There's an aspect of Aang you don't really hear emphasized when people talk about his character. We all know how much grief Aang took on when he discovered the genocide of his people. That's an unfathomable amount of trauma to put on someone, let alone a 12-year-old kid. And we see through multiple other characters in the show how trauma can either change you or transform you entirely. But despite such a deep loss, who Aang is as a person doesn't waver. His perspective and maturity changes, but his peace-keepig values, his caring nature and sense of duty, his fun-loving attitude and sense of humor, and his deep love for those in his life stay firmly rooted in who he is.

Unpopular opinion: Aang is my favorite character. I know, I know, main character is usually the favorite, so unoriginal, but come on. It’s flipping AANG. Aang is so goofy and he matured SO much throughout the series. I love how he handles his challenges and how he lets his culture influence him. His back story is so sad, but he doesn’t let that disrupt his character. Even he doesn’t seek revenge. I love how he stuck to his culture and character and created something that’s unimaginable. His backstory is also very understandable from fearing so much responsibility, which is relatable. All this guilt is built up inside of him, but he doesn’t let that destroy him, rather he focuses on the present and tries to carry out his role. What do you guys think?

Katara normally wouldn't say something like that to Aang or Sokka, but having the prospect of avenging her mother effectively turned her into a different person. It's like when Azula dangled the prospect of finally capturing Aang in Ba Sing Se to Zuko. Zuko is close to putting that behind him, but Azula ropes him back into being a more violent version of himself.
That's what Zuko does to Katara when he gives her the possibility of avenging her mother. However, he also watches out for her throughout the journey as Iroh did for him. Zuko knows that killing Yon Rha wouldn't truly help Katara, but he also knew she needed closure on the matter. Ultimately, he handled the situation very well, and it's really shocking and horrifying to see Katara become so spiteful. Plus her flashback hits harder than almost any other moment in the show besides Zuko's reunion with Iroh. Suddenly it all makes sense why Katara takes betrayal so hard, why she's so distraught about losing people close to her. She literally found the corpse of her mother in the tent that she ran away from not 5 minutes earlier. That scene and The Southern Raiders ties everything together for Katara's character. It's why I believe it's the best stand-alone episode of the entire series.

I just loved that Katara was the one who defeated Azula as I see them as two sides of the same coin. They both lost their mother and were neglected because their fathers only cared about the war (in a way they both sort of see it as their purpose). Both girls felt great pressure to be a certain way. Azula had every privilege and Katara had to fight for everything, however Katara was free, when Azula was a slave. Katara went and fought for what she believed in while Azula was sent by her father to serve his purposes.
Both Azula and Katara were very driven, and got what they wanted by using whatever method they found necessary. However Katara had propuse, while Azula didn't and that's why she lost her mind.
Katara was nagging her friends because she didn't want to force them to do stuff, she cared about their common goal and without her neither Aang, Sokka or Toph would have gotten anywhere.
I love her because she didn't care to be the center of attention, she just went on and did what she had to do. She let her friends shine.
Katara was pretty much as powerful as Azula, when she almost killed Aang it was Katara who saved him both by getting him out be by healing him.
Some may say that Azula turned out like that because she didn't have Uncle Iroh, however Katara didn't really have a father figure and chose to be nurturing and loving.
I love Katara because she was so resilient and brave, it takes more courage to be like Katara than to be like Azula.
Also, Katara was INVENTING water bending techniques, no one taught her, whatever she knew beforehand she had discovered by herself, and she did freeze a couple of soldiers in the beginning.

Finally! Katara is so underrated by fans and deserves much more love! Ppl usually just see her as "annoying mom girl, stopping others from having fun", when actually this bunch of kids would not have gotten anywhere without her.

OMG finally someone who actually liked katara, she is my fave 🤗 and everyone just makes memes like:
      Someone: breathes
Katara: my mother used to breathe
But it's not like that she does not even talk about her a lot and katara went through a lot of change and she learned to have some fun like in the episode "the runaway" and she is really good at waterbending and imagine your mother died and your older brother said you were basically his mother, katara was used to being a mom to sokka and that's why she is the "mom" of team avatar and people call her annoying, but she was living with all this guilt and frustration after her mom died and she was in the tent and at first blaming herself but then she focused all the blame on that one dude and never letting it out and just trying to be kind and pulling everyone together but toph made her snap and sometimes she just get ticked off and let her emotions out but then pulls everything back in and being kind again and in the beginning, she was depending on aang a lot to do mostly everything but later (end of season 2/ season 3) she learned not to depend on him so much, she was already powerful by herself. Sorry for ranting :/

I agree on your take and I also love both of these girls but the "azula was like that because she didn't have iroh" is what get me because i do agree on that. Yeah katara didn't have iroh either but she also didn't have ozai as father figure? These two indeed are parallels, both are child prodigy, lost their mom, are superior compared to their brothers in term of power but katara despite not having father figure still has grangran and sokka (who is a good brother to her). She still have a loving community around her and born with loving nature thanks to her parents genes. But in azula's case, in one side she has this mad king as a father and ursa (as much as i like her) didn't really have any influenece on her and didn't know how to handle azula so she choose to just side with zuko instead. She's very absent mom for azula (not hating on ursa here since she's also abused by ozai) and iroh never really been closed to her since he was once a general and by the time he went back from war, azula was too far gone under ozai's influence but he still has hope for zuko since he knew zuko has a good heart. Azula didn't have anyone except her father who sees her as weapon, turning her into this monster that we knew her in the series. I knew we've seen her being bad ever since she was little, it's part of her nature indeed but i believe she wouldn't turn as BAD as in the series if she was born in a more normal household. Maybe she could turn bad like kuvira when she's grown but this monster that is azula that we know came from both nature and nurture and i think the nurture part has a bigger portion especially when you grew up in this dysfunctional royal family. I used to believe azula was irredemable but the more i look into it the more i believe she could at least be normal. Not this war weapon that his dad has turned her into.

Aang is my favorite character. I have never admired someone so profoundly. Aang lost everything he loved (except for Appa), and he did not even have the time to process his loss. Even though Aang might seem immature, it's just his way of trying to still have a childhood and deal with his grief. Aang loves to have fun with Team Avatar because it was something he never got to experience. Even though he is quite goofy, he is undeniably the bravest character on the show. He never hesitates to help others, and yet he never wants to harm others in the process. Aang is kind, empathetic, caring and honest, despite the trauma he has been through. He always sees the best in people and I aspire to be like him.

Ozai shot lighting at his son, with intent to kill, because his son dared to follow his own path. Iroh could not even fathom shooting lightning at his nephew, even for training purposes.

That´s why I like the what if scenario of Piandao training Zuko in the art of the sword, but also Azula. That could have given her an alternative and planted a seed to grow quietly. Iroh could have done so, too yet I think she´d respect someone like Piandao more easily than the 'weak' uncle.

Siva Pingali That’s definitely how I see it. Sokka’s journey is more about growing up and becoming confident in himself as a leader, whereas zuko’s journey is about rejecting his family and what he’s been taught in favor of a better way. They’re both finding themselves, but we saw Sokka grow into what he always wanted to be. Zuko had to realize that he doesn’t actually want to be what he always thought he did. She's also a female character who doesn't fall in any of the cliché of female characters: she's caring and sweet but she's also temperamental and bossy, she's the maternal figure but she's also passional and intriguing, she's the healer but she's also a bad ass fighter.

I can see why you'd be put off a bit by Katara being naggy sometimes, but I think most of her nagging really comes from the fact that she's a mature and levelheaded person in a group that involves a a young boy who is still learning how to fully grasp the the heaviness of some of his duties as the Avatar, a blind little girl who constantly dishes out rude and sassy remarks about almost anything, and her brother, who can be as rational as she is on some occasions but does have a tendency to goof around and act a bit cockily. If I was in a group that involved people with those tendencies, trying to keep them in line so they don't come to blows is something I would do, so I was honestly never that surprised that Katara would feel the need to watch over them.

Toph, Iroh and Zuko also have my heart, but Aang just has me tearing up whenever I see him. Also his relationship with appa was beautiful.
I also think Katara is quite overlooked as a character. She is seen as a mother/killjoy of the group, but without her team Avatar wouldn't have gotten far. She is the glue of the team (as shown in the desert episode). She may not be my favourite but I feel shes overlooked.

    Warning: *katara Stan and bias*
lmao, I love that ur tier list makes me mad because it means I’m actually passionate about this show 😂 BUT; Katara being ranked behind Mei and Suki really bothers me. Katara lost her mother at a young age and her father left to fight in the war, she was pushed into a mother role from a young age out of obligation and that’s unfortunately the cause of her nagging and nosiness but also the cause of her drive and her ability to take care of others. She went from being able to splash ice water at someone (after missing a few times) in episode 1 and 2 of season 1 to being a master of bending basically by then end of season 2 (less than 2-3 months later) where she’s able to fight off Azula more capably than Zuko and Aang both could at the time. She was a figure to inspire those who were held or restricted to an idea to break that and follow your desires (season 1, women not being allowed to water bend). In Season 3 she really demonstrates her will and love for people in the Painted Lady episode where the rest of her team, particularly Sokka were contempt with leaving these people the way they were (because there was nothing they could do). THE ACTUAL SPIRIT EVEN THANKED HER - A HOLY ENTITY. When she pursued her mothers killer she showed restraint and awareness that most people wouldn’t be able to exhibit in a moment of revenge. She didn’t kill her mothers killer even though she wanted to. She froze her and azula.

I also really love how flippin upset Zuko was over the fact that he felt like he betrayed Iroh. He says it was the biggest mistake of his life. Not failing to catch Aang. Not speaking out of turn when he was with Ozai. Not even when he left Mai by herself. But when he was betraying Iroh

I didn't cry in leaves from vine. I cried at the reunion.
Zuko's body movement shows how pathetic he felt, how much self hatred he had for how he treated his uncle. Iroh was afraid that his nephew will judge him for being white lotus and keeping it secret from him, then understood he was not there for judging, he was there to apologize.
