I swear pitchfork has some kind of contractual obligation to be contrarian dipshits in 95% of their reviews. In almost every single major or semi-major label release their ranking is a noticeable outlier. I get that sometimes certain critics differ but it’s a pattern that appears over and over and over again. They gave Splendor and Misery a 5.3 for Christ’s sake. I feel like they exist purely to keep any given album’s Metacritic rating from being too high. It’s also clear that there’s an editorial bias against certain artists. Just a dogshit publication outside of their niche indie reviews.

Say the Name, Check the Lock, Pain Everyday, and She Bad are some of my favorite Clipping songs ever. It's incredibly hard to choose since 99% of what they make is near perfect, but the beats and flows and lyrics on these are just perfect. Pain Everyday is by far the darkest, grimmest, most depressing fucking thing I've ever listened to, and it slaps hard. The idea that the dead are just these bitter, angry, envious, murderous lost souls who just waste away in purgatory and hate the living for the simple fact that we live is chilling. And Something Underneath brings out such Lovecraftian vibes, like the elder gods are about to awaken and the entire universe knows it's fucked.

Of course all art is subjective and it should never be bound to any rule, tenet, moral law or preconception, people will always be entitled to their opinion because art can be anything and what makes it so spectacular is it’s ability to draw out a specific and unique emotional response in every observer or audience member. But that is not to that there isn’t certain criteria for more organised, formulaic and regulated forms of art such as Rap/Hip-Hop to which we can judge each individual piece and decide which is objectively better than the other. People, like myself, don’t have a problem with Pitchfork’s opinion or the fact that they have one, because again, that is necessary for art to survive. No, what pisses people off is the fact that Pitchfork’s reviewers and criteria to which they judge artist is wildly inconsistent, strays too far from the source material and is unfocused. Their reviewers are pretentious and focused on saying what would’ve made the album good as opposed to actually critically analysing the real, tangible album itself. They are so preoccupied with what will make their site appear in touch and relevant to people who cannot form their own opinions on music that they list a bunch of obscure negatives with fancy words that you can laud to fans, because everyone knows it's cool to be too cool for popular band. They're confident enough to slam and ham on music that suits their generation, but if they pan something, like a new rap album, that the younger people turn out to love, they're fucked. They're outed. All it takes to destroy their credibility is someone saying, "Well of course you don't like it, you're old." So they're terrified of being rough on music that many of its fans will probably outgrow in a year, because it kinda sucked in the first place, but happy to shit all over anything else. Specifically in clipping.’s case (and the person who reviewed both TEAATB AND VOBBB, giving them a 4.5 and 6.0 respectively, as well as the other reviewer who gave Splendor and Misery a 5.3) you can tell that PF’s opinion and responsibility as a professional critic site to deliver helpful and unbiased reviews is thrown out the window each time. There seems to be literal, unjustified hatred and aversion. I think what it really comes down to is that Pitchfork only likes music that fits their specific definition of coolness and "realness" (especially when it comes to black art), and Clipping's music is the antithesis of that. They make deliberately impersonal, detached, artificial, and "uncool" rap music for music nerds and Pitchfork is allergic to that kind of stuff. All of their negative reviews of Clipping pretty much boil down to how they're nerdy tourists that aren't "real" enough to be making hip-hop which is a ridiculous and unfair judgement. The same person in the same review literally bounced from “they don’t use first person pronouns so that the music is as little about themselves as possible” which he clearly praised, to “Daveed isn’t a very charismatic rapper he doesn’t have much in the way of personality”, they don’t even know themselves what arguments they’re making. Even more baffling, they published a "top 33 industrial albums of all time" list and had one of the clipping. albums at 30. How are you giving them these scores and then putting them on that list? In summary, Pitchfork seems to have serious problem of randomly hating certain artists and being unable to justify it. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it should be followed with evidence and sound arguments, Pitchfork has an obligation to do that being in the critic business, but they just can’t do it, and that’s why they are awful and you should take everything they say with a fuckton of salt. I enjoy these albums, a lot, but that isn’t the reason why I posted this, I just have always had a problem with PF lording themselves around as musical critic geniuses and abusing their influence and brand recognition to distribute their awful musical tastes and arguments to people who have had the misfortune of falling into their “you listen, no thinky, only repeat” trap.
