Oh wow. This is a movie that is ASTONISHING. Never has there been a movie more TERRIBLE than this one. And I can't believe it has taken this long to finally cover it. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2010) was the project that destroyed the legacy of the Avatar franchise, for just how poorly mismanaged the movie was in every aspect. As a superfan of the original animated series I could never express how much this movie missed the mark and betrayed us all. But I'm gonna try.. in a runtime that is almost an hour long. Whoops!

I wasn't even paying full attention but looked up at that
The best thing about that rock scene is that it takes 6 benders doing a whole performance to move a small rock while in the original show just 1 ground pound could raise a entire wall.
6. 6 "earthbenders" doing kindergarten karate and a 7th to give the rock speed. And they seriously thought that would wow the audience.
A guy can even raise his chin. Mind you his chin. And that's enough to make a hill
Actually I saw another analysis that suggests the 6 benders were actually supposed to be the ones who blocked the preceding fireball, which honestly makes things that much worse.
They are not floating a rock, they made a wall. They just kept going with their performance long after the wall has already collapsed.
@@schwarzerritter5724 Still shouldn't take six benders to raise a wall.
M. Night Shyamalan took one of if not the greatest Nickelodeon shows ever, and turned it into the single worst and most insulting film of all time. I still can't get over that the *earthbender* prison was on land, surrounded by dirt and rocks. I know an ocean rig like in the show would've been expensive, and probably looked awful in cgi, but still. It's just so stupid.
Eh, the mummy (2015) is still worse imo. Although the blatant disregard for context and overall quality still makes me upset to this day when it comes to the ATLA adaptation.
He literally once admit in an interview and keep in mind that he said this in front of the creators of the show, he didn't pay attention to what his daughter was obsessed with when she watched the show đđ
Also I knew that this movie was going to be terrible when it was announced that the runtime was 103 minutes. Like how the hell can you cover a 20 episode first season into a 103 minute movie? That's absolutely impossible and a massive red flag already
Y'all should see knock at the cabin. Could barely even stand watching that sh*t
they easily could have made a metal indoor prison if a ship was too much money . toph hasnt discovered metalbending yet all they needed was metal
This is exactly why you just don't do certain things in Live-Action
The movie is actually how I found out about the series..
I'm glad it led me to a better place
Same here
Same
WOW! I thought I was the only one! Seeing the reputation this film got and what people were saying about the show made me think it would be right up my alley and it was! Haven't seen Legend of Korra yet though
Same.
Same. My Dad got it and thought it was a good movie. After I was introduced to the series and then tried telling my Dad that the series was MUCH better, he totally snubbed it because, "It's a cartoon and looks like that anime baby crap."
I have never been more insulted. I really should've watched something like Code Geass or Fullmetal Alchemist with him nearby. Furthermore, He watches cartoons like Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes. Hypocrisy? Lastly, it showed me that my Dad has bad taste in movies. That or a very low threshold for what he defines as "Good"
Imagine being an actor and being told âweâre gonna put you in THE Avatar The Airbender movieâ and you put your all into the choreography, thinking *they are gonna make me look cool as hell* then it looks like this
It's sad cus the kid that played Aang had Aang's personality irl. It was showed in the interviews. Guess that's another sin of the direction team.
wait...WHAT
I always though he would be good if he actually had a director actually directing him
@@BarakonNoah Ringer is actually a perfect casting for Aang, they just did him no favors with that dialogue or the direction.
@@CaptainPikeachu Unfortunately he's too old now to be recast into the role.
@@RafaelBenedictohe also quit acting 3 years after the movie came out due ti backlash about a movie he didn't control??
As much as it pains me to say it: I would sooner watch this movie all over again than sit through Velma
Agreed. Velma is longer.
Just turn off the audio and read a book or something.
I'd rather watch porn over Velma and this movie
Same. This movie was back when bad adaptations can be found amusing vs modern ones that choose to be spiteful
Fair point
Depends if you want to feel nothing or the rage of 1000 suns
The sad thing about the movie is that the visuals are stunning, the outfits the environment, everything looks amazing. But the acting is bland, nothing really makes sense, i feel bad for the people who worked on this! Like imagine spending many hours working hard on models, costumes ect Just for the movie to serve it as a waste of time.
Even Dev Patel seemed to be trying his best but ended up giving a terrible performance too because of the poor dialogue. Good thing that his career wasn't destroyed after this movie, guy is a fantastic actor. Sad that because of this movie, he has no interest in starring in blockbuster movies anymore. Well I respect him for that
@@15Candles true, he was actually showing emotion and trying to portray the character, but fell under the same curse many other actors do, bad script. Seen it myself in other shows/movies, its sad but when that happens itâs usually bad overall. Funny how in quite a few examples a lot of money/effort has been pumped in to the visuals, seems like their trying to compensate for something.
And Flow Like Water is genuinely an astoundingly beautiful piece of OST that I still listen to regularly
Yea all but the pets, the two cutest characters from the original.
@TheGlassesPro Exactly, and they both looked hideous
even as a child watching the movie, I thought it was bad, and we have to count that I was 4 in 2010 â ïžâ ïž
4 O.o
oh god I was 15 O.o
@@AlryFireBlade I was 15 too when the film came out. Thank god I didn't watch it
Man I was 11 when this film came out and I begged my parents to go see it and once we saw the film I instantly apologized and Iâm still apologizing to this day
I was 1
I remember a news segment on the opening night of the movie. Several teens had cosplayed characters, and were super hyped to see it. The news interviewed them afterward and they were so disappointed. The guy who cosplayed as Aang said, i shaved my head for this.... :(
Oh I remember that vid I felt so sorry and apparently one of them was wearing a Kyoshi costume and she took it off cause she wasnât in the film đą
There was also a guy dressed as an Earthbender who actually said _"I should've gone and seen Twilight..."_
That news segment is also on CZcams. I just saw it a few days ago.
There is no Avatar The Last Airbender Movie (2010) in Ba Sing Se.
'Avatar' isn't even part of the title, and thank goodness. That makes it easier to separate this from the franchise.
That earth kingdom pebble dance broke me. Fromt them being imprisoned in earth to the fact that it took like 9 people to slowly move one small rock, that was my breaking point.
Cartoon: *Epic earthbending*
Live action movie: *Brittney Spear's backstage dancers inducing a flying pebble*
That's the moment I stopped watching and never looked back
Iâm still pissed this movie turned Sokka, the funniest character in the series whoâs lines and jokes are still quotable to this day, and turned him into an absolute stick-in-the-mud.
Instead of the meat and sarcasm guy, he's the veggies and straight talk fella
they kinda made him a lowkey version of how he was originally going to be portrayed, before jack de sena inspired them to change him
You know, in hindsight, this movie should have told us about the future of âlife actionâ remakes
Yep
Fr!
Fun fact: originally Shamalan made a first draft that was much better and much more faithful to the source material, but his script was given to a ghost writer who changed it into what we got in this film.
Damn
Sounds like an excuse to save Shyamalans reputation. If I am being honest, otherwise correction would have been made during filming.
Didnt something similar happen with Dragonball Evolution? (Similar movie case as Airbender)
I heard that they also wrote an different script which was more faithful to the manga (not everything was right however) but 20th Century Fox (now Studios) rejected the script and thus Dragonball Evolution sucked
@@officialsamumix I heard the actor playing Piccolo had to fight the director about his character being green.
The ghost writer being Ryan George
To this day I still believe Noah Ringer is perfect casting for Aang, under the hands of a better writer and director who knew how to tell this story, this kid would have shined. I feel very sorry for him.
If I recall, the kid cosplayed him even before the movie was a thing. He was a true fan and god damn I feel bad for him constantly.
Heâs still white tho
â@@TT-ig7tg im asian but so what, he looks good as aang nonetheless
And tbh the cgi in the movie asided from the elemental thingy, are good for its time
Appa for esp looks 100 much better here than the soon coming netflix one
I would rather watch the full play from "the ember island players"
At least that was _funny_ and I could laugh at the fact that the fire nation doesn't actually know how Toph sees
At least, the bald headed lady did a better aang than this kid in the live action
when I was 15 My neighbor's 10 year old son's first exposure to Avatar: the last airbender, was unfortunately this movie. worst part was that they said it was "their most favorite movie of all time" (i swear I died and saw the spirit realm after that). after a good 10 minutes of arguing and a few weeks on CZcams later, they saw the REAL masterpiece that is the Nickelodeon show (plus a little of Kora) and im glad the damage has been undone.
now you get to relive this in 2 days hopefully this ones not a dumpster fire i will check back after thursday.
8:30 That actually is a thing in the show. They can't just create stuff from nothing. (Well except fire, but fire's weird.) In fact in one episode Katara is locked up & has no water to bend, so they have to work up a sweat to be able to have something to bend at all.
That's only for inexperienced benders they do show later in the show that water binders can create water from nothing After they meet the witch in the woods She trains her to use Is water in the air
@@theshadowking9626 Didn't remember that, but that's fair. There still needed to actually be water, in that instance it's just in the air. So the point still stands. Still, thanks.
@@theshadowking9626 Thatâs not from nothing, thatâs moisture in the air. Have you ever seen an earthbender create earth from nothing, or even bend without being rooted to the earth in some way?
@@taromyx4479 I know it's not from air itself, I know that There is moisture in the air all around us I major in science just in the context of the statement that he made
â@@theshadowking9626 well, they pull water from the air, not nothing
Bro did the default danceđđđđ
Still did a better job.
"argues with her boyfriend" I think you meant brother haha
I remember that in the cartoon Sokka and Yue felt a little forced to me, too fast. But Soaker and P-hair is a completely different level, we don't see them grow, we are told and so they are, like if Katara was a creepy aunt shipping her nephew with the first cute girl he sees..!
Something isn't adding up. They had the budget to edit Appa some really nice quality fur, but they did not have the budget to edit better fighting skills when people were doing their bendings or even put the characters in better cosmetics to make them look kinda similar to their animated selves?
they wasted it all ON THE FUR.
@@Barakon đđ
Glad there were no sequels for it. Imagine how Shyamalan would have butchered Toph...
In an interview, he said he was going to make her older, male, and not blind.
We could have had The Rock as The Boulder, but at what cost?
@@aslytherclawontheinternet 90% sure they're making a joke about the original concept for Toph, who was indeed, older, male, and not blind.
Not butchered, slaughtered
The episode "the great divide" was better than this movie.
At least all the characters had their actual name and had actual(albeit wrong) character traits.
Even if the infamous "six men dancing for ten seconds to throw one rock" scene is trying to show something else (the most common one i hear is, the first five were bending the earlier wall, and the sixth is the only one moving the rock)... that would almost be worse. It's not nearly as bad on the bending front (still bad, one earthbender in the show can easily make a wall like that), but there's now a much bigger problem in the presentation. The cause (the five dancing men) and the supposed effect (the wall) are shown separately, without any significant link between them, in reverse order. And if the small rock is supposed to be completely separate, then the film does a bad job of showing it; if the most obvious conclusion is not the intention of the scene, then that's a failure on the film's part, not the audience.
Stop trying to justify a writing failure by saying "you just aren't understanding what you see". Then, it's a writing failure AND a cinematography failure.
Iâm convinced shyamalan despised avatar the last air bender and made this movie out of spite honestly
Wouldn't surprise me
The show is a genuine masterpiece when I found the movie I litterly stopped the movie and through it in the bin!
I recently watched it with my bro and we were laughing out asses off the entire time
I think the absolute worst part is the race bending. M. Night Shyamalan made the villains INDIAN. And then the protagonists are White and ambiguously Asian. incredible.
the âraceâ bending doesnât matter since they are cartoon characters, what matters is if they actually look like the characters, which I believe the movie did right on some of them. The worst part about this movie is the script/effects/acting. Race bending is not what made this movie the worst.
@@DemiCape Idk man, I don't think half of them look anything like their characters.
â@@jesterday3965 The main cast kind of does, like I do believe aang looks pretty close to the cartoon version, but I do agree, the fire nation itself including many characters like zuko and iroh is not even recognizable. Which is why i said some of them was done right, obviously there is a massive miss on most of the side characters and villains. I would say it is one problem but i think the other things that I mentioned is just much bigger of a problem on what made the movie bad.
@@DemiCape Even the creators of Avatar said the characters are supposed to be Asian and Inuit. Race bending in fact does matter because the world of Avatar is created with Asian culture and are canonically Asian. Bryke has said this multiple times.
Race swapping before race swapping became a big deal
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se.
There is no movie within the walls. Here we are safe, here... we are free
The only good thing about this movie is the fact that doesn't have any sequels. That's how much this movie sucks
4:04 did you just call sokka her boyfriend?
The part when Aang defends himself with the airbender training equipment gets even dumber once you realize how easily Korra set those very same things on fire
Um why did you call sokka katara's boyfriend at 4:03
Also he calls avatar an anime.
Yeah I thought that was weird to
I was just about to say that
He knows that they're *SIBLINGS,* right? Otherwise that would be some sweet home Alabama type shit.
I love that the subtitles get it right
Probably an accident đ and avatar is considered a western version of anime so thatâs probably why he said that too
I feel like any time a movie tries to make a live action remake of anything thatâs not a movie already, it just ends up bad. A single novel into a movie? That can work. A book series? Nope. A tv show? Nope. Thereâs just not enough time to properly explore things.
The marvel movies are based of TV shows. Well I guess there main stem is comics though. And they all do well
@@tomongvue6934 Thats cuz marvel knows what they're doing
You can adapt a book series into a film series. Like the Harry Potter films
I mean even single novels are hard to summarize, and the movie end up being 3 hrs.
Peter Jackson did it because he's not braindead
There was a good commentary from Jill Bearup that mentions how they messed up the Earth prison.
Basically, those 6 guys 1 rock ISN'T the same "spell". It just LOOKS like it coz the director insisted on doing 1 long shot, and the CGI guys had to animate over this so there were points where the guy doing the action is off screen but the FX isn't (and vice versa)
finally someone noticed... These 5 Guys don't bend this rock... does it make it better?
Nope it makes it worse, if they aren't bending the little Rock, what are they bend then?
I think they just thought about dancing xD
41:12. That was one thing I actually liked, she recived a part of the moon spirit and her hair became white, she gives it back her hair turns back, I get why it's different for the show since there her body dissapears, it doesn't stay behind
Really interesting to see people pointing out that they say "avatar" wrong. I grew up watching Russian version, and there "ahvatar" spelling is normal
Before the premier of the Last Airbender, I got a major case of food poisoning, and missed the debut, despite my illness, I think it was less painful than watching the film a week later.
The universe chose to save you
Somehow, I always forget just how bad this film is
In Bojack Horseman s1 e4: Todd was writing a rock opera and Bojack was trying to give constructive criticism: instead he kept making hyperbolic statements about how bad it was.
At first he said âthat was, and I donât say this likely: worse than 100 September 11thsâ. Later Todd tried to improve it and Bojack said âImagine if the Holocaust happened ever 4 years than the Olympics, Iâd rather that happened than your rock operaâ
This movie is worse than BOTH of those things.
i actually thought that it was good
until i found out about the series
It's uncanny that this uploaded when I was randomly thinking of this film.
I can't believe how un-cinematic this film looks.
Aang bald in the cartoon: Looks good
Aang bald in the movie: *the child of Caillou and Jojo ciwa*
đđđ
Hahahahaha the dialogues, I didn't remember how ridiculous they were, the theater on Ember Island is a thousand times better
â
To call it terrible is an understatement đą
13 years later and it still burns my eyes
At least the actress who played Yue in this movie went on to be the voice of Asami Sato in Legend of Korra
The one good thing to come out of this movie...
Asami best character by far in that series ngl
0:09 Still 100% better than the bending in the movie.
Did... did you say katara argued with her BOYFRIEND in the show? Is that what I heard?
Dazz is ripping this movie apart with the joy and energy of a little kid on Christmas Morning.
5:21 The 1 visual aspect I DID love out of this dumpster fire was the Air Nomad tattoo design - it was so much more intricate & even contained the air element symbol đšthroughout (though I know it wouldâve been a pain to animate due to said intricacy)
Today was the day I saw Dazz Fortnite dance to earthbend.
My life is complete now.
Remember. When adapting a material it's important to learn how to care-bend. And also what mediums make sense. We can definitely get a good Avatar movie. Just not based on the TV show cause that would obliterate pacing without extreme purpose and care. But a movie about other avatars or side stories? Yeah, that'd work well
funny enough, the actor playing ozai in this is also in the blue people avatar
The bending is frustratingly still better in that video game. 38:40 Seriously. Action --> bending, immediate and impactful. Not _great_ , but at least translating directly from one to the other so it feels like fighting instead of waggling limbs pointlessly first.
It's the only movie I ever walked out of ever.
Well, here we go again.
"The Earth King has invited you to lake Laogai"
C'mon time to wipe our memories of this atrocity.
*I am honored to accept his invitation*
M Night Shyamalan really didn't understand the show one bit.
He saw all the scenes, saw that we love them, but had no idea, why we love them, and what details were imoprtant for anything to be good.
This Happens when a movie adaption is just done for money without any ideas or knowledge.
I remember watching this in the theater with a friend. We were both huge Avatar fans. After the movie we stayed up until about 3 am talking about how...bad it was and how much they got wrong.
I understand they have limited time because they decided to do an hour and 40 minute movie instead of like, a 3 hour movie like it would have needed if it HAD to be a movie. I honestly don't understand what they would have done in the next movies though. One of Aang's central conflicts is that he can't go into the Avatar State at will, and when he DOES go into the Avatar State he's a force of nature with no control and it terrifies him. That's why he goes to see the Guru at the end of Book 2. Here he just...goes into it at the end with no problem.
Zuko meets the group twice (Three for Aang if you count the Blue Spirit) in the movie. The finale hits hard because Zuko was so close to redemption during his conversation with Katara and betrays them. They're basically complete strangers in the movie, making the almost redemption into betrayal feel almost pointless.
They completely skipped Kyoshi Island, meaning they completely skip Suki. And while that's mostly fine for Book 1, if they planned on making the other 2 books Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors become way more important. She becomes Sokka's main love interest for one, but sure they could reasonably move that aspect to later. But more than that, Azula's crew defeat Suki and the other Warriors and that's how they sneak into Ba Sing Se AND Suki being imprisoned is why Sokka falls for Azula's stalling trap later, and is literally Sokka's entire motivation of for going to the Fire Nation Prison. If you're going to skip a whole lot of episodes to save time, why skip one of the more important "set up" episodes that will matter later on?
Lastly, what was their plan for the Day of Black Sun? If we assume the Earth Nation still gets conquored at the end of Book 2, which is why they can't rely on the Earth Nation army who are they going to invade with? Will Haru and his father be joining them? That'd be weird since they basically didn't interact with him in a meaningful way. Will any of the Freedom Fighters be joining? Well they got skipped completely so they're out. How about the inventor and his son who are crucial to making the machines they even use for the invasion? Nope, gone. Book 2 would probably keep Toph's introduction the same so we could potentially rely on The Boulder and some of the other wrestlers but I doubt the Swamp Benders from Book 2 are making the cut so they're probably out. It's like they had no real plan for what to include in Book 1 that will be important later and that's just so weird if they were planning on making 3 Books.
Everytime I see scenes from this film I actually can't help but cry. Avatar was such an impactful series for me growing up in an abusive family where I felt either beaten or alone. I can litterally attribute who I am as a person today because of the series and seeing this film when it released just broke me. It felt like watching a part of me be tortured. They had a perfect fucking template for how to do it like are you kidding me me how do you screw that so badly.
I am so sorry you had to go through that and I'm sorry you had to see this horrible movie.
The subtle default dance at the beginning absolutely destroyed me
Now that I think about it
Aang can't wear silk, as to make silk you have to kill silkworms in boiling water, then extract their webing from it.
I thought it was Avatar the blue alien movie for a second cause of the coincidentally colored thumbnail but hey it comes with the territory
one of my all time favorite characters out of the show is The Boulder because he's just so over the top
Itâs actually insane how itâs not just a little bad but literally every possible thing they could have messed up they did. And itâs not even a little messed up itâs mangled.
I was surprised that M. Night didn't find a way to get the his avatar on a water bed. He would've totally stopped the movie just to explain why they have water beds. Might've been a more riveting movie.
I love how every movie reviewer must cover the ATLA movie at least once on their channel to remind everyone of the worst live action adaptation
4:04 Katara arguing with her boyfriend? didnt know Sokka and Katara were in an incestuous relationship
did you call sokka katara's boyfriend?
The moment I dropped this film, was when they revealed the Earth Benders to have been imprisoned amongst THE LITERAL EARTH THAT THEY CAN BEND AT WILL.
It's the equivilant of imprisoning a water bending on a dingey on the ocean.
man i remember when aang was being walked to the jail cell in the 2nd episode and he just blows himself back down the corridor to escape, thatâs when i knew i would love this show
I'm so sorry for any of you that had to view this utter garbage...

like fr wtf is that movie?
Shyamalan liked Avatar, but he didn't fully appreciate the acting, the dialog, the world building, the character development, the action, the comedy...
It feels like he watched it, was like "wow! Look at these people with powers and ancient spiritual mysticism!" And just ran with that. Which would explain an awful lot about his movies, I suppose X3
your reviews are so good! i'd honestly really want a dante's inferno: an animated epic review.
I watched the show, even though I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but I actively avoided the film when it was being advertised simply because it wasn't animated
No joke, I unironically like the bubble death scene from this movie. I know it changes some context but it's the only thing I actively remember from this movie. I mean, thatd suck to go that way
It's been more than 10 years and people are still not over this film that's saying something
I remember seeing a behind-the-scenes documentary where the director stated he liked the Kyoshi Warriors so much he ended up shoehorning them into a dozen scenes where they werenât supposed to be, realized he was going too far, and then went too far the other direction and cut them from the movie entirely.
I mean, names like Aang or Iroh are pronounced exactly like that in other languages(like german, my native language for example), but if you really want to make the film in english, you have at least look up the correct pronounciation for the things you're trying to say!! This is just so weird!

The only change that actually made sense was to have fire benders only able to manipulate fire and not create it so that they're on the same power level as the other elemental benders.
Because in the show, fire benders are literally the only ones who can create their element from nothing, while air, water, and earth benders can only manipulate what already exists.
