  • some pros and cons of becoming popular on CZcams.
a major issue for me isconsistent calls of requests for telephone help in large numbers that really affects me being able to efficiently run my business.
Good points are that I've been able to show my work and how effective my dpf cleaning skills and procedures are so I do get more customers.
as a mobile car repair mechanic it's difficult to juggle work, emails, calls, etc.

As a tech myself Jimmy, the message you leave on your answer phone could say that it's for "BOOKINGS ONLY" and your no longer giving out advice on the phone anymore.
You will never please everyone no matter how hard you try fella.
You go much further than most people by actually putting a video up in your first place!!
People seem to forget you need a life as well.
Look after no 1 first fella ☝️🤜

Yes, a number redirected to message bank saying bookings only, no advice. Different number for actual clients with instructions to not pass the number on.
Also rearranging his schedule to allow some times for local clients.
I never fully book myself out because there is a high chance I will get some regular call.
Eric from South Main Auto had a real problem with this as he would get people drop-in to chat, and of course he can't do that because he is running a business.
He seems to have ridden this out.
The other option is training someone to run a second van, or maybe a several static locations he can set up at for a day or two and organise appointments by location.
Maybe a school of DPF cleaning? 😁

Hi Jimmy I had a lot of this as a mobile mechanic, I now have my own garage and staff and my productivity has gone through the roof.
In terms of the phone calls you just have to be straight up with people and say you can't be handing out advice free of charge all the information you can offer is available on your channel.
The volume of calls you receive could definitely be turned into a business in its self if you start charging for your advice and procedures of diagnosis, however you will need trained staff to fix your in person bookings.
I wish you all the best pal your videos have taught me a lot and helped my business 👍

Your explanation of the faults and the live data is spot on. I'm an ex JLR master tech, but I've learnt more about DPF faults from watching your videos.
    You explain everything perfectly.
As for people ringing you, you are doing the right thing by blocking them, there is more than enough information in your videos for a competent mechanic to fix any DFP fault.

That in itself is rare, but, you go further, making clear and informative videos - I can personally say that I've learnt a lot from them - for which I thank you. Unfortunately some people can be unthinking, lazy, selfish ....etc... there's nothing wrong with creating a buffer between them and yourself/business - don't feel bad about that. You book a time / date slot,,,, if there’s issues and you email the co. They respond straight away. But they don’t answer or return calls.
They also do a regional day. So they’ll use facebook to advertise that on Mon /xx / Jan we will be at ‘Manchester’ book your slot for Jan.
… that way you can have 3/4 jobs booked in with booking fee / non refundable 24hrs before date. So the work is well structured and you get paid with less hassle.

The problem is that people are to lazy to learn stuff by them self. A have a story from my experience. My mothers car developed a problem and I tried to fix it using internet. No luck. The car went to the dealer and costed a lot of money to fix. After some time the same issue came up. This time I new what was wrong but made a lot of effort to learn how entire common rail system works that next time what ever the problem would be I knew what to look for and what is not right on diag tool real time data. It took a lot of effort and time, reading books, repair manuals, forums but it was worth it. I'm not a pro by any means but it saves me a lot of money doing myself.

The trick is finding the balance. I recently downsized my business and I have put more emphasis on the technology and the machines I have. My business runs on standing orders during busy periods and I've never been so secure. Add staff slowly and build really strong foundations. Once you have a strong bank balance, try and find the money making niches. A garage is a great idea as long as you are not tied to it 7 days and nights a week. Maybe get a cheap garage and stick a few young fellas in there and let it break even for a few years and then you will have an idea if its a goer.

I would say that's the cost of fame, Jimmy. DPFs have become a major nightmare for every diesel owner, so it's natural that people run to the guy that provenly can sort problems that others can't. With what I learned in your videos, I would probably be able to clean the DPF in my car, but I would need to invest 3 or 4 grand on a scanner to clear codes and reset counters (not to mention manufacturer access subscriptions and all other tools and chemicals) - this isn't affordable on a DIY level. Wish there were more trustworthy techs like you, across Europe.

We live in a country (UK) where most people don't value another person's skill level.
I found that the Auto trade is the most underappreciated by the public out of all the trades going.
The fact that this person has took the time (yrs) to learn and also investment (tooling) means nothing to them.
Sadly as you can see by this video, the public's attitude has not and probably will not change in the future, especially as we now live in a society where the majority of people think that a mechanic's job is easy as "you just plug the computer in and it tells you what to change". Plus also demand that they have your attention immediately to rectify the problem that they have.
It's a hard trade to be in when most of the public devalue your time and skill set....
Merry Christmas Jimmy, good luck for the future 👍🏼👍🏼

Well said, you’re one bloke who has other things to do than be a phone answering service.
I’ve watched your videos and they have helped me greatly as a home mechanic who does the odd bit job for mates.
To know that there’s usually an underlying fault causing a blocked dpf has made me search for them, and making use of live data on my scan tool is a revelation.
So thank you for doing what you do mate.

Jimmy I just want to say a HUGE thank you for the time and effort you put into making YT content. I am DIY home mechanic and have learned a huge amount from you about what still seems to be a dark art of understanding and maintaining DPF systems! Wishing you a Happy Christmas and all the best for a successful 2024. Oh .... and I promise never to call you unless I'm booking in my van for you to sort out!

Some of us understand what you going through, you are a 1 man band show.
Those people calling, emailing and so on, they lazy to garage's - they know that they will get over charged and wait for a long time to seen.
Jimmy, just get another mechanic to assist you.
Good luck from Norway - keep up with videos
Knowledge is the best tool you can have.

Heartfelt genuine words. I see your experience, proper diagnostics no corner cutting - the way things used to be done - the ease to reach the fault and simplicity is admirable in this day and age. Feel for the pressure this is causing you. If it were me as you seem to be deciding would take others on to learn and spread the load. You're probably right most of your subscribers watch and learn as I have, I wouldn't dream calling for advice. Be great if you could seize the unique opportunity this gives you, there aren't many like you about.

Hey Jimmy, it was like I was watching myself having a rant in the mirror. Every word you said is spot on. I want to fix every car & help everyone out but I am finding that it is impossible. I closed my garage gates 3 months ago & am still overwhelmed with work. The best I can say is go and enjoy a few well earned days off over Christmas. And well done for all you have achieved over the last few years, Happy Christmas mate 🎄🎄🎄🙏🙏

Hey, love your vids & congrats on your success. May I suggest an idea. If you are in a position to afford it. Hire someone to operate your phones and emails. Their role is to be in between you and customers. Under no circumstances are they to let customers speak to you direct. If the person on the other end of the phone is wanting free advice .... sorry to bad you can make a booking and you come out or... bye. Book jobs and fill up your calendar. Once the person is trained they could do this from home with a laptop and head set. It takes time to train and employees are rarely forever yet I believe this would be best for you. I spent many years teaching people to do this. Your videos taught me something. I would be happy to talk about it if you would like. All the best and merry x mas.

Was going to write pretty much this. Others have suggested online booking system, but that doesn't remove the need for you to manage that, deal with cancellations, lost souls etc.
Have a support person to deal with all of this, and triage stuff so you only need to deal with one person who knows what's priority.
You need to have a phone to deal with suppliers and legitimate business.

Hi jimmy, the problem is obvious, idiots who think they are mechanics, take their car to bits then panic when they realize there not mechanics. I appreciate your videos and have sorted a few problems just by watching your videos. If i think its to technical after watching your youtube video i will take the car to a garage for them to do, (not really rocket science) keep up the good work.

Hi Jimmy..i have the same issues as you, i'm a mobile mechanic, i get alot of people asking for advice etc....i don't get into any techie advice and just advise the diagnostic charge and when i can attend...that tends to filter out the people who want to spend and the ones who don't...all the best mate.

    Your a nice honest guy.
Your videos are bloody great I'm in the motor trade and I'd hate to think what stress your under bud.
I do mercedes sprinters mainly and have done for years.
And have built up a good customer number.
But like you spend many calls trying to help people rather than actually working
It stressed me out for a while but I got 2 numbers in the end 1 that only took messages and the other number I gave out to customers that was my regular people and work I'm doing or booked in.
And it sorted out the problem.
Ebay was my main selling point and I listed my number in the advert.
Silly move but worked around it.
    Good luck.
But never let it run you down you've worked to hard to let idiots ruin it.
    👍👍

Having a garage could possibly increase your overheads.
But grovelling about when it's pissing with rain isn't fun.
Hold fast Jimmy, things will in change in 2024. You're a credit to your trade.
I'm sure you've made a lot of customers happy.
    Good luck mate.👍
Is there anyone who could answer phone calls for you, and pass on serous calls for actual repairs.

  • @nathanmiles1721
    @nathanmiles1721 Před 7 měsíci +1

I feel you. It's hard to maintain a balance of answering the phone to get work and then getting caught for 30 minutes where they try and get info out of you. Then you've lost 30 minutes work and are even more behind. Keep up the good work and don't worry about the spongers. Your right about the UK being depressive too. Keep the videos coming it's nice to see a fellow diag tech doing his thing

Hi Jimmy To put it bluntly your the victim of your own success, Certainly you have inspired me in as much as I have all of the equipment now ready for when I have a problem with my DPF. But it's not just about having the gear to do a job its having the nohow and confidence to tackle it, get it wrong it can cost dearly. If I were to contact my local mechanic for advice every time I went to do a job he would soon tel me to go away. Your a dam good roadside mechanic! not an agony aunt, you will have to be harder on people. Still a favorite ❤The Channel
