- Today's video is a visit to The Secret Garden of Louth, a beautiful and completely hidden away Lincolnshire garden created and lovingly developed by Jennifer & Rodger Graham from a blank canvas over 30 years featuring countless rare exotic plants, towering hardy Trachycarpus palms and bamboo, stunning spring flowers and beautiful planting combinations. This video is the start of a three part series following the development and evolution of this stunning garden through the year and will feature a summer visit looking at the new tropical planting and bedding next, just before they open to the public to raise money for the Salvation Army through the NGS in August, and an autumn episode to really show off the crescendo of their incredible UK tropical style summer display as the plants reach colossal heights. From border inspiration, practical spring plant care tips, raised bed ideas, propagation advice through to incredibly rare exotic plants like Brassaiopsis and Kalopanax jostling with Tulips, Hellebores and Epimediums, there really is something in this garden and video for all garden and gardening lovers.
For me, seeing the huge amount of efforts that go on behind the scenes, literally THOUSANDS of plants and full rooms in the house dedicated to overwintering plants and propagation really is eye opening and outdoors there's certainly a few beautiful ground covers and easy shade foliage plant ideas I'll be adding to my list! The garden transformation throughout the year really will be incredible, the summer planting stunning and it all begins here with this April tour on a beautiful, sunny spring day. Living in London makes us so jealous seeing these amazing country gardens.
This one really is stunning isn’t it! Yes, it’s definitely a benefit to living in more rural areas but Jenny and Rodger are quite central in Louth so lucky to have such a large space. In London you’d certainly need to have serious money I imagine!

Haha yes, I'm with you there - so many incredible plants and a real eye for combining them in a genuinely beautiful way too. Yeah, I get that but you've done impressive things with your space and grow some fantastic palms etc. With every size and type of garden come opportunities and challenges, hopefully this is an eye opener for others who might see pictures of the end result but not realise how much goes into creating such a high level of planting across a large space!

It really is, they put so much effort in to it and really have talent, kindness and dedication in bucketloads don't they! I'm looking forward to going back again!
As usual, you've included some of that lovely... I'll call it waltzing photography... you know, the slow motion bits where you glide this way and that, admiringly focusing on your dance partner; the flower/leaf/ plant.
I noted an observation;
Mainly the difference between how their tree ferns and yours spring into life at this time of year, and how my one does it.
Theirs and yours produce a crop of crosiers more-or-less at one time, while mine produced it's 1st at least a week ago, and while that one is now already around 20cm tall, the next has now started and a third is barely showing
I had 20 fronds last year and they popped out one by one between the end of April right through to August/September
Anyhow, this vid was just under an hour and, oddly, not annoyingly interrupted by adds - to be honest, I don't visit CZcams as often because of it. I think the last time I looked at one of your videos, there were at least 3 "breaks" in a far shorter duration
Hi, apologies for my delayed reply and thank you for your kind words! Yes, I like to show a bit of movement and highlight the beautiful scenes and features which really jump out at me - I love your poetic description of those scenes! The light was lovely in the morning and I had to take advantage of it!
Regarding the tree ferns, mine are slowly coming into life now, some with a very clear flush about to open at once whereas others are opening more progressively like you describe. Stressed or younger plants seem to send them up one at a time over the summer but other trunks seem to have one clearer flush. I suspect there's a lot of different factors but if you've got a lovely trunk displaying a full crop of long and green fronds by the end of the season you're not doing anything wrong. You'll have to let me know if yours do anything different this year!
Regarding the ads, they can be frustrating as a user, I understand that. As a creator on here you do get a small amount of control over the advert breaks but ultimately CZcams displays them in a way which they find balances viewer experience and advertising money and I suspect minimising them would have implications on the reach of any videos. Obviously it's not a huge amount of money in a small gardening niche but as a creator you do receive some income derived from the adverts so in a sense they do help support the channels you're watching. I understand the business model but I think recently they've been experimenting with adverts and for what it's worth, I'm pleased you got to enjoy my vid with less interruptions as it's one of my favourite gardens!
@@GeorgesJungleGarden Thank you for the info on the unfurlings. My one tree fern is now doing something it hasn't done before. It started off with just one lone sprog, who is now a good 35cm up, before starting another.. Well, that second one seems to be holding back, waiting for the 3rd and 4th who are now coming into view, so I guess in a couple of years or so, there will be more uniformity to their emergence.
As for the adds - it's not the adverts per say that has put me right off, it's their timing. It's as if this site is weaponising adverts (that they've been paid for), to punish people like me who aren't paying a fee to avoid adds.
It used to be that I'd have to sit through one and could skip the next, and these days it's often sit through two, skip two, or watch them if they're interesting and every now and then the can be entertaining and sometimes have to sit through yet another... fine, a bit irritating but c'est la vie - no biggy. it's more like when watching a music video, they jump in, not between segments (like they used to) but just at the best bits; like jump in half a second after one of your poetic slow-mow camera moments. Like I say, as if deliberate to disrupt. So this days, I'm mostly listening to snippets on insta, where, yeah, they're real short, but no harassment involved.
As long as the others follow and you get a lovely set by summer, I wouldn't worry and you might be right that they become more uniform over the coming years.
As for the adds, I can only really offer a perspective as a viewer and 'creator' but I guess as a platform it's more a case of balancing how much they're able to make by displaying adverts with keeping viewers on the platform a long time. I get where you're coming from though but ultimately it works for YT to have you watching their content for the longest time possible and also their subscription model is always going to be reliant on a lot of people not paying and bringing in the ad dollars so it's certainly a multi-faceted situation. From my end, you do have some control over where the breaks go but A. I don't necessarily have the time to adjust it all after jumping through a lot of hoops and B. they do say that it's algorithmically optimised to choose the right places (which it sounds like could be improved somewhat!). It is frustrating watching a 40 second break just to have another three minutes in but I hope they improve the experience overall with time. I don't do much on Insta, long form is really what I enjoy and I hope YT continues to develop as a platform to provide the best experience for creators and viewers alike.

Thank you very much! Dedication is absolutely the word here and when that's combined with the beautiful planting and stunning combinations, magic happens! Very high maintenance and huge amounts of preparation for sure - completely unthinkable to me these days - but the huge undertaking is absolutely worth it for the end result and seeing it come together. I'm looking forward to going back and putting the next video together already!

It certainly is and you're absolutely right! I suspect the most advanced gardeners are the ones learning the most every day - even in the relatively small tropical / exotic niche, there's lifetimes of experience with different styles of plants and plating to be had isn't there.

Thank you very much Richard, Jenny is so easy to talk with and knowledgeable and each and every plant in her garden. I suspect the July-ish episode will give a taster of the tropical beauty but the end of summer / early autumn one will be where it really shines for me. The growth over the summer months will be incredible with all those bananas and houseplants etc!

Being an image thinker helps a lot with designing gardens, I also found as a photographer. My parents have no clue yet what I've been designing and can't imagine what it'll look like, it's a real struggle for them to combine plants
Definitely, it can be instinctive but it's also honed through experience and can be learnt I believe. As long as you know what works and doesn't work, you don't need to understand the why's and how's too much, just repeat similar colour and planting combinations and try some new experiments every year. The tricky bit for me is remembering to see it with the dimension of time and how everything will evolve but it becomes more ingrained over time.
Lovely garden. The mix of plants is beautiful. I use many of the same plants but a few to add to the shopping list as always! Would love to visit. Look forward to you going back to show us updates.

Palm tree company have some 80cm Trichocereus pasacana in if you still need a big columnar cactus for your arid area. Supposedly as hardy as the Terscheckii
Oooh, thanks for the heads up! Unfortunately most of my free money has gone onto building materials this / next month but I’ve got some smaller cacti that may be finding a home there. Unless The Palm Tree Company want somebody to really test the wet and cold tolerance of their plants in which case I’ll have a hole in the gravel in 5 minutes…

If the tree fern doesn't like it where it is have you thought of moving it ?
It's certainly an option and one I think they'll do but I get where Jenny is coming from with this one and suspect that the shock of being harvested or the conditions it was exposed to afterwards caused damage to the trunk somehow. It gets fed and watered just like its neighbours but, yes, it may just come back a little better in an even more suitable spot.

Good tip and it can certainly help but I think that tree fern has definitely had some kind of issue from day 1 as it gets fed and watered like all those around it.
Does anyone have a good way of forecasting frost, I can find an app or anything and bbc weather never mentions frosts! Help!
Hi, it’s not an exact science and as far as I know, there isn’t a specific app or anything available (but I’ll come back to this comment if I hear of anything!). Personally I’d recommend downloading the BBC Weather App or Metoffice one and when the nighttime temperature is forecast at or below 4C there’s a chance of a frost. A brief dip to 3C shouldn’t be an issue but 6 hours at the same temperature can be a sharp frost but the later we get into the season, the chance of a ground frost gets reduced. It’s something that you need to use a general guide and over time you do learn how it relates to your location eg. rural frost pockets can easily get frost when the nearby forecast is 4C whereas sheltered gardens might not see any at 1C locally. Cloud cover is important to, still clear nights are often when the frost forms whereas cloudy or breezy nights can keep it away. That’s my general thinking quickly summarised, feel free to apply it in as proactively or efficiently as you wish!
@GeorgesJungleGarden excellent info, thank you. Trying to keep my little tree fern safe for it's first winter, think I let it dry out a little keeping it all wrapped up but it's coming back to life now. Lesson learned!
No worries, a bit more water maybe this next time round but we're all constantly learning and adapting aren't we! I have done some longer videos on tree fern care but essentially watering is the primary requirement and I generally use winter protection progressively in stages rather than wrapping the whole trunk up and risk drying out too much.
