idea of animated films or series aimed at older people seemed to break people's brains.
There should be more movies that accurately portay dreams, especially made by lucid dreamers. Hollywood often portays dreams inaccurately. I think there should be a whole genre of movies dedicated to accurately portaying the look and feel of dreams honestly. As a lucid dreamer I feel like you'd get some of the most beautiful movies both visually and story wise this way as well. Some dreams tell better stories than any movie or book
I saw this movie in theaters too. I was blown away by it. I knew next to nothing about it and I'm glad about that. I need to see it again because I know I missed a lot of stuff in it.
Tokyo Godfathers is legit one of the best Christmas movies ever made, and hideously underappreciated as such.
It's oddly whimsical.
Agreed
It's one of my go-to's every Christmas.
The soundtrack for Paprika is what makes me rewatch it every now and then

The only thing worse than “hate” (aka objective, normal criticism) is fake praise. At least with “hate” there’s honesty
@@Earl_Bassett_ There's a difference between objective criticism and just blatant prejudice though.
@@claytonrios1 Well, obviously. The sad reality is that most people now and these days automatically see objective criticism as someone being hateful
