He had just been shot by Chewbacca's Bowcaster. Have you seen what Chewbacca's Bowcaster can do? It can send 3 Stormtroppers flying. Kylo got shot by that, and he walked it off. Had he not been shot, Rey and Finn would be dead.
I still can't see him coming anywhere near Maul's skills with a lightsaber. Shot or no, his skills didn't look like they were affected during the duel, he was moving normally. And, either way, he literally lost to 2 newbies. Maul held his own against Darth Sidious and Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan, btw, is the guy who beat Anakin Skywalker, and Kylo Ren is nowhere near even approaching Anakin's power and skills.

After being shot by a gun that blows a hole through humans, got his dominant arm incapacitated by a slash from Finn, who he blew the fuck back the moment after, and kept fighting after he was pierced int he shoulder and suffered a gash in his thigh. After which he was slashed in the face, and he's still okay.
I'd never argue that Kylo could beat Maul in his untrained state, I'm just saying he's definitely not a weak villain.

Maul lost because of plot armour. They couldn't have Maul kill Obi-Wan because he appeared in the original trilogy. Same applies to Grievous, who well would have beat Obi-Wan

your making Darth Maul look terrible compared to Kylo Ren. Kylo had years of training and was beaten by a girl that had never held a lightsaber. Maul single-handedly defeated a Jedi master, and was cut in half by Obi-Wan, fell down a really deep shaft, and survived. then he came back in the Clone Wars and captured the entire planet Mandalore. Maul would kick Kylo’s butt.

Maul fought 2 Jedi knights at the same time and managed to kill a Jedi master. his fall was that he underestimated Kenobi. he would destroy Kylo in a heartbeat. now, we still have to see how kylo's power will evolve. but considering his power in e-7, kylo stands no chance against Maul.

Kylo is a a Knight of Ren and we don't know anything about which might mean that they are not as powerful as the Sith... yet.
+Nelson Villegas I think that it is important that Kylo was badly injured when he fought Rey, chewbacca's bowcaster is a very powerful weapon so did a lot of damage to him. Also he was not fully concentrating on the fight due to the sadness he felt after killing his own father. I agree that when both fit Maul would win but it would not be easy.

Gerard Kennedy good point. Kylo injury may have been a factor. But I also consider that Kylo and Maul are from two different eras. Maul would still destroy Kylo, maybe not as easy but still destroy him. Maul had more experience fighting against jedi in their prime while Kylo have neve fought against a true jedi, that we know of.

I agree with the verdict but completely disagree with your analysis of the particulars.
Kylo's style is basic and sloppy. He doesn't appear to have much refinement at all in his technique. I don't believe he has any training in Form 5, neither in it's Djem So or Shien variants. You sight Kylo's blast deflection as an indicator that he may hold some ability with Shien. I counter with the fact that a user of Shien tends to be very adept at not only deflecting blaster bolts but redirecting them accurately against their opponents. Granted we only really saw his Blaster deflection ability used against Rey. While he didn't display any aptitude in redirecting them back at her, you could argue that he wanted to take Rey alive and therefore didn't want her killed by her own blaster fire true enough. But I still see no evidence that he is familiar with Shien. Rather I believe that Kylo's technique speaks more to a practice of Form 1 Shii Cho. Shii Cho was based on common basic sword play. In essence it teaches basic Lightsaber use to younglings so they can wield a Lightsaber without harming themselves. In fact, Younglings were often made to use Shii Cho to deflect Blaster Bolts bling folded in their study of Shii Cho. Obi-wan Kenobi even had Luke do this in his early Lightsaber training on The Millennium Falcon through the use of Shii Cho. I believe this accounts for Kylo's ability to deflect Rey's blaster fire. His movements are far too slow and sloppy and without refinement to suggest that he could have any ability and practical application of any of the more advanced Lightsaber Forms and techniques.
Darth Maul's abilities with a Lightsaber... well... I'm not going to waste time going over them all. He was proficient with multiple styles but as you said... he preferred to use Form 7 Juyo as his primary Form. Darth maul is... well... Darth Maul. Nuff said.
As you mentioned we see Kylo using abilities we have never seen before but never really seems to use them in the heat of a Lightsaber Duel. Maul by contrast was capable of using his abilities in combat but generally preferred to defeat his opponents using pure blade work unless he was pushed hard enough to force him to pull out all the stops. Indeed the only times we saw Maul use Force Powers in combat during Phantom Menace was when he telekinetically threw part of a broken droid into a control panel to open the blast doors behind him and when he telekinetically shoved Obi-wan over the edge of the pit when Obi-wan pressed him in heated combat. I don't see this happening in the case of Kylo Ren.
Your verdict indicated this fight would go in for a while. I disagree. I believe the only way this fight drags on very long at all is if Darth Maul is just enjoying himself and tots with Kylo. If Maul.means buisness in this fight he will bait Kylo into an obvious offensive attack in which Kylo is slow and sloppy and over extends himself. Maul counters with a fast offensive counter that Ren is too slow and off balance to counter and ends it with a quick thrust or slash. Maul would kill Kylo in under 5 seconds if he is half trying. 10 seconds MAX... but I'm thinking less than 5.
This must be the longest comment I have ever read and yh i agree maul would make a fruit shoot out of kylo within seconds. And I dont even think maul would need to bait kylo because kylo has shown little parrying skills so maul would easily be able to hit kylo by using his speed. Because maul has a double saber he can hit twice as fast as a single saber from different angles, if he strikes from the top his other end of the saber is ready to hit from the bottom. plus his incredible speed. And well I dont think kylo can survive when his body will be in multiple pieces.

I have to agree with this. Honestly Kyle seems to use his lightsaber more like a baseball bat than any kind of actual form or style of blade-work. I’d almost be inclined to say he’s just picked up on some experience from actual combat but relies mostly on his natural reflexes and innate (possibly even subconscious) usage of the force in combat to help him predict incoming attacks. Obviously he would have had SOME training from Luke and POSSIBLY a little from Snoke but as you said, even with this being the case, it makes sense that Shii-Cho would form the foundation of what little training he may have received due to it’s utilisation as the “beginner” form so to speak. Judging by the skill (or lack there of) demonstrated by Kylo, it does seem like a bit of a stretch that he would have made it to the more advanced forms unless it was him studying in his own time.

I can see where Stupendous is coming from with conflating Kylo’s power strikes, cleaves and Vader obsession with his having studied Form V (especially of he knew his grandfather was such a great practitioner of the form) but it just doesn’t seem real plausible that Ren is skilled enough to have made it past Shii-Cho - and no master in their right mind would allow a student with as awful saber skills to study the more advanced forms when they have clearly not even sufficiently mastered Form I.

Having said all that, Maul is so far beyond Kylo’s caliber as a duelist that it’s legitimately embarrassing. I agree 100% that if Darth Maul were to get into a legitimate fight with Kylo Ren and was truly trying to kill him, Kylo would be dead inside 5-10 seconds at best.

Actually yes, that may be an even better description since axes at least cut things. I suppose having a weightless blade made of literal plasma kinda of spoils you a little bit insofar as "knowing" your weapons is gonna cut straight through essentially anything you swing it at with hilarious ease (including most other weapons) can often result in the user becoming more reliant on the weapon itself than their skill with wielding it.

Two reasons that ur statement is invalid, one; as a Sith he should have drawn power from the anger and disgust boiling inside of him after being shot hence become g more powerful, 2;injured or not, rey is totally inexperienced and he has had training by Luke who is after all quite powerful. On a side note I totally agree that kylo would've slaughtered rey if she wasn't a stupid Mary sue. Still tho, kylo is bot even near maul in terms of power, his connection to the force wont help him much since maul had a pretty steady "force barrier" and is really powerfully with the force offensivly aswell

Statement: The chance of a Stormtrooper hitting someone related to the plot is 3.68%. Then again, that is with ranged attacks. It could just be that the meatbags have inaccurate weapons and they can actually hit things with a short ranged weapon. Also, the Stormtroopers from the Galactic Empire and those of the First Order have received different training. The First Order have had "special training" according to General Hux while the Imperials are equal to giving a blaster to a Pit Droid from what I've seen. Though I posses little knowledge of Imperial training.

Honestly, if it werent for the need to keep sidious alive (cause you know, plot consistency), i really feel like maul would have won. The biggest reason is Sidious isnt really a duelist, he is a manipulating mastermind. Each Sith has something they are really, really, reaally good at, and for sidious, its maniplation, whereas maul is dueling. Still, it would be close, but maul would win if not for plot armor.

Remember at the beginning of the fight Sidious slammed both Savage and Maul against the wall. That means he could easily break their force sheild and force choke Savage and Maul. He only let Maul live so he can use maul to lure Mother Talzin and kill her.

Also why doesn't any fight in Star Wars transfer into a force battle? It seems a lot easier to just use the force to push aside your opponent. Hell, even if they pull out their lightsaber, the other guy should just try to push past his force wall or cause the environment to be their weapon. Every lightsaber battle in the Star Wars series has been done for the emotional conflict of characters or to look cool and progress the story/characters.
+aleqthepredator The Whole Rey has fighting skill because she used a staff for most of her life is irrelevant when talking about skill with a light saber. Skill with a Staff that you can place your hand anywhere on is very different from a weapon with highly limited gripping space. If a fighter has been using a sword their whole life they will not do nearly as well with a staff. It goes both ways. Also Finn was an elite soldier in theory only as he only ever excelled in a controlled combat setting but when faced with actual combat he showed great failure only being slightly better than the other Storm Troopers(who were slaughtered across the board).
To be exact, first of all, it takes Kylo forever to beat a ex-storm trooper who has neither the talent in the force nor trained much in close quarter combat (Finn was devastated by another storm trooper with "space stun baton_" when he had the sabre half way through the movie); then he was beaten by a first time force user and again, who never trained in melee combat. Maul would have decapitate Finn in a single blow as Finn probably could not react to Maul's force enhanced strike fast enough and defeat Rey within 10 seconds since Rey could probably use some crude force physical ability enhancement in desperation.

Two things rewatch the sidious and maul cllone wars fight and he's having the time of his life laughing and smiling. Secondly there are so many variables to the maul qui gon fight the way that the enviroment favoured maul and the way that qui gon was nearing 60 years old the same way maul would've lost the fight with qui gon on tatooine. Thirdly sidious was a mastermind there's no doubt that even without knowing wether or not Anakin would show up if he would just call for clones and escape. He has recordings of four of the most powerful jedi trying to kill him so he could've just been trying to incriminate the jedi.

Kylo has a very fast and aggressive Lightsaber style, i believe to be self taught. If you watch kylo vs luke you'll see what i mean. But he pales in comparison to maul. Maul has better strength, speed, and lightsaber capability (He killed a renowned jedi master, in legends he soloed a vong warrior and a modified wampa with no lightsaber or the force, and temporary fought sidious on his own) so although kylo should not be slept on, maul claps with no difficulty.

Don't forget that after Kylo killed Han he was disconnected from the force because of not relishing the moment but instead miserable which is what a darksider shouldn't feel.
He also was shot by Chewie by a crossbow abel to throw full grown men 7 feet back in the air but only went down on one knee and continued to punch that area practically making himself bleed out hoping all the while it would amp his dark side power but due to being disconnected.
I absolutely agree and people hang on to that fact, as if to say that kylo was badass because he survived chewies bow'. not to mention that the quality of duelists have been degrading since darths bane thought bomb not only this also the near elimination of the Jedi would have definitely lost duel knowledge and skill. also maul was able to construct his lightsaber within a furnace by using the force to keep himself alive.

But you also have to realize, Maul beat a Jedi Master and his padawan, an exceptional saber user while also injured. He had been shot in the leg less than a day before and had just come back from spending days with no food or water before he went in and beat them both. Ben is honestly nasty after watching TROS. Like before this movie i’d say “Maul mops the floor with him” but watching Ben’s true force strength in terms of force and pure lightsaber dueling capabilities beating Rey post training only losing to her bc of him being distracted by Leia.
We needed more from him and i’m still salty he died considering his potential seems far higher than Rey to me.
You also need to see the force habilities that Maul showned in the Season 7.
Maul also happens to be capable of Death Look which can kill.
But in a lightsaber duel, against Ren it'd end exactly the way you said it wouldn't : a quick kill for Darth Maul. He is a LOT faster, a lot fitter, a lot more precise, a lot more skilled and a lot more agile as far as duel is concerned. Also that lightsaber staff would be something Kylo wouldn't know how to deal with since Maul would be the first user of that weapon he'd encounter. Even If he threw the huge swing, Maul would dodge and immediately counter.

The onw who fought Kenobi , Skywalker and Ahsoka in different locations yet he survive and remain as strong , the one trained directly by Darth Sidious aka Palpatine for around 15 years since a child , the one who survived the clone wars , the Naboo crisis and the empire hunt to be exiled and train in Malachor. The one who trained Savage Opress and almost killed both Dooku and Ventress , the one who formed the Shadow Collective the biggest union of gangs and secret societies in the galaxy using only manipulation and dark side intimidation , the one who conquered Mandalore with the ammo and aid he had at the time which still allowed him to. And lastly the most epic looking Star Wars character I simply cannot even think about this versus , its an instant win for my man Maul.

Isegrim1871 What would Maul do without a lightsaber? His force abilities are almost pitifull as stated in various outlets. Maul is as powerfull as he is because he is one of the strongest duelist in the Star Wars Canon. So how is he without a weapon supposed to beat someone who can now just use the force to kill him because he cant put pressure on Ren to not use the force? With a weapon Maul wipes the floor with Kylo ten times out of ten undoubtedly, but without one its impossible even though he's a great martial artis. One of the reasons you dont see jedi or sith using the force alot in their battles is because the threat of their opponents lightsaber or weapon striking them while they attempt to do so disuades them from doing such. With no weapon, regardless of Maul's hand to hand prowess, Kylo would have no reason as to why not use the force and proceed to destroy him. Maul has no impresive feats using the force that would put him above average in that category and Ren has displayed great power in the force in his brief appearence, not to mention he's of the Skywalker lineage. I agree Maul wrecks him but saying that he would win without a weapon is an exageration.
Mauls feats are way more impressive. He was able to crash a fkin space ship using it and overwhelm Obi Wans defense. Kylos best feat is pushing away Rey who at that time couldnt even use the force in a fight to defend herself. In Lightsaber combat Kylo gets outclassed anyway. Durability wise Maul is also way more impressive. He took a beating by Palpatine himself using force lightning and was cut in freaking half. Yet he is still alive. Kylo took a shot from a blaster.

spaceship one, it is mildly impressive, the only feat Maul has and he never ever shows anything similar to this again. Given that Maul was influenced more than usual by his anger because of Obi Wan and stress in that scene and that he never displays this level of power again, it is categorized as an isolated event. Kylo stopped a blaster shot in mid air using the force (something never seen before), extracted specific information from peoples minds utilizing the force (something not 3 jedi masters could do together), and force pushed Rey a distance that we have rarely seen other force users achieve even against non force users (the only scene that comes to mind is Sidious vs Maul and Savage). It is clear Maul stomps Kylo but it is also evident that in a force battle Kylo would win. This is especially evident given how aside from being one of the best duelists Maul is also known for his lack of force abilities.

Maul is only known for his lack of Force abilities due to word of mouth - when people carry a certain narrative and that narrative spreads, it becomes commonplace to see leading many to believe it's true, whether or not its origin is based on fact or opinion. In terms of frequency, Maul uses the Force quite often, mixing pushes and ragdolls into his lightsaber sequences. In terms of precision, we've seen Maul effortlessly lift debris and throw it into a door button. In terms of magnitude, we've seen him collapse a cave, pull a ship from a cliff while running and carrying his brother, and crumple an entire squad of soldiers. We've also seen him fight straight through Force lightning - something no one else has done in the universe (as far as I've seen). Maul is one of the better Force users, contrary to popular opinion. Kylo has more unique ways of using the Force, but I wouldn't say he's stronger than Maul.
Can you do an updated version on this fight, as Kylo is seen on the defensive in ep 8, and in ep 9 we see a more refined version of fighting, as ep 7 seemed ludicrously improbable on how the force worked...also it would be more complete as we see Kylo's abilities in full, also thanks for making this vid, i appreciate it even after 4 years!

He didn't "nearly lose" to Finn, he completely destroyed him. Ren started out the duel by holding back and merely toying with Finn, his cockiness allowing Finn to get in a lucky shot. After that hit, Ren stopped holding back and immediately beat him within an inch of his life. The only reason Finn didn't die immediately was because Kylo wanted to savor the traitor's death.
Mikeathy Notice how Ren shifted tactics and stopped fucking around after Finn got in a lucky knick on his shoulder. Immediately after that, Ren disarmed Finn in a single blow and proceeded to torture him. If he wanted Finn dead asap, he would've done that from the start; unless, of course, he was just toying around with the traitor.
And yeah, he's no Sidious, but that comparison is more than a little unfair. That's like comparing a world renowned brain surgeon to a medical student from an average at best medical school. If Kylo was fully trained and received said training during the height of the Jedi, I imagine he'd be far, far more capable than he appears in TFA. But, considering neither of those are true, I think he's more than an adequate force user for what he is.

Mikeathy Jango Fett killed 6 Jedi barehanded they were Padawans though but I see Kylo's skill with a lightsaber only a little bit stronger than that of a Padawan due to his lack of training, but by Episode 9 after his training with Snoke I see him becoming a lot better with a lightsaber in a short amount of time same for Rey getting training from Luke.

After watching how easily he handled all six of the knights of ren , kylo is very underrated. Since he’s much stronger than maul with the force I got kylo. I think maul’s speed would have him frustrated at the beginning of the fight and that would feed his always ready temper giving him the advantage. Also he obviously held back when he fought Rey the first time because things went a little different in rise of skywalker
